FIBER WILL RIP UP YOUR COLON! If you eat too much...and by the looks of it, your headed down that road. That's too bad. Just eat leaves and sticks and there's your source of fiber for 24 hours. Have fun!
P.S: Because of doing this so called, "fiber diet", I have a massive hole in my colon...good luck!

I have a problem... -- Drama, 08:33:34 08/18/02 Sun
I have a problem. I haven't been feeling well lately, so I went to the Dr. on Friday, my back had been killing me, and I figured I had a bladder infection. Well sure enough I did, and the Dr. 1st question was had I been drinking alot of water, because my urine was so diluted. Well of course I had been, but anyways he put me on antibiotics and something for the pain, but I still feel yuck.I know that if you drink cranberry juice it helps to fix bladder infections, should I do this? The Dr. said I wasn't in ketosis anymore. Should I start all over again with induction? I also was wondering if all this medicine will hurt my losing? I have lost quite a bit, 16 pounds, but I am scared that if I don't start over it will hurt me in the long run. Have any of you faced this situation before? If so what did you do? Thanks

Being Bad -- Kelcarth, 12:03:15 08/17/02 Sat
I have been on the Atkins diet for approximately 3 weeks now. I went from 159 to 147. My ultimate goal is to reach 140, but I am still happy with 147. I was wondering what would happen if my wife and I eat a pizza tonight. Will our bodies go completely out of Ketosis? If so, would it be best for us to go back on the 20g of carbs per day for 2 weeks?
Thanks for your time :)

So Far it's working!! -- Elizabeth, 06:28:01 08/17/02 Sat
I'm so happy it's actually working for me. I've been doing Schwarzbein , not exactly, but really close and it's been 2 days and I've lost 5 lbs. I don't care if it's water, or whatever, the scale is going down. I'm eating about 50 carbs a day and I feel sooooooo good. I'm so thankful I've found something that my body and me are happy with. I was about to give up. Anyone who's in that place, don't give up, keep looking and trying till you find what works for you.

This is big... -- Octobersan, 21:35:02 08/15/02 Thu
Julia Child was on Larry King tonight....its her 90th birthday today. She spoke up in support of low carb. "The reduction of fat has led us to eat too many carbohydrates and made us fat," she says. We should eat everything, just less!" I'm para-phrasing, but low-carb is getting more major national awareness everyday!

New to Low Carb Need Info and Encouragement! -- Kelly, 15:14:40 08/16/02 Fri
Hello! My name is Kelly and I just started the Atkin's Answer on Monday 8/12/02. My daughters birthday was on 8/11 and I told her that I wanted to live long enough to see her turn at least 80, so I decided to try (scratch that) DO this!
I am 33, 5'4" and weigh 230 lbs. I have been fighting my weigh problem since I was 18, have gone up and down many times. My highest being 250, and my lowest at 135. I am so very determined to do this and I am looking for some input and hope you all can help me.
I thought at first I was going to have a hard time "counting" carbs, but I am finding it very easy. The first two days I was craving a lot of things, and waking up in the morning to hunger pains. I though "OH NO! I will never make it!" Well, I am happy to say, I stuck to it, and have not been craving anything since Thursday and I did not wake up to a growling stomach this morning! Woo-Hoo!
My questions are many, but I will start out basic.
1. What is the average weight loss a month that you have lost in the first three months?
2. Is it best to weigh yourself everyday, everyother, once a week or what?
3. What are the best exercises to do? Is "Curves" (circuit training) enough, or do I need to be more active?
4. Are there any diet sodas that are "safe" to drink that don't contain aspartame?
And Finally,
5. Where can I find a lot of encouraging stories to help me keep focused on my goals?
Thank you for any and all answers!
Good luck to all of you and I hope to keep in touch!
Kelly

Drink your water! -- Michelle, 13:59:00 08/16/02 Fri
I just want to remind anyone who is in Ketosis to drink your water! Since I added a lot of water to my day I am losing much faster! You are supposed to drink 64 oz a day plus an extra 8 oz for ever 25 pounds you want to lose. I drink that, plus more. A good way to know you are drinking enough is that your ketones will be in the pink area, when you are really in the purple. It's important to flush the ketones out your body, so that your body will break down new ones for fuel. In the end you lose more!

Well, I've researced and talked it out and I'm putting the whole family on it Monday. They will think I'm just cooking a little healthier. They won't even notice. My hubby is excited also, he's already sorda doing low carb anyway, so he is happy there won't be the "other" forbidden foods around that the kids usually get to have. So, everyone will be getting healthy and it will be a lot easier to cook one way, good proteins, healthy veggies and small portion of a carb. (15-3x day, and 0-5 2x day).

