  • Need some ideas -- Shara, 10:40:01 06/20/02 Thu
I'm working on the July newsletter and have decided to run a contest. The winner will receive a 3 month subscription to the "Cookie of the Month Club" through
    Pleasantville Cookie Company
. (I've recently tried them and thought they were a nice treat) They are made with almond flour and splenda. If you want more information you can click on the link above.

Anyway, my problem is that I'm not sure what to give it away for. I could just have people add their email address and then choose one randomly, or I could have a recipe contest, or something like that. What do you think would be fun?

  • Almost weigh-in day -- Katie, 09:32:14 06/19/02 Wed
I'm a little scared. I haven't been on my scale in almost 2 weeks. This coming Saturday is the end of the no-scale challenge that Kel and I are doing. If it went well, I might see about going for another couple of weeks. I have to admit that not having this number banging around in my head all day has been a relief. On the other hand, how well have I *really* done? I guess we'll find out. In the meantime, would anyone care to join me in a short plea to whatever deity may be interested? "Oh PLEASE, let the number be a smaller one!"

  • Still no UPS... -- Kel, 07:30:48 06/17/02 Mon
Okay so I called Newport News about the cute pants and shorts I ordered as one of my rewards for making a certain weight. Help me you guys, when did I order them? Back in April I think. Anyway shortly after they CASHED my check, they sent me a postcard saying "your items have been placed on special order and we expect to ship them no later than June 13th." I called them, and now they say oh, they are sorry but they are shipping them on June 17th. Am I ever gonna get these things? I really want them, and since they were a reward for getting to a certain weight, I think I should have them dangit. Stupid corporations. (sigh).

Anyway, I made it through my day yesterday. It was a busy one! I walked my big rearend off, lots of contacts; 50 tickets lol. And that's with me being generous and giving some only warnings! People are silly; they act like they've never seen the water before and start behaving like children in a candy store, forgetting about laws and rules. I have to be the bad guy when this happens. Not every contact goes like that though. I had several positive contacts and about half the male population out there was flirting with me yesterday. Must be the uniform lol. Anyway, still no cheating... yayyyyy!

  • Fighting Obesity & the Food Lobby (Article) -- Laura Richard, 08:23:24 06/13/02 Thu
    Hello Guys,

For those of you who believe that the food industry is a huge part of our expanding waistlines, you are going to love this article. A team of two professors -- one from Harvard and one from Yale - wrote a very strongly worded statement taking on the food industry. The title of the article is "Fighting Obesity and the Food Lobby" and it was published in the Washington Post on June 9.

In the statement, these professors compare the food industry with the tobacco industry in that it focuses on influencing children to eat unhealthy, high-profit, nutrition poor products (their words). I got really excited when I read their statement on why they believe that children are growing so unhealthy. They said, "The obesity epidemic has many causes, but deterioration in the diet certainly plays a central role. Fast food is serviced in massive portions, contains highly processed carbohydrate and the worst fats (especially trans fat), and has little or no fiber. Each of these factors has been linked to increased risk for obesity, diabetes or heart disease." Wow.

They also state very clearly that they believe that recommendations issued by government agencies (such as the USDA) and the nutritional organizations have been unduly influenced by the food industry. The examples they cite are fairly shocking, IMHO.

To read their statement at the WashingtonPost.com web site, go here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A15232-2002Jun7.html

I have included this statement on my web site along with over 60 additional links to LC research that provides you with the information you need to educate your family, friends, physicians and other health care providers about the benefits of LCing. This collection includes prestigious sources such as Harvard University, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford University and major scientific publications such as American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

To access the collection, go to my web site at www.lowcarbsuccess.net and click on one of the RESEARCH buttons (same information on each page -- it is sorted differently).

  • Arghh!!! Having a very tough time this week due to Prednisone -- Joe, 12:45:46 06/18/02 Tue
I got a severe case of posion ivy last week. It was so bad i had to call the doctor cause i couldnt handle the itching. He put me on Predisone steriod which has some crappy side effects including increased appetite and irritability.

Well they were right, my appetite has been running wild since saturday, i jsut cant seem to eat enough food and this has ruined my diet. Not to mention i am doubly irritable from a combo of the steroid and too many carbs.

Well two days left on the prescription then hopefully i can get back on track.

Oh yeah, cant sleep due to the medicine either, takes me about 2 hours to get to sleep now rather than the 2 minutes i am used to.

    wish me luck

  • diet+stress=getting sick -- Janelle, 15:29:45 06/18/02 Tue
I have been dieting on and off for three years. Besides the normal stress of work and family, I think that dieting adds a whole new dimension to my stress level! Anyway, while I have been dieting I have noticed that I tend to get sick more often. My doctor attributes this to dieting and stress...(no kidding). He recommended tradition supplements like Vitamin C and Echinacea but they did not help me at all. But a couple of months ago I saw someone recommend Immunolin on a message board so I decided to give it a shot...and I think that it is really helping. I guess Immunolin is really effective as an immune supplement for dieters. Has anyone else here tried this? I got it on the web at swansonvitamins.com although I think that Safeway stores have it too.
    Let me know,
    Janelle

  • Good morning -- Sherry, 08:56:15 06/18/02 Tue
The scale is being honery again. I'm telling it "thanks for your input, but I'm doing better than that".

My body is changing shape, I can feel it. Weight training is helping me redefine and adjust my fat levels. The three day no cheat isn't hurting either. (ok 7 day).

