  • Lost a little -- Sherry, 08:16:23 06/02/02 Sun
Scale is down two pounds from yesterday. 230 again. I had a goal to be back to 230 by yesterday, funny how I'm always a day late...

That is ok, at least it is going in the right direction. Plan to do some more weights today. Protein Power says that human growth hormone is released when we work our muscles to near exhaustion. It also describes human growth hormone as the "fountain of youth". It is what allows teenagers to eat all sorts of junk and never excercise and still not gain weight.

We older people have to stimulate more of it, eating carbs before, during or within an hour after a work out prevents the human growth hormone from doing its job. Eating carbs before going to sleep also prevents it.

Protein Power also says that people who drink a glass of dry wine with their meals lose weight faster. I'm pulling out all the stops this month and going to try everything possible to increase my losing ability. I've been drinking a little wine, I've been excercising. Trying not to eat before sleep, taking my vitamins. The only thing that still is hard for me is eating enough calories for my size, but I keep on trying harder and harder to increase calories.

Need to go grocery shopping today or won't have any protein calories in the house to increase.

Anyway everyone, JUNE is here. Summertime always lifts my spirits (how about you?). We can make this the biggest month ever for becoming smaller. I for one am going to DO it. How about you?

  • Brits Confirm Swedish Carbs & Cancer Research -- Laura Richard, 09:15:46 05/29/02 Wed
    Hello Fellow Low Carbers!

Do you remember the startling news we heard in April that subjecting carb-dense foods to heat creates high amounts of a cancer-causing agent known as acrylamide? This month, the Great Britain Food Standards Agency (FSA) publicly confirmed these findings.

In case you missed the original study in April, here is a brief summary of it. A group of scientist at the University of Stockholm found that high levels of acrylamide is formed when high carb foods are subjected to high temperatures. Since these foods include some of the most popular foods in the world (French fries, potato chips, bread, etc.) the release of this study was met with widespread attention by the media. The study was not published in a medical or nutritional journal because the researchers stated they were so concerned about their findings that they felt obligated to release the results immediately and publish them later. They state in their press release, "....it seems reasonable to conclude that a significant number, perhaps several hundred, of the annual cancer cases in Sweden can be attributed to acrylamide." To read the official statement on the study from the Swedish National Food Administration in its entirety, go here: http://www2.slv.se/engakrylsammanfattning.htm

In a response to the Swedish study, the Great Britain Food Standards Agency performed their own study and reported that they also found high levels of acrylamide in fried and baked foods. In their official press release, they state, "....since acrylamide is classified as a genotoxic carcinogen, the Agency's view is that it should not be present in foods or, if it cannot be removed, that is should only be present in the lowest possible levels." However, they soften their statement later when they also say, "We are not recommending that people change either their diet or cooking methods as a result of these studies." To read the British FSA statement in its entirety, go here: http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/news/pressreleases/acrylamide_study_infood

It seems that international scientist are so concerned about these studies that the World Health Organization plans to review these studies and make recommendations in their meeting in June. Hopefully, they will release a statement immediately after the meeting. I will watch for it and let you know how it turns out!

Both of these studies are included on my web site along with over 60 additional links to LC research that provides you with the information you need to educate your family, friends, physicians and other health care providers about the benefits of LCing. This collection includes prestigious sources such as Harvard University, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford University and major scientific publications such as American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

To access the collection, go to my web site at www.lowcarbsuccess.net and click on the RESEARCH button.

    Happy reading!

  • Good Monday morning -- Sherry, 07:37:11 06/03/02 Mon
Hi all, how was the weekend? Saturday was ok for me, Sunday wasn't everything I wanted it to be diet wise, but I did well with the excercise part. The nice thing about it is I have a brand new day, brand new week to start things off right in.

Today I am going to eat early (I didn't yesterday), eat protein and few carbs (ate a few more carbs yesterday than I wanted to), and make sure to keep my metabolism reved up, by eating more often, drinking more water and excercising.

June IS the month. We can do this.

  • Interesting article.... -- Shara, 11:26:43 06/02/02 Sun
As I was reading the washingtonpost.com today I found an interesting article that talked about weight loss and a group that was studied recently. Part of the article went like this....

    (snip)
    • Eat healthy fats. Successful losers in the Consumer Reports survey reported eating less overall fat than their counterparts. While the survey didn't ask about specific types of fat eaten, the research supporting the consumption of healthy fats was compelling enough to prompt Consumer Reports to recommend eating more of them -- echoing a recommendation by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and the American Heart Association.

In one recent study, Kathy McManus, director of nutrition at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, placed overweight people on a Mediterranean-style diet, with about 35 percent of calories coming from healthy fats in foods such as fish, avocado, nuts, and olive and canola oil. They ate the same number of calories daily as another group of overweight folks who kept total fat at 20 percent of calories. At first, both groups lost weight at about the same rate. By the end of the 18-month study, however, those who ate the lower-fat diet had gained an average of 6.4 pounds, compared with an average nine-pound loss for the group that ate a moderate amount of healthy fats.

    (snip)
Now the article went on to talk about eating a lot of fruit and stuff, but I still liked the way this part sounded. It also said that spending money on programs like weight watchers and jenny craig was not the solution either. If you want to read the article here is the link.

  • 2nd Day feeling sick -- Christen, 16:56:02 06/01/02 Sat
I just started the diet yesterday and I'm not feeling very well. Upset stomach, foggy head, depressed. I may be somewhat lactose intolerant but I don't know for sure. Has anyone else experienced this (not a mild but rather a dramatic shift)? As far the food restrictions go, does anyone have suggestions of what I could eat instead of dairy products that'll still keep my carb intake down? And for the women out there, I suffer from severe period pain which my doctor has told me is related to estrogen levels. I also know that animal proteins and fat increase estrogen levels. I am a little nervous eating this way and anticipating my next period. Does anyone have any experience and advice to share on that topic? Thanks!

  • The Rubber Scale -- Katie, 14:33:07 05/31/02 Fri
Anyone else have a scale that's made out of rubber? You'll easily recognize it if you do, because all your weight does is bounce up and down.

