Just stopped in to say what a great day I had! Took the kids to the bowling ally for lunch and bowling and I didn't eat the JUNK! Had a burger and cheese, side salad and a piece of chicken with the breading peeled off. Did not wrestle the kids for the fries or mozzerella sticks. Didn't even have ONE!

Hi to the other Lynne out there.

  • Checking in -- Kate, 04:26:03 04/10/02 Wed
    Howdy Guys,

I'm still afloat. Swam 24 laps yesterday and want to squeeze in 27 today before work. Actually I swim sets of three lengths, one each of freestyle, breast and backstroke, so yesterday it was 16 sets and today I'll shoot for 18. I'm still not cheating. Have I mentioned that I find a small wedge of raw green cabbage to be a very satisfying snack? I usually have it with something else, like a few olives or macademia nuts or some cheese. I have one of these snacks with club soda on ice when I get home from swimming and it sure takes the edge off.

Looking forward to a gorgeous lc day for all of us. Oh! almost forgot. Down a pound this morning.

  • Hi everyone -- Sherry, 18:44:39 08/01/02 Thu
I've been good so far today. Had turkey slices for breakfast, tostada without beans or shell for lunch plus one bottle of water. Had a little cream and Torani syrup for a snack just now.

Tried to workout this morning and didn't get very far. I'm disturbed that my body seems unable to lift the weight I was lifting not that long ago. It worries me. For the longest time I was increasing the weights quite often and getting stronger and stronger. I've gotten to the point where I feel weaker. Getting weight stuck on my chest and unable to summon the strength to lift it off, that sort of thing. It is kinda scary.

I think my lousy diet all through July may have something to do with it. Hormones may be working against me too, I couldn't say for sure, but it is very unusual.

Anyway I have set some new goals for August. I'm aiming for 8 pounds off, (at some point during the month I want to his that low, my body tends to gain back once it hits a new low, so if I'm not there by the end of the month but hit it sooner that is fine).

I'm also aiming for 70 pounds on the free weight bench press. (I'm doing 60 now, only lately I've been pooping out at about 5 reps). I'm aiming for 120 pounds on the pull down. Can do 90 to 100 pounds now.

I'm also aiming to stick to induction for two solid weeks without cheating. It has been too long since I've been that good.

July was an odd month for me. I didn't lose any weight, didn't hit any new lows, didn't really try that hard to accomplish anything new. But I did work out, and in doing so managed to keep from gaining a lot back (in spite of all my cheating). That feels really GOOD to me. Funny how that works. Just knowing that I can eat reasonably normally and still KEEP the weight off is a great feeling. Of course, I would have done better if I had stuck to plan and worked out, but one out of two isn't too bad.

  • Thinking of boycotting my scale again -- Kel, 06:48:17 08/01/02 Thu
My scale often discourages me. For example, there are days when you are good on your diet, and there are other days where you are super-good. Yesterday I had a super-good day, where there is NOTHING I did that was wrong; everything was right, even the portions of protein (which I have a problem controlling sometimes). Scale still shows 142.

I'm thinking of boycotting the darned thing for a week or two just so I don't get discouraged by it again. I woke up psyched to start the new 3-day challenge, and instead now I'm in the "why-bother" mode simply because of what the scale said.

I'm going to overcome this mood today though, because I know I'm doing everything right. Yesterday I did my weight-training at the PD gym for an hour. Today I feel all bloated and my rings on my fingers are strangling me. If it's going to make me puffy every time I work out, I gotta tell ya, I'm thinking of stopping the workouts. I don't like feeling puffy. I'm trying to do the weight training to HELP me, not make me retain water and feel bloated. What does everyone else do about this problem?

  • Question -- Cyndie, 12:43:52 07/31/02 Wed
I have been thinking on & off for a month or so of starting low-carb. I need to lose about 25-30 pounds and it's just not coming off with watching my portions, calories, etc. The only thing is, I have a friend who started Atkins back in February...she lost 30 pounds very quickly and has stayed with this WOE religiously since then - keeping her carbs around 30 or so day. However, she hasn't lost any more weight since the beginning of April, and I know positively that she isn't cheating. She's decided to give up completely and try Weight Watchers. Now, my question is: Is this normal? This seems to me to be much longer than a stall. Does low carb work for everybody? Any help would be appreciated - I have learned a lot from reading posts on this forum.