I didn't eat enough food yesterday though. I had only one meal, and it was wonderful. Steak and green beans (fresh) and salad and sauteed mushrooms and a glass of wine.

I really need to pay more attention to eating earlier and more often. I get so involved at work that I don't go to lunch often times. Got to stop doing that.

Anyway have a great low carb, no cheating day everyone.

  • Today -- Sherry, 00:46:01 06/17/02 Mon
Well we went and had Mexican food for a late lunch, I had a chicken tostada with no beans or rice, didn't eat the tortilla. Had a few chips with salsa, but not many.

For dinner we ate spinach salad with tomato, bacon, salmon, cheese, and balsamic vinegar. Not enough water, but some.

We took the kids to the park today and practiced pitching the ball to them and allowing them to try and bat it. My daughter showed some improvement after trying awhile. My son was already pretty good.

Didn't work out (exactly) today, but I bought an excercise ball, some gloves for weight lifting and a dumbell bar for adding weights to. Spent a little time using the ball after getting home. It was good for stretching the muscles in my lower back that were hurting.

Scale was up this morning which annoyed me, but didn't get to me too badly. I may be entering my "heavier" portion of the month. It always seems like I have a section of the month (about two weeks) where I can lose weight, and then a section when I can't. When it seems determined to come back on regardless of what sort of effort I make to take more pounds off.

I'm not going to assume that just yet though. Going to keep on pushing myself and see if I can't make June the big loss month. I'm thinking I may have sabotaged myself somewhat by eating too few calories. One day of eating semi-normally put me that much higher, well that may or may not be the reason. Whatever.

This body is going to do whatever it wants to do, and I may not have any say about it, but I am NOT going to give up without a solid fight to drop additional weight.

Working out is helping. I just need to develop some new routines to maximize the benefits. I think I am on track to do that now.

  • Feel like myself today... So who was I last week??? -- Katie, 11:18:28 06/17/02 Mon
I'm feeling like myself again. Okay, so maybe my usual self is a little too perky, but it's good to be back!

How's everyone doing? Kel, no peeking at that scale! Sherry, great job with the weights! Shara, I love the e-cards. I sent one to my SO. Piera, Cynthia, and Julie Anne, it was great to see your posts. Welcome aboard. Keep posting! I need something to do when I'm board, and reading/answering posts helps tremendously.

Here's an off-topic question for all of you parents out there... How do you deal with a biting toddler? Austin only bites me, and he does it EVERY time that I tell him not to do something. If I take his hand to take him back into the house, he bites my hand. If I start to pick up his toys, he bites my hand. If I pick him up to carry him to bed or into the house, he bites my shoulder. My SO has started calling me "chew toy". I appreciate the humor, but I'm really tired of being bitten. Any suggestions? I'm hoping someone here will have an idea. All of my friends have teenage and adult children (that's what happens when you have your first kid at the age of 37 1/2!)

We planned a CALP meal for last night (I don't count that as a cheat, since I've been intentionally upping my carbs), and it was pretty good. We both worked very hard all weekend on house and yardwork, and I think the extra motion is paying off. My thighs are starting to look thinner.

I found my benchmark jeans in the spare bedroom last night, and couldn't resist trying them on. I haven't worn them in two years, and could only fit into them for 1 day then. I can actually fasten them. Of course, I DID have to lie down on the bed to do it, and walking is a little difficult, sitting is impossible, BUT I got them on. Finally I feel like I really am making progress. I CAN DO THIS!!!

They had a woman on there who was getting up there in years who had started training with weights. They talked about women who had done this for a year and how much muscle they and built (replacing fat) and how much their bone density increased.

I have eaten low carb for a week now. First three days only ate three times a day and watched fat fall off.
Got ketone sticks and tested up at the highest end of scale but felt a bit yuk the third day.
The last four days I have eaten when I am hungry and until I am satisfied which is usually four times a day .
I have had one or two teaspoons of sugar per day in the morning and dont seem to have lost any more
but am still at the moderate range on the ketone sticks. Am I doing this wrong.? should I only eat 3
times a day. I have been eating only steak, chicken, eggs, cheese and nuts and the odd capsicum.
Lunch today was a camembert cheese and a capsicum. Should I never have any sugar at all.?
I also have cream in my coffee and no milk. Seems weird I only looked thinner the first three days.

I don't know what I weigh because I'm boycotting my scale along with Katie until Jan 22nd. I FEEL thinner though! Tomorrow I have beach patrol, so there will be a great opportunity for some exercise (lots of walking and some running).

Has anyone who is/was a caffeine addict tried to give up caffeine? What withdrawel symptoms can I expect and how long do they last before I start feeling better? I'd really like to give up caffeine, but I've heard about headaches, etc. that are a big problem.

Also, once you've gotten rid of the side effects of withdrawel, can you occasionally have a diet soda with caffeine in it if there is nothing else available? Or does that just throw you back into the addiction? Any advice from someone who knows is welcome... thanks!

    HI Board,

i really like this site, it seems very inviting and a great place to connect and learn about this great way of eating.

i started atkins 2 days ago and i am a little confused with the book. I finished it last night and i found it contradicted it itself. It first said that we were allowed to eat liberal amounts of fat and protein. Not to be afraid of consuming any fats. Then in another section it said that we shouldn't over consume fat and only to eat enough protein to feel satisfied. Well what should i do? Should i eat mayo, oil and butter with caution... and not every day?? I have been eating till i am comfortably satisfied. I don't have alot to lose about 15 pounds. I also am not used to eating three large meals...i prefer 5 smaller meals can I do this on atkins??

