  • Supplements- Maybe for Oral Contraceptive Users -- Tierra, 12:32:32 05/16/02 Thu
Hey all. I haven't been posting much since I have been so busy at work, planning a wedding, planning a class reunion, raising my chickens and gardening... however, I just wanted to let you all know about my little experiment...
I have been low-carbing since January of 2000. I lost about 18 pounds the first year- (I started at 183 pounds, 5'3"). I went off the low carb way of eating from September of 2000-December of 2000 and promptly gained back 15 pounds... That sealed it for me, I wasn't coming off again... So, January of 2001, starting at 180 pounds, I managed to lose about 20 pounds in the first five or six months, and then sort of plateaued around 160, give or take a pound or two for the rest of the year. So, this year, I started researching different avenues, and kept coming back to problems with birth control. However, instead of stopping birth control pills, (i have no desire to argue about other options, i looked further into it, and the more I looked, the more I found about deficiencies of B-vitamins and especially folic acid for oral contraceptive users.. I have always taken a multi-vitamin with 100% RDA of the 13 vitamins + various minerals, but in addition, for the past 3 months, I have started supplementing over and beyond that. I have started taking a 500 mg B-Vitamin complex at night that contains between 200% and 5000% of some of the B-vitamins, as well as a 500mcg folic acid vitamin with breakfast and lunch... I have also added a 500 mg. calcium/magnesium pill with lunch (though I eat plenty of cheese/yogurt/spinach/brocoli that in addition with my multivitamin, is my required RDA to start with... Finally, I have been taking CLA 3 times a day for the past three months... I have not changed my eating habits (40-60 grams of carbs a day) nor my exercise habits (yoga 3 times a week, gardening/outside work 2 times a week, and walking on a treadmill for 3 miles 3 times a week, plus some free weights whenever i remember), but in the three months, I have lost 9 pounds... I know that it isn't that much, and that taking supplements can get expensive, but, I have lost inches as well and have received more compliments about losing weight in the past 3 months then in the whole 20 pound drop before... so, I just wanted to share my experience with those who may have plateaued for a while.. This was in no ways a scientific experiment, but it has worked for me so far... 11 more pounds to go!

  • No Stopping Us. -- Sherry, 08:28:39 05/17/02 Fri
I love that name. I feel sort of stopped, but I'm hoping it is only temporary. Scale was down another pound (or two) this morning, it hovered between 230 and 231. Still 4 pounds above my recent low of 227.

I'm sure part of the difference is not eating as much for breakfast. When I upped my calories I was eating cream cheese and chicken early in the morning. After today I will start doing that again.

The good news is that even with the increased weight I was still able to wear my size 18 jeans. I guess I may have gone up pound wise, without increasing size that much. Extra water or something. I'm not giving up and even if I do have a temporary hormonal or water retention related setback, I'm still here. I WON'T be defeated by any scale playing tricks on me.

Guess I will go make some deviled eggs....

  • Scale back down to 146 -- Kel, 07:10:18 05/17/02 Fri
I guess it looks as if the 'real' weight I gained in 2 weeks of cheating is only 5 lbs (whew). I was starting to freak out lol.

I did really well on my plan yesterday, despite a bunch of pressure thrown at me at work. Same ole thing, the people making decisions inside, do not know what it's like in the field. This is understandable, so you try to explain it to them and then you get a blank stare -- they don't get it. Oh well, part of the job I guess, I can't let it bother me on my 2 days off (today and tomorrow). I've got wayyyy too many things on the agenda today to let things at work bother me. It's a good thing I'm so busy today because traditionally, the 2nd day on plan is usually the hardest for me.

I'm going to do my beginning stretch video I bought -- haven't even opened the dang thing yet and I bought it like 3 months ago! Can you say pro-cras-ti=nate? LOL I knew you could! I hope everyone is well and happy. I'm so glad to be back on plan with you guys. Talk to you soon, Kel

  • More LC Research -- Laura Richard, 10:03:23 05/15/02 Wed
    Hi Guys,

Well, we can certainly tell that it is diet season! It seems that this time of year, study after study is released that relates to diet and obesity. Last week I found two studies relating to LCing that I found interesting so I thought you might want to check them out too.

