Subject: What is Cheating?
In reply to: Joe 's message, "What do you consider cheating?" on 06:55:20 05/21/02 Tue

I think that cheating is different for everyone based on your 'plan' and your 'goals'. I think that when you feel guilty eating something, you are probably cheating.. I for one, am on a slightly different plan than most people on here.. i aim for 40-60 grams of carbs a day.. my goals are weight loss, but also health... I believe that with 40-60 grams of carbs a day, a controlled carb diet, i am unable to have the best of both worlds. I can have a square of sugar free chocolate every other day or so and enjoy it, knowing that the 3. g of carbs isn't 'putting me over my limit', I can also enjoy the flavenoids and health benefits of the chocolate.. I can enjoy 8 oz. of sugar free yogurt, knowing that the 8 g. of carbs are supplying my body with calcium and beneficial bacteria... i can enjoy the 6-8 fresh strawberries or 1/2 cup of fresh blueberries and know that my body will benefit from the phytochemicals... I eat red onions and tomatoes almost every day...both higher carb vegetables... i even eat a fresh corn on the cob during the summer... 1/2 cup of black beans increases my fiber and provides a healthy dose of nutrients...
however, I feel guilty when I eat mashed potatoes.. what is my body gaining from that? When I eat processed foods, I feel guilty and i 'know' that I am cheating... I feel guilty when I am starving and the 'only' thing available is white bread... now, I know that isn't true.. i know that i don't have to eat that.. but, i talk myself into it, and then i feel guilty...
so, i guess, basically, i know when I am cheating.. doesn't mean that i don't do it... but, i don't beat myself up when eating healthy and beneficial whole foods, even if they are slightly higher carb than some plans allow...

  • For me cheating is when I eat "carbage". Refined foods with little/no nutritional value. I know that these foods actually cause harm to my system, so I try very hard not to eat them. (NT) -- Katie, 08:53:27 05/22/02 Wed
