  • Need help with low carb foods!!! -- Emma UK, 12:34:08 08/31/02 Sat
    HI!!!

I wonder if anyone can help me - i am in my induction phase of atkins and so far doing ok. I am still very unsure of what i can and cant eat! I seem to be living on water, fresh meat, eggs and salad! I am only allowed 20 grams carb a day at the moment, and i am going to the cinema soon. Can someone tell me if there are any snacks i can have while i'm there like ice creams, popcorn, etc????

    Thanks Emma UK

I've noticed since doing the atkins diet that i am much more soft and flabby.Especially my arms, but also legs and stomache.I used to be more firm,is this a result of the diet?Is it from the breaking down of the fat?Or possibly because of the weight loss?(i've now lost 45 lbs in just 10 weeks)My whole body is much different but...i just dont understand the very soft flabby arms. And does anybody out there know which exercises are best for these flabby arms that just dont seem to be getting any smaller? Thanks!

Sherry,in an earlier post you said you have a healthrider.I just picked one up today at a garage sale for $20.00,it's just like brand new w/2 work out videos with it,the lady said she paid $500.00 for it and never used it..i believe she never did because the videos were never even opened.( i have no idea what they cost though, but for $20.00 i figured i couldn't go wrong)Anyway..i havent had a chance to use it yet,i thought i'ld watch the videos..beginner and advanced tonight.Do you use yours and what kind of a workout is it?Do you think it'll be very beneficial?Does anybody else out there have one...and what is your opinion on it???I really think my treadmill is doing wonders as far as my weight loss goes so...i dont want to take away from that but...if this healthrider works well,i'll fit it in somewhere.LOL thanks !

  • Feeling more energy -- Shara, 14:42:47 08/30/02 Fri
I really had a case of the doldrums this week. There just seemed like so much to do and Matt's vacation is ending soon. We did enjoy the beach though. The water was warmer than in the past. We sat together and read the new Darwin Awards book. Today will be a good diet day. I've planned out all my meals and I refuse to cheat. (She says as she squares her shoulders like waiting for an attack).

I'm working on the newsletter today. Please remember that I'm always looking for new material and also for any articles that anyone would like to submit. Please email me if you would like to write one.

The good news is that Matt had a chance to finish the weight tables this week! Thank you for being so patient while we got this done. He really got hit hard with deadlines at work right after starting them. The challenges will be all set and ready to go by Monday. I'll post it here and also in the newsletter.

  • Bless the Lord for little boys. -- Sherry, 09:44:49 08/30/02 Fri
    Little boys. Aren't they wonderful?

Today I gave my little boy a hug and he says to me "You know what Mommy?" "What?" "I can put my arms all the way around you...See?... That means you're thinner."

"Really?" "Yes I used to could only hug you like this" and he shows me with his hands on my sides (toward the back).

"Wow thank you" I told him. Then he says. "I wasn't sure if that was a complement or what's the other word?" "an insult?" "Yeah".

I told him it is always a complement to tell someone they are thinner. People LOVE hearing that.

  • Good morning everyone -- Sherry, 09:39:57 08/29/02 Thu
September is fast approaching. With the coming of cooler weather, we should all make a determination to "come alive" with activity. Summer is a busy time filled with heat and sometimes the lethargy that goes along with it.

Fall weather should help us get active, get back some energy to stick to our plan, maybe make a new plan.

I think the one thing I'm going to do is to go buy some roller blades and start skating with my kids.

But we also need to start thinking about a new challenge for September. Anyone into the idea of a "before and after" photo for September's progress? Granted there isn't a whole lot that can be done in one month, but maybe 5 pounds of weight loss, and possibly a little muscle built. Some fat percentages changed? I still need to buy some fat calipers. I don't much trust my Tanita scale for measuring fat percentages, and I want a more accurate way of measuring progress. Scales lie. Clothes fitting or not depend on water weight held or lost. I'm not sure the pinchers are any better, but I still want to get one.

Any Ideas for the coming month?

Hi - I just stumbled onto this site a few days ago and have been wading through all the recent messages. I read the Atkins book several years ago but never really did it for more that a few weeks. I recently decided to go no-carb again (because I'm definately a carboholic). I know it works - I eventually stop craving things and do loose but after a couple of weeks I get really tired of meet, cheese and eggs which is the majority of what I've been eating. I'm especially interested in "Kel" and the moderate carb diet she's been doing. Would appreciate hearing from some of you as to what kinds of things you eat. What did you eat for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner yesterday?? Do you get much variety? Hope I'm not asking for too much. Seems overwhelming trying to figure it all out. Would appreciate any help I can get.

Sherry can you post something to your weightlifter board for me? They know you, and you would probably receive a response, better than I would if I posted.

I've really done something to my quads. This happened in my Ju Jutsu class on Monday night. I was in pain yesterday morning, but I was still able to work. This morning I couldn't even get down my stairs. I've GOT to work tomorrow no matter what. My job involves a lot of getting in and out of my unit, and I'm finding that really hard right now.

My quads have no strength in them whatsoever, and when I try to get them to hold my weight (like bending to sit in a chair; getting in and out of a car), they hurt like hell. They shake and sometimes they don't always hold me and one of them will absolutely give out.

The question I need to ask is.. should I be doing nothing to let the muscles repair themselves? OR... should I be doing a little something each day so that this doesn't happen again next Monday? Also, what can be done to try and alleviate some of the pain? when will my normal strength in these muscles return? Okay okay I guess that was more than one question lol. But I'm serious sis, I don't know what to do.