    Saturday 239
    Sunday 237
    Monday 239
    Tuesday 238
    Wednesday 239
    Thursday 238
    Friday 237

What's up with this? This is my second week of re-induction and I haven't cheated. I haven't had any LC snack foods. I've kept my calories and fat intake up, and my carbs have been under 20 each day. I started walking on Tuesday (.25 to .50 mile a day), and I don't think this is enough activity to cause my muscles to retain water.

Maybe it's the "fat cells filling up with water" that some wonderful (thank you, this made so much sense!) person posted to the FLOCERS list.

On the other hand, I tried on my reference "tight" jeans (that I got into for only one day in April) on Sunday, and they were still too tight. Yesterday they were fine, and today they were actually easy to fasten.

Maybe I need to make a concerted effort to find my tape measure. I actually gave up on finding the original one that I had and bought a new one a couple of weeks ago. I've now managed to lose it (still in the package). I swear there are thieving little gremlins in my house.

Oh well. I'm trying really hard to stay focused and not use this as an excuse to cheat. Nothing sounds good to me except Mexican food and cheesecake. I'm fighting a bit of depression (finally figured out the cause this afternoon), and the bouncing scale isn't helping.

I'm doing the CAD/CALP thing of daily weighing and averaging your weight for the week (there will be a weight loss reflected, but that's just because I lost so much last week and started pretty high so last week's average is high). I'm don't want to weigh less often, because I rely on the scale to tell me when I'm doing something wrong (like the 2 diet cokes on Sunday that resulted in a 2 pound water gain).

I'm still trying to find my way in all of this, and figure out what works for me.

  • June is here and here we go! -- Sherry, 06:52:58 06/01/02 Sat
We have a little above ground pool in the back yard, and I think I will celebrate June by filling it today. I plan to spend a lot of time outside this month. Work in the garden, go places, get out there and DO things. Excercise and live a life, not just sit around. Summer is here, time to enjoy it.

June challenge is "Still no stopping us". I'm ready to go. This month I'm going to do everything right. Stick to low carb, excercise, eat enough calories, drink my water. If I can't lose size this month I don't know when I could.

I took all my measurements yesterday, tried on my small jeans (which fit barely), and ate less than 20 grams of carbs, while trying to eat enough calories. Took my vitamins. I plan to hit some major NEW LOWS this month.

Wow! I noticed there are a lot of new people here! For those who remember me, I miss you too, LOL ! Well, restarted induction last Tuesday, after what has been about two months of cheating... I also worked out like crazy but started slowly to get my butt moving... the scale didn't budge much last week and pissed me off, but I am determined, and this morning, went down 3 pds after a week of straineous workouts :D I am so elated even though it is dark and gloomy outside (sigh, sooo much rain!)

My goal for this summer (June specifically): be able to run for 3 miles without stopping & of course lose weight!

*Went to the doctor on wednesday, she was shocked since the last time I saw her..she was like "wow, you lost 15 pds!! good for you!"

    started:031102, 162lbs
    restart:052002, 146lbs
    today: 053102, 141lbs
    GOAL: 120lbs

with hope and determination, I will get through this by the end of this summer... I cut out all junk food ..only meat, fish, veggies/salads, and water...hopefully, I can get down to 128 by near end of June. Sooooo happy :D :D How's everyone else ?

I am almost down to my pre-vacation weight of 181 on May 5. Which means that the vacation, wedding, holiday cost me a month. But leave us not cry over spilt months. Onward and downward, weight-wise.

  • Well I did it. -- Sherry, 19:31:29 05/31/02 Fri
I got my fat butt down to the basement and worked out. I did 4 sets of 8 at 50 pounds (those things where you wrap your knees over and ankles under a pad and lift legs straight out). Did 4 sets of 20 up and downs on the Healthrider (with more than forty pounds of weight on the back).

Did 2 sets of 15 behind the head pull downs (at 50 pounds) and 2 sets of 15 in front of the head pull downs (at 50).

2 sets of 10 hang by your arms and lift your knees up to your chest. 2 sets of 3 at fifty pounds push the bar away from you. and one set of push up over your head weights, (can't remember how many reps) but fifty pounds. and one set of lie on your stomach and lift with your ankles. Not sure of the weight on that one, felt too light though.

Funny when I came back upstairs and looked at the clock I thought I had been excercising for hours. I think it was only about fifteen minutes though... gee how time drags when you are torturing yourself!

Tomorrow I am going to pull weeds and go for a walk and maybe plant some stuff in the garden. No weights tomorrow. Muscle heals and then you stress it again.

Inches lost. I'm planning to spend the month of June and in fact all three months of the summer trying to narrow my body rather than lose pounds. Summer is here, no excuse to not get out and enjoy it and in the process get come excercise and work out and drop inches along the way.

I posted a new database on Flocers for inches lost. If anyone wants to join me in my new focus.

Hi all, just thought I'd give you a progress report for my Friday weigh-in. I'm down to 144-1/2 lbs (I had ballooned up to 146 ack), and it looks like a lot of the bloating I had is gone too. Happy girlie today!

Hey Chris, you asked me to tell you, so I'm telling you. Remember when that woman at work asked, "how can you turn down cake & ice cream?" -- and I answered her with, "because it wasn't devils food". Remember what I said? I said you watch, the next cake at work will be devil's food. Well, yesterday we celebrated that woman's birthday. Guess what? -- Devils Food! I think it's the first devils food cake we've ever had at our dept. too. Most bakeries won't make them because they are more trouble than traditional cakes. Which means someone went to a lot of trouble to see me cheat on my diet. LOL, yes I did have a very thin slice of it -- I just adore devils food cake. Apparently it didn't do too much damage though because I've still lost a good amount over the last couple of days.

Everyone have a great low-carb day & remember, June Challenge starts tomorrow! Lets be ready!

  • rules -- Sherry, 09:38:06 05/28/02 Tue
I talked about this a little on the flocers board, but our level of self satisfaction stems from how closely we follow the "rules" we have set for ourselves. The trick is to not make those rules so hard that there is no way we can meet them. When we don't meet them we become discouraged with ourselves, and want to give up.

Allowing ourselves the rewards (feeling good) of our efforts makes our choices easier to stick to.

So for me my rules for today: Stick to 20 to 50 carbs total for the day (would like to get back in ketosis, so 20 would be better), drink four glasses of water (32 oz) at least, take vitamins, and go up and down the stairs at least 4 times today, plus eat breakfast (and try to keep metabolism reved throughout the day by eating enough).

