Subject: Queen for a Day needs your help with tiaras!

Author:
Jenna Edwards, Miss Florida 2004 (MAO)
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 00:01:55 10/23/04 Sat

I am writing to solicit tiara donations for Queen for a Day and the pageant community has always been supportive. The good news is we are growing rapidly with new chapters all over the country and our current chapters are increasing activity with more parties. The bad news is we are not bringing in enough tiaras to support the demand. I am making a plea to anyone with extra crowns to please donate them to Queen for a Day. Even MAO titleholders can send their extra local prelim crowns to us. For instance, I only have 2 prelim crowns. I'm keeping one for a keepsake and I'm donating the other to QFAD. We are in desperate need of tiaras so any help, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is greatly appreciated.

Queen for a Day is a 501C3 non-profit organization for seriously and terminally ill pediatric patients. So many times, illness hurts a patient psychologically more than physically. Children forget to be kids and resort to the isolation the disease offers as the alternative. When QFAD comes to the hospital, we give the patients a reason to be a kid again. We host tea parties for girls to be pampered with makeovers, manicures, and their very own coronation ceremony. Each patient receives a real tiara donated by queens across the nation! When a child looks in the mirror after her makeover and smiles, she has pushed down her illness. When they giggle and prance around the room wearing tiaras on bald heads, they beat down their illness. The Queen for a Day crown symbolizes victory as they are champions over their illness.

At our events, bald cancer patients come in with pale skin and apprehensive expressions. By the time they leave, they have smiling bright red lips, blushing cheeks, energy in their step and a crown donning their hairless head. They walk in clutching their IV pole. They walk away with their shoulders thrown back and their head held high, leaving the nurses to handle the IV pole.

For the boys, we encourage the qualities of bravery and courage through the Heroes program based on firefighters and police officers. We invite local heroes to attend the event to tell heroic stories and develop a friendship with the patients. Patients receive firefighter hats, badges, and other hero-themed gifts.

For four years, QFAD has operated and developed into 33 chapters in the U.S. and 8 in South Africa. We have been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show twice and in People Magazine. Oprah’s Angel Network donated $10,000 in supplies in April 2001. Companies such as Ford Motor Company, the Miss America Organization, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Tony and Tina cosmetics, and Clinique cosmetics have supported QFAD as well.

Visit our website at www.qfad.org for information. Thank you so much!

TOP 15:
Arizona
District of Columbia
Georgia (I hated her gown presentation, and I don't feel for her gown anyway, but she absolutely blew me away in swimsuit!)
Indiana (Beautiful gown! And just by looking at this girl you can tell she has great stage presence, and you can see her gorgeous body throught the gown! Definite contender!)
Kentucky (To DIE for swimsuit photos, but she is a little stiff on stage.)
Louisiana
Massachusetts (Beautiful, and one of the best gown presentations of the year. But the body isn't that great, and she is a little too short.)
Michigan
Missouri
Nevada
North Carolina
Oklahoma (This girl has the most beautiful face (and eyes for that matter) of the whole entire pageant, but the poor thing couldn't answer a question if her life was on the line!)
Tennessee
Texas
Virginia

TOP 10:

Arizona
District of Columbia
Louisiana (She's got some weight too lose (Owww, I'm gonna get bashed for that one!) but I had to keep her in this long because she is just too gorgeous!)
Michigan (She wore a gorgeous, form-fitting gown at state and she wore it well, but swimsuit is not her strong point.)
Missouri
Nevada
North Carolina
Tennessee (I never thought that It'd come down to me elimianting Tennessee, but My Top 5 are incredibly consistent!)
Texas (Not very stylish (Like NOB) and there has to be some flaw in her if she wasn't even a semi-finalist in Miss Texas last year.)
Virginia (Cute, bubbly, gorgeous. But I refuse to think of the legendary Kristi Glakas without the curly hair. She does have an awesome body though, and I can't wait for her semi-finalist reaction!)

