In reply to: Octobersan 's message, "This isn't an attack and i'm not trying to annoy you. I'm trying to make the point that sugar is AS BAD as heroin! Kel, there are probably 30 people at my work dying from sugar addiction. As a destructive drug, how can you not compare the two? And by the death count, how can you not agree that sugar is far more destructive than heroin. Please tell me why, in your opinon, sugar is not as bad for me as heroin." on 15:04:42 08/25/02 Sun

Don't get me wrong. It is my opinion that both substances are bad for you. It is the degree of badness that I take issue with. I deal with homeless heroin junkies on a daily basis. It is astounding how these individuals remain alive after all the abuse they do to their bodies. They have infected track marks all over them; arms, hands, fingers, in between their toes. They are emaciated, grey in color, shaking and extremely ill. They have a look of intense pain in their faces most of the time, unless they have just recently fixed.

Here are the differences I've observed... I've never seen a sugar addict burglarize someone's home to obtain property to sell so they can buy a Snickers bar. I've never seen a sugar addict go thru physical withdrawels so intense that they involuntarily kick, vomit and convulse as the substance leaves their bodies. I've never seen anyone robbed at gun/knifepoint so the sugar addict can buy a piece of chocolate cake. I've never seen anyone overdose so badly on sugar that it actually results in immediate death. I've never seen entire families destroyed and in such helplessness and pain as those of the heroin addict. I've never seen a sugar addict lose everything; their job, their family, their kids, their home, becoming destitute and desperate over repeated abuse of Klondike bar ingestion. If you've observed any of these problems with any sugar addicts you know, please share. Until then I'm going to stand my ground on this one. I will be reading the "Sugar Blues" book as you suggested and I will comment more when I have finished reading it.