Metabolism -- Sherry, 18:55:47 08/15/02 Thu
All I can think is my metabolism must be reving up with all the excercise I'm getting. I find that I am uncontrollably hungry an awful lot these days.
I used to go for hours without eating and when I would get hungry it would be rather mild, now it's like "I have to eat NOW."
So I guess this is a good thing.

Walked last night, and it was still so humid a mild walk had me dripping, but not all that tired. Will try again tonight, right now I am at a quarter mile, (but concidering that it is usually NOTHING, I will not complain too loudly) Have a great day!

- Ketosis -- Michelle, 19:06:36 08/15/02 Thu
- Actually,, the darker the color the more ketones in your system I believe. If you can really drink the water thats recommended, that would help to flush the ketones from your system (from your blood, to become a waste product, and out of you when you pee, lol). The key is really the more ketones left in your system,,, they will be the fuel of choice for your body to use in the absence of glucose or glycogen. Hence, drink a lot, flush the ketones out, burn more fat. Keto stix dont have to register really dark purple at all, as long as your in trace your on your way. (NT) -- Nancy, 22:01:47 08/15/02 Thu

Good morning -- Sherry, 09:23:55 08/14/02 Wed
I've decided to go back on induction for 2 more weeks. I didn't quite make it though my last induction that was supposed to run until today. I started cheating a little on Saturday.
Anyway, I had a big whoosh this morning (in the wrong direction) which I don't think I even want to talk about. I'm sure it is water retention. I've been a little dehydrated lately and I must have just eaten right yesterday to gain back a lot of water all at once.
So starting today I'm recommitting myself to at least 2 more weeks of induction faire. I'm continuing my excercise (nearly every day I do something), and I want to see 219 before the end of the month.
Anyone want to join me on a 2 week no cheat challenge?

Any ways I continued the exercise I had started but it isn't enough to make me lose the pounds, so I started a product that is all natural called Quick Slim and have lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks and feel great on it. What I want to know is with the quick weight loss am I in danger of losing muscle mass if I continue the exercise?

Getting thru the fall months -- Kel, 04:49:42 08/14/02 Wed
Getting thru the fall months can be a challenge yes. I can recall one year I did it effortlessly right on up to 2 weeks before Christmas. At that time I had just met J and we were seeing eachother a lot. He lifts and I wanted to look good on his arm, so I was really good throughout the whole Halloween and Thanksgiving thing.
But I also remember one year that I took the entire 3 months off plus some of January. I think for me it really depends on how focused I am. This year, so far I am very focused on my goal and I think I will get there if I stay steadfast in my pursuit.
To answer Sherry's question, my goal is 125 or 120. When I used to be a lot heavier I thought that being in the 130's would be fine, but now that I'm there, I look in the mirror and I still see too much fat. I'm one of those people that carries her fat in her middle, so it really really shows when I have excess.
Anyway, I'm going to try to stay upbeat and continue on my plan as usual.. wishing everyone a happy LC day! Kel

Roll Call! -- Kel, 05:17:56 08/13/02 Tue
Good morning my friends! This is a friendly little roll call to see how many of you are still taking the 3-day challenge series. I'm still in, I'm still in!
I was looking back on my challenge successes this month so far, and out of 12 calendar days, I've only been good 8 of them. That's terrible! I can do better than that! There was only one day where I really went out on a carb-blitz; the other days weren't so bad (they still qualify as cheat days though). The personal problems I've been going through have taken their toll in the quality of food I'm eating, but the amounts have been smaller (most days). I guess that is why all this cheating hasn't affected my weigh-ins much.
Anyway, we still have a little over 2 weeks left in this month, and I still have another 2.5 lbs to lose to make my goal. I can do it; I just need to re-focus my efforts. Since I started my new campaign to lose 4 lbs each month back in June, I've stuck to my plan most days and I've successfully made my goals. I want this to continue. I have big plans to be a much smaller person in a slinky little dress for the holidays.
This coming Monday, I'm adding school to the mix. Ugh, dreaded term paper deadlines and mid-term/final exams always KILL my diet. I'm going to try to practice better self-control this semester. If I have something big coming due, I can't just lock myself in my place and work on only it. I need to get out for an hour a day and walk on the beach or something. I think that might be another thing I can do to help stop the "study-munchies" from getting to me. Anyone else have tips on things to do to de-stress during school?

Hello everyone -- Chati, 04:52:06 08/13/02 Tue
Just thought I would check in and say HI! The scale said 155 this morning but I am not getting excited If it is right then my numbers are 197/155/135. For some reason the scale at my fitness center always reads a pound or two more than my scale at home. Don't know which one to believe. I have really been trying hard. Haven't been able to work out much though because my daughter has been using my car for work. Hers will be ready to go today though so I should be able to get back on track.
I tried the new Diet V-8 Splash and was really surprised. It is really tasty. Nice to be able to have juice again. Does anyone know how bad watermelon is on low carb? I am craving it so bad but am afraid to eat it.
Good luck everyone with your losses. Hope everyone has a great day!