Hi, I wrote several of you "pep talks" which I hope have helped, but finding my own pep is a little harder. Writing to all of you helped me a little, so I will try not to be too much of a downer on my own little letter.

I have felt a little low energy lately. My workouts haven't been as intense as I would like. I tried doing the BFL type of workout yesterday and was a little shocked at it. I still haven't planned things out or decided when I am starting, but I am getting a little closer to realizing how much I'm trying to take on. Maybe it isn't a good idea (yet).

My weight is up (but then TOM's still here), and I'm starting to get back some enthusiasm, which usually goes away just before this part of the month.

I need a new job, I'm not making enough money to be comfortable with being able to meet all the bills and still have a little left over. That has me a little discouraged, and that discouragement seems to bleed over into other aspects of my life. Best to take charge of the things that are really bothering me so that I have the energy to tackle other things.

I'm not sure if I want to continue trying to low carb or maybe try something else for awhile. I feel pretty fat right now. Low carb works, if you work it. I'm not sure if I have the self discipline right now to work it.

  • The new girl on the block -- Carmen, 22:08:05 08/25/02 Sun
Hi all! I was searching the internet for a low carb lifestyle support group and ran across this one. Another reason I was searching online is because I have hit a plateau and am looking for some advise. I have been losing and gaining the same little pound for a few weeks now. I'm thinking of going back on the induction diet to see how things go.
A bit about me. I have been on the low carb thing for about 2 months and have lost 25 lbs, the most I have ever lost off ANY diet I would like to add. I weighed 215, and am now down to 190 and I eat an average of 15 carbs a day. I went from a size 20/22 to a size 16/18. It's a wonderful feeling!! I am a divorced/single mom of a 3 y/o girl, I am 26. I have a fairly active lifestyle....have to be active to keep up with a 3 y/o ;) My family has a strong history of being insulin resistant going back for many generations. My father has reached the point where he is type 2 diabetic with a heart condition. I do not want the same fate and decided to get serious about getting healthy....thank GOD I found the low carb diet!!
Right now, I am just frustrated that the weight is not coming off like it did in the first few weeks. I do not indulge on carbs, I have actually lost the craving for them for now...except ice cream, I'll crave that forever ;) I eat three squares a day with a little snack in between sometimes. I have been bad about drinking H2O. When I first started, water was all I would drink. Now I drink teas and diet sodas mostly. Does that have something to do with the plateau? I can't think of anything else I am doing that would cause this stall in my weight loss. oh, I did find these low carb chocolate bars by the name of "de-lite" they claim to have only 2.0 to 3.8 carbs per bar (depending on the flavor). I save one of these everyday as my after dinner treat. Has anyone heard anything about these? I would hate to give these up because this is the only way I get my daily serving of chocolate to keep myself from killing people ;)(they actually TASTE like chocolate) All you chocoholics know what I'm talkin about! Anyone have any advise that they would like to share? Sorry this is so long!

    Thank you, Carmen

Is it really necessary to go through induction? I guess what I mean is, if I immediately reduce my carb intake to around 30-35 a day, won't I experience weight loss, even though it might be a little slower? Every time I've started Atkins, I've never stuck with induction long enough to get past the "tired" part before I just give up because of feeling crummy. So, could I just skip the induction completely? Thanks for your feedback...

Today has been one heck of a day! Terrible to say the least! First I accidently ran over my kids new puppy, and killed it. Jeez I feel so bad!!! Then to top it off I totally messed up my carbs today, guess cause I feel so bad, I just ate and ate and ate!!! BREAD, just plain BREAD!!! Things were going so well till now! I just wish I had a magic wand or a magic geenie to turn back the clock, I would have made sure that puppy wasn't under my car. I knew better too, because ever since we got her she stays under there, even though I looked, I didn't see her. I just feel terrible now, and on top of all that now I have to work hard to get back to yesterday, I sure hope I didn't mess up my ketosis. Anyways, thanks for listening, I needed to talk about it. I didn't want to tell my kids I was the one that killed thier puppy, so I blamed it on a stranger, didn't want them to hate me. Now I feel even worse for lying to them. Even though my husband and I gave her a proper burial, I think I feel worse than they do about it! Oh well, life goes on and tomorrow is another day, I sure hope it is better than today. Guees I better go back on induction for a few days :(

I have been ill for the past two days, and have lost my momentum in my eating plan. From eating nearly nothing on Sun. to a carb-fest today (well, really not all that bad, but couldn't resist a 1/2 cup rice with my dinner, which is way less than my pre-LC days) Still trying to find ways to force all the calories I need in a day (the past 2 have been very low, if I had to venture a guess, I would say under 800 per day) I am afraid to step on the scale. If I have lost, it will be due to the illness (sore throat, swollen glands) and will be gained back in short order. Or worse yet, I will have gained because I am in starvation mode. I guess I will try to stay off the scale a few days and let myself get back to normal.

  • coffee -- Mary, 12:35:11 08/27/02 Tue
This is my first post. I've been doing Atkins on and off since October 2001. Like everybody else I lost a lot right away, but then I gained it all back over the holidays. With hard work I took off 8 pounds from January to May and then put it all back on over the summer-- barbecues, etc. I don't have a lot to lose-- about 20 pounds-- but I'm motivated because I'm 44, my mother is Type II, and I've put on all the extra weight in the last 4 years. Something is changing in my body and I'm afraid that in 10 years I'll be 40 pounds overweight. Aside from the weight issue, I just think carbos in general trigger binges on sweets and that can't be good for me.