I have been over weight most of my life, There have been those short periods when I was considered "normal". My mother tried every diet there was, remember the diet "candy" AIDS? Sure doctors can prescribe medicines that flush the fat from the body but are the long term effects? Do you live on these pills for the rest of your life? I know a number of people who Have had surgery done and do you know some actually gained the weight back? I'm not saying these things don't work, just that it's not for everyone. Finding the right way of eating for your own body and learning to live a healthy lifestyle is what works. I lost over a hundred pounds ten years ago, eating right excercising like a mad person. Then I stopped excercising like a had been doing but eating like I was. All my doctors kept telling me -Low fat eat your fruits and vegetables, lean meats. Yes I would lose, though it never seems to stay off. I can't just eat a slice of bread or a "small" bagel ( who sells small bagels anyway). Thank you again Shara for setting up this forum, finally a place I can express myself with people who truly understand.

Can you hear that little roaring sound? That's your motivation revving its engines. Listen closely tomorrow morning and you'll hear it burning rubber as you take off into the new month.

That's right, everyone. Tomorrow is August 1st!!! The first day in a brand new month. Another chance to set some goals, dream a few dreams, and head closer to our targets.

I thought that I'd post my goals for this month here.

Stay at 30-40 carbs a day
Exercise at least once a week
Come and read the message boards when I feel like cheating
If I allow myself an off-plan day (my birthday) keep it to just the one day

So... I know y'all are with me. What are your goals for the month?

  • Homemade version of Atkins Bake Mix? -- Shelley, 09:51:48 07/29/02 Mon
Hi everyone! Love this site. So much enthusiasm and wonderful results. I've been doing LC/Atkins for almost a week and find it the best diet ever!

My problem with this diet is with using the expensive bake mixes and other products. In reading the ingredients for Atkins bake mix, it looks like it's mostly soy flour. Does anyone out there have a homemade version of this bake mix that can be made so much more inexpensively? I would sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

Hello all. I have enjoyed the postings and felt compelled to dive in. The male gender is way under represented.
I am doing Protein Power ... 2nd trip down the road. I lost 67 pounds 3 years ago, drifted away from the plan and gained it back. That threat that if you leave the WOL and WOE you will gain it back...I have proved it, don't bother experimenting on your own.
I have been back for 2 weeks and 3 days. 276/271/200.
I have survived the brutal 1'st week and am feeling great again. No desires to cheat and if it takes 100 years I will get where I'm going. Looking forward to talking to everyone.

  • My birthday is coming up -- Katie, 10:44:52 07/30/02 Tue
I haven't decided whether to splurge for the birthday dinner or not, but I was cruising the Atkins site for a birthday cake and found the following recipe. It sounds great to me, and if I decide to stick to my WOE I'll probably make this.

    Molten Chocolate Cakes
Dont overbake these decadent little dessertsthey should be gooey in the centers.

    Ingredients
    6 tablespoons butter
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
    1 tablespoon Atkins Bake Mix
2 large eggs, at room temperature
2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
    8 packets sugar substitute
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Directions
    1. Heat oven to 375º F. Generously grease four 6 ounce custard cups with shortening and dust with bake mix. Place cups on a baking sheet.
    2. Melt butter and chocolate in a double boiler. Remove from heat; cool. Stir in bake mix. Transfer to a large bowl.
    3. With an electric mixer on high, beat eggs, egg yolks, sugar substitute and vanilla until almost firm peaks form, about 4 minutes.
    4. In three additions, fold egg mixture into chocolate mixture. Divide batter in cups.
    5. Bake 8-9 minutes until toothpick inserted near edge comes out clean and inserted in center comes out with batter. Cool 3 minutes. Run knife around edge, turn upside down to release onto serving plates. Serve immediately

Shara, I'm not sure how the copywrite thing works, so didn't post this to the recipe index. Let me know if it's okay to post there, because these sound yummy!

I've been doing atkins for 6 weeks now,i've lost 24lbs so far.I'm starting to see a pattern of weight loss, for me anyway,i just wondered if others have the same type of pattern. It seems i lose anywhere from 3 to 6 lbs in one week(i lost 6 lbs last week!)and then nothing the following week. Then i start to lose the week after that.It almost seems like my body just takes a little resting period after each week of losing. Does this happen with any of you? It's fantastic one week but a bummer the next, lol. But as long as it keeps coming off i'm not complaining!