Nearly half the month is gone already and tomorrow is weigh in day. -- Sherry, 19:02:58 08/12/02 Mon
Half a month left of August. What sort of goals do you want to set before the rest of the month goes by? I would like to hit 60 pounds off (one pound to go) and after that I would like to get below 220. 219 sounds better. So that is 4 more pounds. Is it achievable in 2 weeks?
I'm not sure, but I hope so. I actually did aerobics this morning for over 20 minutes (and I hate aerobics).
This month I have been determined to get to a new low. I'm now 2 pounds into a new low, but I am Greedy! 6 pounds into a new low sounds even better.

sugar alcohols -- katarina, 04:21:50 08/12/02 Mon
I recall (I think) reading somewhere that you can subtract the sugar alcohols from the carb count, as the sugar alcohols have no effect on blood sugar. Am I correct or is it just wishful thinking? I know when you look at the count on low carb candy, it states that the carb count is actually lower, as all other carbs (inclduing fiber) have a minimal effect on blood sugar.
I looked at nonfat yogurt, it lists carbs as 22g, but sugar as 16g. So does that mean that the carbs that effect blood sugar equal 6g?
Sometimes this is too confusing!!!!!!!! Thanks

- Read the label vey carefully, it appears that the yogurt contains 16 grams of sugar, not 16 grams of sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols will be listed right on the label as sugar alcohols (NT) -- Joe, 04:30:04 08/12/02 Mon
- I've never read that you could subtract sugar alcohols, but that you can subtract fiber. In the case of plain yogurt I read that it doesn't contain as many carbs as it says because the way they measure food content is to add up the protein and fat and assume what is left is carbs. In the case of yogurt it isn't all carbs, but "culture". -- Sherry, 07:15:30 08/12/02 Mon
- I have read that sugar alcohols do not count in the carbs that affect your blood sugar. In fact, isn't Splenda made from sugar alcohols? I could be wrong on that one -- not sure. Anyway, I have heard some people say that even though they aren't supposed to be affected by sugar alcohols, they are. (NT) -- Kel, 07:45:28 08/12/02 Mon

Still around -- Katie, 08:15:23 08/12/02 Mon
Sherry and Kel - I am so happy and proud for both of you!!! You girls rock!!! Still a couple of weeks left to make your goal for the month, Kel. I'm sure that you'll make it.
I tried upping my carbs to 30-40 a day. After several days, I was having to fight really hard not to cheat. I had tried the Atkins blueberry muffin mix (this stuff is wonderful!!!), but found that just like eating strawberries, the sweet taste just made me want to cheat.
I ate a sugar dessert at lunch yesterday, and had a really bad reaction to the sugar drop after my insulin kicked in. It's becoming more and more apparent that even if I gave up on trying to lose weight, that I can't go back to eating carbs and sugar. I was nauseated, dizzy, my vision was blurry, and for a few minutes I was really afraid that I was going to pass out.
I'm depressed about my impending birthday. This is the first year that I'm really having to deal with the impact of my mom being gone. The first year, I found out that I was pregnant, last year the baby was still really small and new to me, this year nothing is really helping and not having food as a crutch is making it even harder.
This is the week that we normally all go out dancing on Thursday, and I was really looking forward to going out on my birthday. My bestfriend scheduled her vacation for this week, another friend scheduled a surgical procedure for my birthday, another friend remembered a prior commitment (2 weeks after telling me she would be here to celebrate), so none of my friends will be around. I got so depressed last night that I couldn't stop crying and my SO kept telling me that he was doing everything he could to make my birthday happy, so I ended up feeling guilty about not being happy.
I'll post as much as I can here and on the other board, but I'm on a downer right now. But heck, as moody as I am it could change again by lunchtime.

hey everyone. i am on my 6th day and have lost 6 pounds thus far. i am so excited, because i am not hungry at all. i love all the foods i am allowed to eat...although since about the 2nd or 3rd night, i started having these palpatations constantly. it is scarring me, because it feels like i am giving my heart a constant workout! i am 27 years old, and a healthy girl! i've heard low blood sugar can cause these, but i am not sure. if any of you have experienced this, or have any info on why this is happening, please share! i really don't want to stop this program, it works, and i am totally enjoying it. thanks so much!

59 pounds Gone! -- Sherry, 07:45:16 08/12/02 Mon
Today I hit a new low (one that didn't seem to depend on getting on and off the scale just right). 223! That makes 59 pounds total for me. One more pound and I will hit a new decade.
I've been up and down and up and down for so many months that it is hard for me to believe that I'm actually hitting new lows on this. I'm sure the difference is the excercise and muscle I've gained.
I'm happy!