From Diabetes Care (Journal), 2002: "Low Glycemic Index Diet Decreases Fat Mass & Improves Plasma Lipid Profile in Moderately Overweight Nondiabetic Men," In this study, French researchers report that a low glycemic diet decreased total body fat, increased lean body mass, and improved blood lipids in overweight males. They concluded that a low glycemic diet could be of benefit in preventing metabolic diseases and cardiovascular complications. To read the study, go here: http://care.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/25/5/822

From The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2002: Effect of Whole Grains on Insulin Sensitivity in Overweight Hyperinsulinemic Adults, In this study, Harvard researchers compared the effects of eating lower glycemic whole grains as compared to the effects of eating higher glycemic, refined grains. They found that the lower glycemic whole grain diet lowered insulin levels and improved insulin sensitivity. They concluded that whole grains reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. To read the study go here:
    http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/75/5/848

Both of these studies are included on my web site along with over 60 additional links to LC research that provides you with the information you need to educate your family, friends, physicians and other health care providers about the benefits of LCing. This collection includes prestigious sources such as Harvard University, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford University and major scientific publications such as American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

To access the collection, go to my web site at www.lowcarbsuccess.net and click on the RESEARCH button.

    Happy reading!

Hello folks, this is my first time using a message board. I live on 4o acres in a rural area in a small cabin, with the
best man ever to grace the earth. We live without plumbing, so no bath or indoor toliet. This is all recent, as we left a very stress-ful life in the big city (and our 3bdrm,2bath home)My point is, you can do things you never thought possible. Me? go without plumbing? Go without donuts, cookies etc? I'm new to Atkins, started at 245lbs(Jan)think
I'm around 200lb. Never weigh myself, excited by how loose my clothes are. Can anyone give me a good receipe for low
carb pasta, tasty breads? Atkins bread is too pricey, thou the tortilla's are a great bargain! Also can you share some of your favorite snacks? Life is good here, the coyotes howl at night, ring-neck pheasants cross the road, and I'm often the only one on the road traveling home from the store, and I still can't believe I'm outta those traffic jam's! Life is too short (another reason I'm on Atkin's!)Thanks for the support, it means alot here up in the mountains.

  • Frustrated -- Sherry, 08:22:32 05/16/02 Thu
Well I'm back on my roller coaster. I had lost down to 227 eating more food, but in just four days my weight increased to 235, today it is back down to 232 again.

There isn't much I can do about it right now. Until tomorrow (payday) I can't easily increase calories and still keep them low carb, we just don't have that much protein in the house at the moment.

Finding something I can eat at all, without totally going against the guidelines of the diet is difficult right now. I know I didn't eat enough calories yesterday or the day before.

I think however that I have validated the concept that eating more calories increased my metabolic rate. Two days ago I was SO hungry, it was like I just couldn't get enough food. I'm not usually that hungry, so I think I must have been responding to increased metabolism. Yesterday it was easier to eat less, (but that probably isn't good. I probably slowed myself down again).

Anyway we have five new baby kittens. Three are black and white, one is tortoishell calico, and one is beige. I watched the beige one be born and it was odd, he was totally enclosed in his water bag when he came out. Looked a little like those vitamins that come in a gel capsule.

Couldn't tell at first that he was beige like our Tweaky, I thought (when he was wet) that he might be a little orange kitten. Nope, looks just like his daddy. I raised his daddy from a homeless abandoned kitten that didn't have its eyes open, so it is nice to have one to remind me of him when he was small.

When I did get out of bed, I got on the scale and OOPS, wowie did I gain a lot during my carb-hiatus! Am I gonna get upset, angry and depressed about it? Of course... but I'm also going to get serious. There's no time like the present to take a look at what I've been doing wrong and reaffirm my committment to weight loss & healthy living!

So as of today, I am back on challenge and I hope to lose 5 of these excess pounds by the end of May. I hope you all are well and happy. Have a great day.. Kel

    Weigh-in day again today!