If I accomplish those thing I will feel I had a successful dieting day.

Make sure that you are viewing a full screen with the chat program. Some people were not able to see the text input area because of this problem.

If you are using Web TV you could have problems with the chat program. If so please email me and I can send you an alternate link to enter the chat rooms.

Hopefully these will be the only problem that we have. If the program acts up, try shutting down your computer and restarting, or opening a fresh browser screen. Sometimes it helps.

  • Thursday Update -- Rebamac, 16:48:38 05/30/02 Thu
Well another day ending. Seems like a lot of post today, wondered where everone was.
Did okay today. More water, but still think i overdid it again on carbs. I have to go to the grocery store and pick up some stuff. I have gotten lazy around the house, and its hard to ride down the road eating a bunless burger with topings. Haven't mastered that one yet. I have stayed away from the low carb bars, which is good. Have been having the shakes for breakfast. Its quick and easy. Don't know how that will affect my weight loss. They are kind of nasty.. I have been trying to doctor them up a bit, but will have to get used to them.
No exercise today. Was on the road, out of the office, tired from that. Decided to come home and work on my #!#*! computer this evening, which was a mistake.
Tomorrow is my day off, am trying to decide what to do with myself. Am tired of spending my day off cleaning house or running errands. Think I am going to do a me day. Was thinking about going to the beach early and walking. Think it would lighten the mood I have been in lately. Will see how I feel in the morning.
Every one have a good night.

  • I love new beginnings -- Sherry, 08:18:01 05/30/02 Thu
June is our chance to really make some new headway. I've been essentially doing Atkins for the entire time I've been low carbing. I still don't think there is a lot of difference between Protein Power and Atkins, but I have been re-reading the PP book and realize that there is an additional emphasis on getting "enough" protein on PP.

I figure on PP I need to eat about 80 grams (at least) of protein a day. I'm not sure if I have been doing that on Atkins. The idea is to make sure you eat enough protein to maintain your lean body mass so that you will lose weight, but not muscle. So I'm going to be aiming for that in the next month.

Another change I'm going to be making is a little one. I started yesterday. When I wake up in the morning before getting out of bed, I have been doing some stretching excercises. Yesterday did some straight leg raises, not a lot, just a few. I figure excercise should start small. Any additional muscle mass you can accumulate will help in weight loss. I really didn't think I was doing much, but this morning the muscles were a little sore, so I guess I accomplished something.

Scale is down a little this morning, I'm ready for June! Let's GO!

I like the sound of optimism and determination on this thread. Me? I AM READY! Vacation, wedding and Memorial Day barbeque behind me -- thirty pounds to lose before Labor Day. Taking it all one day at a time. 20-40 carbs/day, swim 5-6 days/week
and drink 4 liters of club soda a day.
    Cheers all around,

  • I'm officially back on board.... -- MaryM, 13:27:52 05/29/02 Wed
I left this message board about 3 months ago because I was not sticking to LC at all and I felt like a hypocrite giving advice to low-carbers, when I couldn't follow it myself. After 3 months of perpetual cheating, I'm back with a renewed will to lose weight and improve my health. I've always felt best when I was LC'ing, but my addiction to sweets is almost intolerable. I've read Protein Power from cover to cover and I feel like it is probably the best plan for me -- Atkins was a little too restrictive for me as a way of life.

I need to lose 30 lbs. and my goal is to do so by my 30th birthday on August 21. "30 lbs. by 30" -- sounds like a good slogan, huh? It's funny because my eating habits haven't really changed since I was in college (I had a great figure then!) but as I've gotten older, my metabolism has just gone down the drain. I can no longer live on pizza, french fries, beer and desserts, and not gain any weight. And I can't even use kids as an excuse -- I haven't had any yet! It's time for me to get in gear and give LC another try!

  • Back to the drawing board -- Kel, 21:23:28 05/27/02 Mon
Well okay. I was feeling like I wanted something sweet, so I decided I would try some of those cool recipes everyone's been sharing. First I tried the SF jello chocolate pudding, made with cream & water. That was very tasty; it was so tasty, I ate the whole bowl. :(

Then I tried the mock danish thingie. I really liked that one a lot. I ate three of them. :(

Okay back to the drawing board. Apparently I can't just have "some" or "one" of anything yummie. I have to have it ALL or nothing. And I've also decided one thing... I've been making this way too hard. Mentally, I've been telling myself, "it's tough, but I can do it". Well, yannow it doesn't have to be all that tough. You can make it easy in your own head; I'm going to give that a try also.

As far as the exercise goes, I'm starting small. I know myself and I will quit something once I've mastered it and it becomes boring or routine. Nearly all exercise fits in this category for me, so I'm starting with a small amount of activity I can keep to every day.

Finally, I have to say after working part of the holiday weekend in a beach city, there are A LOT of fat women and men out there having a grand ole time, like they didn't even know they were fat. And although it looked like comedy to see some of them in bathing suits (and i dont mean large ones okay), it got me to thinking. Part of my misery with being so overweight is my image of it. My self-image is a huge part of what does me in. See, when I go out on that beach, I don't see the fat people usually. I always see the slim, tanned, pretty people who I "will never look like." This kills my self-image right away and I retreat into my personal hell of "I can't even think about doing fun things until I look better doing them." Soooo I put off a lot of fun things while other people (a lot bigger than myself), are out there doing them and having fun. What's wrong with this picture? Everything. I'm changing my tune immediately. I'm not putting stuff off anymore; I'm getting out there and having fun too. Yeah, I'll look better doing it 20 lbs lighter, but I'm going to have fun doing it now also. Here's to a brighter future and a brand new month.