Also i enjoy working out with weights and cardio amchines, WILL i still have enough energy to do my weight work outs?? Its day 3 for me today and I still feel SO TIRED AND BLAH BLAH BLAH. I had severe headaches for the first two days, and just feel listless...is this normal?? thanks for your help and time ..good low carbing to all!:)

I'm down to 226 today. I'm hoping for a nice 225 tomorrow or the next day. Working out, every other day. Bought a new set of weights last night. And a bar for lifting them with. I only went to get a bar, but the guy wound up selling me a hundred pounds worth of weights too. Now I need to get one of those excercise balls.

Maybe later today I will go to Target and see if they have one.

Right now I am heading to the basement to try out my new equipment.

Well the scale is lower again today. Second day not cheating. I got really hungry last night, had to go to the store before I could eat. But the meal was wonderful. There is something about eating when you are really hungry that makes the food taste simply wonderful. We had steak, fresh green beans and spinach salad with tomatoe and bacon and balsamic vinegar. Plus a had a glass or two of some Pinot Griego (sp?) wine. Really nice.

Tomorrow is weigh in day, I'm hoping the scale will continue to treat me well.

Today is pay day, I'm going to spend some money on weight training equipment, so I can do some new excercises. I really believe that the weights I have been lifting are making the difference. (that and not cheating).

Sigh, I'm taking 3 summer courses and manage to squeeze in workout time ... its just so frustrating that the scale is not moving at all! So I thought I should increase my workouts from 1 hour to 2 1/2. It worked but only lost 3 2 pds. I do think it is hard to stuff my face with so much food but considered that maybe low calorie intake is the problem. Sigh. Soooo frustrated. Wish it was like the first time I had induction where I lost 17 pounds the first week and 1/2 :( Well, double my water intake from 4 POland Spring bottle to 8 and brought in more food to work (salad and 3 pieces of big pork chops). Was just munching on one of the pork chop and feel good and bad .. good cuz not hungry no more, bad b/c I feel like I'm eating tooo much :(
Someone please tell me this is going to work for me !!! :( I feel so unmotivated and discouraged!

So, I still haven't cheated!! I'm completely surprised at myself, but I'm just going with it. I'm down 5 lbs since I started and am really excited about it.

At the end of the summer I am moving to San Antonio. I live in the DC area and decided to change careers and move to live near my family. I lived in TX for 16 years, went to college in CT, stayed there a couple of years and came to DC 5 years ago for a job. DC is the hardest place to meet people! So, I'm trying to get alternative certification for teaching so that I can actually teach while I'm getting my actual certification. The move is coming up and I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I haven't lived near my family for 14 years and am hoping they'll surprise be and be a fantastic support group. But, I'm realizing that if I move and don't make friends right away, I'm no worse off than I am here. I have several friends, but never really see them.

So, I'm busy finishing my time at work, packing (trying to get the things I don't need packed way ahead of time), and trying to drop a few lbs. So far everything is on track. I'm getting a little anxious, but it's a good kind of anxiety. Looking forward to a change of pace!

Hope everyone is well and has a great day!!

  • Mid June -- Sherry, 19:25:16 06/13/02 Thu
Hard to believe that almost half of June is gone already. Today was the last day of school for my kids, so for them summer is just starting.

I was looking at my weights at the beginning of the last two challenges. At the beginning of April I was at 238, at the beginning of May 232. At the beginning of June in spite of ups and downs during May, still 232. Right now I'm at 228, so that is 10 pounds off in 2.5 months.

But then looking at it another way I was down to 232 during the first week of April, so it is really only 4 pounds off in 2 months and one week.

Slow losses. But at least I'm looking at losses rather than gains. I've been good today, though not enough food again. Too involved with work to go to lunch today. Nothing really legal in the house to eat. (That is one thing about a high protein diet, it is hard to keep protein fresh and available). I'm hungry, but probably won't eat for awhile. The boss brought "pastries" for anyone who wanted them. I of course didn't.

Need to lose at least three more pounds this month. Wish I had a magic wand...

Well I guess I started the no cheat a day early (partly because I wasn't paying attention and had already made up my mind to do it before I realized it was supposed to start today).

Anyway, I lost a pound. 228 today. I worked out this morning, haven't eaten breakfast today yet, but intend to.

I really really really want June to be the month that I finally start making some NEW progress. I'm so tired of that scale doing all it can to bounce back up to 232. This month I'm determined to win out over it and drop my set point to a new low. Or even better get rid of set points and just keep on losing... Hey wouldn't that be wonderful?

My muscles feel so good from the work out I did. I just need to find some new ways to use them. Some of the ones I'm not currently working I mean.

Anyone know of a good weight lifting excercise for hips, thighs or stomach?

Thanks for the responses. It helps to know that I have someplace to vent. I managed to stay on plan with the exception of the donut, and according to fitday I didn't blow it other than my personal problem with sugar and flour.

I woke up feeling more positive today. I got a nap in after work, and went grocery shopping with a friend last night, how fun is that!We try to go together once or twice a week because we figure if we have to spend a couple of hours someplace as boring as the grocery store that we might as well have company.