That the scale reads 223 today! (she can get closer to the floor to read it). It was still fluxuating up and down between 223 and 224, so I'm guessing 223.5. The Tanita scale said 222, but I don't listen to it much it tends to lie.

Pentabosol, Too Soon to Judge? -- Daddy Bill, 10:38:08 08/10/02 Sat
Last Monday, 8-5-02, I responded to TonyB, Re: Pentabosol. (Pentabosol is a new “weight-loss” powder, highly touted in an infomercial by Drs. Eades, authors of “Protein Power.”)
At the time I had been using Pentabosol for just over two weeks and had not noticed any real difference in weight or body improvement. I agreed with TonyB. He was disappointed in the results. (He had not taken it very long either.)
Now, it seems I may have been too hasty. After all, most products take a few weeks to take hold and begin showing results. So, I want to set the record straight.
After 8-5-02, my weight began to drop, from 183 to 178 lbs. - 5 lbs. in ten days. (I am comparing this to my normal weight loss, which has been virtually nil, since I have been hovering around 183 since last September.) So, maybe it takes a couple weeks to see results. It did for me.
I am a Realist and a Scientist, so I know other factors may be causing the changes I am experiencing. (One case does not make a proof.) But if the testing claimed by Drs. Eades, is true,(let’s hope so), then the science is there.
Pentabosol is not cheap - running about $80/mo., but it is claimed to be cheaper and may work far better than any other product on the market, with no side effects. (I have noticed none.) It may be just what some of us need to get that boost in weight loss. I will keep you posted on future
results.

Today my scale read 139 (I know I said I wasn't going to look lol) -- Kel, 08:17:17 08/11/02 Sun
Today my scale reads 139. I know I said I wasn't going to look, but I was merely looking to see how much damage I did by cheating. I was very surprised to see I had lost a pound.
I've been having problems in my personal life, as some of you know, and lastnight for some reason I was very ill. Nothing agreed with me and I was up most of the night. So I don't think the 139 will last. I think it's just because there is nothing in my system right now. I have to admit, it's pretty cool to see myself in a new decade though, even if it's short-lived.
Today I have to work, so hopefully I won't have the problems I had lastnight. I have beach patrol and it would be hell to be running to the station every half hour. Anyway, hope everyone has a great LC day today!

It is TOO hot! -- Sherry, 14:51:49 08/10/02 Sat
I've been increasing my excercise, and my kids and I decided to go for a bike ride today. I'm sure we got some excercise, but I'm going to have to learn to be smarter about WHEN we excercise.
It is really really hot out there and I don't handle heat well, but I noticed today that I did better than usual. I'm thinking it may have to do with fat loss. I always felt like all my fat acted as insulation to keep me warmer and prevent my body from cooling efficiently.
Anyway I hit a new low on the scale today (after 10 days of near perfect effort). Scale read 224 today.
We picked blackberries on the trail and I am going to celebrate by making a blackberry cobbler. (I don't care if it isn't low carb food, blackberries are in season such a short time).

Good morning Kel (and everyone else) -- Sherry, 08:48:42 08/10/02 Sat
Kel, I thought your one day off wouldn't affect the scale readings too badly. If you keep it to the one day it often doesn't, and in my case sometimes it even looks better the next day. I can never figure out why this is, but maybe we "break down" and eat just before a whoosh is about to happen anyway and if we didn't do it the whoosh would be greater. Or maybe we eat because that is what our bodies need at that time.
Anyway I didn't break down yesterday although I almost did, and today the scale looks a lot lower. I still feel really puffy and water retentive, so I'm going to wait awhile to see what numbers will show up on the scale after a few more trips to the bathroom, to get rid of some of this water, but it looks like I may have hit a new low today.
Strips still look like they are in the high ketosis range, so maybe in spite of all my discouragement, something good is happening. I didn't work out yesterday. May have had something to do with it.
Anyway here is a web site that explains all the things that most of us experienced dieters already know about how carbohydrates affect our bodies. For those of you who are just starting out though, (and if you haven't read the books) this might be just what you need to understand.

My weight training board keeps sending me to new and more websites for more information, so I will share the best ones here.

