Subject: I haven't read the book, but........
In reply to: Octobersan 's message, "SUGAR BLUES!!!" on 10:45:38 08/23/02 Fri

I've noticed some benefits from low-carb that no other diet or way of life has produced. First of all is energy. BA (before Atkins) I ate plenty of sugar and I had daily doses of Red Bull (a caffeine and vitamin boosted carb drink, for those not familiar), but I can't say I even *noticed* an effect from it. And I can't recall the the last time I was able to get out of bed in the morning without hitting the snooze repeatedly. The only thought that used to go through my head when the alarm went off was "If I could just sleep 2 more hours". Every morning was torture trying to drag my butt out of bed. Now, I wake up MUCH easier even if I've had less than my fair share of sleep. Morning still isn't my favorite time of day, but I only hit the snooze two or three times now and mostly that's out of habit.

I didn't know it was possible to feel this way. We are brainwashed into thinking that high carb gives us energy, but until we give low carb a fighting chance, we are in the dark to the truth.

In fact, I have an advertisement that I tore out of an old McCall's magazine from June 1965. It's from sugar manufacturers touting the greatness of sugar and encouraging mothers to feed it to their kids because they need the energy. These days they don't blatantly advertise it, they just put it in almost everything we eat.

Here's the ad's text verbatim, just because..........
"The name of the game is energy. Billy never stops moving. Even when he's asleep, he's growing. Kids need energyless, artificially sweetened food and beverages like a china shop needs a bull. Keep enough sugar in your youngster's life. For energy. Kids need what sugar's got." [and then in a little box at the bottom] "Note to mothers: Exhaustion may be dangerous--especially to children who haven't learned to avoid it by pacing themselves. Exhaustion opens the door a little wider to the bugs and ailments that are always lying in wait. Sugar puts back energy fast--offsets exhaustion. Synthetic sweeteners put back nothing. Energy is the first requirement for life. Play safe with your young ones--make sure they get sugar every day."

That's a bit of a mind blower, isn't it? Get the little critters hooked on sugar as early as possible so it becomes a life long habit.

The second thing I've noticed since I've gone LC is that my tongue is rarely coated anymore. I always brush my tongue along with my teeth and now there isn't as much need. A surprising benefit.

Thirdly, I seldom wake up with puffy eyes anymore. And it's not due to lack of salt because I still eat plenty of it.

I'm not losing weight at the moment, but with the side benefits, I'm not too upset right now. Well, moderately annoyed.