I am back on track after a slight detour around Mother's Day.

I took my new puppy to the Vet this morning, he is being neutered today. I am dog sitting my DDs sharpei (wrinkle dog) for the weekend as she had gone to Florida to visit our DS.
So I went for an hour long Dog Walk in the rain I wasnt moving too fast but felt the benefits of the fresh air and just moving my BUTT. I hope this counts towards reving my metabolishm. Not done much activity this week. All stitches out now and bruising going. Still a bit sore in places but can get out now.

Gonna try to do some floor exercises for flexibility before I have to take the big dog out again for another hour and then I can go and pick up my puppy from the Vet.

Keep it LC, drink the Water, eat those Veggies, get some Exercise, take the Supplements, visit this board daily for Support and Motivation.

  • What is your response? -- Shara, 09:31:04 05/14/02 Tue
I'm working on and FAQ for the diet site. One of the questions that came up was, "How do you respond to people that question the way you are losing weight?". I was curious, how do any of you respond to that? Most people don't know the plan that I'm on or that I'm even dieting. But when they do question me my best response is that "I feel great, I look better, what else is there to know?" What are yours?

  • Scale is bouncing so much, I think it must be related to Tigger -- Katie, 06:27:07 05/16/02 Thu
Yesterday, I finally broke my 243-245 bounce, and was actually at 242. This morning it was 245. I got the baby to take a nap yesterday evening, and got to take a nap myself, which I really needed. My SO woke me up when he got home from work and took one look at me and said that we were going to eat out.

He doesn't get home from work until after 8:00 and by the time we made it out of the house it was almost 9:00. The only thing left open that late here is fast food and the Chinese buffet. I knew before I walked in the door of the buffet that it was going to make my weight bounce back up no matter how careful I was.

I forgot to take my B vitamins yesterday on top of the high sodium content of the food. To top it off, we couldn't get anyone's attention to bring us drinks and so I couldn't even drink water with my meal.

The good thing is I'm really thirsty today so I hope to get in extra water. I also remembered to take all my supplements this morning. I have a lot of physical activity to do this weekend (finally getting all of my mom's stuff tomorrow, long story) and I have to put it all away. Between that and chasing the baby I should be doing really well on Monday's weigh-in.

    I'm HUNGRY!!!

I was going to go to the store and get a couple of pre-made hamburger patties to bring back to work and cook, but the stupid store didn't have any. The best I could do was some deli counter roast beef and a piece of string cheese. Then on the way to get a bottle of water, I passed by the almonds, and my taste buds started throwing a temper tantrum. I know that what I'm really craving is fat. I'm trying to think of the most fatty thing that I can come up with for dinner. Can it be PMS time again already???

  • I'm hungry again... -- Katie, 08:14:50 05/15/02 Wed
I woke up because my stomach was growling so loud that the sound woke me. It woke my SO too . I don't think it woke up the baby, but he did wake up a few minutes later, so who can be sure.

I know this is a sore point for those of you who are getting closer to goal (and getting smaller and smaller calorie allotments), so feel free to skip my post if you want.

This is a serious issue for me. I checked my calorie counts again, and I haven't been eating enough food. Yesterday I managed just barely to eat enough calories, and even though my carbs were a little higher than usual, I did fine.

Eat until you're satisfied. I have to remember that. I usually just eat until I can get by. I have so many self-esteem issues, and they're really affecting my weight-loss efforts.

I go from "I'm worthless and don't deserve to eat" to "I don't deserve to be thin so I'll eat everything in sight". The crazy thing is, if I could stay in I don't deserve to be thin mode, but keep myself to "legal" foods, I'd be a lot thinner by now. It's the "don't deserve to eat" thing that is holding me back here.

I get angry about something, feel guilty for being angry and end up turning my anger inward. When I try to discuss whatever is making me angry with the person (usually my stepson) that instigated it, I end up shaking so bad that I can't talk.

Does anyone else have issues that are sabotaging their efforts?

Here's hoping I didn't do too much damage to it again.