Brand new day -- Kel, 08:00:44 08/10/02 Sat
Well after enduring some personal problems for a little over a week, and trying to behave like everything was fine, I fell apart yesterday and ate everything bad. Today I am paying for it with how I feel physically. I think I needed that though. I did nothing but eat and sleep the whole day, but now that that is out of my system, I plan on making it a productive day, back on my plan.
I had to force myself out of bed this morning and make myself eat a healthy breakfast. I had to force myself to get ready to go out and put on make-up. I had to force myself to make a list of things I want to accomplish today. I did all this though, and now I am ready to tackle the day (not sure if I'm strong enough to tackle Walmart yet lol, so that item may have to wait). Other than that, I'm ready to start improving myself. School starts again soon and I'm not going to have near the free time that I have now, so I need to take advantage of these last couple weeks.
Surprisingly, the scale still shows me at a flat 140 pounds. I guess all the cheating I did yesterday hasn't registered yet; I'm sure it will, so I may not weigh again until the Tuesday weigh-in. The scale makes me crazy sometimes -- I find I am happiest when I don't weigh but twice per week. Lately I've been finding myself weighing every morning which is not a good thing at all. Well anyway, enough about me, how are things on everyone else's end?

New to group -- Brita, 21:15:05 08/09/02 Fri
I've been reading the posts for this group for a few weeks and thought I would thank you all for the inspiration and good subjects/advice. I switched to a low-carb diet more than a year ago, sometimes more diligently than others, and am really enjoying the way I feel. I would guess I've lost around 30 lbs. and would like to lose another 30 over the rest of my life. Long ago I threw away my scale (the best thing I ever did - I highly recommend it if you can). The older I get the more sensitive I have become to carbs, sugar in particular. To avoid future health problems and to improve my mood (my husband is shaking his head up and down), I started lo-carbing. What a difference it has made. I just want to encourage those of you new to lo-carbing to stick with it and try not to beat your selves up about cheating or what the scale says from day to day. Same goes for you long time lo-carb fans. Keep up the good work.

Any tips on planning for a diet cheat? -- jaytee, 22:19:04 08/08/02 Thu
Hi everyone
I have something coming up next week and I don't know if I can do anything ahead of time or if I just have to pick up the pieces on the other side.
A darling, elderly Japanese lady is taking me to lunch. I encountered her on my beat last week and I was able to help her out of a big predicament. Out paths crossed again today and she wants to thank me with lunch. I wasn't about to try to explain to this sweet woman (who doesn't speak fluent English) that I'm on this special diet yada, yada.
I'll try to keep carbs to a minimum, but I don't want to offend her by refusing to eat any certain item. Etiquitte is different from culture to culture and I don't want her to think I'm a rude American. I also want to have a nice, pleasant visit with her, without drawing attention to what I am or am not eating.
I've never eaten Japanese food, but I'm sure rice will be involved. How does the body react to carbs after being carb-free for 3 weeks? Will I bloat, gain water, feel blah?

Ok new challenge starts today. For myself I'm going to make this a 2 week no cheat challenge (induction again). Anyone want to join me? I have to get back on track, and induction seems the way to go for me.
I'd like to be back to my June low (225) by the time the two weeks is up. And I'd like to reach a new goal of 220 by the time the month is up. I may be stretching it a bit, that is 8 pounds for the month. On the other hand 2 pounds a week doesn't sound impossible.
So Happy August everyone. Let's GO!

Proud of myself -- Sherry, 18:31:57 08/09/02 Fri
I've been back on induction for 9 days now. Have only lost 1 pound (that stayed off) in that time. I was tempted to cheat today, almost decided to. Went to lunch and ate some chicken that I had leftover from yesterday. Then decided it didn't taste that good so I was going to go get something else, went to the bank, then to my favorite Italian deli and market. This place has so much wonderful tasting food, (both diet legal and illegal). I was going to have an ice cream bar, but decided against it, left the store without buying anything and went back to work.
I figured the ice cream would have been maybe 40 carbs (if I chose carefully) but that still isn't induction food, so I decided to be good.
I guess the thing is, so often I have been really really good and had nothing to show for it and then when I cheat and eat something I really love but that I shouldn't have, sometimes the next day I get a whoosh. I suppose it could be that the whoosh was coming anyway, but the timing of it always makes me think that it was BECAUSE of the cheat, not in spite of it.
But I did commit to two solid weeks of induction food, so I'm going to try and stick to it. I've got five more days to get through. I just wish that sometime soon all this hard work will pay off. I'm sure not seeing much results so far.

can't exercise!! -- Dana, 16:16:13 08/09/02 Fri
Hello, I've been on atkins for 5 days now, had to restart, fell of the wagon when a bunch of freinds came into town. My question is this.... I hurt my foot and have had to stop alot of my normal excercise routine. I don't have very much to lose, 20lbs max. I was diffently a high carb eater, being a veggie it's just what you tend to do, but I've stuck to it and feel pretty good. Will I still be able to lose weight even though I'm not doing rigourous exercise? Thanks Dana

Being extra good -- Sherry, 19:34:52 08/08/02 Thu
I decided when August began that I was going to work really hard this month. I've been strict about low carb for 8 days now. I've been diligent about excercise for 6 days now. (Plan on working out tonight which will make 7 out of the 8).
Scale isn't changing. The guys on my weight lifting board ( http://groups.msn.com/WeightliftingWorkingOut/general.msnw ), told me to throw the thing away.
I'm getting ready to listen to them I think. They said to make sure every workout is HARD to do. They also said that although I've only lost 5 pounds in the last 2 years, that (judging by my measurements) I've probably lost 15 pounds of fat, and gained 10 pounds of muscle.
I'm struggling hard to believe them and keep on trying. My weight loss has slowed to a snail's pace, but if I'm replacing fat with muscle as they indicate, then I guess I can live with that.
So I'm off to the basement to work out for maybe a half hour to an hour. Talk to you all later.