Well made it thru another day. Think I went a little over in carbs. Nothing bad, just more than 20. Will have to check it out later. Doing pretty good so far. We had mexican for dinner tonight. I had fahita's, pepper's, onions and tomato's with combo of steak-chicken and shrimp. It was wonderful. Had a small salad with guacomoli (probably spelled wrong) and sour cream and a little cheese. The beans looked for wonderful but I wasn't tempted.
This is about the time I start cheating and conning myself about different foods, so I am getting a little nervous. I wont weigh myself yet because it may make me lose my motivation if I have not lost anything or am the same.
Am having a difficult time with the water. Am not getting down as much as I should. Am working on it, will do better tomorrow.
Have been exercising. Did a couple of miles yesterday and about 1.25 today. Am also doing light exercise around the house. I can't feel any difference yet, but it has only been 3 days so that is a little early.
Tomorrow may be difficult. I am working out of the office. I usually grab fast food, so will have to think about what I will eat. Cause I usually just eat in the van on the way back to the office ( a 45 minute drive).
Anyway, I think I am doing okay. Am hungry now, so will go find me a legal snack before bed. Every one have a good day.

  • Doing good for day 2 -- Rebamac, 18:25:50 05/28/02 Tue
Well doing much better today. Still bluesy, but not letting it overtake my life. Had a headache again, but I know its carb withdrawel. I also struggled with temptation, but over came.
I talked myself thru a craving, wanted ice cream. Was really hard. I stayed as busy I could and that seemed to help.
I walked this evening, I think about 2 miles. Am hoping that will get some of the pounds off. I didn't get on the scales this morn, will wait maybe till Friday if I can stand it. But feel a little lighter. Think the bloat is going away.
Well, getting tired so much get off of here.
Have a great evening, and hang in there all. We can do it!!!

  • Had a rough weekend, i hope to bounce back though -- Joe, 12:29:47 05/28/02 Tue
On saturday my wife and i spent our 7th anniversary by spending a night away from our children for the first time in 4 years.

I enjoyed way too many carbs on Saturday and Sunday, mostly in the form of Yuengling Lager and a large portion of watermelon on Sunday.

I was up almost 4 pounds this morning, hopefully that is a lot of water weight from the beer and melon and i will be able to drop it without much effort.

I really need to refocus myself on my core foods and stay away from the marginal carbs. Meat, cheese and eggs. I am looking forward to the June challenge to help me with my commitment.

    Good luck to all

  • I've officially been in the 230's since Saturday. -- Katie, 08:35:50 05/28/02 Tue
I think I'm finally willing to concede that the 250's are a thing of the past . I managed to stick to induction last week and saw an all time low of 237 on Sunday. Had a small bounce up to 239 on Monday, but back to 238 this morning. This is 29 pounds gone since I started in January. Not an overwhelmingly large amount, but it is definately progress.

I wish everyone else great success with the upcoming challenge. I know that with each other's support and our own stick-to-it-iveness that we can do great things.

We went to a seafood restaurtant and I cheated by eating hushpuppies and really got sick from them. Even with my cheating the scale was up only by a pound this morning. I learned my lesson - no more eating the wrong stuff for me. I plan to excerise this week and get back on track. I have not tried any of the supplements and hope to get some this weekend - now that pay day is coming up Friday. Any suggestion of which ones I should try first - money will be limited.

  • Made it thru the Day -- Rebamac, 18:08:19 05/27/02 Mon
Did a 2 mile walk this morn, before it got hot. Did a lot of rearranging in my house. And when I got really bored I cleaned some more. Am trying not to eat, not even legal eats, when I am not hungry. Since I am fighting a mild case of the blues and have almost been tempted to hit the Pity Party circuit today, I dont need to make any type of food my friend.
Stuck strictly low carb, though I can't tell you how many carbs I ate, just know its not many. Found a place in town that makes salads the way I like em. Three kinds of meat, a little cheese, lettuce, tomato and some mild peppers. Was so filling. May have one for lunch tomorrow.
I have been drinking my water, so hopeful I am back on track. Not sleepy, so will do some exercise for a while. Back to work tomorrow. Bet there will be lots to do.
    Be back on Monday.

  • Got tan? -- tara911, 02:48:49 05/25/02 Sat
I just wanted to share something I have experienced in the last few weeks...

If you are capable of taking a tan, that is to say your skin in tanning-friendly, I recommend it during weightloss.

I started going to the salon to prepare a good base tan, in order to prevent a sunburn when I go to Florida next week. It has done wonders for my morale, not to mention creating some interesting comments and reactions from my
    previously-prone-to-indifference significant other...
I have actually started thinking that my body isn't as bad as I thought it was! Me? With a good body image? I think I will have to keep this up even after my Disney trip is over!

Before you try it, please make sure that you can tan without burning, or at least go to a salon with someone there who you can trust to give you the straight facts.
Tanning isn't for everyone, and no matter what anyone tells you, the only SAFE tan comes from a bottle...and even that could give you the results I am enjoying...

Does anyone know if tanning actually promotes/assists weight loss in any way? I thought I had heard something about that at one point, but I can't find the source, now.

    Tara

Sorry all for my lengthy absence. We've been dealing with the death of a co-worker. She died tragically in a fire on the long weekend. Being a school counsellor, that leaves me to not only deal with my own grief but help others deal with theirs as well!!! Anyway, I'm feeling I should get back on the diet track now!!!
I've bought the Protien Power book and plan on getting organized tonight. This morning when I was getting dressed, my 4 year old son asked me how my stomach got big - did I eat too much food!!!!! I resisited the urge to say "from giving birth to you, you little brat"!!!!! and instead cried all the way to work!! Good coping, eh??!!
Anyway, enough whining!! I think the Protien Power plan sounds alittle bit more do-able for me. It seems allittle more forgiving. I need to find a plan I can stick to so I can avoid all these ups & downs. I'll go catch-up on my weigh-ins now!
    Thanks for listening everyone!

  • Happy Memorial Day -- Rebamac, 05:54:32 05/27/02 Mon
Good Morning All. It is a beautiful morning here is in sunny south Georgia. The sun is shining, the day is warm and I got a good nights sleep. What more could a person ask for.
I didn't do to good low carbing yesterday, I am not even getting on the scale. We went to my sisters house and had lunch, nothing was low carb on the menu. So I just ate small portions and vowed to jump on the wagon this morn.
Am trying to plan out my day a little. I don't really have any house cleaning to do this morning, when its just DH and my 3 dog pack members it doesn't get too messy. But my motivation is low for leaving the house and I am fighting myself on that.
Am having a bit of empty nest syndrome, and with that find it hard to cope with having been 'good old mom' for years. Even tho that title hasn't changed, there is no one around the house to mother. I never thought that it would bother me like it does. So I am going to have to do some mental house cleaning and find other outlets for myself to get thru it.
Think I will go walking at the little park up the road. Its a half mile, and I could get some exercise in before it gets too hot today. Maybe find some projects around the house to do. Since the wedding and graduation this month we are financially challenged for a few more weeks. Have really had to cut back in order not to go into major debt over the past few months.
I noticed since cutting back my caffiene intake for the past couple of days I have had major caffiene withdrawels in the form of headaches. Had to take something for the headaches all day. I know it will pass, but its painful.
Today I will have to go thru withdrawel of carbs again since I had some bad ones yesterday. Maybe walking a few miles this morn will help.
Hope you all have a great day.