  • New Recipe -- Maggie, 17:08:59 05/14/02 Tue
You'll soon learn that I love to cook. Here's a recipe I found that sounds good. Let me know if you try it and what you think.

    Italian Tuna and Cheese Spread

This is a fabulously delicious spread that can be made into small balls and served on toothpicks, piped onto cucumber rounds, or served as a dip with raw vegies. Just make sure you choose a sweet Gorgonzola cheese because the other kind has a very pungent aroma and taste. Serves 12 (3 g. carb per serving)

2-8 oz. cream cheese, room temp.
1/4 lb. Dulce (sweet) Gorgonzola cheese, room temp. (Blue cheese can be substituted)
    2 T. minced fresh chives
1 c. pine nuts or chopped walnuts
1-7 oz. can tuna with oil
    1/2 tsp. freshly ground pepper
    1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
    2 T. minced fresh parsley

Place all ingred., except for the parsley, in a processor fitted with a metal blade (or in a blender) and process until smooth. Add the parsley and pulse to blend lightly. Transfer the spread to a coverd dish and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

How long have you all been low-carbing? Also, how much have you lost? I keep hearing bits and pieces from each of you, but I don't know where you started. Just curious. Guess I'm needing some encouragement tonight. I'm doing really well on the induction, food-wise, but I feel pretty rough...nauseated, foggy, some body aches, and oh so tired. ie. I always have a pad of paper and a pencil on my night stand (bedtime seems to get my mind going and I've gotten the writing in the dark stuff down pretty well, too), anyway, last night I was making some notes and fell asleep in the middle of writing. Woke up and found the pencil and pad still in my hand. Hoping this will pass soon.
One more thing...snack foods. What do you keep on hand to grab quickly when you have a craving? Thanks

Funny how those old posts get resurrected.

Anyway all, I forgot to weigh this morning, so I guess I will have to post for the challenge tomorrow. I don't much like Monday weigh-in's anyway, could we set up June's challenge so that we all weigh in on Tuesdays and Fridays? That way we get a day to recover from the weekend before weigh in day....

I shopped for low carb food this morning so I am in better shape for getting back on track. I did buy some stuff to make trail mix however, so I do need to watch how much of that I eat.

My husband is making dinner tonight, I think it will be Chinese food of some sort. Either Mu Shu pork or something chicken.

Anyway we have had such a bare refrigerator for awhile, I'm glad to have some veggys in the house again.

DH was going to take me to lunch today but he wanted taco bell. I told him I'm trying to get back on my diet, and that I couldn't do that, but he was set on it so I said fine, take me to my car then and I will go eat what I need to eat. I came home and had pastrami, ham and cheese for lunch. plus a cream shake. I think I got the better end of things.

Hi. I found this site today and am happy to say that what I've seen so far is helping get in the mood again to try to lose weight. I've tried the low-carb thing before and lost a bit, but then I became pregnant with my second child and gave up for the time being. Well, my daughter is now 2 years old, and so far I haven't been able to get back into things. My main problem is that I've heard so much bad news lately about doing the low-carb thing. Can you guys give me some positive stories or ideas that will make me feel better about trying it again. I love cheese and almost all kings of meats, so that;s not a problem, but man do I LOVE chocolate, which of course will be a problem. I have seen the recipes on this site, though, and am going to try a few.

After that, I am re-committing myself to what's left of the May challenge. Someone mentioned continuing the Challenge in June; I would be very much in favor of that.. maybe we need to start thinking of new names for the June one just to keep things going, or does everyone like this name still?

I can't believe what the scale is saying you guys. It's telling me that I've gained all but 1lb back out of ALL the weight it took me a month and a half to lose! I feel like a blimp! I wish I could just take off this entire week so I don't have to go out there and look like a stuffed sausage in my uniform, but unfortunately, I already have a detail waiting for me this morning so I have no choice. I began induction on Saturday. Had 17 grams of carbs on Sat. and 14 yesterday. I'm feeling a little light headed, nauseated and tired this morning, but not really hungry. Yes, I'm drinking water (Veryfine Brand, flavored, no sugar or carbs...good, too) Peeing like a race horse, frankly. I'm also taking a multipule vitamin. Seems like I read something somewhere about needing to take a potassium suppliment? By the way, I've lost 3.5 lbs., 95 more to go! I CAN do this!

