Subject: I used to get chronic bladder infections again & again...
In reply to: Drama 's message, "I have a problem..." on 08:33:34 08/18/02 Sun

I used to get recurring bladder infections that would return as soon as my antibiotic medication ran out. The problem is that my urethra (tube urine goes through) is too narrow, and bacteria would build up in there, causing infections to keep happening. The doctor finally put me on low dose antibiotic therapy for 3 months and the situation seems to have gone into a remission for now. However, if it happens again, he says I will have to have surgery to stretch this narrow tube to a normal width.

One thing that I really like about a moderate-carb diet vs. a low-carb diet, is that you don't have to worry so much about every single pill you put in your mouth screwing up your diet and causing a stall. With 40-50g carbs per day, you don't go into ketosis, but you still lose plenty of weight each week. I can take my medications, including birth control pills & it doesn't seem to affect my weight loss efforts. When I was on Atkins induction, this sort of thing often hampered my efforts just like the book says it will.

I don't so much have a problem with the idea of a 2 week induction, but after that, I think it's much healthier if you follow a moderate-carb plan and it doesn't tax your kidneys as badly either.

Another problem with constant induction-levels of carb intake is diverticulitis. This is a condition in your bowels where pockets will form in their walls (the diverticula), that will cause severe abominal pain. It is often seen in folks who do not regulary get enough fiber & thus their bowels are enduring constant pressure, causing these pockets/abrasions in the wall to form. Once you have this condition, it is something you will have the rest of your life. There are ways of easing the pain thru proper diet, but it never is completely cured. Since the recommended treatment is proper diet, why not just have the proper diet NOW, and prevent the condition in the first place? A moderate-carb plan is usually what is recommended for treatment & prevention of this condition. Hope some of this info has been helpful to you... To your health! Kel

  • Concerning the cranberry juice... Cranberry pills are available at drug stores in the vitamin section. It sounds like you are already drinking the recommended amount of water to use these pills. I've used them before and they work wonders in easing that awful feeling associated w/ bladder infections. Cranberry acid provides a very hostile environment for the bacteria in the bladder. They don't like that environment. If you take these pills, you will usually feel some relief w/in an hour or two. (NT) -- Kel, 09:11:00 08/18/02 Sun