So this is it. The last challenge of the month. How are we all doing???

I'm doing great! I brought food and didn't bring any money to work, so that I wouldn't be tempted to cheat.

C'mon, gang!!! We can do this!!!

    BTW... who's up for August?

  • Good Morning -- Kel, 07:18:05 07/30/02 Tue
Still feeling a little rotund this morning. It always takes me a few days to recover from a cheat I don't know why. Anyway, scale still says 143 today, but I'm thinking there are a number of factors contributing to that. I probably shouldn't have weighed myself.

If I don't at least get back to 141 by the end of the month, I will be disappointed. However, I think I can save myself by making my August goal the expected 4lb loss, plus whatever weight is needed to get back to 141. Meaning my August goal will be 137. That will be a little more challenging, but not impossible. It's still a realistic goal. Everyone else ready for August challenges?

  • Harvard's Willett Statement on Dietary Fat & Obesity -- Laura Richard, 11:13:00 07/30/02 Tue
    Hi Low Carb Friends,

By now I am sure you have heard the name of Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard - our new best friend. In the May 2002 issue of the journal Obesity Reviews Dr. Willett states in concise, clear language that he does not believe dietary fat causes obesity. The unusual title is great alone: "Dietary Fat Plays A Major Role in Obesity: No."

But as great as the title is, the text is even better. He concludes by saying, "Moreover, within the United States (US), a substantial decline in the percentage of energy from fat during the last two decades has corresponded with a massive increase in obesity, and similar trends are occurring in other affluent countries. Diets high in fat do not account for the high prevalence of excess body fat in Western countries; reductions in the percentage of energy from fat will have no important benefits and could further exacerbate this problem. The emphasis on total fat reduction has been a serious distraction in efforts to control obesity and improve health in general."

Wow! Could that be any clearer? Gotta love that Dr. Willett!

  • AHA's New Statement on Sugar & Heart Disease -- Laura Richard, 17:56:43 07/24/02 Wed
    Hello LC Friends,

The new July 23 issue of "Circulation: The Journal of The American Heart Association" is out with a very interesting scientific statement from the AHA entitled "Sugar and Cardiovascular Disease: A Statement for Healthcare Professionals From the Committee on Nutrition of the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism of the American Heart Association." It reviews studies relevant to the issue of sugar consumption (both pro and con) and briefly explores its connection to cardiovascular disease (CVD) . While the overall statement attempts to straddle the fence a bit, there are some statements in the conclusion section that might indicate they are starting to get it.

They begin the conclusion section by pointing out that long-term data relating sugar consumption to the development of CVD are unavailable. However, they continue by clearly stating that "....shorter-term studies show consistent adverse effects of sugar consumption on HDL and triglyceride levels, which could accelerate atherosclerosis. High sugar consumption may worsen diabetes control, and the combination of sugar with protein and fats promotes formation of dietary AGEs, which may be especially detrimental to those with diabetes. Although increasing the amount of sugar in an isocaloric diet does not directly lead to changes in energy expenditure or weight gain in controlled feeding studies, high-sugar foods, which are sweet and calorie dense, may increase calorie consumption and lead to weight gain."

They continue, "Furthermore, replacement of whole foods with high-sugar foods compromises attainment of adequate dietary vitamin and mineral intake from whole food sources." They also point out that "No data suggest that sugar intake per se is advantageous, and some data suggest it may be detrimental. The studies above, taken in total, indicate that high sugar intake should be avoided. Sugar has no nutritional value other than to provide calories. To improve the overall nutrient density of the diet and to help reduce the intake of excess calories, individuals should be sure foods high in added sugar are not displacing foods with essential nutrients or increasing calorie intake."

OK, so they have some work to do until they really get it but they are getting closer. At least they admit that sugar is an issue which indicates their denial might be breaking down?

To read the full statement, go here:

She is down at least 60 pounds and looking beautiful. She works crazy hours and says her energy levels are much better, her blood pressure and cholestrol are lower. I'm following the Carbohydrate addicts diet, she had joined an excercise club for woman who's founder follows the Atkin plan. Since finding the Hellers plan and this forum I found that a modified plan was for me. My sister seemed to be eating the same things and not trying news ways, I told her about Shari and the fantastic information I get from this site.