TOP 5:

Arizona (To die for model looks, GREAT body, GREAT interview, and GREAT gown, but I'm not feeling her auburn hair!
District of Columbia
Missouri
Nevada
North Carolina

TOP 4:

District of Columbia (Still looking for a flaw, but my Top 3 are just TOO perfect, while Tiara is only perfect.)
Missouri
Nevada
North Carolina

TOP 3:

Missouri
Nevada (Best African American delegate in my opinion! She has got a rocking body, and if Shauntay can do it Victoria can do it!)
North Carolina

TOP 2:

Missouri
North Carolina (Once again, PERFECTION, but Missouri is a goddess!)

WINNER:

Missouri, Won swimsuit at Miss Missouri MAO and Miss Missouri USA, won Evening Gown at Miss Missouri MAO and at MISS AMERICA! And she won Interview at Miss Missouri USA! Even though she has some tough competition, I predict she's going to sweep the competition! Like Danielle Demski-no one-even-has-a-chance kind of sweeping the competition! My absolute winner! I love you girl! Go get 'um Shandi!

Now, what do you all think?

What you always wanted to know about Miss Universe

HindustanTimes.com
NEW DELHI, May 31

How many women compete?
Delegates from 75 to 85 countries take part in the pageant every year.

Any age requirements delegates must meet?
As of 1993, Miss Universe delegates must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by February 1st in the year they compete in the national competition.

Can delegates be married?
No. Delegates may not be married or pregnant. They must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled nor given birth to a child. The titleholders are also required to remain single throughout their reign.

How are the semi-finalists chosen?
All delegates are judged in three areas of preliminary competition:

Interviews: Judges spend time with each delegate to learn about her successes, goals and ambitions.
Swimsuit Competition: Each delegate wears one of a variety of swimsuit styles provided by a sponsor.
Evening Gown Competition: Each delegate wears a gown she has chosen for herself.

All scores are entered into a computer and are then tallied in each of the three categories. The delegates with the highest aggregate scores are named the semi-finalists. The competition is narrowed twice more to produce the winner.

How are the Titleholders and runners-up chosen?
Once the finalists are named, their scores are discarded, and they begin competing anew. In the final competition, the same three areas are judged. The judges' scores in these categories are tallied and the winners are named live on the air.

What prizes and gifts do the winners and the contestants receive for participating in the event?
Miss Universe 2002 received the following:

Miss Universe is provided with a deluxe apartment in New York City and travel the world meeting dignitaries, speaking on behalf of the company, meeting with charitable organizations and appearing at events held by official sponsors.

I have a NEW Winnwear size 6 swimsuit for sale that has never been worn.

I also have a Lady M size small swimsuit for sale that has only been worn once.

Both of these are excellent for Miss Michigan. They are top of the line. They could also be used for preliminaries to Miss Michigan or to Michigan USA.

I have a beautiful BANU size 2 interview suit for sale.

I have a red Claire's Collection gown that is top of the line and in perfect condition.

I also have a Jovani size 6 evening gown for sale that has never been worn. It was purchased at Petals N Lace for a national pageant, but I was unable to compete.

If you are interested in any of these items, please contact me at gabbardsgirl@yahoo.com. Thanks!

For Stacy Lee! Congrats! You are a very beautiful person and so gracious. You were so nice to me at the pageant and your warmth is felt instantly. I cried when you won, and felt the joy with you. You will make a beautiful and wonderful rep for our state. You truly deserve this honor. I had a wonderful time at the pageant, met some wonderful girls and looking forward to it again. Stacy you and Elisa both are beautiful ladies. I am glad to be from Michigan proud that I took part and can't wait to support you at the 2004 Miss USA pageant. I think you will take everyone's breath away.

First off, I want to say Congrats to the new Miss Michigan USA and Miss Michigan Teen USA 2004. Both Stacey and Yelena are strong, and deserving young ladies. By the time nationals roll around, both will be well preapred, and become favorites.

As for the Michigan pageants itself. The production and all was great. And kudos to the staff and director for making the pageant a pleasant experience for all involved.
Sure, there was that little error with the names being read wrong at the end. That was the fault of the emcee, and the excitement at the end. It was fixed right away from the other emcee. Mistakes occur...that is just life.

