In reply to: Kel 's message, "Sherry can I ask what activities you are doing for your cardio? I sooooo hate cardio, and I'd like to see what other people who don't care much for it either have chosen to do. Can you give me some ideas other than aerobic videos & walking?" on 13:23:41 08/14/02 Wed

Well Kel as you know I hate cardio. I don't have a lot of endurance for it, and keeping it up for 20 minutes straight is still hard for me. But I have been trying to get some in. Last time I tried I went on a bike ride with my kids on a trail near our house that runs by the stream.

I picked the worst day and time of day to do it (because of the heat) and the guys on my workout board said that it wasn't really aerobics since I didn't keep my heart rate elevated the whole time. It was hot and we had to stop a lot to rest in the shade.

Before that I tried using my healthrider (this is one of those devices where you push with your feet and pull with your hands. It is pretty intense and works your whole body, by the time I've been on it five or ten minutes it feels like an hour or more to me. And to be honest I can't keep it up for the full 20 minutes. But what I did was to stay on it as long as I could stand, and then I got off and did crunches on the ball, and obliques side crunches on the ball and lie on your side leg lifts at at aerobic pace for the rest of the 20 minutes. It worked. I kept my heart rate high.

What I am thinking of doing (and I'm still a little afraid to) is to buy myself roller blades and go skating with the kids maybe down our trail. I'd like to lose a little more weight first so that my center of balance will be more normal, but I don't see any reason why aerobics has to be boring. Might as well enjoy it. Skating or bike riding is probably the two funnest ways I can think of to spend the time.

So what do you do?