I have been on Quick slim for a while now and am very happy with my progress so far. I never want to be fat again so I am also working on changing how and why I eat plus now I exercise. I'm determined to stay thin once I have reached my goal weight and I'm not far from it thanks to the Quick slim diet. It's working for me when nothing else did.

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day. I spent the morning talking to mine on the phone. As some of you know my Mother is not the most supportive person about this diet. She kept insisting that I would not be able to "live" this way. Well I have "lived" this way for 5 years and am convinced that it's for me. My Mother is starting to come around, especially since she is seeing me at a healthy weight and is happy for me. I think that most parents have a hard time with the fact that their child is overweight. Doesn't someone have to be blamed for that?? There has to be a reason. At least this is the way my Mother felt for years. It's not true. My Mother sat through many WW meetings with me as well as doctor's visits, cooked special meals for me; No, my Mom did OK. My daughter too has learned the LC method is for her, but she has her Father to convince. [Sigh] In any case Mom, I just wanted to thank you. You are the Best Mom I could have and I'm now half the daughter you used to have! (My Mother's words) Have a great day everyone!

Would you have time to direct them to your board and to the database that Kel created for us.

I believe there is a Kathy, Melanie, Maggie and a few others.

Some awhile to go.. it was really fun - most are summer clothes so I can wear them as soon as it warms up in the office.. I still have a bunch in the next size.. Don't think I will have to worry about clothes for another 30 pounds.. think I will start garage saling again for bargain clothes. Probably will have one myself for all the stuff that is too huge on me. I am not keeping them.

Hello everyone and Happy Mother's Day to whomever it applies. I tried a great treat today that I found on a sight call www.lowcarbcafe.com

Basically all you do is take a bag of the pre-cubed cheese, (Pepper Jack is wonderful if you like spicey) Place about 12 of them on a cookie sheet and bake for 7-10 mins. depending on how stiff you want them. Let them cool on the pan for 1 min. and remove with a spatula. To lower the fat, lay them on a sheet of paper towel. I spread mine with the soft, Philadelphia cream cheese (the vegie and salmon are both really good. They also make garlic and chive flavor). They are so good. Enjoy!

Well it finally happened, i fell off the wagon. I had eaten some chicken strips from our school cafeteria (which i have done before without any problems) and yep, it threw me right out of ketosis, then the next morning i got tha bad news that i cant get anything higher than a C in one of my classes. So needless to say this weekend i havnt eaten so well (Note to self: eating half a quart of ice cream in one sitting IS NOT A GOOD IDEA!) So yeah, i have been eating some junk, but not TOO much in the sweets department minus the ice cream binge. However i have been getting a TON of exercise lately, so maybe if i am lucky i am expending those extra calories! Well i get fitted for my prom tux monday so i think that is a good time to get back on the horse and suck it up til the end of may. I hope everyone is doing well as the summer is comming closer and closer!

  • Well my Treasure hunt yesterday -- Sherry, 08:33:10 05/10/02 Fri
Didn't seem to do too much damage. In fact I am a pound lower today. 227

I'm sure it lowered my ketosis levels (to zero), but a few days of being good and I will get that back.

I would have liked to have posted this yesterday on our challenge weigh in day, but the scale was being stubborn yesterday and going up instead (started the day at 230, but after a few trips to the bathroom got it down to 228 Today though I didn't even have to try to "get it down" to anything).

Two more pounds and I will be at 225, then five more to 220.
I still can't get used to being in the 220s. I keep posting that I am in the 230s (I had to change the weight above, almost wrote 237 again). I'm so used to not being able to go below there it is still hard for me to get used to.

I wonder what I will be writing when I get down into the 210s... will I still be writing 230 something? I don't think I have been this weight in about 10 years. I'm excited about starting to lose again. It is so wonderful to see the scale finally start dropping again. See I always knew that my cheating occasionally wasn't the problem. Consistently cheating would be, of course, but occasional cheats should not have stalled me as I was stalled for so long. So glad to finally figure it out, can't believe I was so dense about things for so long.

