3-3-01,
After three days in Mumbai I'm getting a little antsy. We are staying just outside of the city in a suburb called Ghodkaupr. When we arrived I loved it. The cattle in the streets, the people selling fruit and vegetables all up and down the streets, and the cute little taxi things they call rickshaws were all so charming... It's been a couple of days and I want to pave over the streets (my feet are dirty), send the cattle to be slaughtered, and find the nearest gym - All the food is fried and it's a carbs on top of that and i'm going to be a fat cow... which is why drinking the water doesn't sound like such a bad idea.

Rebecca and I have a bag full of Kiehl's shampoo, MAC make up, L'occitane mint soap.... and what we need is toilet paper. We've vistited a lot of her family and priorities are very different here. It is very rare for children to have thier own room. They usually sleep on little mattresses that are laid out at night in their parents room. They have one room - and three house servants. No toilet paper - but a computer. Gold thread is used when making the clothes - but they wash them in the river and beat them clean with stones... But hey - to each their own. I'm on vacation - and I have no job. (Carrotts' aside: this was true and I was a bit jealous.)

The typical day for us has been wake up, have breakfast, shower, have lunch, and then we meet a series of people. With every person you have to eat. They insist. When you say you have had enough, they put more on your plate. Then after you finish that they tell you that you probably shouldn't make it a habit to eat so much because you will be very fat - this has happened three different times. I was thinking *^$(*&$#!! but I just smiled.

Tomorrow we are leaving for Pune and our days will become 300% more productive. Pune is the home of a specific school of yoga, various cults - which I will join if they have a large supply of toilet paper and Evian - a big university, and the Ghandi museum. we will be there for only two days and then we are off to Bvaunagar to see the Jain temples. I know nothing about this religion except that apparently they make beautiful temples. We read that it takes on average an hour and a half to get up the stairs and into the temple. When I finally get there I'll probably be able to pray for nothing more than someone to come and carry my stupid a$$ back down all of those stairs. Then it is off to Ahmedabad for a traditional Indian wedding. Traditional does not mean open bar like in America, my family will be happy to know that the state of Gujrat where we are is dry and one must go to a very fancy hotel if they want wine with dinner. Anyway, traditional means a three day long ceremony with all of these dances and festivals... I'll let you all know. This is an area that was hit pretty badly by the earthquake (Carrotts' aside: remember people this was a while ago)... I don't really know what to expect. Apparently entire towns were demolished and people are just rebuilding elsewhere.

All and all it's been a good experience, eye opening. It will get a lot better when we leave the confinement of staying with family. We aren't really allowed to do anything for ourselves - and while this sounds fabulous - I've always wanted a personal secretary... independence and privacy are greatly missed. Oh one last thing sorry to the rest but - Scott please email me my LSAT score so that I can know if I'll really be a Vietnames art smuggler or not. All my love. Oh and another thing to my family, I know I talk about your bad children (Carrotts' aside: certainly not my child, harrumph! ..and she didn't go to law school) but Rebecca has a little cousin whose name is Raj - it means prince. He is the only boy and has many servants. I would like to beat the child lifeless, at the very least. I'll be in touch.