  • I'm back, did ya miss me? -- Kel, 05:27:33 07/29/02 Mon
Holy smokes! I gained 3 lbs in 3 days - ugh! Okay I'm back in the saddle today; didn't do so great yesterday. It's hard to stay on plan when you're training a new (very young) officer and all he wants to eat is crap. Judging by his diet alone, he's going to make a great officer lol... I think I get to cut him loose today (yay), we'll see after I talk to my boss. After that, it's NO EXCUSES right?

I want to make sure I can wear my new shorts like they looked last Friday when I bought them. I would very much like to be back down to 140 by the end of this month. Hope I can do it!

  • 3 days now -- Lynne, 06:22:03 07/27/02 Sat
    Hi everyone,

I have been working on CAD for 3 days now, and have lost 2 lbs. Have been reading all the past posts and have learned LOTS from you already. Started out by going to the library and checking out as many LC books as I could find. (atkins was not on the shelf, still plan to read him) Chose to try the Heller's Carb addicts plan. The idea of the reward meal was one I really liked. Seems pretty easy to follow, and I have found I am not nearly as hungry now? hard to believe. It is 9:15 AM, my stomach is growling, but I am not hungry! seems impossible. I will eat as soon as I turn off the computer. I am 5'3" 288 (that is so hard to admit to, but anyone who sees me is not fooled!) I also have tryed to join in a chat, and can't seem to get the times right (I am on the east coast)

I hope to continue this forever, but told myself give it at least a one month trial.

Thanks for all the encouragement I have already found.

Myabe its time to move on. I am almost at goal now but I know I will need support to maintain this loss. I had a bad time over July with my Exercise Challenge, I did very poorly. I am not that self disciplined like you Sherry but I plan to be one day!

I love ham and roast beef, but was scared to buy any. For now I will just stick with what I know are acceptable, but if you have any input please let me know. THANKS

  • New product in the store -- Shara, 20:43:34 07/27/02 Sat
I tried something called Tofu Steak in the grocery store today. It was pretty good. The kind that I had was garlic and pepper and they had a little soy sauce on them. I sometimes use a firm tofu to make lasagne and bought some today. It only has 1 g of carbs in it and it is a nice change of pace. If you want to know more I found a website with pictures of the product and additional recipes.

  • Hi, I'm been LC for 3 months. I have some Questions. -- Clorassia, 13:59:13 07/27/02 Sat
I've lost 30 lbs so far since end of February. It's been great. I want to lose 70lbs more.
I have some questions that I hope you experienced LCers can help me with.
    1. I've recently added working out to my schedule (some aerobics, some muscle toning with Richard simmons.)
I've noticed that my muscles get really tired. Is it just me or does it have to do with LCing.

    2. Does anyone have any suggestions for the extra skin and loose fat that is hanging (hooray, but it looks gross) now around my middle? Will it eventually go away with toing or is it something I'll have to live with?

Thanks for all your support just by reading your postings has been helpful.

    Thanks,
    Clorassia

I am a college student and I happen to work at a fast food resturant....and in my investigating of the diet I am about to embark on I have become an observists in terms of what is in everything.....and I have to tell u I am shocked at the revelation that everything.....and I do mean everything at the resturant I work in has some form of sugar added to the food!!!!!!

The light goes on and off in my head now...this is why when I eat a sandwhich I feel bloated and lethargic...etc. This is very serious and dangerous in my opinion..I know a couple of customers who are diabetic......and just today I told them that they shouldn't eat there anymore.....I thought they might get irritated..but actually they were grateful for my concern....how in the world did this happen?
Where did we ever think that it is simply ok to overload our societie's food with nitrates and sugars of all kinds..meanwhile marketing them as "good" for u, or my favorite, "heart" healthy?

Well I could babble on and on...I am just so wierded out by all these revelations....can't help but get on my soap box!!!

I went on my clothes-shopping trip today, trying to duplicate the cute lil outfit I wanted to buy from Newport News... oh my gosh, was I ever delighted to find size 11 short shorts that fit me PERFECTLY! They were cheaper than Newport News too so I bought 2 pair, both different manufacturers too so I know the size isn't just running large. I may go back and get more -- they make my hiney look so dang cute lol.