  • Good Sunday Morning -- Rebamac, 05:07:43 05/26/02 Sun
Good Morning all. I haven't been here in ages. Popped in a couple of months ago, and tried to get back to low carbing but just had to much going on. I am working my way slowly back on to low carb after being in a carb frenzy for so long.
I had so much going on and just could get into the swing of things. My daughter got married the 11th and that was a stressful event. Just getting to the chapel was work. The planning, expense, all of it. Was so glad to get it all behind us. I felt like I couldn't concentrate on anything but the wedding. My son graduated a few days later to add to the stress, so of course that was the next thing that consumed out lives. Well finally made it passed all that and I think I can concentrate on me again.
I started back low carbing yesterday. I weighed 150lbs yesterday morning, and was down 2 this morning. I know any losses the first few days will be water weight, but that is okay. I want the bloat off. I noticed with eating so many carbs I tended to get so gassy, never felt that way low carbing. So here I am back, and hopefully ready for it.
I am going to get back to walking and true exercise, cause I have been really lazy in that too. I have half assed execised, and let myself pretend I really was doing something. Isn't it amazing how we try and fool ourselves?
Anyway, once again I am back. Took my vitamens this morn, getting ready to start chugging my water, and hopefully get the bod moving with some exercise.

  • Hi all -- Sherry, 10:43:04 05/26/02 Sun
Scale is down a little more today, I didn't do anything particularly right yesterday or the day before, so I guess it was just excess water weight that came on for some reason.

I'm still not back down to my low, but 230 looks way better than 235.

I used the Protein Power book to do some calculations the other day. I was a little amazed at the results. He has some calculations you can do to figure out your lean body mass (what your weight would be without any fat), your ideal weight with the right percentage of fat for your sex and age.

What I learned was a little amazing. When I first lost my initial 50 pounds, I took my measurements and marked them on a piece of drywall tape. I took the measurements again yesterday about a year and a half later while weighing EXACTLY the same as I did the day I first took them. What I found was that I was an inch to an inch and a half smaller in all the places I measured (except for around my neck, that didn't change). Hips were about an inch and a half smaller, ab an inch and a quarter, thigh, waist, upper arm, calf, all about an inch smaller.

BUT in addition to that I did the calculations for then and now, and found that although I weighed the same both times, my lean body mass was about 9 pounds heavier than it was before. As though I have gained 9 pounds of muscle and lost an equivalent amount in fat.

Since the goal of low carb is to lose fat, but not muscle this puts my GOAL weight much higher than it was. The previous goal area was between 132 and 145, new goal (with the addition of extra muscle that I don't want to lose) is 144 to 161.

    Kind of amazing.

The thing is I am NOT an excercise fanatic. I try to get some when I think about it, but certainly not enough. So I guess I've been gaining muscle just from eating more protein. Imagine what would happen if I were really working out? Too, what I find fascinating is that by gaining muscle you don't need to lose as much weight. You will look good, at a higher number. It also surprises me that for this year and a half, I have been feeling like I wasn't making any real progress since my weight has stayed pretty much the same. And yet all those inches have been lost, lean body mass has increased. Wow.

Maybe this explains why people who have been stalled, suddenly start losing again. When the muscle to fat ratio changes, your body may need time to stabilize itself. But having done that a point comes when your more active tissue (muscle) needs to use more calories to maintain itself.

It is nice to know that the "goal" weight that I have been aiming for in my head for SO long is way lower than I need to be. For some reason even though it is still a long way off, 161 sounds a lot more obtainable than 130 ever did.

  • Good morning -- Sherry, 08:53:21 05/25/02 Sat
Well today I am a little smaller. Scale (in spite of my negatives yesterday) went down about 2 or 3 pounds.

So I guess it was just water weight. I drank a couple of big glasses of water last night, and took my natural duretic (vitamin B complex), took two of them in fact.

Today feeling much more positive and ready to face the day. I really thought that article on stress related to diet was significant. I know that I gain weight during periods of stress, and it doesn't always seem to have to do with what I am eating particularly. (Of course during stressful times I tend to eat worse than other times).

So now I am wondering if keeping the stress as low as possible within our lives would really make the difference in whether we are able to lose weight or not? I'm thinking maybe. At least MAYBE it will help me lose where I MOST want to lose, around the middle.

They say that people with "type A" personalities (those who stress a lot) and also people with belly fat, are more prone to heart attacks than others. Maybe the two ARE connected.

    Something to think about.

Anyway Here's to a LOW stress day. Here's to NOT being so demanding on ourselves. Let's do the best we can and enjoy the journey.

  • Stress -- Sherry, 08:29:38 05/25/02 Sat
I don't know if this is at all true, but if it is, it might explain why I am able to lose weight other places, but not around the middle.

Read this on Netscape website today.

"Our Fat Bellies Are Caused By
    WHAT?

By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor
Stress. It's bad enough that some of us
feel stress. Now a study from Swedish
    researchers says long-term stress can
make people fat. Stress is a disruption of
the human nervous system, and such
    disruptions can concentrate fat around
the abdomen. Not only does this force
you to buy bigger clothing, but also it can
spell health dangers with increased risks
for diabetes and heart problems. The
study, conducted by researchers at the
university hospital in the Swedish city of
    Gothenburg, examined 50 overweight,
middle-aged men. Blame it on our
stone-age ancestors. It's all their fault that
we get fat when we are stressed. "The
stress system has developed to deal with
periods of brief stress for stone-age man
preparing for battle or flight. But in
today's civilized world, stress is different.
One does not beat up the boss or run
    away from the mortgage institute,"
physician Thomas Ljung, who led the
    study, told Reuters.