  • AHA Getting Closer but Still Confused (Research) -- Laura Richard, 09:47:50 06/11/02 Tue
    Hi Guys!

I thought you guys might be interested in some news from the American Heart Association (AHA) that shows that it is started to dawn on them that low-fat dieting does not work. In a way, it would be humorous, if it were not so serious to the health of millions of people.

The AHA released a "Scientific Statement" in the June 11 issue of the Journal Circulation (AHA's official publication). In it, they report on their reviews of several studies about the potential affects of using fat substitutes in achieving the AHA's guidelines for fat intake. They report:

    1) That while the proportion of calories of fat in the US is decreasing, obesity continues to climb (we knew that, of course, but I think they are admitting it for the first time?);
    2) That Americans are responding to the AHA's past recommendations to eat a low fat diet in that 90% of Americans are eating low-fat and reduced-fat foods;
    3) That adults who use fat-reduced foods had a lower intake of fat and were more likely to meet the AHA's fat consumption guidelines;
    4) That the availability of low-fat foods in the 90's has shifted our intake to higher sugar consumption;
    5) That portion control and physical activity have a greater impact on weight than does the use of fat-reduced products;
    6) Substitution of low-fat for full-fat products may (their word) not be effective in lowering body weight;
    7) They conclude that people who eat low-fat products are more likely to fit the AHA's nutritional profile, but they *do not say that they are more likely to be normal-weighted or to lose weight.*

Now here is the part that would be funny if it were not so sad: The lead researcher, Dr. Judith Wylie-Rosett, is quoted by Reuters as saying, "It is a paradox that requires explanation.... One can only guess that the total number of calories in food has increased as food as become lower in fat." CNN quotes her as saying, "The food industry has tried to respond with what they thought was a good message in terms of heart disease and the message is more complicated than they realized."

Isn't is astounding how blind someone can be when she/he is so ingrained in only one way of thinking? Amazing.

If you would like to read the full text of the statement from the AHA in the journal Circulation, go here:http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/105/23/2800

If you would like to read the story as reported by Reuters Health on Yahoo! go here:

If you would like to read the story as reported by CNN, go here:

  • I think I need help... -- Paula, 07:27:55 06/10/02 Mon
I have been doing this WOE for a month now & had lost 6 lbs, but last Friday (only weigh on Fridays) I gained one back. I have NOT cheated at all & I've been staying on induction (less than 20 carbs--a couple of days I did go up to 23 though). Is it possible to not lose on this diet even though I'm doing things right? I have read all of the Atkins book & am following it as it suggests. I have also taken my measurements & have lost 4" total in the last month. Can I lose inches & not weight? Will the weight eventually come off? I'm not planning on stopping this WOE because I feel so much better & have more energy than ever before. I just want some reassurance I guess. Thanks!

  • Stressed to my outer limits -- Katie, 10:54:53 06/12/02 Wed
I'm not having a good week. I've been able to keep my food intake where it should (up until this morning), but emotionally I'm a wreck.

I decided that this was "no crap week", as in I'm not taking any crap from my SO's stepson. Its getting very hot here, my baby is getting some molars and has been up several times each night, he also has a stuffy nose, and is a little cranky. We've started taking care of the yardwork around our house, so on top of all the dishes, laundry, internet auctions, babycare, full-time job, household bookkeeper, ad nauseum, I now have to make time to water the lawn and all of the flower beds every other day.

We have a really nice patio area that is completely fenced off, and has a "lawn area" next to it. The lawn there is completely weeds, so I told the boy to dig it all up and rake away all of the debris. 15 minutes later, he's in his room on the phone, 15 minutes after that, he's outside smoking a cigarette. When I asked him why he wasn't doing the chore I gave him, he told me that he was on a break. I told him that you don't get a break after only working 15 minutes, and he got angry at me, and broke the rake.

Fortunately my SO was home by then, so he dealt with the attitude. I went back in the house to finish cooking dinner. My SO comes back in the house after about an hour and tells me that the yard will be finished before boy will be allowed to come back in the house. Apparently, they had quite a discussion during which boy told my SO that he's worthless. My SO has raised this boy since he was 6 years old, working as a police officer for 15 years, going to school nights so that he could get promotions, so that his ex could be a stay-at-home mom, and after all these years, the boy tells him that he's worthless. I still feel like crying every time I think about it.

This morning, I woke up 1/2 an hour before my alarm went off, and discovered that my mom's wedding rings weren't on my finger. I freaked and woke up my SO. This must be true love. The poor man was going through all of the trash piece by piece at 5:30 a.m. to try to find my mom's rings. I finally got him to go back to bed at 6:00 a.m. and went to take a shower. I was getting dressed, and found the rings under my shoe next to the bed.

The donut witch came again this morning, and after all this, I just couldn't find it in myself to stay away. I did make myself walk 1/2 a mile at break, and I'm going to stay LC for the rest of the day. I've been trying to up my carbs to the 50 range (yesterday I had 70, and 35 fiber for a total ECC of 35), so maybe this will be okay.

I just don't know how much more stress I can handle right now. I've been missing my mom so badly since the end of April. I cry almost every day. My baby is sleeping 13 hours a night, so he goes to bed as soon as I pick him up from daycare and the only time that I get with him is 1/2 an hour in the morning (dressing him, and the drive to daycare) and 1/2 an hour at night (drive home, and changing him). I wish that I had some vacation time coming so that I could take a couple of extra days off.