Anyway have a great low carb day everyone.

Have set a list of "mini-goals" for the next couple of weeks of our challenge. My first one is for 2 more pounds by Monday. Mondays are always difficult for me, because I tend to forget to eat on the weekends, or eat the wrong things.

So I'm trying to think of what I can do in the next two days to make that little goal. Maybe a long walk down our trail? Maybe a few hours of weight lifting in the basement? Another crack at my yoga tapes? Problem is excercise seems to make me go up (retain a little more water) and making a goal that way only becomes harder. (at least a short term goal like 'by Monday').

Maybe I will do it anyway. The kids might enjoy a trail walk. I think I will wait til this evening when it is starting to get cooler though. Maybe a little yoga this morning will work for now.

I've been on the Atkins Diet for almost two months. I haven't lost a pound. I have lost mass, in that I am a bit smaller, not not much. I eat EAS low-carb bars, Atkins Shakes, or EAS low-carb shakes almost every day to replace one or two meals. Then I eat just meat and vegetables or salad, and cheese or nuts. I also go to the gym about three times a week for 45 minutes. I take the Atkins Essential Oils and the Dieter's Advantage, as well as a number of vitamins and minerals. I should be losing weight, but I'm not. Can someone help?

A good friend called me tonight and recommended this site along with a low-carb diet. We must have been in tune to each other as I just started the Atkins diet on Monday.

After weighing in at an embarrassing weight of 265 lbs. and not fitting in a size 24, I decided I needed help. I have fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, IBS, osteoarthritis in knees, bursitis in hips and veinal insufficiency. I may be facing knee replacement surgery next. After finally realizing that weight gain has contributed to several of my health diagnoses,I have decided that, instead of taking more medications, it is time to get serious about a diet and one I can stay on.

Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • I think I figured out what's going on with me -- Katie, 07:33:25 05/09/02 Thu
I did really well the first week that I was on last month's no cheat challenge (I lost 9 pounds that week). Since then I've bounced up 2 pounds, and then my weight just seems to keep bouncing between 243 and 245. Last week I bounced between 244 and 245 and never could get any lower than that.

This morning I felt "lighter" (does anyone else get this?), and it was weigh day for the No Stopping Us challenge, so I weighed. I was back down to 243 (2 pounds down since yesterday).

I've looked back over my journals, and as near as I can tell, I don't lose at all during the week before, the week of, and the week after TOM. I will however lose a *LOT* during the one week of the month that's left. I think that my body just really, really likes to hang onto water. I'm going to try upping my water intake (I know that I'm not drinking enough) to see if I can force my body to give it up.

Do you all think it's possible that I'm losing all month and just hanging onto so much water that it's disguising my weight loss except for that one week of the month? If so, I may have to rethink about how often I weigh. Maybe only weighing twice a month would be better for me.

I weigh myself daily because I think that it helps to keep me accountable for what I eat. I know that this can backfire on me at times when I know that I've been staying on plan and see my weight staying the same. It's even worse when I know that I've been staying on plan and my weight goes up.

I think that I'll try to figure out when the "low point" is in my cycle and just weigh myself (or only count this day) as my new weight.

Funny thing, I won't give up a new low weight when I achieve it. I still count the 241 that I achieved during my low point last month. I think of the weight that I am now as temporary and the 241 as my "real" weight. I'm hoping to get a number in the 230's this month.

Hi everyone. Great board! I am about 250# and hoping to get to 130. I have some kind of malfunction with my stomach, in that I am physically hungry all the time. Even on low carb 10 minutes after I eat I'm hungry. So I'm learning to just ignore it and suffer all the time. It is really hard.

I started to walk. It's a real challenge. I'm only about 5' tall and at 250 that's a lot of fat to be hauling around. My legs hurt a lot. I can go about a mile and then my legs hurt too bad to go on. And I get out of breath easy too. Maybe I am just a wimp since it takes me 1/2 an hour just to do a mile.