So, I'm thinking of doing CAD for awhile, because it makes cooking for the kids so much easier. The problem is that I just can't let go of the decaf coffee with cream. God!! Whatever I try, I end up drinking 6 cups a day. I just went on the diet this week, and switched to decaf from regular coffee-- and I'm pretty tired. Sometimes I just go take a twenty minute nap. It does seem to be getting better...

Do I have to give up the coffee to be successful on CAD? How about if I just give up the cream. Creamy coffee is what got me through Atkins the first time...

  • For anyone interested in CKD, i am starting Monday morning -- Joe, 04:00:14 08/28/02 Wed
I have posted about CKD a few times this week since i stated learning about it. CKD stands for Cyclical Ketogenic Diet. In simple terms you do Atkins induction during the week and on the weekends you "carb up". You then couple this with a weekly workout routine.

this site has a very good over view of CKD

    http://hardbodiessupplements.com/Ketogenicdieting.htm

here is a message board with some very knowledgeable folks

    http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?forumid=52&s=

(i post there as Big Dog)

For your workout schedule you must work your entire body during the first 2-3 days of the week, then on friday you have a "depletion" workout. After depletion you begin your carb up, on Saturday you eat high gylcemic index foods and on sunday you eat low GI foods. The theory behind it is that during the week you are on ketosis (usually sometime Tuesday or wednesday) and burning fat, you also work your muscles and deplete thier glycogen stores. During the carb up phase the carbs will be used to repair and replenish our depleted muscles rather than being stored as fat.

Your workouts late in the week wont be nearly as energetic as early in the week, and that is the way it is intended.

here is the plan i will be following, you fitness routine can be tailored to your needs and preferences but you must be sure to get a full body workout in by wednesday morning at the lates.

Monday AM - Cardio and Chest/Triceps/legs
Tuesday AM - Cardio and Back/Biceps/Shoulders
    Wednesday AM - Cardio
    Thursdau AM - Cardio
Friday PM OR Saturday AM - Cardio and a full body circuit workout.

For monday and tuesday I will use free weights, friday (or satuday) depletion workout will be on machines. But your training methods are up to you.

once the depletion workout is complete (friday night or saturday morning) I will begin the carb up, like i said above - high glycemic on Sat, low glycemic on Sunday. Saturday and sunday must also be low fat foods. And one mor thing to remember is to avoid fructose. From what i have read fructose goes straight to the liver glycogen store rather than to the muscles.

The link i gave above has a link to a page to determine your carb/fat/protein intakes for weekdays and weekends.

If you are currently doing low carb dieting you are suppsoed to begin on a saturday with the carb up phase, if you arent currently on low carb, then start on monday with the carb restrictions

I joined a gym last night. I was supposed to being with carb up phase but i went in this morning and did a very basic upper body workout and some cardio just to workout the kinks and get back inthe groove so I can be ready Monday morning.

Well sorry this is so long and rambling. Hope at least someone finds it useful:

if anyone is interested i will post my starting stats once i do my measurements.

I love when we collectively brainstorm about different strategies and weight loss plans. I have such a hard time doing very low carb, and plus I stalled all the time when I was doing it on a daily basis. I seem to lose more steadily on the moderate carb plan I'm on now.

However, if I could manage the very low carb plan 5 days a week, it would be nice to have some carb-up time on the weekends. Hmmmm, not sure what to do. Just keep doing what has been working so far, or try something different. Lately I've just been so tempted to cheat on my regular plan, something different is sounding very attractive to me.

    Pondering these options tonight.

  • End of Summer blahs -- Shara, 12:39:37 08/27/02 Tue
I'm wondering if we are suffering from the end of Summer blahs. I've been feeling low on energy too the last few days. Sherry, I think you're right about things that are not going good seem to bleed into our other activities, especially dieting. But then again, you can't always be expected to be on the upswing either. Realistically we all have bad times and good times and we should expect that to reflect on how we lose (or gain) weight. I know that my stress level directly relates to how I do on the diet and today is not a good day. We talked about going to Disneyland tomorrow, but even that doesn't seem very exciting to me. I think another reason is that school starts next week, and I'm not sure that I am ready for the routine. I hate routines, and wish I could live every day on the fly, but with children that is impossible. I am proud of my daughter. She seems to be able to juggle so many things and still come out ahead of the game. She started induction again today. She has been able to keep the 17 lbs off that she lost last year and would like to lose another 10 before x-mas. Maybe her enthusiasm as well as us sticking together here will get me motivated again.

You know I was posting a message on the First Day group board and thought of an idea. I was telling someone there about how a visual/physical view of our diet would really help to show our progress and motivate us to keep going. My suggestion there was to go to the grocery store and try holding a few bags of sugar, or close to the equivilant to what you have lost to really see and feel what you've done. But maybe a better solution would be to go to the home improvement store and do it with those bags of topsoil they sell. I mean I'm not sure if I could manage a cart full of 130 lbs of topsoil, but somehow my bones did it for years. That plus another 170. Sheesh, maybe I'll just lose weight trying to figure out how much I lost. LOL

  • Body for LIfe -- Katarina, 03:28:08 08/26/02 Mon
I am interested to read the posts about Body for Life. I found the book about six weeks ago and found it to be informative. I started the plan then. I have had to make modification to the diet part..........I tried his plan, six meals, but found that what works for me best is Atkins (three meals/day, no snacking).