I think I will start today. I'll make it a four day and join you all. For me I'm going to make my "no cheat" also include eating enough, drinking my water and excercising two of the the four days, as well as eating under 20 grams of carb per day.

I weighed 229 this morning, lets see if I can get it down to 227 by the end of this four day session. Good luck everyone.

  • Reasonable Goals -- Kel, 06:25:40 06/11/02 Tue
I've been doing some self-analysis lately concerning why I often don't succeed on staying on my plan for any significant period of time. I think one of the things that hinders my determination is that I feel pressured to meet unrealistic goals. For example.. Starting in April I began the 'big push' to try and slim down for summer, knowing that finals were approaching and aware that I probably wouldn't lose in the month of May because of this. But still I wanted to be skinny-minny for summertime & I expected this of myself. Well summer is here and I've started and stopped the diet so many times I've lost count. Several times I've caught myself thinking "well you're never gonna lose that much by the deadline of summer so might as well cheat today if you really want to."

It seems like I always start trying to get into that swimsuit in March or April and that's pretty unrealistic at my weight because I only lose like 1-2 lbs per week. By June I'm always disappointed. That only gave me 2 months really (because May I was expecting to not lose), to lose 20 lbs. Unrealistic!

Okay so NOWWW I've re-evaluated my goals. My new objective is to be into something slinky for all the Christmas and New Years parties. That gives me approximately 6 months to lose 20 lbs. I think I should be able to handle that! Even with the Thanksgiving holiday in there and the occassional cheat once in awhile, at 4 lbs per month, that would be like 24 lbs lost. That seems more do-able to me.

Anyone else disappointed that they didn't get to where they wanted to be by summer? Anyone else want to join me in my holiday quest? I think I'm going to continue our challenges, but I'm considering different angles and methods that we can use to pump some new motivation into our current system. Does anyone have any suggestions of their own on this? Nancy? Shara? Katie? Sherry - Anyone? Bueller? LOL.. I've included my email in this post so that folks can email me if they don't want to post their ideas. Lets put our motivation back in force. Lets put our heads together and see if we can come up with something new to do (or a new way of approaching an old method that we like & share). All suggestions for themes and gimmicks are welcome =)

  • Ginseng Berry for Obesity & Diabetes? (Research) -- Laura Richard, 08:43:27 06/06/02 Thu
    Hi Fellow Low Carbers!

I ran across this study from ScienceDaily.com and the journal Diabetes that really captured my attention so I thought you guys might be interested in it too. This study, from the University of Chicago, evaluated the effects of a compound found in the berry of the Panax Ginseng plant (not the root). While the study was performed on rats and has not been duplicated in people yet, the results are pretty impressive.

When the researchers injected obese diabetic mice with the Ginseng berry derivative (known as Ginsenoside Re) for 12 days, the rats blood glucose levels normalized, their glucose intolerance improved by 46%, their insulin levels fell, their food intake fell by 15%, their activity increased by 35%, their body temperature rose, and they lost a significant amount of weight. In fact, they lost 10% of their body weight in 12 days (while the control group mice gained weight). When the injections were stopped, the mice regained the weight. On top of that, their cholesterol levels dropped by 30%. Wow.

ScienceDaily.com quotes the lead researcher as saying, “We were stunned by how different the berry is from the root and by how effective it is in correcting the multiple metabolic abnormalities associated with diabetes.” The reports do not say if the results would be comparable with ingestion of the berry. Hopefully, this early study will pan out for humans and not just be another great way for rats to be healthier! The researchers have applied for a patent to develop the extract into a diabetes and/or obesity medication.

I didn't work out yesterday, but I plan to go do that now, before work. I like the way my body feels when those muscles are struggling to pull that weight down. It hurts, but it is a good hurt. The kind that creates strength, muscle and new weight losses.

I'm still not planning to bother my head this month with whether the scale moves or not. Right now I want to focus on the process not the results.

Boy am I getting brave! I look like a pregnant beached whale in it, but oh well. At least I have something to go into the back yard pool in. I doubt if anyone in public will ever see me in this unless I start looking better.

"Ya Ya" was a great movie. (A woman's movie though I don't think guys would particularly like it). I laughed and cried and enjoyed it all.

I don't know what it is, but something is making me feel WONDERFUL lately. I think it is summer. There is such a FREEDOM feel to summer that I love. I feel stronger like I could move the world if necessary. Weird.

Hi Everyone, I cheated big time this weekend. I would usually cheat just a little - a hush puppies or taste something off of the boys plate while doing dishes. I went to a cookout - the bannana pudding was wonderful and it was no stopping. I had seconds and later had popcorn and cookies. One of the guys I work with said he usually give himself a cheat day once a week. The "cheat day" would help with him being stall. I can now agree with him, before my "cheat day" the scales was bouncing. It was down 2 pounds this morning. I feel more motativate. I went back to induction on Sunday. My goal for the month of June was to lost 5 pounds - It just may happen now! Before the cheat I was very down on myself - too fat, need to do something with my hair, etc. Still have the hair issues, but I now can see the light at the end of the tunnel aleast for June!!

  • Happy Monday. -- Sherry, 21:11:25 06/10/02 Mon
Well today a new guy started at work, he is supposed to help me learn a little. He's been doing TV work for some time now is retired, but hasn't ever really done big screen TVs before.