Oldie -- Sherry, 20:44:18 08/06/02 Tue
I've been here on this board probably as long as anyone who is still here (other than Shara), and I've been struggling a long time to lose weight.
I originally lost 50 pounds in about 8 months, but since that time (in November of 2000) it has been the biggest struggle to lose much more. My lowest has been 57 pounds off, currently at 55.
Needless to say this gets discouraging. I wanted to share something with you all though that I find interesting.
I took my measurements when I first lost 50 pounds and then I took them again today. Now keep in mind I've only lost five additional pounds since then.
I've lost:
3.5 inches in my hips
3.625 inches bust
4.75 inches across the navel
3.375 inches around waist
2.625 inches around the area just under my bra
2 inches around the thigh
1.5 inches aroud the calf
.75 inches around the neck
1.625 inches upper arm.
Total? 23.75 inches smaller (in just the areas measured) and 5 pounds.
So if you aren't losing, try not to get discouraged. Some of us don't lose pounds, but we do lose inches. Fat IS melting away, and muscle is being made. There is no other explanation. Hang in there everyone.

Second week of induction and hanging in there -- jaytee, 19:30:13 08/03/02 Sat
Hi all
I've been reading your board for a few days and I have SO MUCH ADMIRATION for you guys. I'm fortunate in that I had less than 10 pounds to lose, but it just wasn't coming off no matter how hard I "tried". I used to have great will power when I was young and could easily nip any weight gain in the bud, but over the past year I gained five pounds and then when I tried to lose it, I slowly gained about 3 more (what the heck happens to our metabolism when we hit 40-something? UGH! ). That probably sounds like a drop in the bucket compared to the weight that some of you are battling. I couldn't seem to break the habit of munching on chocolate or cookies or chips throughout the day at work. Then Atkins hit the news. I had been on the diet briefly a few years ago but didn't really take it seriously. NOW I'm serious. I lost 4 pounds the first week and thought "Great! One more week and I'll be there". Well I stalled for 4 days after those four pounds, then lost one and then gained it back. I'll get there and I have to say this is the EASIEST diet I've ever been on. Never hungry, I don't crave the sweets although I do miss them. Atkins Advantage Bars help a lot. And I miss potatoes and pasta, but not to the point where I'm tempted to cheat. I have the Atkins Baking Mix, but haven't used it yet. Does anyone have any experience with it? What does the resulting bread taste like? I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes I've seen on your site, especially the cream cheese type desserts. Yum. I've been sticking to basics of meat, eggs and cheese and I could use some variety right about now. Keep up the good work and I'll be cheering your progress. Hear that faint sound in the distance? That's me rooting for you!

Did you ever... -- Katie, 07:57:30 08/06/02 Tue
Did you ever eat something without thinking about what you were doing?
A good friend is moving away on Thursday, so 3 of us and my son went out for dinner last night. We went out to a Mexican restaurant that I know has a great taco salad (my friends let me choose the restaurant because of my WOE).
I did great. I didn't eat the chips, I got a diet soda instead of a margarita. Everything was fine until one of my friends told the waitress that it was my birthday and they brought me a chocolate mousse. I ate a teeny bite of the whipped cream, and started giving some to my son. The next time I looked down, it was gone, and I was the one who'd eaten at least 1/2 of it. Thank goodness that the freebie desserts they give you for your birthday are small.
I got lucky this time, and didn't gain any weight. It started me wondering though how many times do I eat something without being aware of it, and is this one of the things that is affecting my losses?

I can't TELL you how good it felt to see the scale solidly on 140 lbs this morning! Finally, some results! This after working out yesterday too... yippee!
NOW, the goal is to get to 137 by the end of the month. It seems more attainable now. Only 3 more pounds and I'm there. I have to keep in mind though, that like Sherry said, procrastinating is easy to do when you don't have that much to lose to meet your monthly goal.
I'll tell ya, keeping my goals to 4lbs each month has been a lot easier than my unrealistic goals that I had before. I'm actually making each and every one of them (with a variance of just 1 pound). I'm so proud! I'm going to be into something slinky by the holidays if I stay on this schedule, I just KNOW it!!