Over the summer I have read every book I could find on eating plans.........Fit for Life, Suzanne Somers, Undiet, Eat more/weigh less, Picture perfect, you name it. I have tried each one and always come back to my Atkins plan.

I lost about 20 pounds on atkins and felt great, kept it off for over one year. But........since Xmas, I have put it all back on, with interest. I went through some stressful times, sickness, etc. (excuses, I know) and thought all this was a reason to eat, eat, eat..... I'm a binger!!

With the Body for Life plan, my only problem was the FREE day, I had good intentions of moderation, but they turn into all day binges (there goes my weekly progress). Sometimes those all day, turned to two and three days. But I always stick with the exercise. I reread the ATkins book and it describes me to a TEE, so I went backto that. Have to give away all that fruit, oatmeal, yogurt......oh well. Now I plan on one Free day per month, for a special occasion. I can't handle any more than that.

I know I thought, Do I want to commit to a 12 week plan? Then I figured, why not, at the end of 12 weeks I can be more toned, fitter and maybe a little thinner or I can be heavier, etc...............

I like the discipline of the plan. I made up weekly packets to keep all the charts organized. At the end of each week I write my thoughts, etc. I love the program. After six weeks I do feel more toned ( a few less jiggles). I plan to continue with a second challenge after the first is done.

I'd enjoy hearing others experiences with this program.

  • I don't follow Atkins but... -- Kel, 05:29:26 08/26/02 Mon
I think I'm going to have an induction day today, just to make sure I get myself back on track. Yesterday I had some chocolate and a piece of cake to get rid of some nagging sugar cravings, which are gone now (for the moment anyway).

Sherry, you are so right when you say that we as human beings need to recognize that we aren't perfect, and that sometimes we will perform to less than perfect levels of excellence. It made me feel a little better about yesterday when I read that, so thank you.

Anyway, I'm going to do an induction day today. Since I have work today & school ahead of me tonight, hopefully that will keep me occupied enough to not dream of eating other things, not on induction. Anyone having a hard time getting back on track is welcome to join me in this effort to re-focus. Have a great day & good luck!

I got back this morning at around 4 AM. It was an OK weekend as long as you don't include getting hit by a total stranger in a park. Long story, nothing hurt, just my pride, a little. It seems that I missed a few things here while I was gone. I didn't get to check in as much as I would have liked. It's Monday. New day, new week. I'll be handing out warm fuzzies at the door on the way in if anyone would like one. I need more coffee. More later.

  • I've read the book -- Katie, 09:16:14 08/26/02 Mon
I actually read "The Sugar Blues" about 4 years ago. It's pretty scary stuff. I'll admit that it's not the best thing on earth for you, but it's not as bad as addiction to a narcotic substance.

I rarely allow my son to have sugar because he is at high-risk for developing diabetes. I don't however ban it altogether. I'm leery of making any food completely off-limits for fear that he'll just go crazy on it when he's old enough that I can't control his meals.

I've not yet seen anyone die instantaneously of sugar ingestion. Usually people go into shock, comas, and then die. That's what I fear for myself. I have to very carefully balance the sugar that I allow myself with protein and fat to keep from passing out from the insulin onslaught.

I actually worry a lot more about my nicotine addiction than I do about sugar addiction. I can control and regulate my sugar intake a lot more readily than my nicotine intake.

  • More sugar anyone??? -- Octobersan, 14:41:01 08/25/02 Sun
I don't blame Kel (see below) for defending sugar. It is simply the culture. Even though each and every one of us is on this board because of it. Here's something that further demonstrates my point (and I'm really not making this up). This weekend there was a little festival here in town, one of the non-profit groups with a booth set up to make money was the local chapter of the Diabetes Foundation. They were selling chocolate milkshakes. If they don't even get it, who will?

  • I'm back in the saddle again... -- Katie, 10:06:42 08/25/02 Sun
Well... after a one week cheat for the birthday blues, I restarted on Monday. On Monday, I was at 245, and today I was at 233 (2 pounds lower than my pre-cheat weight). I have another pound to go to get to my all-time low, but should hit that in another day or so.

I did induction for 3 days, but then started adding in some non-induction foods (a few strawberries, a little nuts), but still staying at 20 carbs a day. I know that my huge gain during the week that I was off was water-weight, as were most of my losses this week. I think the last 2 pounds were actually fat though, since I'm lower than when I started.

I still have today to get through, but I'm hopeful about my weigh-in numbers tomorrow.

  • I FINALLY made it through the weekend!!!! I generally fail on the weekends. But this weekend i was able to stay on plan pretty well -- Joe, 04:27:19 08/26/02 Mon
One thing that has helped me in the last week is that i have allowed myself 1 high carb food per day. Kinda like mixing Atkins and CAD. It isnt a full meal, just one food. One day last week i had a piece of ice cream cake, friday i had a funnel cake at the fair and Saturday i drank a beer during the race.

Through all of that i dropped almost 5 pounds in one week and was able to get through the weekend without it being a total carb fest like usual.

I start at World's Gym on Labor Day but i am torn between two workout plans - Body for Life and one called CKD.

CKD would be perfect for me. You maintain a low carb diet through the week, then on the weekends you "carb up", during the week you also follow a strict workout regimen. Which is exactly how my diet has gone all summer, i just ahvent been working out during the week.