I'm sure he knows more than I do, but I was pleased that the one I had already diagnosed, he concurred with me as to what was wrong with it. I guess that indicates I am not entirely incompetent.

Found some paper work that helped me do a convergence on a TV that one of our customers has been complaining about. Because of the change with the other guy leaving and me taking over but not knowing much we have been behind some. Well this one guy was unhappy because we hadn't done his TV some time back. I called him and told him I needed his remote in order to fix his TV, well he didn't bring it in until Thursday late (last week), but was wanting to complain anyway. Anyway I was glad to find the paperwork and get it done, only problem was I couldn't get it out of the service menu after I had it working. The day ended and I will need to deal with it tomorrow, but at least it is done otherwise.

I didn't work out today. I still want to, but it is late and I just don't feel like it tonight, too hot.

We had a solar eclipse today. I came home to find my husband standing in the front yard with the telescope aimed at the sun, and holding a piece of paper above the eyepiece watching the shadow of the moon cross the sun.

It was a weird sort of light with the sun mostly gone. Almost like a cloudy day, only no clouds.

Tomorrow is weigh in. I hope I haven't gained. Haven't been completely on track lately, but haven't been terribly far off (except for on Saturday). How is everyone doing?

  • Sorry for all my whining yesterday -- Sherry, 08:55:23 06/07/02 Fri
I lost another pound this morning. Down to 229. Continuing my weight lifting. This morning some of my weights seemed to light, had to increase the reps to 30 on one of them before it hurt, so I guess tomorrow I will either do two sets of 30 or will increase the weight to 60 pounds.

I didn't work out for near as long this morning as I should have but did at least a set of each. Need to get to work early today, too hot there to stay all day.

Drink your water everyone. Take your vitamins. We WILL win out over whatever our bodies want to do to spite us.

  • Sunday -- Sherry, 22:47:48 06/09/02 Sun
Hi all, I spoke to Nancy this morning, she has been a little MIA lately, so I hope she managed to get back on track today. I haven't. Still a little off track, carb wise, but keeping calories pretty low for the day.

Went to MacDonalds today and had one of their advertised chicken flatbread sandwiches. It looked really good on the advertisement, but I don't think I've ever eaten anything that had LESS flavor than that. It tasted like things always do when you have a cold and can't taste anything, only I didn't HAVE a cold. I don't know how that place manages to stay in business, I really don't. I rarely eat there because I just don't feel like they give me any value for my dollar, and today was no exception.

Anyway I guess I shouldn't have been eating that sort of food anyway, but still what a disappointment!

My father in law is in the hospital. He entered thinking that he had had a heart attack. All the symptoms, chest pain, pain in his shoulder, shortness of breath. We were supposed to go see him today, but didn't get there yet.

He doesn't take care of himself. Was recently diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. Is on blood pressure medicine, is supposed to eat a low carb diet. He drinks and smokes, (and probably the most discomfort he has from being in hospital is not being able to have a cigarette), and doesn't eat right.

I feel like I should give him "Protein Power" to read, but I doubt if he would read it. All the classic indications of "hyperinsulinemia" are present in his case, and yet he has yet to consistently do anything about it. He has changed his diet somewhat, but not really much. I guess it is hard for any of us to stick to (myself included), but with death knocking at the door you would think he would try harder.

It certainly makes me stop and think anyway. It can happen to any of us, all that modern way of eating is just deadly. For some of us more than for others, but it is bad for us all.

  • Hi all -- Sherry, 11:38:21 06/08/02 Sat
We are going to go to the movies today, my kids and I. Going to go see "Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood". It doesn't look like the sort of movie I could get my husband to go see with me, so we are going while he is at work.

Scale this morning wanted to go back up to 230 in spite of the fact that I ate only ONE meal yesterday. I managed to coax it down to about 229, so that is what I posted for the day's weight.

Interesting thing though was that my measurements seemed a lot lower than normal. I can't really count on them because it is so hard to know if you are measuring in exactly the same spot you measured in last time. But they were smaller in some of the spots that I KNOW had to be the same area so I guess I will believe them.

I think the muscle building is helping. Diet? Who knows?

Women's bodies are so unreliable anyway, you can do everything right and still find yourself gaining. Men have it a lot easier in that regard. It is much more straight forward for them when they try and lose weight.

Anyway everyone have a good day, drink your water, take your vitamins. Get some excercise.

  • How did you pick your goal weight? -- Katie, 09:44:48 06/08/02 Sat
Well, I've reset my goal weight. I was going by the 100 pounds plus 5 for every inch over 5' which would have set my weight at 135. I've thought long and hard about it, and done a lot of research, and I've reset my goal to 150. As near as I can figure out, my lean body weight is about 135 now, so even 150 may be an unrealistic goal. I'd love to be a size 6 , but that is totally unrealistic for me. I know a woman who is 5'5" and wears a size 4 and I think that she looks anorexic (and she's always complaining about the size of her stomach).

How have some of you picked goal weights? Did you pick a weight that you felt good at in the past (as suggested by Dr. A in his book)? Did you calculate your lean body weight, and add a healthy body fat percentage for your age/gender?

At first, I thought that I would know when I got there. I'm a little leery of not having a "goal". I'm afraid that I'd stop at a size just because I got tired of fighting this all the time and end up selling myself short of being the best that I can be.

