I agree with you guys. The scale can be a monster, and you can't rely on its results anyway.

I've been up and down with this diet, I've been fatter and thinner, I took my measurements when I first lost fifty pounds, and I've taken them recently. It is amazing to me the difference in size even though the scale only differs by about 3 pounds.

I don't much like measurements because with a body like mine it is hard to tell if you are measuring in the same place every time. A difference of a half inch to an inch can be just a different place that you put the tape.

Once after staying without cheating at all for a whole month, I found I was wearing size sixteen jeans, (which I don't think I can even put on right now though I haven't tried lately), but had only lost a couple of pounds. That discouraged me, and I went off the diet and gained a lot of bulk back, (though not much weight).

To me that was in interesting time, because I really think that the scale was NOT truly reflecting the progress I had made, but I listened to it instead of to my body and clothing.

I truly think the only accurate way of measuring your progress is your clothing. You may have puffy days, and even then your results may be a bit off.

But I weigh every day because I want to know what it is going to say. I want to know if I am retaining water, if I have gained or lost. I TRY and not let what I see there affect me too much. I try and find encouragement (not discouragement) from the scale. If there is only discouragement offered by the scale then I look for other ways to convince myself that I am having success in my efforts.

Sometimes in spite of all contrary evidence, (scale is up, clothing is tight, measurements aren't good) I have to just tell myself that I am ACTUALLY much smaller than this, but that certain times of the month are causing water retention.

Last month I hit a new low of 227, this month a new low of 226. Even though neither weight stayed, and the scale bounced right back up again, the fact that I got there indicates to me that something is working.

Heat, hormones, whether you have been to the bathroom lately or drank a lot of water (or not) all can affect the scale, but YOU KNOW when you have stayed on track and when you haven't. You KNOW when you "deserve" to be thinner and when you don't. The trick is to go by what you know, and only use the other things as a little reinforcement.

  • I know what you mean. When I hit my then all time low of 241, I was able to wear a smaller pair of jeans (but only for a few days), then when I hit 237, I could wear them, but they were still tight. My fat shifts around as my body changes and so much of it is in my stomach now that even though the jeans that I'm wearing are huge I can't fit into smaller ones.
