When I did the calculations on myself a couple of months ago I found that I was only eating about 1200 to 1600 calories a day when I was on low carb. (I never figured it out for days I was off the diet). I have bad habits like forgetting to eat breakfast, or skipping meals and not eating for hours and hours.

The experts say you should eat every 3 hours or so. Not huge meals, but something. This keeps your metabolism reved up. Well obviously I wasn't doing that.

When I forced myself to increase my calories to about 2400 or so per day (for a few days only) I started losing weight again. It was sort of weird. I was a little surprised, because it goes against a lot of the things we've been told forever "cut calories and you will lose weight". Well for those of us who have been really heavy, we believe that so much that we sometimes cut them so drastically that our bodies refuse to let go of any of that excess fat we've accumulated.

My biggest problem is that I have a really hard time staying low carb and still eating the right amount of calories. The other option to trying to rev up a sluggish metabolism is to start increasing your excercise levels. Begin to lift weights, or to do your aerobic type excercises.

I've been told that you should do aerobics on an empty stomach and then not eat for an hour or so afterwards in order to burn the most fat. (Well easily said!)

The idea is two fold. First thing in the morning your body has been burning calories all night so the glycogen stores aren't there to burn in the morning. Doing aerobics on an empty stomach causes the fat to burn first, and not eating for an hour continues that burn. The second part is something found in Protein Power about human growth hormone and the part it has to play in weight loss.

Lifting weights is very beneficial, because it builds muscle which is active tissue. Requires a lot of calories just to maintain muscle mass. Too many people who have been dieting for too long have lost a lot of muscle mass. If you aren't consuming enough protein, muscle mass decreases along with the fat stores (and maybe faster than the fat).

It is important to rebuild any muscle that you have lost because it actually helps you to lose weight.

I read somewhere that overweight teenagers actually eat LESS than their trimmer contemporaries. But they are less active, (therefore less muscle). I think I believe this. Those of us who have gotten over fat probably know that we really don't eat that much, (sometimes the wrong foods).

Some of us have managed to reduce our caloric intake to barely enough to survive. And we still keep on gaining weight. Hmmm how does that happen? Because we've slowed our metabolisms down.

So eat. Eat enough. I realize that 3500 is a lot of calories, maybe you don't need that many (if you are active you might), but don't let it fall more than a 1000 calories below that level or you will be causing your metabolism to slow down too much.

I'm looking into a program called "Body for Life". I am planning to buy the book and read it as soon as I get a paycheck (tomorrow). I don't know if I'm up to it, it sounds pretty intense, but at this point I need something more structured than what I have been doing. I keep falling on my face as far as losing weight is concerned.

When I increased my calories I was able to lose for a day or two (but was afraid to continue it). When I started lifting , I was able to help myself to reach a lower set point, and maintain at a lower weight. But I'm having trouble sticking to the diet, working out, and keeping myself motivated right now. I think part of my problem is that I have made too many rules and I can't stick to them all. Plus hormones definitely affect my ability to hang in there. Certain parts of the month I am just weaker than normal.

Anyway if I learn anything good from this new book I will keep you informed.