Just had to share this with yall, I still need to lose around 16 lbs., but it sure is nice to see some progress finally -- and to find something cute to wear while I'm working on it! Of course today was my planned cheat day, so I'll probably feel like a blob tomorrow, but at least I'll have some motivation to get back on plan -- to stay in my brand new size shorts! My grocery bill is much higher than before. Although I've cut back on ice cream and cookies. Now it's fruit and veggies for my kid. Where I live for some reason the potatoes have gone up to almost $4.00 for 5 lbs. so I try not to buy too many of them. But I still have to cook potatoes and rice or pasta for my family. I, on the other hand, should buy stocks in mozzarella cheese. I eat a lot of cheese and lunch meats, ham and turkey, for salads. Of course I have to have more meat with my dinner than my hubby or kid so it all adds up. The one good thing about this way of eating is that we don't go to McDonalds or Burger King as much. So I'm saving some money there.

  • Fruit -- Shara, 00:43:49 07/25/02 Thu
I've seen some talk about fruit lately and which ones are the "best". When I started the diet I only looked at the total carb count of everything, but as time went on I devised a way of "sorting" my food, especially fruit. The way I sorted the food was a method of my making that you may or may not agree with. I've posted it on the resources page here:

    http://dietlowcarb.com/html/fruit.htm

Let me know if it helps, basically I've ranked food by nutritionaly count verses carbohydrates that I would "spend" if I were to eat them. I used to list everything. I was so desperate to lose weight I would spend hours planning out how long I would have to diet and how much I would weigh on any given day if I stuck to the plan. So far the low carb diet is the only one that has come close to those plans.

Today is Amy's birthday! Ugh, I am not ready to admit that my daughter is 16 years old. I took her driving last night and it's just not fair how grown up she looks. We won't be having the party until Friday night. About 20 teens with a multi-colored theme, neon lights all over the backyard and me trying not to "get in the way". he he

    Thrilled to find this site!!

I am on day 3 of induction, so far so good. Light headache but thats it.

    Few things I find confusing...
In the book we read about how FAT is the most fat burning
thing to eat. Then it says lean eating is best.
The Fat Fast is 90% fat. So how much fat are you eating?

My career dieting has me wanting to really limit my portions
but if I read correctly, more is better for metabolism, to little stops metab. Is this correct?

Also What are most doing about Caffiene?
Most recent research I read says Caffiene is a metab boost
and is good esp before exercise.

Last, Is there anyone who has actually done the Fat Fast?
If so how did it go?

    Thx in advance.
I love reading all the great info here.

I have an event to attend in 4wks so I am really motivated.
Want to make this a WOE for life!!!!!!

    Smiles,

  • Dextrose -- Shara, 12:04:24 07/25/02 Thu
I'm so glad you've gotten into weight lifting Sherry. I think it is a great way to get your body in shape. One thing that I did especially when I was just starting out was ingest some sort of dextrose about 15 min before starting a set. Now don't get me wrong, I am not telling anyone to eat sugar, but the best form of dextrose that I could find was in those straw pixi stix that kids eat. Just the small ones, not the ones shaped like a hoola hoop. Your muscles need the extra energy when you lift weights and you usually burn up to an additional 15 carbs in the form of dextrose from the workout so it did not hurt my weight loss. It gave me the additional stamina to finish all the sets that I did on the universal gym. Before I did it I wasn't able to complete the entire set and some of my muscles were not getting an even workout. Just an idea, let me know if anyone tries it. Remember this is for weight lifting only. Muscle intense workouts only.

  • Diverticulitus -- Kel, 05:38:38 07/25/02 Thu
Lately there has been some discussion on another list I subscribe to about a condition called Diverticulitus (sp?)... Anyway, this is the first time I've ever heard of the condition and it doesn't sound like fun. Many folks on this other board either have it, or they know all about it, yet I've never seen it discussed here. From what I'm reading on the other list is that it is a condition that develops from not getting enough fiber and it lasts for life.

I follow a moderate LC plan and I already get a lot of fiber in my diet, plus I take fibercon everyday, so I don't think this will ever be an issue for me, but still it got me thinking. What is this thing?