  • Body for life (number 2) -- Sherry, 01:07:33 08/25/02 Sun
Hi guys, well I bought it, the Body for Life book. I read it all in about one day. It is pretty interesting, I recognized some of it as Brian Tracy stuff, setting goals and having the right attitude toward reaching them. It never hurts to be reminded of that stuff, we can all use the pep talk from time to time. Having someone apply it specifically to getting in shape and losing fat was a little new and different and useful in its application though.

The weight training part of it is similar to what I've been trying to do already, so I don't think it is going to be too hard for me to "accept the challenge" and go for it. It is structured a little differently than I am used to, maybe a little more intense than I've been doing, but not too much of a stretch.

The aerobics part is interesting. Only twenty minutes every other day (with one day a week off), so it would be 20 minutes on the days I don't do the weight training. I think I can handle that, although it is more intense than I've been doing.

The diet, now that is a little different. I'm not sure I will be entirely doing the diet. Apparently there are those who modify his plan with respect to the diet (thanks Joe for that link), and I may modify my diet accordingly. He does seem to have respect for low carb, but has you "balance" protein and carb intake. You eat a portion (defined as a palm size or clenched fist size serving) of protein and carb for six meals in the day. Some of those can be protein shakes. (I think he cuts fat a little too low personally).

But he has you take a "free day" off once a week, this is a day that you neither follow the diet or excercise, but eat whatever you choose. The purpose of this is that (he says) it fools your body into not realizing that you are trying to lose weight. So as not to activate the "starvation mode" that we all worry about.

He does seem to go along with the workout on an empty stomach and don't eat for an hour afterwards theory (that Protein Power talks about).

I think the main difference in this approach that I think would be useful for me is all the planning and record keeping, and the specific number of day or weeks toward reaching a specific goal. I've been floundering for so long , because I feel like I haven't been able to stick to promises I have made to myself, haven't been focused on a goal within a specific period of time (a goal without a time limit is essentially just a dream), and haven't been really reviewing and marking (and celebrating) my progress.

Some of the things he said in there that I really really respected and valued was something along the line that if you commit to this challenge you must follow through. Doing so builds confidence, and confidence is VERY important to success. He said "would you trust someone who consistently changes the rules of the game, who can't be relied upon to finish what they start? or keep the promises they have made?" I'm paraphrasing here, I don't know if that was an exact quote, but he was applying it to promises we make to ourselves. We have to keep those promises or we lose confidence and trust in ourselves. Wow. To me that was pretty intense. I've made a few promises to myself lately that I haven't kept, and I know what he is saying. I surely have lost confidence as a result.

He has you take a picture of yourself before you start, and urges taking pictures every month afterward (for three months or 18 weeks), including an "After" picture. Now I don't expect to be much different three months from when I start than I am right now, but one thing is for sure, if I AM different I will be able to see it. The way I've been going, I wouldn't know if I had made any real progress in three months. So this part kind of appealed to me.

He has all these photos of people who started the challenge, and finished it. Totally different before and after shots. Many of the women weren't that fat to start with, so their photos show pudgy to really lean, but some of the men! Wow. Total transformations. Some of them with these huge guts, going down to muscle bound and lean! Amazing, but hard to believe they did it in only 18 weeks.

So now I just need to pick a day to start. Because of the planning involved, I don't want to just jump right in. Eating 6 meals a day and excercising every day but one will require a little mental work to prepare for.

His next "challenge" on his website starts in about a month (I think) I was thinking I would do a little practice run until the official start date and then actually commit and join his next challenge. I will probably modify the diet to be a little more low carb (though maybe not too much, with this much excercise I may need more carbs than usual), and I think I will take his "one day off" a week, but I really want to try this. I bought a swim suit, and a camera (which normally I wouldn't be caught dead in) so that my husband can take a picture or two of me for my "before" shot. I'm sure it will look horrible and if I can even look a little better after 18 weeks I will be pleased.

I will be re-reading the book, and will post some of the things I liked about it in a few days. If this sounds good to anyone and they would like to commit to 18 weeks, maybe you could join me in this? If not, I will keep you all informed of any progress I manage to make.

Even though it went against everything I believe in, (ie. sticking to the diet consistantly works best), I couldn't take the pressure anymore. I was constantly craving sugar and fake sweets just weren't gonna cut it this time.

One thing about this plan, is when I stick to my diet and I don't want to, I become really irritable due to the fact I feel deprived. I was in a sucky mood and that wasnt gonna cut it today either. This is the last weekend before school starts for the little ones and I've got beach patrol. EVERYBODY is going to be at the beach; it's gonna be a zoo.

Funny thing, I gave in and went to the 7-11 and bought some chocolate. I ate it on the way home, and I already feel more optimistic about the day and about the future. What is it about sugar that can do that so abruptly to a person? I know I'll probably have a sugar crash in about an hour, but for now it's exactly what my body needed. I plan on getting back on track with my very next meal, so hopefully I haven't done too much damage. Well, thanks for letting me vent... love yas! Kel

I really blew it this weekend! My sister and I had our girls only weekend at Branson, MO and I ate things that I have only dreamed about for 8 months now. I had a hamburger-WITH BUN-, a small danish, Starbucks coffee, a roll and oh geeze the list goes on and on. I didn't cheat with soda though, I drank diet(and lots of water). The only thing that might have saved me a few pounds is the miles and miles that I walked. So monday I am going on induction again! Say a prayer for me folks cause my body has had its fix and it is going to take everything I have to break free again. But I am going to do everything I can to be good again.