The semi-finalist were all amazing young ladies. I know so many people on here have complained about the semifinalist, however, how can some complain? You were not in the interview rooms to know what occured between delegates and judges. Besides that, it was just tough overall. Also, any of the favorites could have had a bad day, and it reflected in interview. They always say that a pageant is won in the private interview. So be the case here.
The top 15 in both were great. You had veterans, newcomers, local winners. It was a good mix. Isn't that what a pageant should have...a good diverse mix?

As for the director...people have been putting Melissa down. No, I am not her, or a family member to her. Thank goodness she has that class and dignity to not visit this board and read what some of you so called "supporters" and "fans" have claimed of her and her pageant. It is an embarrassement to the pageant, and the state of Michigan what you people have been saying, and bellyaching about.
Melissa has turned Michigan around, and we have done great because she is on board. The state of Michigan is lucky to have someone like her directing the state, and making it one of the powerhouse pageant states in the country.

So for those that have been trying to take Melissa down, or her pageant, or find loopholes. It will not work. Everything has been fair, and on the up and up. She puts on exceptional productions. Has great staff. And does a good job overall. That is the type of director all states should have.

And for those that say they are "supporters" and "Michigan Fans" and all. Instead of complaining because you or your daughter or your local delegate did not win. Support pageantry, and Michigan. Quit making the state look bad, because in the end, it reflects poorly on pageantry as a whole. Nothing can be changed in regards to the winners. They won fair and square. Support them now!

Act like adults, set a good example and support your winners and your state. Go Michigan!

PS- Does anyone know how old Stacey Lee is?

Morton gets crash course in pageantry
By Rick Charmoli, Staff Writer

TUSTIN - Leslie Morton got a crash course in beauty pageants during a three-day event in Port Huron.

Leslie Morton, 19, of Tustin, competed for the title of Miss Michigan USA and found out things are different on the other side of the stage. She had only been in one other pageant before entering into the Miss Michigan USA pageant so there were a few "behind-the-scene" things of which the pageant rookie was unaware.

She noted how little time, about 90 seconds, the contestants had to get ready between each outfit change.

Before the contest, Morton said she was nervous about being in front of 3,000 people that fear soon faded.

With all the things to remember, such as a choreographed dance routine, there was no need to worry about being in front of a theater full of people.

"It was an amazing feeling. It was such a natural high," Morton said. "You couldn't help but smile. You turned around to look at the crowd and you heart just pounded."

She said without the help of friends, family and sponsors, none of what she experienced would have been possible. The entry fee was $690 and that did not include her new evening gown, swimsuit, opening number dress, shoes and other accessories. In total, Morton said the cost to participate was more than $1,000.

The camaraderie between the contestants was surprising considering what was at stake, Morton added. Miss Rochester Hills, Stacey Lee, was crowned Miss Michigan USA.

"Every single girl there deserved to be there and every girl worked just as hard to get there," Morton said. "There was nothing I saw where they were angry or cutthroat. Everyone seemed like they were just glad to be there. I know I was."

She said her experience went really well even though she did make the cut from 68 to 15. In fact, the experience has definitely made one thing clear to Morton.

"There is no doubt in my mind that I will be competing next year," Morton said.

Hello to all the Michigan pageant people (I certainly wouldn't say fans). I just spent the weekend in Michigan, I am from another state, currently I hold a national title, and I have competed in my usa teen state pageant and will compete for our miss state usa pageant next year. I was completely floored by your state's pageants. Trust me, ours is 2 days, in a hotel ballroom with a pop up stage and a banner hanging in the back, and we pay a $895 fee.(same as yours I think) Everything from your theater to the show to the lights to the lay out of the show. And the cameras. All the girls looked great. I knew I was coming so marked my favorites from the website. I was pretty impressed that I got 9 of the teen correct and 14 of the miss. We have a fan page board to and everyone is always mean on ours also. I just wanted to mention that I thought your state pageant was great. It is sad to see any mean stuff about any of the girls or the people that work hard.