  • Okay Newbies? Some advice... -- Kel, 05:13:06 07/25/02 Thu
It never ceases to amaze me how many people new to LC will watch a news program or see a co-worker lose a lot of weight and say, "I want to do that too." They get an idea of what they can and cannot eat from only this one source -- and that's it!

Boom, they go on the diet without any knowledge of how or why it works. I guess they think a $7-$10 book isn't worth it to learn how to work the plan properly. My goodness people! EDUCATE yourself! You are missing valuable information, tips and nutritional know-how by not reading at least ONE of the LC books out there right now. You will never be a success on a LC plan without understanding the simple science behind it. When I first got interested in LC, I wanted to follow Atkins. I went to Barnes & Noble to buy the book, and fortunately I flipped through a few pages of it first before I purchased it... The entire section on "sample menus" had been ripped out by someone who didn't want to buy the book, but obviously wanted to start the diet. Do you think that person was successful on LC?? Not likely!

Hey bottom line is you are WORTH it okay? Take the 10 bucks, buy the book, read the dang thing. Your health and your body depend on it, so be smart and educate yourself and plan to succeed. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail -- simple as that. You can't properly plan without the knowledge it takes so stop procrastinating and read the book. If you are truly that broke, then check-out a copy from the library. There are many great LC books out there -- Atkins, Protein Power, Schwarzbien Principle, Carbohydrate Addicts. All of them have valuable information you NEED to succeed on this WOE. Good luck!

  • Going off -- Sherry, 09:11:25 07/24/02 Wed
I've been major going off on excercise lately. I found a message board for weight lifters, and posted some questions there. I started by looking for some sort of excercise to strengthen my neck muscles (with all the other stuff I'm doing I didn't want that to be the weak link, and wind up hurting my neck).

Anyway the guys gave me that advice and a lot more. They told me that 15 to 20 repetitions is for endurance, 8 to 10 is where I should be training, and that 4 to 5 was for gains. Essentially each set should be so heavy that by the 8 to 10th rep you feel like you just can't quite lift it.

I tried that yesterday with the bench press I was doing. I was doing 60 pounds (free weights) and the first set I almost couldn't do 10, by the third set I was giving up at 6. I'm using my kids for "spotters" to help me lift that last little bit of weight off me. (They love helping).

It is amazing the gains that are happening as a result though. Last time I did the bench press I lifted 50 pounds, then yesterday it was 60.

One guy says to rest a week between lifts. I haven't been doing that (because my objective is still weight loss), but I'm considering it for certain excercises. Muscles need time to heal, and I guess the more time (within reason) that you give them before stressing them again, the stronger they become.

Of course we all know that most of the fashions for women today are made form-fitting, slender, skin-tight, low-rise, etc. Those fashions are great for the 10% of the population that can wear them properly. But what about the rest of us? I don't weigh a ton, but I know better than to try and wear something that's going to show my midriff or belly. The last thing my belly is - is flat!

So because I don't have that skinny little body or flat belly, I'm forced to buy things that are not fashionable for the times? That's just plain ignorant. The fashion industry needs to look around -- do you see model-types all around or do you see mostly normally built or overweight people? Who in the heck is buying all these clothes that such a small portion of the population can fit into? Do the teenagers really have THAT much money to support such an industry? My goodness, I just think it might be a good idea to design some clothes that are fashionable and somewhere between the junior-section and Lane Bryant! Is that asking too much?

I'm going clothes shopping on Friday and I'm at a loss as to where to start looking for something that will be in fashion, yet still look good on my 140 (yes I made 140 today), 5'4" body. Any suggestions my friends?

Thanks to those who answered my other posting. I am starting to feel more energy, but my night cravings are really rough! I have parrots and I most feed them a variety of fruits and veggies so that makes it rough, knowing those necterines and mangoes are sitting in the frig. I had pineapple as my carb last night. What I'm a bit confused about is which fruits are low carbs? Does anyone know?

Did anyone see the follow up story on dateline?Josh Mankowitz was bombarded with all sorts of negative email about his story on his dieting on atkins. He laughed it off and basically said "it's good for me and it works" so calm yourselves down.He read some of the emails and some of them were quite graphic about meat eaters. But he also had a lot of succees story emails as well.

