Subject: The beginning of induction

The first time you do induction is rough. Especially if you keep your carb level really low. The main reason for this is that your body has been used to processing carbs for its energy supply. Therefore you have all the enzymes in your body for processing carbs and they are running around with nothing to do. Your body only produces the enzymes it needs at a particular time and it hasn't yet gotten the message that it needs to build the enzymes for processing fat as fuel.

The amount of time it takes for everyone is different, but eventually your body will switch over and your energy levels will increase.

You are supposed to eat some carbs every day, a salad at least. If you have been going lower than that, you may need to increase it. Get some veggys in your body. Brocolli is a good one, because of the fiber, and vitamins and minerals it contains.

If you are drinking lots and lots of water your ketostix will be lighter in color. Some people never turn them very dark anyway, but not to worry if there is any color at all there you will lose weight.

If this is your first time on Atkins, I would recommend making sure that you take some potassium, some magnesium and some calcium. These minerals are good for your muscles. The potassium particularly gets washed away with all the excess peeing you do on induction, and without enough of these minerals in your body your muscles may begin to react. For me it manifests itself as leg cramps, others have said heart palpitations have happened to them (with the potassium levels lowered). Taking a little potassium will help ward off that feeling (and maybe some of your tiredness as well).

As far as Atkin's bars. I think they have changed due to federal regulations that require them to report all the carbs. Essentially the idea is that these bars do contain more carbs than they used to state. However some parts of what are considered carbs aren't supposed to affect blood sugar levels. Fiber for instance isn't digestible by the body, but is considered a carb. Essentially the way I understand it is that Protein and Fat are measured in foods, and anything that isn't protein and fat is considered to be carbs. This includes sugar, starch, fiber, sugar alcohols, and (in things like yogurt) active cultures which have already consumed the sugars.

Yeasts use sugar to grow. So if you consume something with yeasts in it (like wine or yogurt) you aren't really consuming the sugar because it has already been consumed by the yeasts, however it is still in there in a sense. It doesn't affect your blood sugars in the same way as it would if the yeasts weren't in there. But it has to be accounted for in some way. I don't know if this makes sense or is an actual scientific way of explaining it (or if it is entirely accurate) but it is the way I understand it.

Personally I like the Atkins bars, or at least some of them, but I pretty much avoid them. I noticed the time that I bought a whole box of them and ate maybe 2 a day, I seemed to stall in my weight loss. So I don't use them anymore. They aren't really that good anyway and there are plenty of other things you can use to get your sweet fix. (Plus it is ridiculous what they cost, Dr. A. is definitely in this to make money, and I don't "trust" him in that sense).

Anyway Jill, you are doing well, congrats on your weight loss. Hang in there. If you start to feel too lousy, increase your carb level a little (just a little), and you will feel better (but you may slow down your losses, which is ok in the short term).