My immediate goal is a pair of size 18 Wrangler's that I fit into for about 2 days before I got pregnant. I got loads of compliments about how great I looked, but I knew that I still wasn't even close to my goal. My second goal is a size 14, finally out of the soft and cuddly woman's sizes (My SO gets so upset when I call it the fat lady section).

Puberty set off some nasty changes in my body. At the age of 12, I weighed 125 at 5'2" and was constantly being told I was fat. By the age of 14, I was 5'5" and wore a size 14 and boys made fun of me in the halls at school (most girls in my school wore a size 0 or 2). I wore a size 18 at the age of 19 (my wedding dress), and haven't been anything smaller than a 20 since.

  • Hey Sherry... I thought you were going to stop looking at the scale... -- Katie, 19:45:29 06/07/02 Fri
Sherry, how about having your DH hide the scale for a couple of weeks. You know how to eat, you've been working out, you know that it makes you crazy. If you need someone to join you, I'll even give mine up too.

I was up 8 pounds overnight at the beginning of the week, with no changes in eating habits. I know that it's water retention due to the weather change, and there's nothing that I did wrong, but I've been fighting depression all week because of it.

What do you say to weighing tomorrow and not weighing again for two weeks? We know our scales bounce up and down and maybe a break from the craziness will help. Just focus on how much better we feel when we don't eat carbage and enjoy living instead of focusing on a darned number that is not even related to our worth as human beings?

I order products off the Atkins website. They very kindly include an ENTIRE box of bars with each order. They are the nastiest tasting things ever. So dry and blah. I hate to throw three boxes of them away. Anyone got any ideas on what to do with them (Be nice) other than use as cauling the bathtub???I thought about grinding them up and mixing with something to make a crust for a low carb cheesecake or something? Some kind of low carb Blizzard????

Hi all. It's been a long time. I've recently made alot of life changes and I'm feeling stronger than I have in a long time.

    Here's the story...
I was going along really well on the diet. Lost alot of weight (about 30 lbs) Then I moved from the town where I have always lived to the big city of Boise. Then I wasn't able to start back up again. I was broke and unemployed and just screwed up. then I got a job. Then I just existed for about six months (that was when I made my last appearance here.) and now I am back. Sadly, I've put back on most of the weight that I've lost. But I have a renewed strength and vigor and I'm pretty much an expert at this diet anyway...so I am roaring back into action. I've also quit smoking, which is what is giving me the strength to do this again.

Anyway. I'll be spending the next hour or so checking out what has happened since my departure. Feel free to email me or respond to this. I'll be checking it occasionally. Later!

    Dan A.

  • Crying this morning -- Sherry, 08:44:17 06/06/02 Thu
I get so frustrated. My husband must think I'm crazy. This month I'm pulling out all the stops. I've told myself this. Going to stick to low carb, going to keep calories high enough, going to excercise every other day if not every day.

Well I've been doing that. Excercised yesterday, tried to drink enough water, took my vitamins, ate breakfast and lunch, didn't eat dinner though. Went to bed instead. Calories most likely weren't high enough, but once in awhile you would think that my body would appreciate a LOW calorie day. No it doesn't.

I still can't get rid of that stupid mind set. I knew last night I should eat something for dinner even if I wasn't hungry, but my old bad habits keep telling me that if I don't eat I will lose.

Scale didn't move at all today, a time or two I thought it was on the low side of 230, but then it seemed to go back up.

I'm so tired of being fat. So frustrated that all my efforts seem wasted. Struggle and struggle to do everything right and still I look like this ugly blimp. I hate having to force feed myself to get enough calories that I can lose. I am not totally convinced that is what is wrong in the first place, I know last month when I tried eating more for a few days I lost, but it is so hard to convince myself that is the problem. Too I know that when I do (if ever) lose weight I will have to get used to eating fewer calories again and I'm afraid to change and get used to more then have to change back.

In addition it is just extremely hard to increase calories and make them all fat and protein, how much of that stuff can a person stand to eat? In my case not much.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm so tired of trying so hard and getting so little result, and then when I do get something that works temporarily, I wind up going back up again. It is like my body says "THIS is what you will weigh and don't you dare try and change it."

    I just want to cry.

Hey Everyone! Well the scale are very slow - - I am going to tried to eat only meat for 2 days to see if will help. I found a great tasting candy bar "Pure De-Lite" chocolate bar only 3.4 carbs - even less because it has 1.1 grams of fiber. It mention something about Maltitol, as low-digestible carbohydrate, is omitted from carb total count because it does not impact the blood sugar. Anyway it tasted great!! I can not have it often it $1.99 a bar - kind of expensive. I am stress these days - struggling with school system over son's education. He is special needs child.

  • Vitamin C tablets -- Heather Anderson, 11:28:00 06/06/02 Thu
I started the low carb diet three days ago. I am diligently taking the supplements that the Dr. Atkins diet book suggests. I noticed today though--that my chewable Vitamin C tablet is sweet--the bottle doesn't list nutritional facts so I don't know how many carbs these tablets have!!! I was taking two tablets a day until I just noticed--I have been staying under 10 carbs a day so far--without the Vit C factored in--so maybe I'm still safely under the 20 carb minimum even though I'm taking the two chewable Vit C tabs a day. Does anyone have a ball park figure of how many carbs these tabs might contain? Thanks.

  • Good morning -- Sherry, 08:18:35 06/05/02 Wed
It is going to be hot today, already starting to get there. I'm wearing shorts to work today even with my fat legs, hope no one gets sick... :)

I worked out this morning for a little while, scale reads the same as yesterday morning, but I didn't have to fight for it today, guess I drank my water earlier yesterday.