Here's what happens: When we're under
stress, our bodies create a surplus of a
    hormone that stimulates a fat-gathering
enzyme. That enzyme is more easily
taken up by our tummies than by any
other parts of our body. If we're under
stress for a long period of time, the
hormone surplus decreases, but the fat
    remains--particularly around the bellies
of middle-aged men. "Positive stress, a
quick rush of adrenaline, is only good for
the body. It is the long-term negative
stress than can lead to serious health
    problems," Ljung told Reuters. And
women can have the same problem, too,
    he warned. "

Well how's that for news? Haven't we all felt the need to eat the WRONG foods particularly when we are under a lot of stress? Makes you think.

I'm down 7 pounds since Monday. I know it's mostly water weight (losing that pms water), but it makes me feel so much better to be back down to my all time low of 241. I already met my mini-goal for this coming Monday, so I lowered it a couple of pounds to keep myself motivated. 239 here I come!!!

How are the rest of you doing? I hope life is being kind to you all. Sorry for being so darned perky, but SO went to the movies with a friend last night and I actually got some sleep. Austin is back to sleeping through the night, and life seems pretty good right now.

hey all... I love seafood salad... however, I have been unable to find a suitable substitution for imitation seafood (the real stuff is too expensive!! to make salad with!) - has anyone had any luck with any imitation seafood that is not high in carbs? all the brands around here have 5-6 grams of carbs per serving... even though most of it is made with pollock or cod, it is bound together with carbohydrates... anyone have any suggestions?

I WORK IN A FAMILY PRACTICE DOCTORS OFFICE AND HAVE HAD SO MANY NOT LOOSE AT FIRST, MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY AREN'T AS FAMILAR WITH ADDING, READING, AND REALIZING CARBS, THAT THEY DONT REALIZE THAT THEY ARE EATING THAT MANY CARBS, SO WE SUGGEST TAKING THE MULTIVITAMIN AND EATING ONLY CARB FREE FOOD, YOU DIET ONLY CONSISTS OF MEATS (CHECK LABELS) CHEESE, BOILED EGGS, EGG SALAD MADE WITH MAYO, JUST FORGET ABOUT TRYING TO ADD UP THE 20 MG PER DAY.... JUST EAT THE THINGS THAT ARE "FREE" FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS. KEEP CHUNKS OF CHEESE, SHAVED MEATS, BOILED EGGS, DEVILED EGGS (MADE WITH MAYO) KEEP THESE CUT UP AND READILY ACCESIBLE, SO YOU WON'T BE TEMPTED. SF JELLO. CRYSTAL LIGHT DRINKS. PICKLES AND OLIVES ARE VERY LOW. WHAT KEEPS THEM ON THE DIET IS THE FAST RESULTS, AND IF YOU JUST EAT FREE FOODS, YOU WILL SEE FAST RESULTS, JUST LEAVE THE CARBS ALONE FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.... HELPS OUR PATIENTS. CLIO

  • Good morning -- Sherry, 08:17:58 05/24/02 Fri
Yesterday I was bad and the scale hasn't budged up or down. I read yesterday that overweight people have fewer "dopamine" receptors in their brains. Dopamine is the natural "feel good" thing that happens when you eat. The indication was that fat people eat more because they are addicted and need more to feel satisfied.

Somehow I thought that explaination was a little flawed. I don't think fat people eat more, but I do thing we eat more of the foods that produce the most "feel good" sensations.

Probably why we all tend to go overboard on carb foods when we do go overboard. I've never seen someone overdose on steak!

Yesterday there was this really disgusting thing on TV. Now normally I don't watch these kind of shows (Jerry Springer), but since I was at work and the big TVs were on all over the room in testing mode, one of the channels came up to his show. There was a really fat girl on there who made no apology of her love of food, and she had a food orgy on the screen. Kinda gross. Shoving food all over her body and in her mouth. Of course they were mostly high carb foods. She described herself as a 'food whore.' Loves sex and loves food and likes to combine the two. Kinda weird. That show is always kinda weird. I've seen it a few times because the guy that used to do my job had it on every day.

Anyway I'm going to start reading Protein Power again, and see if I can find some motivation to get back on track. I tend to get weak late in the month. Hope everyone else is doing better than me.

  • Hello - I'm new......Mini Challenge? -- Kaki, 11:03:09 05/23/02 Thu
Hi everyone. This is the 1st time I've posted on a msg. board so bear with me - your messages are so helpful (with recipes, encouragement, etc.) that I want to post and say thanks. I have been fooling around with lo-carb eating for about a month and I think I need more motivation to be serious and lose the weight. Could someone explain the mini-challenge? I have 30 post-baby lbs to lose (and BTW that's VERY post baby - my son is 4 :o) Anyway, I've recently booked a Carribean cruise for Jan 2003 for weight loss motivation and the fact that my dh and I will have not had 5 days alone together since our son was born. WAHOO! So I need to get to work. Thanks again for taking the time to post. I'm off to eat tuna salad for lunch, but 1st one more question - is water intake THAT important? I'm a diet coke addict and I try to drink water too, but it's tough.

  • Bite the Bullet Time -- Kate, 10:45:30 05/22/02 Wed
    Hi All,
Back from my trip to England with seven added pounds. What else to expect after two weeks in the land of clotted cream? Am totally exhausted and have yet to try on my dress for the wedding Saturday to make sure it still fits. Did have a great time though, my first time in Devon and Cornwall.

Immediately put myself back on induction and hope to get up the energy to swim today, Thursday and Friday. Shopped low carb this morning and filled my fridge and pantry. But after the big event on Saturday, I KNOW this will be a lifestyle change for me. I actually missed being able to low carb and did not enjoy all the sweets and breads and pastries and fruits all that much. That surprised me. (When following low carb became impossible, I got into a "might as well gorge on this chocolate" mood while there.)

So now it is onward and downward -- poundwise, that is. I look forward to your support and offering mine as well.

  • Well I stuck to plan yesterday -- Sherry, 07:03:21 05/22/02 Wed
Was good all day, but it got late and I didn't make or eat dinner, we just snacked a little. Today the scale is higher than it was yesterday.

236 or 237 today. I just love this stuff. (NOT!) It is one thing about the diet and my body that makes me a little nuts.