My sister ( who happens to be a size 4) kept saying "Gosh Sis, it is so good to see you eating again". Even family members just don't get it. Every time she said it I felt myself just cringe inside. Well, time to take control again. Hope all had a good weekend. Later.

Today is my day off & I've just looked at my list of things to do today; none of it looks very fun or interesting. I'm trying to keep myself from snacking on stuff. Boring chores and errands do not hold interest enough for me to not think about food all the time. I don't know what it is with me and food, but it's certainly an unhealthy relationship. I'm working on changing that, but unfortunately, it's not an easy process.

Anyway, the scale was about the same this morning as I expected. It said 149.5, then it changed to 150, so I'm going to assume it's probably closer to 150 today. Now if I can just make it thru the weekend, I will probably see some losses next week. Hope so. I still have a lot of work to do to make it to my goal of 147 by the end of this month.

Other than that, things are just moving along fine and dandy. Trying to stay optimistic and focused here. Not always easy, but I'm making a serious effort.

Started low carb, Wed 8-14-02 of last week. Don't see any results on the scale, but a pound lost. How do I get that darn thing purple?????

This is typically what I eat daily.

    Morning: EAS Advantage Low Carb shake;
    5g-fat/2g-carb/15 protein
OR 1/2 of that, then run and come back and have
5 egg whites, with a "egg beaters" serving.
    total: 0-fat/2-carb/52g-protein

    lunch: Tuna, 0.5g-fat/0-carb/13-protein

    Dinner: Chicken: 7g-fat/1g-carb/17g-protein.

meal breaks: I may have an EAS nutrition bar.
    5g-fat/2.5-carb/26g-protein.

    Low Range Total per day:
    12.5g-fat/5.5g-carb/108g-protein

    Higher Range Total per day:
    20g-fat/20-25g-carb/84-108g-protein

I also drink diet coke/tea with meals.
However, I drink water like its going out of style.LoL!

I lost 6lbs in 3 weeks (I was ok with that) but now I have gained 2 back. I have what I would concider 2 major cheats ( about3/4 cup icecream once and a half a slice of bread the other) but continued in ketosis. I have not been exercising, so I know I have not been building muscle. The best thing I can say right now is that I have not been getting the afternoon sleepies. Oh man, it has been a while since i have posted here, most of the summer in fact! Well i did good and bad this summer, at the beginning i was at the lowest weight i have been at in 2 years, but then i went camping with my family and it was just too dang hard to find foods to keep me full during the week i was there so guess what? That's right, i ended up cheating and all hell broke loose! Well i was on my carb loading for about 12 days til i said NO MORE! and then i resumed induction cold turkey, this is my 4th day back into ketosis and im going strong, jogging nightly, as well as doing a bunch of situps. Now i DO have a question for you all. In my experiences i can gain and loose about 10 pounds in about 2 days. I am pretty sure that part of this may be due to water, but it also seems to show in my clothes every time i go up or down. Has anyone else experienced similar situations? Well, i am doing a lot better eating wise, and i am really happy since i found a great brand of salad dressing that is Less than one carb per 2 tablespoons! that is soo awesome considering the last stuff was 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons. Well i wish everyone health and happiness, and i hope ill post to the board more often!

Now that they will be gone all day I wont have to keep all of their snacks in the house, just some cookies in the cookie jar, but I will buy the kinds I dont like so I wont be tempted. Anyways, I was wondering if any of you have tried the pork rinds that you can pop yourself in the microwave? They are great!!! You can find them over by the microwave popcorn in the grocery store. I have made them my new favorite, they taste good, and they taste fresher. Since I started to eat these the others dont taste as good, probably because they are not kept in plastic bags. Anyway, go try them if you haven't yet.The brand that I like the best is Rudolph's, these cost a lil more, like $3.00 a box, but I think they are worth it. Have a great day!!! Oh and Kel, I hear ya, I too am going to do my best not to cheat the rest of August. Good Luck

I'm in my second week of induction...lost almost 10 pounds, but yesterday my daughter was having a popsicle and when she didn't want anymore, i started eating it, i almost threw it out of my hands when i realized what i was doing, screaming ahhhhhhhhhhh. I mean i know it wasn't much, but i realized that my thoughts that i would never mess up was subconciously taken over!!

I'm loving this plan, i read dr. atkins book and couldn't put it down i found it so interesting how it works. I'm so glad i found this board, you sound like a great group of people!

  • Today I ate rice!!! :-O ..... -- jaytee, 22:42:00 08/20/02 Tue
...but it wasn't my fault. I was held down by a little Japanese lady who shoved it down my throat. And then she insisted on buying me dessert, too! I waited until I got home and did some exercise (which is already getting easier, by the way) before I allowed myself to eat it.

    Hi all--

Today was my lunch date with my new Japanese friend. Kel had suggested Teriyaki, but it wasn't on the menu, so I ordered something called Chicken Rice. It was one of the cheaper items on the menu. It was HUGE! I never saw so much rice on one plate. I ate about a cup and a half and doggy bagged the rest. I won't be eating it though, but I didn't want to leave all that food on my plate. Then the dear woman insisted on buying me dessert, so I got Cheesecake to go. The funny thing is, since I've gone low-carb, I haven't even been tempted to cheat. I feel so bad for those of you who struggle with it. If I was on a standard low-fat, low-cal diet, I'd be having a hard time too, but there are so many decadent things that are allowed on this diet that I feel no need to veer off course. Cream cheese has become my new best friend. And I had never tried SF Jello before Atkins, but I can't tell the difference from the regular stuff, and with whipped cream it's a treat.