I was thinking about the calories per pound thing today, and it seems to me that the best way to calculate it would be based on your "lean body mass" According to Protein Power that is the weight your body would weigh if you had no fat.
When I calculated that amount it came out to 114 pounds. That is your muscle and bone, the things you don't WANT to lose. So I took that number and multiplied it by the 15 calories per pound that is to maintain, and came up with 1710 minimum calories per day. (just to maintain lean body mass). Fat is less active, I can't see it needing as many calories per day just to maintain, (and who wants to maintain it anyway?) So I figured at a losing rate 8 calories a day should be enough to lose some fat and not put your body into starvation mode. If I have 100 calories of fat on top of the 114 of lean, and feed it 8 calories per, that comes out to another 800 calories per day. 1710 + 800 still comes out to 2510 per day.

So I figure if I eat between 1710 and 2510 I should still lose some weight, but falling below 1710 might cause me to lose the muscle I don't want to lose. Interesting that the figures (even with me guessing) come out to similar to what the experts came up with.

Going to work early today, want to get out of there earlier than I did yesterday. It is going to be a hot one, and I don't want to have to work until 6.

  • Sigh -- Kel, 07:10:55 06/06/02 Thu
Well I haven't been very good. Not terribly bad either, but it's stalling my progress. I'm still doing the exercise plan like I promised myself I would do, but the food isn't going as well.

Either I eat too much protein every day, or like yesterday, I was training a new hire and we went out to lunch. I ordered carne asade tacos, but I ate most of the tortillas that they came on. Then yesterday right as I was leaving work, I lost my patience with one of our trouble-making employees and told her off lol. I must admit, it didn't look too good. Her boss was there, but not a witness. My boss wasn't there, so I had to call him at home. He says we will sort it out tomorrow - oh joy, that's this morning.

Anyway, lastnight I comforted myself again with extra food while waiting for my boss to call me back. So today the scale is the same. I'm going to try to be good today, but to be honest, I just don't really hold out much hope. I need someone to remind me why I'm doing this and tell me to get it together I guess. Anyway, thanks for listening to me whine lol.

I know a lot of you talk about taking them, and I know it's necessary to take a multi because I'm lacking the carbs but exactly what is recommended. Do they help you lose weight or just stay healthy?

I'm doing well. I've adopted a slightly different attitude lately. Rather than an all or nothing approach, I'm allowing small amounts of foods I normally consider forbidden (but keeping strict control over the amount). I'm trying to eat mostly protein and fat, with occasional carb foods. Increasing excercise levels; trying to get some every day.

Scale is down lately, just a sort of general downward trend. Nothing dramatic, just averaging a little lower weight, and that feels good.

I'm glad June is here. I love summer.

Well, I am entering my 5th day and feeling pretty good. Am off today so going to enjoy it. Had thought about going to the beach, but is overcast so not beach day. Think I will go to the park and get my exercise out of the way first thing.
Am going to do a little pampering this morn, manicure and tanning bed, then on the Wally World to spend money.
So far am feeling great. Woke up with no appitite, so going to wait it out till I am hungry and then eat. Still havent stepped on a scale. Can't tell if I have lost any weight, dont think so. When I do weigh am going to take my measurements to gage myself with if I don't drop weight.
Going to start keeping up with what I eat and carb intake by writing it down. Hadn't really been doing that, just kind of guessing. I know I have been going over 20, so am going to be accountable.
Just feeling so good. Think its that low carb high that comes after a few days of cutting out the carbs. Hope it stays.
Have a little challenge to confront tonight. Hoping it goes well. We have a birthday party to attend tonight. I am sure there will be a lot of high carb food and i know alcohol. So am going to do my best not to be tempted. Will eat before hand. Am not a big drinker, but do love a Crown and Fresca over crushed ice once in a while. Am pretty sure the alcohol will not be a problem. I do find that weekends are a little hard. I have to find thing to keep me busy. Guess I am used to the structure from a work week.
Well wishing everyone a great day and a wonderful weekend.

    Morning, everyone --
Moving across the country, the midwest is reporting in. Looks like another hot and humid day in St. Louis, but beautiful blue skies with thick, puffy, white clouds. Very pretty. Our condo pool is open so if I can't make it to the Rec Center, I can thrash around in it. Nobody uses it except to sunbathe in the afternoons. I've been taking midnight swims (well, more like 1030 pm swims) and feeling like a movie star! LOL
Finally down to my weight before I went to England on May 6. (Lost a whole month it seems.) Would love to see 170 by July 4, but 175 is more realistic. But the important thing is that Kate has found her groove again.

    Have a great LC day!

Well after my first fake-bake yesterday, I felt pretty good. That is until the tan acutally developed. My butt is really red lol. Funny how the rest of me wasn't affected, just my butt and back of my upper thighs. It wasn't really very easy sleeping lastnight, so I think I'm going to have them adjust my tan-time less for the next session...

Other than that, I feel pretty good and pretty optimistic about this month and this summer. I have beach patrol again today so that will give me some added exercise as well. I did my exercise this morning; ate right for breakfast and I'm hoping this whole deal will go more easily since I start another work week today, and it's always easier when I'm working (except for when they have devils food chocolate cake!) I hope everyone has a great LC day!