I don't have any kids and I don't work. I want to but finding a job this fat is very scary. I feel like no one would want me. Plus I'm not trained for anything special. I would like to do something where I'm on my feet all day. That will force me to get more exercise. But I don't know what it would be. We do not even have the money to buy a car for me to get to work.

I know it sounds like a sad way to be and to be honest I am not very happy with my life. I am trying to change it. I have to start somewhere. I have been on low carb for about 2 weeks and walking a mile about 3 or 4 times a week. I have lost about 6#.

Thank you for listening. Any advice you can give me would be great. Thanks.

How subjective your feelings can be. This morning I woke up and felt thin. I even saw my reflection in a TV screen at work and thought to myself that I looked thinner today at work. The scale was actually up a little this morning, but I felt thinner.

I started feeling sick at work and so I came home early. Went to the store on the way home and bought some no no food
(my weakness Treasures). Came home and cheated (badly).

Now even though the scale is down from this morning by about two pounds, I feel fat. I guess just knowing what I did to myself causes that.

I'm getting back on track tomorrow. NOT going to turn this isn't a binge week. And the day of "carb up" may actually work to my benefit. Sometimes it does, though I couldn't say why.

Anyway everyone, I'm hoping everyone else is stronger than I was today.

Well one more pound off for me. 238 now. Yesterday the scale was trying to discourage me and go up, today it went down a pound.

Eating breakfast, eating more fat, eating more protein (and unfortunately fewer veggys), eating more calories, but more of them protein and fat calories is working. Too before going to work yesterday morning I went up and down the stairs a few times just to help rev my metabolism just a little. I started yesterday morning with a big 16 oz glass of water and then drank another 16 oz through the day. Not enough I know, but better to at least be trying than to fail completely.

This makes 54 pounds off for me total, and 22 of them since Feb 9th.

Managed to get into ketosis, felt hot during the night like the ketosis was making me burn fat. Woke up felt thinner, but the scale says I'm up two pounds. 230 this morning. I'm not worried, I know ti will go away in a day or two, probably just food or water my body hasn't lost yet, but I'm a little upset that it happened on weigh in day.

Don't especially want to report a gain for the challenge when just yesterday I was down four pounds...

Anyway, I figured out a new way to drink water. I don't drink coffee, so I thought this morning some warm water might encourage my body to evacuate.

Warm water is sort of disgusting so I added some caramel syrup (Torani brand sweetened with Splenda) and it tasted like caramel tea. I wasn't sure if it would be, but it was good.

  • Kids & LC Research -- Laura Richard, 07:49:59 05/08/02 Wed
    Hi Guys!

If you guys are like me, you have probably wondered how important is it that our children follow a LC (or at least a moderate carb) lifestyle. For example, my normal-weighted 5 year old loves sweets (she gets that from her father! Ha!) and I often struggle with how much to limit her sweets intake. On one hand, I want to limit it for her health, on the other hand, I do not want to make too much of an issue about it. So I decided to dig around a bit and look for some research on the matter and I dug up some good stuff. I thought that you parents and grandparents with young children might be interested in it too, so it follows.

This first information just came out of the Experimental Biology meeting in April. At this meeting, researchers from the University of Buffalo presented at study that theorizes that infants and young children who are fed high carbs early in life may be "metabolically programmed" to prefer sugar and carbs throughout their life. The researchers are quoted as saying that this metabolic programming causes *permanent changes* in the body that programs the pancreas to overproduce insulin which later leads to obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes throughout life.

This study really caught my eye because it also theorizes that baby formula that is high in carbs can be part of the problem. It is an interesting theory because many of us who fall in with the 61% of overweight Americans were babies when bottle feeding came in vogue in the 50's, 60's and virtually replaced breast feeding. Could this theory partially explain why there has been such an explosion of insulin resistance, obesity, and T2 diabetes in the last 15-20 years? Interesting.

The presentation of the study was reported by WebMD at http://my.webmd.com/content/article/3606.1504
The official Experimental Biology web site does not have it up yet.

This following research is not new, but it also is about children that might also be of interest to you.