If it wasn't for the high fat treats and the artificial sweeteners, I would have taken a trip down the candy aisle long ago.

Well, I think I'll go back on induction now, since I haven't lost in 2 weeks. I hope the exercise will help.

Keep up the good work, guys. Your determination is a real motivation to me.

  • 10 Days to Goal -- Kel, 07:31:38 08/21/02 Wed
Okay I screwed things up earlier in the month, but I am determined to get maximum benefit out of these last 10 days in August. Yesterday, I did okay (even surprised myself lol), but I still have a long way to go to get to my August goal of 147. Today the scale is still showing 152.

It always seems to take a week or so to recover from a multi-day cheat. Often, 7 entire days will go by before the scale even moves. This is discouraging, but I'm ready for it. Hope it forgives me sooner than that, but if not, that's okay too.

I hope today shows me some excitement at work. Yesterday the only excitement I had was finding an occupied stolen car. That would normally be VERY exciting, but the driver looked to be about 90 years old - not the typical demographic for a car thief, so I immediately knew something was wrong. I ran the plate, and it still came back as stolen, so they sent 3 units and 2 detectives to intercept this old man. Turned out he was the registered owner of the vehicle; he had found it and never bothered to tell us it had been recovered. When we asked him why he replied, "I don't need no police." LOL, gotta love it.

Anyway, I hope today proves to be a little more exciting. When I'm kept busy, I don't think about cheating as much. Hope everyone has a great day!

  • Reading Kel's message -- Sherry, 08:17:44 08/20/02 Tue
I know that feeling so well. I started out this month doing so well, excercising every day, eating low carb (induction) and committed to 14 days. Well I made it through 9 without cheating, reached my lowest weight ever and then on the 10th my kids and I went for a bike ride, gathered blackberries and made a blackberry cobbler (which was wonderful by the way).

After that it was all down hill from there. My kids left and went on vacation the next day and I screwed up my diet again and again. Gained back about 7 pounds (as of this morning). I've tried to continue excercising, but without eating properly I've felt my body growing weaker and my motivation slipping.

So I propose a three day no cheat challenge. Starting today. No cheating until Friday (if anyone needs to cheat). Three days is easy, it just requires making up your mind that it is going to be only three days. Maybe you know in the back of your mind that once you have gotten back in control you won't want to cheat after the three days is up, but if you are having trouble making that first step, it helps to think of it as three days only.

Three days. Anyone can not cheat for three days, right? Even me. The worst of the slackers.

I'm getting kind of sick of all these carbs anyway. They don't taste that good. After awhile I realize that all sugary foods taste just the same, they all have that thick too sweet taste, that sort of glues the back of your throat.

So who wants in? If you are struggling, three days will help.

  • Well I am headed back to the gym. -- Joe, 13:25:13 08/20/02 Tue
I haven't done any serious weight training in close to 8 years now. But lately i have been feeling like this huge blob. I have zero energy and am having a tough time sticking to my Atkins plan.

For some reason though i have had this overwhelming urge to get back to the gum. So next week i am joining the local World Gym and going to lift and do cardio from 5am until 6:30 before work each day.

Hopefully i can find my old lifting notebooks so i can go back to my old regimen which worked well through highschool and college. Although this time around i need to focus more on muscle tone than on building muscle mass.

So I'm flipping through my books looking for some inspiration for the September newsletter and what do I find? An article that tells me to drink a cup of hot coffee or tea if I feel the urge to cheat. It's supposed to calm the nerves, and curb you mind's need for snacking. I'm gonna go make some. Oh, and if you are interested I also read another article about tea. Apparently if you mix 1 TBS of brewed tea with 5 cups of water and put it in a spray bottle you can use this mix to kill dust mites in matresses/pillows and any other fabric. It killed them completely and helped with alergies. I love snippets like that.

  • Oops! -- Kel, 06:33:02 08/20/02 Tue
As usual when I plan a cheat, I never seem to be able to control it to just one day. I ate some non-legal foods at a festival on Saturday, not too bad just some, but then I went home to continue eating bad foods for the next 3 days. When in the heck am I going to learn??

I'm 37 years old. I conduct other aspects of my life in a reasonable way. Why can I not be a reasonable person when it comes to eating? Yesterday I vowed to get back on plan and I was pretty good all day until dinner time, when I ate some dark chocolate.

The scale has taken a big notice of my cheating spree. It said 152 this morning. Up 4 lbs -- oops! I guess I really screwed THAT up! Of course the big question in my mind now is... 'is this mostly just water-weight, or is it really 4 lbs of fat I've gained that I will have to lose yet again?'

I'm hoping that some of it is just water weight, and that I will be able to lose back down to where I was. I would feel just awful if I didn't make my goal this month, when I was already so close just a few days ago. I know I'm probably being too critical of myself right now, but I just hate having to admit yet again, that I've been out of control for several days. why in the heck can't I just do things in moderation? I just don't understand my lack of self control, nor do I understand why I've been cursed with this problem. I must have been a really really bad person in a previous life or something to have deserved this.

Well I'm going to give it another try today. Trying to stay on plan and re-focus on my August goal. I started out with a healthy breakfast, but I'm already thinking of a snack (banging head against puter screen). I think it's going to be a long day.

