Funny, this child identified Baylina as a friend of Cravens, though Bay did not realize this. In fact, the Sarmatian thought that Craven and she were at strict odds with each other, so she did not think the child would have a distorted view of the truth. If Bay had somehow managed to gain favor with the king –well that was unexpected and unknown to her. The fact remained that Bay knew nothing of Craven, his people, or anything that lingered and shadowed the walls of the castle in which she now resided. At the moment, she did not question it, knowing that in time she would come to understand the reasons these people acted as they did, the reason they considered Baylina an outcast –someone unworthy to be within the Roman borders.

Nitasha’s question was a bit off the wall, but she had asked it in a straightforward, easy to understand manner, and Baylina looked at her thoughtfully. How could she answer in a way that the child could comprehend? Lyra had always known the meanings of the things Bay had ever told her, but on the other hand, Lyra had been about four years older too. Someone as young as Nitasha would be hard to teach, or even explain such things to.

“My people taught me. Both women and men learn how to fight…and to kill.” Baylina glanced down at her two unique weapons, both identical in size and shape. Without a word, she removed one from her side, and held it out to the girl for her to see it if she wished. The wooden frame felt weightless in Bay’s hand, and she could feel the razor edge against the leather on her hand. “I trained hard to learn how to use these.” Bay said quietly. She watched the girl like a hawk, almost as if she was judging the girl based on her next actions –Bay was looking for one specific reaction, one that could change the child’s future...
