I haven't read either article, but I'm not sure people always understand copyright/plagiarism issues. Plagiarism is when you copy someone else's original text word for word. A copyright is the official ownership of an original work in fixed form, i.e., paper (hard copy), audio or video tape, disk. A copyright does not exist on ideas (so if two parties write an article about the same topic, it is not considered plagiarized), nor does it exist on facts (so if two articles use or quote the same statistics, facts, dates, etc, those facts, statistics, etc are not plagiarized.) If you use facts to write a book or article, that text of the book or article is your copyrighted material (assuming it's an original work), and you own the work, but not the facts used.
All complete work in fixed form is considered copyrighted for purposes of ownership. You may register with the LOC for a fee. The registration does not make it "more yours", but it is necessary before you file an infringement suit.
I know this may get bumped to the bottom, but it may be worth reading if you're writing a book or article. And if you're writing a screenplay, keep your mouth shut. It's a whole different ballgame there.

You on this board can't take it. Hurley is in your head. He drives you all crazy and you say the dumbest things. Everone knows that The Press has stolen Hurley's works for years. You can write your junk, you know, the Rusty, Tony and the rest of the drunks, but the truth is the truth.