Good morning everyone -- Sherry, 08:40:37 08/05/02 Mon
My weekend went fine, except for twisting my ankle yesterday as I got back from my bike ride.
I've been sticking to induction, and excercising every day. Trying to increase my 'cardio' which I really hate, I much prefer lifting weights. Didn't eat a lot yesterday, although I tried to eat several small meals throughout the day.
The scale this morning was up. Annoying thing. I'll check it again in a little while. Probably just some water that needs releasing.
It annoys me to have hurt myself yesterday. This will make it more difficult to keep on excercising. However I have fallen and hurt my ankles (both of them) before, and I do think this time I hurt it less than I have in the past. Maybe (I'm hoping anyway) that it has to do with more strength due to all the excercise I've been doing. Maybe the muscles, joint, ligaments, whatever are down there are less prone to injury do to being a little stronger.
I was really hoping for a big loss of weight today, this body of mine never does what I want it to do.

The good news is that I was so busy I lost 4 lbs just by not having time to think about food that much. I did try some of the recipes out on Matt's folks and they loved them. The latest thing on the site is our new group called the "First Day Club" or LCFD. We are going to meet tomorrow and a few other nights this week. The main goal is to get you started if you haven't started the LC diet, or motivate you if you haven't been able to stick to the one you are on. We'll meet at least once a week to talk about how we are doing and maybe spawn a few other groups from there. Is anyone interested in a teen group? Amy said that she will be willing to run one when she gets back from the east coast.
I'm going to go sip my coffee and run through the posts. I see a few new people here. Very cool.
Talk soon!

So of course I bought two bottles. Tastes pretty good. Tastes healthier than a lot of thing we eat.

Wow! -- Sherry, 10:50:42 08/03/02 Sat
After only 2 days back on "no cheating" I am at my first goal for the month! My first goal was to get back to my June low weight of 225. Anything after this will be NEW weight lost. This puts me back to 57 pounds lost since starting the diet in March of 2000.
The first 50 came off quickly, but the last 7 has been a struggle. Throughout my 2 plus years on (and off) the diet, I have changed body shape (lost inches) but was really struggling to lose pounds.
Last night I started doing the dreaded aerobics. I really hate them (as much as Kel hates weight lifting, I hate cardio). But I forced myself to keep going for at least 15 minutes. I kept asking my husband how much time had passed; it felt like at least 15 minutes after only the first 5 minutes, so to keep going for 15 was good for me. They say that cardio is good for burning fat and that lifting is good for building muscle which burns more calories and increases your metabolism so that even resting you keep on burning calories.
I've always been more fond of a lower speed, less heart stressing activities, but I guess if I'm going to get serious about losing this weight I need to do both AND the diet.
Anyway that is 3 pounds off for me in just 2 days, so something is working. Now if I can just take off an additional 5 before the end of the month I will make my second goal!

I think i had a good day but not sure, a little insite on my eating would help. Skipped breakfast due to over sleep :)
Though I had a luch at Wendy's, a value meal with water and didn't eat the bun is this alright or should i try to eat something i made myself! Any way dinner was seven slices of american cheese fried in an oven ( crackers) and some ham. I thought this was low carb but i don't know considering there was no serving nutritional facts. Any suggestions!!!!

Hello -- CJ a.k.a. Loco, 14:57:06 08/02/02 Fri
Newbie here. Just thought I would drop in and say "Hi" to everyone. You seem to have a very strong core to your group and I am looking forward to learning a lot from all f you. This is my 8th day on the Adkins Diet and feel really upbeat about it. I do have a question for you. I ate at Hooter's this afternoon and had about 15 wings (Naked-no breading) just hot sauce on them. I have looked a several Nutritional analysis site(including Hooters.com) and cannot find any info concerning this type of fast food. Any idea's? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks,
CJ

my low carb journey -- paul b., 10:56:53 08/03/02 Sat
I just felt the need to put in print my thanks to those on the net who posted their success at low carb living. I've always been a jock type, always could eat anything and not gain weight. Then when I hit mid 30's (now I'm 44) I saw and felt my weight go higher and higher.
I'd look in the mirror and go, hey is that me???
Then I read and read about the Atkins Diet. At first, I was brainwashed that this cannot be healthy, this must be another con job diet.
But I tried it and man I've lost weight , look great, feel great, and 5 people I know are low carbing due to my success, and my success was easy cutting out chips and pizza, well that is my temporal punishment. Anyway, I do encourage my friends to find those who are knowledgeable about the diet, because the support is important.
As you all know more then I, those who don't understand the medical science behind low carbing debunk it immediately, and just close their minds, to the easiest and surest way
to lose weight. In my opinion, noting that not all diets are for everyone, but this one, works for me, Thank God!
All the best,
pb