My mind knows that things will be ok, that if I stick to plan and eat enough food, that the weight will come back off and things will be fine, but emotionally it is always a bit of a shock to be really "good" and be punished for it. (Or at least that is how it feels). I'm sure the volume of food I ate yesterday wasn't near high enough. I'm still having a hard time pushing myself to eat enough calories, skipping dinner was no doubt a mistake. I've had that thought in the back of my mind for so long "I don't need to eat anyway, I could live for months off my fat alone," that it is hard to remember that is the wrong way to look at it.

Doing that sort of thing messes me up in the long run. I guess mentally I know this, but emotionally, my deeply ingrained habits still don't accept the idea that I need to eat MORE in order to lose. It requires something I don't have yet, a change of attitude or belief or something.

Anyway I am up early today, going off for my third and final day of training. After this I guess I may wind up being on my own. I wish my boss was more informative. He doesn't really make a plan and stick to it, now I am thrust into a position that I want, but wasn't anticipating. And I don't know what will be expected of me. I hope I am up to the task.

  • Does anyone else have a problem with discipline after a long cheat? -- Kel, 07:03:16 05/20/02 Mon
Does anyone else have a problem getting re-started after a long cheat (like a week or two)? I've re-started and re-worked my plan, but I'm having a really tough time finding the discipline it takes to stick to it like I did when I was really into it.

It's not so much a matter of weight (well ok, it is), but it's also that I feel so out of control when I'm not disciplined. I've managed to cheat in some little way every single day since I've re-started. Not a lot of cheating or big-way cheating, just little cheats here and there -- oh and the mexican dinner my beau brought me also. How can I find the resolve to get back to plan?? Any suggestions??

Any suggestions on stuff I can have in the fridge or cupboard to grab for breakfast or as a snack any time during the day would be very much appreciated or I think I'll give up soon. HELP! Shelley

hello all! Just thought I would stop by and let you all know whats been going on with me lately, Ill start with last Friday I went to work and about half way through the day,I was doubled over and wisked down to the emergency room (thank god I work in a hospital) my co workers thought I was having a heart attack,I was having trouble breathing a my chest was hurting something fierce, come to find out after my doopler and heart monitor, I have a gallbladder that needs to come out, cause it is "plum full of gallstones" as the doctor put it! and also what was listed was that I have degenerative fatty liver, and something to do with the pancreas, which I will get all this info from the surgeon that will perform my surgery, and I go see him next week. Im truely scared you guys,I was doing really good on this this way of eating, having comments about how I was looking great, and now the doctor said I should lay off those foods that contain fat, till I have that gallbladder out. I looked into the fatty liver thing and I dont clearly understand it too much yet, till I go to the doctor, but as I am understanding it this is caused from being obese/rapid weight loss, diabetes, and hormones(estergen)intake, which I dont take, and dieabetes I do not have, maybe this all explains why I have been having problems trying to have a baby, boy I am just a ball of nerves, and I cant wait to go to the doctor,to see what he thinks, unless there is anyone out there that can relate,I just have to wait till then. This kinda makes me wonder if this is why I have gained so much weight in the last few years, with no explanation,I was recently tested not too long ago,for insulin resistance, diabetes, and the blood work came back fine.Im clueless,I will admit,my biggest worry,is the gallbladder,I was told it full and it was looking like the walls around the gallbladder was thickening.yiks! So I guess for now I just maintain my weight by eating very little of anything??? But I am still drinking lots of water. Thats all I have to share for now.Take care, and goodnight, christy

  • What do you consider cheating? -- Joe, 06:55:20 05/21/02 Tue
Do you consider cheating as going over your carb limit for the day or do you consider it as eating "forbidden" foods.

Personally for me cheating is going over my carb limit for the day. I am a serious chocolate addict, i even tried eating unsweetened chocolate to keep my carbs - DO NOT TRY THIS!!!

Recently i adopted a new technique, i rooted through the kids' leftover easter candy and picked out all the small pieces of chocolate - Dove Eggs, Hershey Kisses and Hershey Nuggets. I have my daily carb limit set in the 20-25 range, if at the end of the day I am below 15 grams i reward myself with ONE piece of candy.

Is this cheating? I am still maintaining or losing weight each day.

I wanted to get some other opinions on whether i am cheating and whether is hould feel guilty about doing this.

  • Water, Water, Water!!! -- Katie, 07:50:30 05/22/02 Wed
I made my goal of 1 gallon of water yesterday for the first time (I've been trying since mid-March). I found a couple of tricks that I thought I'd share.

Try a bigger water bottle. I've been using a 16 ounce bottle and switched to a 32 ounce bottle. I drank the same number of bottles and doubled my intake.

Try a little bit of DaVinci or Torini SF syrup. The fruit flavors (raspberry, cherry, strawberry) all taste like kool-aid. I added just enough for a little sweet taste. A good source for the SF syrups is wholesale grocers.

I found mine in the yellow pages under Grocers-Wholesale. Normal price here is 5.99 and up at the grocery stores, but only 3.29 at the wholesale grocer. This is cheap enough that I can afford to buy 2 bottles and expand the number of flavors that I have.

Find a temperature that you like. Some people like cold water, and for some people warmer water works better.

  • Just an intro... -- tara911, 19:42:00 05/21/02 Tue
Hello! Just thought I would take a second to let you guys know a little about me...some may care, some won't!

I have started the mini-no-cheat-challenge today...
    33/F, long-term relationship, 10 yr old daughter.
I am a 911-dispatcher for two small towns in Illinois.
I assume Kel is in LE after the stolen car detail story...well, I'm not out on the road, and I've got a pretty good "Dispatcher's Butt" going...time to put a stop to that! I used to be pretty athletic in high school, but years of a sedentary lifestyle and a love of rich foods have added more pounds than I like carrying around. Not to mention my "baby pouch" I am both proud to have and ashamed of at the same time! Figure that one out, Freud!

Anyways, looking forward to sharing stories and support. I am taking my daughter to Florida next week and will be offline for awhile. She said she would help me eat right while we are away! Take care all, and talk to you soon...

For all the anniversary wishes. We had a lovely dinner, I wanted steak, because I wanted to stay on track and suggested Sizzler, my husband thought that wasn't fancy enough so we went to Hunter Steakhouse.