I will just reply to the responses at once. All great ideas I have read Atkins, suzanne somers, protein power and Neanderthin and Low carb addicts or something like that. Any way we are goiing to follow the Protein Power it seems to be middle of the road. I followd a low carb diet several years ago andwas succeseful but didn't stay with and it was just counting the carbs. I agree that 2 weeks of sticking with it and then modify what works for us is a good idea. I go back to work on Aug. 20 so I would like to be in to this a before going back. ( Work at a school)

  • Close to 140 this morning! -- Kel, 06:12:46 07/23/02 Tue
Not quite 140 but close! Probably like 140-1/4lbs, but I posted my weight at 140.5 this morning on the flocers board. I'm hoping that I will be at 140 by Friday, which is my planned cheat day. I'm guessing I might gain 1-2lbs on my cheat day, but I plan to get right back to LC WOL the next day and maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I'm shooting for 140 by the end of the month. Can I do it?? Hope so!

I worked out with weights after work yesterday, but I don't think I got a lot out of it. It seemed more difficult to me to do some of the lifts than it was on last Friday, and that was discouraging. I didn't put a lot of mind to the matter after that. Maybe things will be better when I do it again on Wednesday. Hope so.

  • question -- Janie, 14:29:55 07/23/02 Tue
Ok my husband isn't really on the bans wagon with me yet.I am going ahead with it and he will have to eat what i eat. He also needs to lose a significant amount of weight. He doesn't want to give up his coca cola. He is a big bread and potato eater more so than I am. My question what about "cheating" maybe once a week maybe a little less than that. I think if he know that he can have some of his favorites onnce in a while it might improve his out look. Mine too in the long run. What has been your responses from your doctors. I am going to see mine Friday for my annual physical and I am informing him of my plans mainly because I am on a water pill and want to make sure I don't have any problems.

I have been reading about low carb eating and in my head i agree with it. It is hard to not think that you are doing something wrong when we have been told to eat low fat. OF course I don't stay with that any way. I too watched the news program the other night and it got to thinking about this again. Ihaven't lost any weight any other way. I am certainly not eating in a healthy way by any stretch of the imagination. I have read different books on this (Atkins, Protein Power, Suzanne Somers and a few more) I think we are going to try the Protein Powe. How have aother people done trying this? I ultimately would like to lose 60 lbs and keep it off. Right now I am going to concentrate on 20 lbs. I go to the doctor Friday and I am going to inform him what I am going to do. I am am going to try and come back to this site for inpiration on a regular basis.

Hi everyone. I've been messing with the Atkins diet for a couple years. I can barely stick to it for any length of time. While I haven't really lost any I'm positive it has kept me from gaining. If it wasn't for the attempts at the diet I'd probably weigh well over 200. As it is I'm about 192. Anyway, I need support and ideas to help me stick to the diet. After about one week I start feeling like I'm going to barf if I have to eat another protein item.

I began the Akins Diet yesterday. I feel fine but I do miss cereal and some bread. Is it ok to limit carb intake and how much is too much in order to lose weight. Also I have read that carbs are important for brain function. I want to be healthy and lose weight. Is eating low carbs dangerous to my health. I need your input and support.

Well everyone I thought things were grand until this morning. I have been doing this diet for almost 3 months and went from 212 to 190. I was so excited. Today I got on the scale and gained 5 lbs. I have been following the diet and I don't bounce around on the scale. I hope it is just water retention, but it is not that TOM for another 2 weeks. I just about cried.

    Has anyone had similar experiences?

  • eating out -- Shara, 13:17:18 07/22/02 Mon
As we were sitting in the restaurant last night I saw a sign that said "I can resist anything except temptation". That statement is true for me especially when I eat out. Many restaurants offer low carb foods and will substitute salad for fries etc., but somehow I start telling myself "oh, that's ok, I'll just not eat them, or someone else will". Don't do this! It is the kiss of death cause if it's in front of me I'll eat it. I got here the same way that all of you did, I was overweight and needed to find a diet that I could live with. I still struggle at times, maybe not as much as I used to, but I still do. This is not just a temporary thing you will do to lose weight. Weight control is a lifelong thing and it's up to you to maintain it once you start getting to your goal. But then again, I have never been near a goal until I found the low carb plan so just being here is a great first step. I know, I take one every day by coming here and being with all of you. You are my best inspiration.