I have a 16 year old daughter Megan. She was in the Miss Michigan Teen USA pageant both this year and last year. Her start was with Great Lakes Pre-Lim 2002. Megan enjoyed herself and met some great girls that she has continued to remain friends with.Lori Reese referred Megan to Shannon Grace Clark for futher training if she was to continue in pageantry. We did. Megan trained with Shannon for approx. 3 months. I was impressed with Megan's achievments and have Shannon to thank for her consulting services. I was led to this board by several people within the pageant arena last year. It became very upsetting for me to continuously see that certain girls were being presumed to win on many posts day in and day out. Yes, I too became a bit obsessed with checking on the board to see if my daughter ever made the lists. It was very hurtful to my daughter to constantly see the same names on every new prediction. I believe that I was not alone with that obsession. Many parents, family and friends posted their favorites. I allowed this board to affect the way in which I viewed the pageant business. I became bitter with the constant ill-mannered people that posted hurtful things to and about several girls.I found it much too easy to login to the board and write my own feelings about what was being said.It seemed to get out of hand pretty quickly. I said some things about Alicia Jaros and Shannon Grace Clark. They were not very nice. I was out of line for the comments and I apologize full heartedly to both Shannon Clark and the entire Jaros family.I thought about apologizing before the pageant but knew that would only look like a ploy to regain some respect back to Megan because she was competing this year. As all of you know, Megan did not place. She has decided that she will bow out of pageantry. It is not ever going to change. My out of line behavior has damaged ANY chances Megan would ever have of placing. I also must apologize to her. Megan, Iam sorry. I made comments that affected the way YOU were judged. My comments jeopardized your hard work and determination. For the record, Megan Gully is one of the nicest most sincere young ladies you could ever get to know. She did not deserve to be treated poorly because of a bad decision I may have made. Attending the pageant this last weekend in Port Huron made me aware of many things. I saw some great people I have met in the past but there were many who did not want to come near me in fear of someone seeing them talk to me. They did not want their daughter to be the next victim. Again, Iam sorry for making anyone feel uncomfortable. Melissa, you too, made Megan feel as though SHE did something wrong.I feel you did not give her a fair chance to prove herself. You cut her off short and refused to allow her to make any advancements. I must apologize to you also.I know that my comments affected you too. Iam sorry.
I came to this board this evening for the first time in almost a year to say what needed to be said. Please do not post any replies to my post, I will not return. If you need to say something to me you can contact Shannon Grace Clark. Megan trained with her for the last month and Iam giving her my permission to give you my number.

Sincerely,
Renee' M. Gulli

I just wanted to say I had a great time this past weekend. I learned alot!

Contestants that stood out to me as role models and wonderful women of Michigan.......

Tonya Tibbs- you are a sweetheart! and congraduations on Miss Photo. and T 15! It was nice to see someone win Miss Photo. and not have to spend mucho dollars on Sam Tang! (great photographer though!). Crystal Hayes is also such a sweetheart and so hilarious! - I wish her the best of luck in her upcomming pageant "Miss" years! Congraduations to her and Nichol for making Top 5 in Miss. What an accomplishment! Lashana Gardner is a GREAT person with so much energy- congrats on T 15 girl! Teresa Swamba- i wish eveyone could have a chance to meet and talk with this girl! an EXCELLENT role model for all Michigan women! and such a giving woman! Congrats on T15 ! Courtney Dolecki- such a cutie with a kind heart!

Elisa Schleef is a wonderful and approachable woman. I had serveral opportunities to talk with her and I am so proud that she was able to represent our state. 3rd runner up at Miss USA is such an accompishment - CONGRADUATLTIONS! I loved cheering for you from my living room!

The only let down I faced was that notion that in order to do well in this pageant - there was TONS of money to be spent. I felt like you almost HAD to get coached by Shannon Grace Clarck ( I hear she is great though!), had to have Sam's pics, and had to have that thousand $$$ gown. Which is a big letdown to me because I am NOT a "rich kid" but I LOVE pageantry! If what I hear is true about Nichol- that she has never been trained- GOOD for her! That gave me some hope!I don't want to negative - I just wanted to state some concerns I had.

I met some extraordinary women this past weekend, that the pageant can be proud to be affilated with!

Good Luck to Stacy Lee at Miss USA! GO GIRL!