The new August magazine -- Sherry, 19:05:49 08/02/02 Fri
Muscle and Fitness Hers is out. I bought it last night. There is an article in there which interviews some female competitive body builders. Apparently these girls have two different weights. Their off season weight and their competition weight.
What struck me about the article was that most of these girls don't eat small amounts of food. They all ate at least 1700 to 2300 calories a day. And they all ate "clean" which I assume means healthy meats and vegetables, not a lot of junk. The other more interesting thing that I noticed is that they all recommended eating 6 small meals a day or eating every 2 to 2.5 hours.
Now these are girls who have a lot of muscle to maintain, so they all ate at least 100 grams of protein per day.
It made me stop and think. I know that I don't ever want to be that muscular, but on the other hand, it would be nice to weigh what they do and keep the weight off. I particularly think that more meals per day is something I'm going to try and adopt into my life style. I really believe that is one thing I do wrong, waiting too long between meals.

Okay now it's just comedy -- Kel, 05:25:34 08/02/02 Fri
Well still holding at 142 this morning and no, I don't know why I weighed myself. I was really good again yesterday, no snacking even. Still nothing. Now I KNOW it's gotta to be hormones. I'm sure this will improve in a few days.
Meanwhile, tonight I work with the big-boy cops lol. I should be out with them til about 3am, or later if we make an arrest for duece at the witching hour. At least it gives me something to look at besides these 4 walls. Hope we find something good. Last Friday when I was supposed to work, but didn't, they got into a pursuit. The lead car was the unit that I will be riding in tonight. Missed out on that one I guess. Watch, tonight will be the deadest night of the year lol. Anyway, I'm not phased by the scale this morning for some reason... it's now become total comedy to look at it.

- Sorry Bill, I'm not convinced. Those things don't work this product doesn't offer many different ingredients as any other "miracle pill", not even "carbolicked" or whatever you call it. The chromium is ok, I take it to keep my blood insulin from spiking. Nice try at an un-advertisement ad (the TM's are what clued me in) but I'll stick with a real food diet that I don't have to pay $100 a month for. Thanks for posting, it gave me a chance to tell people about these products so they don't get ripped off. If you want to join the group without promoting the pills you are welcome. Had a burger and cheese, side salad and a piece of chicken with the breading peeled off. Did not wrestle the kids for the fries or mozzerella sticks. Didn't even have ONE!
Hi to the other Lynne out there.

Checking in -- Kate, 04:26:03 04/10/02 Wed
Howdy Guys,
I'm still afloat. Swam 24 laps yesterday and want to squeeze in 27 today before work. Actually I swim sets of three lengths, one each of freestyle, breast and backstroke, so yesterday it was 16 sets and today I'll shoot for 18. I'm still not cheating. Have I mentioned that I find a small wedge of raw green cabbage to be a very satisfying snack? I usually have it with something else, like a few olives or macademia nuts or some cheese. I have one of these snacks with club soda on ice when I get home from swimming and it sure takes the edge off.
Looking forward to a gorgeous lc day for all of us. Oh! almost forgot. Down a pound this morning.

Hi everyone -- Sherry, 18:44:39 08/01/02 Thu
I've been good so far today. Had turkey slices for breakfast, tostada without beans or shell for lunch plus one bottle of water. Had a little cream and Torani syrup for a snack just now.
Tried to workout this morning and didn't get very far. I'm disturbed that my body seems unable to lift the weight I was lifting not that long ago. It worries me. For the longest time I was increasing the weights quite often and getting stronger and stronger. I've gotten to the point where I feel weaker. Getting weight stuck on my chest and unable to summon the strength to lift it off, that sort of thing. It is kinda scary.
I think my lousy diet all through July may have something to do with it. Hormones may be working against me too, I couldn't say for sure, but it is very unusual.
Anyway I have set some new goals for August. I'm aiming for 8 pounds off, (at some point during the month I want to his that low, my body tends to gain back once it hits a new low, so if I'm not there by the end of the month but hit it sooner that is fine).
I'm also aiming for 70 pounds on the free weight bench press. (I'm doing 60 now, only lately I've been pooping out at about 5 reps). I'm aiming for 120 pounds on the pull down. Can do 90 to 100 pounds now.
I'm also aiming to stick to induction for two solid weeks without cheating. It has been too long since I've been that good.
July was an odd month for me. I didn't lose any weight, didn't hit any new lows, didn't really try that hard to accomplish anything new. But I did work out, and in doing so managed to keep from gaining a lot back (in spite of all my cheating). That feels really GOOD to me. Funny how that works. Just knowing that I can eat reasonably normally and still KEEP the weight off is a great feeling. Of course, I would have done better if I had stuck to plan and worked out, but one out of two isn't too bad.