Of course immediately they put a loaf of bread in front of us, and clam chowder. (No I didn't resist). I didn't order the baked potatoe with my steak, had brocolli instead, and I didn't drink all my cocktail, so I wasn't entirely bad.

It was a special day, and although I wanted to get back on track today, I felt that for an anniversary dinner, it just seemed right to eat whatever.

Bread doesn't agree with me these days though, so I didn't feel great after eating it, (something I NEED to remember, but always seem to forget).

Anyway Kel and anyone else who wants to join us, tomorrow we start mini challenge of NO cheating until the end of the month. (I know I know I was supposed to start today, but it Was a special night...)

Tomorrow. Tomorrow I am staying on track totally.

Good news too at work. One of the technicians left. Well that isn't the good news, I really liked him and didn't want to see him go, but my boss hired a "new guy" who then didn't show up for work today. Now guess who gets to be the new tech? ME! I'm going to be learning how to repair big screen TVs. How exciting!

    I'm happy.

Work on the website is going slowly. One of the biggest changes is going to be the addition of advertisement. ACK! After careful review we have decided to do away with the Low Carb General Store and place (tasteful) ads on our site. There still will be no advertising on the homepage, but you will see them creep up on the recipe pages etc.. I have put some up on the picture pages. Small ones, but if you object to the ad that is displayed near your pic just let me know, I can always remove it. We will always continue to offer the support group as a free service. Just trying to make up for the bandwidth cost! Instead of a store I was thinking of a Low Carb Product review site. Everyone can vote about how they feel about the products they've tried and of course write reviews, good and bad. You could save another person from spending a lot of money on a substandard product. I think they are showing up more and more. On the good side, the market is catching up with us!

    Have a great day!

I know that I am heading into the best part of the month for my body to be willing to lose weight, so I'm recommitting today. Planning to do my d---dest to hang in there and stay on track today.

IF I can get myself back under control for these next two weeks, I think I can relose this weight and actually reach some new lows. Last week was hard for me because of being low on money and not having the right foods in the house, but this week I don't have that excuse.

TODAY I am challenging myself to get back to no cheating for the rest of the month. Anyone else want to join me?

I'm always searching around the grocery store for low carb stuff, and found something made by Manischewitz in the "Specialty Food" aisle. They are called Mandlen. I remember my grandmother making something called that, but I'm not sure if it was the same. They are small round puffs(slightly smaller than a golf ball) made mostly from egg. They are crunchy and are usually used during passover on soups and such. The good news is that they only have 4g carbs in 9 of them! I had them today on my salad and they were a crunchy treat. I wonder if I could pan fry them with a little butter and garlic and have them come out like croutons? Something to try.

He has been wanting a water garden for some time now. We have looked at pumps, and preformed ponds etc. Never seemed like something we could afford to buy.

Probably still isn't but it is our anniversary on Monday. Eleven years we have managed to stay married. Things seem to be getting better too between us. Anyway my husband has the infuriating habit of always being able to guess what a present is that you have bought him.

This time I stumped him. I think he likes it though. I also bought myself a small submersible pump for an indoor water fountain. I love the way water sounds when it falls over rocks. So I made myself a little fountain. Looks pretty, I put in it little rocks that I found when we went to Fort Ross, pretty greenish rocks that were on the beach, some white ones, orange and reddish ones. Plus some rocks that were more unique, purple and glittery.

It looks nice. Funny how something like that can give so much pleasure.

  • need fast answers -- crissy, 19:38:03 05/18/02 Sat
Hey , can anyone simplify this for me.
I started a low carb diet about 10 days ago and have been reading up on it trying to incorporate various plans into something that would work well for me.
I was a carb addict but only about 15 pounds over weight which had been impossible to shed before now. I haven't weighed myself (no scale) but I know I've already lost a few pounds .
My problem isn't so much going without the carbs as it seem I'm having difficulty finding time to fix salad and other allowable foods in proportions to consider it a meal. I have 4 kids that I cook for and of course I can;t eat any of it so I find myself grabbing a low carb shake (4grams of carbs) and forgetting the meal because I'm out of food prep time or sick of beinghungry and need to put something in my stomach. The other thing is I've accidently eaten things like whole avacodo's(instead of half) and apples or peas that I thought were healthy food , only to read that these weren't. I've pretty much survived on chicken, ham, eggs(omletes with cheese and bacon),unsweetened hot herbal teas, water and leafy green salads(ceasar dressing I wonder if that's allowed)meats, mushrooms, spinach , squash and zuccini. I haven't had breads , pastas of anykind or really anything else but I get almost sick In the evening.
I think I need to eat more carbs but I'm afraid to ruin what I accomplished during the day.
Salads are easy because i can order then for take out and they aren't so expensive as say a steak to go.
I quess I'm wondering if something has low carbs but also contain a few sugar grams am I ruining anything?
Such as , I had a cup of coffee and added vanilla soymilk , about a tablespoon or two. It has about 4 carbs and 3 sugars. Is that considered like blowing a day of dieting???
HELP. Plus I need a good vitamin or a suggestion for what viatims I should take.
Please Help so I can continue this without passing out in the evening.
    Crissy

Any suggestions on how I can honey roast macadamia nuts. I found some in the grocery store - but they had 5 grams of sugar. I didn't know if the sugar would greatly effect my weight lost.

I did some research on stroke. I don't know which type you had, I guess there are at least two types, but I posted what I found below. (After your mention of it).

Anyway check out some of the links. You will need to cut and paste the links into the location window. (control C after highlighting the link and then Control V in the window).

    Anyway have a good day.

  • Day 17 of our Challenge today! -- Sarah, 06:59:44 05/17/02 Fri
    Rise and Shine everyone!

How are we all doing? I am down another 1 lb this morning, reached a mini-goal I set for Monday, just a tad behind but we need these mini-goals to help along the weightloss journey! I think the exercise yesterday helped and drinking my water better these days, although not all of it.

Off to the docs this afternoon to get an interpretation of a Cat-Scan I had last week. I hope it is good news! Getting a bit nervous!

My puppy is recovering after his surgery yesterday, he was neutered poor little fellow. He is resting and eating I guess they know how to heal best themselves.

I'll be back on the board later!

    Sarah