  • Need Sympathy (loads of it!!) -- Zoe (Moody), 15:53:12 07/22/02 Mon
    Hello all-

I've had the most horrible week-end! I had my wisdom teeth taken out on friday (they were impacted!). I have been living on eggs and oatmeal since then. I tried eating meat in small pieces, but my jaw is sooo sore I can't chew anything without considerable pain...I had to call in sick to work this morning. I didn't think I was going to make it. Between the vicodin, the penicillin and the discomfort, I feel totally frustrated! I gained a pound over the weekend!!
I started induction again today...I have been cutting my food in tiny little pieces and hopefully it will help me out. I am also drinking loads of water. I never stopped doing that. I can't even yawn!! ha ha. I can't wait until i go back to eating my regular food. I don't feel comfortable eating all that cereal...
Any ideas as to what I can do? Things I can eat while my gums heal from the surgery?

    Thanks in advance.

    Much love,

    Zoe (Moody <=I really am)

  • U of Connecticut Research on Ketogenic Diet -- Laura Richard, 17:33:57 07/22/02 Mon
    Hi Guys,

This is another great study released this month that is very similar to the finding from the great Duke study released last week. In this study, entitled "A Ketogenic Diet Favorably Affects Serum Biomarkers for Cardiovascular Disease in Normal-Weight Men," researchers from the University of Connecticut evaluated the effects of 6 weeks of ketosis on blood lipids including cholesterol. They found that the men in the study who were in ketosis had significantly lower triacylglycerol (-33%), lower total blood fats (-29%), and much lower insulin levels (-34%). They noted that HDL ("good cholesterol") rose (11.5%) while total cholesterol did not rise. They concluded that a short-term ketogenic diet does not have negative effect on the risk for heart disease and may, in fact, improve disorders relating to high blood fats that often lead to cardiovascular disease.

To read the abstract of the study in the Journal of Nutrition, go here:
    http://www.nutrition.org/cgi/content/abstract/132/7/1879

This study is included in my low carb research database at my web site along with over 100 additional links to LC research that provides you with the information you need to educate your family, friends, physicians and other health care providers about the benefits of LCing. This collection includes prestigious sources such as Harvard University, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford University and major scientific publications such as American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

  • I need a huge truck load of YOU CAN DO IT... because I just dont know anymore -- Teresa marie, 17:31:51 07/21/02 Sun
First of all I know I'm not going to say anything that you guys haven't said already and felt... and I am so happy for you all for the mini goals that you've met and BIG GOALS!! Its taken me 7 years to finally love me as I am and put the belittling of yesterdays from my ex...... back in his lap where they belong due to his lack of compassion and his self centeredness. Its funny how when I was small 10 years ago I had a mental image of being "fat" and finally after seeing myself through the eyes of others.... I am able to picture myself as a "thin" person again because I know that is a tool to success but reality tells me that I'm not thin and I need help now with my encouragement. My head tells me that I want to be loved just as I am right now and then I'll know its REAL love.....but that strategy doesn't help me to loose the weight. And I need to do this for me. I'm so tired of hearing, "You have such a beautiful smile and face", if onlyyyyyyyyy. I just need to do it like I do with my career and everything else in my life but ...... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! And I really have no support system where I live. I live in my home town again and everyone see's me as the Teresa that "Use to be built so good". I'm going to humble myself and pray that God blesses me with words of wisdom and encouragements and friendships, from you guys so that I can be there for you and so that I can, with your help, put this "visible hurt" away.
Thank you for being gifts of kindness and love and have the ability to see beyond and inside others :)

  • I HATE weekends -- Joe, 04:37:27 07/22/02 Mon
If i didnt have to deal with weekends i would have been at my goal weight a long time ago.

I do well from Monday thru Thursday or Friday. Then on the weekends i lose my momentum and screw up. I think a lot of it has to do with just being at home and being bored, especially i the Mrs. is working and me and the kids are just hanging out at home.

Summer makes things worse because we attedn quite a few cookouts. These are tough on me because they are my favorite dinner occasion. Nothing beats a burger, beer, baked beans, egg, macaroni and potato salad. For the entire time i have been on Atkins i have not been able to resist a cookout.

Fortunately it is only one meal, and i usually dont gain large amounts of weight from it, but it is enough to stall me and add a few pounds and takes me a while to remove it.

I just wish i could make it through one weekend without falling off the wagon. Maybe after the summer is over i can get back on track fulltime.