This study is from Yale University & reported in ScienceDaily, 2001: "Yale Study Shows 25 Percent of Obese Children Are At High Risk for Developing Diabetes." This study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine found *stunning* evidence of rising glucose intolerance, type II diabetes, and PCOS in children and adolescents. To read the ScienceDaily report go here:
    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/03/020314080503.htm

This study is from The University of Graz, Austria, 2000: "Insulin Is An Independent Correlate of Homocysteine Levels in Obese Children and Adolescents." In this study reported in the journal Diabetes Care, researchers found that high levels of insulin are strongly connected to high levels of homocysteine in children. Homocysteine is known to be a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. To read the study, go here:

This study is From the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 2001: "Overrestriction of Dietary Fat Intake Before Formal Nutritional Counseling in Children with Hyperlipidemia." These researchers from the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York found that children with high cholesterol consumed significantly more sugar and less fat. Children with normal cholesterol consumed more calories from fat. To read the study, go here:

This last information is from Purdue University News, 1998: "Infants, Toddlers, Should Not Restrict Fat Intake, Experts Say." This article states that there is little information that restricting fat before 2 years of age could be beneficial, but there's plenty of evidence that this could be dangerous (their word!). One of the main reasons they cited is that it may retard growth and development. To read it, go here:

All of these studies are included on my web site along with about 60 other links to other LC research that I have put together in hope of providing LCers with the information they need to educate family, friends, physicians and other health care providers about the benefits of LCing.

  • Frustrated!! -- Melanie, 17:02:50 05/08/02 Wed
Thanks to everyone for the on-going support. I am so glad I found this site. Your a great bunch of people.I have to commend everyone for all of the optimism! I'm maybe too impatient for this! I'm really ugly about it today. This morning I was down 2 more pounds - lower than I went my last short lived effort on this plan! I was thrilled!! Now, about 9 hours later, I'm back up the 2 pounds and I didn't cheat today! I even exercised last night! Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Is this fluctuation in weight normal? Does it mean it's only water and I'm not losing as much as I think??

  • Waist line, the last holdout! -- Daddy Bill, 13:28:50 05/08/02 Wed
    Hi, Gang -

I have a question addressed to the “veterans.”

I have been on the “Protein Power” version of low-carbing since October 2000, and have lost 68 lbs. I have maintained a weight of about 183 (+/-) for over 8 months to date. My height is 5'-9".

I have read many accounts on this board of the phenomena of losing lots of fat from the hands, arms and legs, face, etc., and have done the same. But, though I have lost 12" (48" to 36") from my waist, I would gladly exchange some of the fat from my arms ands legs for that remaining extra fat around my waist. I wonder if any of the veterans have done this and how it was done.

I am almost 70, so I may be “wishing for the Moon.” According to Protein Power, my weight is on the top edge of the ideal weight for my age.

    Any thoughts??

PS: I apologize to you new low-carbers for what must seem to be a question about a trivial problem you wish you had. But know that if you stay with low carbs, you will someday reach your goal. I have dieted all my life on most of the so-called “expert’s” diets. Low Carb is the only one that has ever worked for me. It is really a way of life (WOL), not a diet. It is also a healthy WOL.

    Daddy Bill

  • Good low carb bread -- Chris, 08:51:36 05/02/02 Thu
I've found some low carb bread that taste pretty good. It's just a little chewey and not as sweet as regular bread, but toasted it taste just right! It's called Irene's Health Bakery Low Carb bread, it's 4 carbs per slice. I got it online from Low Carb Connoisseur, and for those of you who really miss bread I would highly recommend it. I plan on having low carb grilled cheese sandwiches for the rest of the week ;-).

  • This is Maggie looking for a little more info. -- Maggie, 08:06:20 05/08/02 Wed
I can't tell you how much I appreciate you all writing to me yesterday and helping me out. I did go out and get a copy of the pocket carb counter and did some other reading last night on it. A question...how many carbs can you usually allow yourself in one day and still see weightloss? I know about the 20 a day to get started, but that seems really low to me on a regular basis.

    Thanks again...Mags