Does any one have any thoughts on carbonataed water vs reg water? I hate water, but have been able to handle the carb water. Does carbonation have any effects on your body (besides burping... LOL) or effects on the how we process our fat?????? Thx for your input.

I'm with Kel and Sherry. I should know by now to stay away from foods I can't avoid. I bought some of that imitation crab last night. Not that it has that many carbs, but it's still too many for on the diet. I thought I could be good and have just a little for a snack, but it turned out I ate most of it. They say that being overweight is like having the devil inside you and it's true. That little voice was telling me it was ok cause I could always be good tomorrow. I need to buy a muzzle for it.

On the good side of things today I just finished a website (my new part time career)and hope you'll take a look. It's at

    http://blackwhiteandcolor.com

These miniature prints are from the artwork of Matt's mom. I would love it if you help me spread the word. Thanks!

i'm doing the atkins diet, and i read his book, but while browsing through a used book store i found the protein power book and decided i'ld buy it just to browse through it.While looking through the book they talked about another book that they highly recommended for motivation,Maximum Achievement,by Brian Tracy.Has anybody else read this book?I havent been able to put it down!I was always one to roll my eyes when somebody mentioned any kind of self help, motivation book. But, i just want to say,if any book can motivate you to achieve your goals this book does.I found it at my local library. If any of you feel you need a litle pick me up and get me motivated again..go look for this book,it's worth it.

  • Feeling everyone else's "gain". -- Chati, 10:45:48 08/20/02 Tue
Hi everyone. I am feeling all the recent posts. I have been slacking lately and I feel it. I am so bloated and puffy. Even my feet and legs. I am hoping that it is water but I don't know. I am trying to be good. I am eating salads and drinking lots of water. I watch the carbs in my salad dressing and everything I put in them. Today is my birthday and my hubby left for Bristol( gone till sunday) to watch the races, so I am feeling a little blue anyway but this isn't helping either.
My family is taking me out to eat tonight (supposed to be a surprise but my sister warned me) and they are taking me to chinese. It is buffet so I can pick and choose but the problem is most of it is breaded. And this weekend my sister and I are going to go to Branson for the weekend and I want to be able to enjoy myself without feeling like such a loser. Oh listen to me, Whah Whah Whah!!!

I guess it is because I was feeling so wonderful, not bloated and "big" feeling and now I am. The worst part is knowing that I can do something about it and feeling so desperate. Well, I will get off my soap box for now. I know that on Monday I am going back on induction no matter what!!!! Good luck everyone and thanks for listening.

Okay, guys. I'm back. I'm back on induction starting today for 2 weeks. My SO and I have agreed to keep each other on the straight and narrow until Thanksgiving day! So I have a 3 month no cheat starting today.

Wish me luck. I know the first time that it's too hot, or I'm too tired that I'll be wishing that I hadn't suggested this to him.

I've found that working and dieting just sucks. LOL So I gave up working... naaaaaaa just kidding. But it really is difficult. It cost me 40 lbs last year. How about listing some of the things that you took for lunch to work or how you avoided eating bad things? I think now that part of my success the first two years is that I worked in a hospital with a cafeteria that had at least 3 different kinds of meat dishes or a salad. Now I'm working more from the house, (I deserved it after 20 years), so I am not as challenged. I'll try to work on a list of fast food places and restaurants that have some reasonable food.

I'm not sure how much I've lost, but I finally ventured to put on an old pair of jeans and they fit comfortably!!! I have pretty much reached my two week goal, tomorrow i"m heading home, and instead of .."Gee Dana you've packed on some pounds" I'll hear "You've lost weight" I"m not going back off the diet I would still like to lose at least 10 more lbs, but now I know this works, after all my struggling with running everyday and eating next to nothing, I didn't lose a pound, I've finally found something thats easy to do and works!! I"m staying on a moderate carb intake, 20 to 30g a day. I just want to say thankyou, all you guys are an inspiration.. see you in two weeks. Dana

  • A slight miscalculation -- Kel, 07:02:36 08/17/02 Sat
Well for the longest time, I had been weighing myself on my bathroom scale. However, at the same time, I'd been weighing myself on my doctor's scale & on the gym scale at work. The doc's scale and the gym's scale were showing everything from 8-12 lbs difference (upward). I attributed this to my scale probably a little off and it being later in the day when I weighed on the other scales. I didn't really let it bother me because I knew that before the diet, I had ALSO weighed on my bathroom scale, so at least the amount of weight LOST was correct.

Well finally, after hearing me whine over and over about wishing I knew what I really weighed, my mother went out and bought me an expensive accurate scale. Man, this thing is really accurate too. You can step on and off of it like 100 times and it continue to register the same number. The bad news is I'm not 138; I'm actually exactly 10lbs higher than that = 148. This means that I must have been 180 when I first started trying to lose excess weight. Wow, no WONDER I still see fat when I look in the mirror!

Anyway, now that yall know I'm not 138 like I thought I was, I think I'll go make breakfast lol (LC breakfast of course). I have a festival to go to today put on by our city, and I'm allowing myself something if I really want it, but there is no reason to start out the day cheating.

Tomorrow I will be doing better on my plan, and Monday starts a new No Stopping Us 3-Day Challenge. I plan to keep true to each 3-day challenge to the rest of August. I want to make sure I reach my August goal of... well shoot I guess it's 147 now (137 sounded so much better to me lol). Anyway, I've still lost the same amount of weight, so that's something to be happy about. Everyone have a great LC day!
