Casinos, racetracks are at odds in N.J.
Video slots at center of gambling dispute
    Associated Press
    02/23/2003

Competition for Atlantic City's casinos is on the way, regardless of whether video gambling terminals are placed at the Meadowlands Racetrack, the state's Democratic senate leader said.

"I understand the casinos' opposition, but what happens when New York and Philadelphia put them in?" Democratic Senate President Richard Codey told The Press of Atlantic City. "We can't put our heads in the sand. I think casinos have to work with the state and the Legislature and say, 'What's a reasonable compromise?' "

Codey leads a group of northern New Jersey lawmakers who support racetrack terminals, essentially slot machines, as a way to raise funds for the ailing horse-racing industry.

Carl Golden, spokesman for the Casino Association of New Jersey, said casinos did $76 million in business last year with firms in Codey's Essex County, and another $20 million in Bergen County, which is represented by video terminal supporter state Sen. Garry Furnari, also a Democrat.

"Presumably, the two senators are willing to risk almost $100 million in combined business in their counties in the interest of putting VLTs at racetracks," Golden said.

Gov. Jim McGreevey wants to boost state gambling revenue by installing racetrack VLTs and increasing casino taxes.

Under his plan, the tax on gross gambling revenue would go from 8 percent to 10 percent. A 6 percent sales tax on casino complimentaries, and possibly a 7 percent hotel occupancy tax, would be added.

State Sen. Bill Gormley, R-Atlantic, and the casino association say McGreevey is using the tax threat as a bargaining chip to get VLTs at state racetracks.

McGreevey formed a commission to study the economic and legal issues surrounding video terminals. The commission, criticized by Atlantic City casino interests for its predominance of northern New Jersey members, will soon get another South Jersey member.

The seven-person commission now has only one southern New Jersey member, Linda Kassekert, who chairs the Casino Control Commission.

Furnari, whose legislative district is home to Meadowlands Racetrack, said "VLTs are coming to this area regardless of whether New Jersey or Atlantic City stand in their way."

Here is what happened, I went to turn off a light and the wall switch felt warm. I asked two friends who are electricians to give advice and repair it.

That was a week ago. Last night,I noticed that the area was still hot.

This morning,I bit the bullet and called MAINLINE ELECTRIC. They came out within a couple of hours, and the guy (RON) was here all afternoon testing the wires and he even called for a second opinion because there was something really wrong with the wiring. YES-MAINLINE is expensive, but, I have to give them credit, They answer their phone. They show-up. AND even though, cost is a concern, this guy was not going to leave untill he was satisfied that my family was safe. (yes,it was a fire-hazard).

I also recieved some expert advice on lighting, because I am trying to "phase-out" the 100 watt light bulbs. Recommended was the newer "electronic" flourescent (sp?),which use less electricity and are "as bright as daylight." (and no radio-interference like the other kind of fluorecent bulbs)-or that "flicker"-or that "eeerie wierd kind of light" annoyance.

CENDANT'S FAIRFIELD RESORTS AND TRUMP ATLANTIC CITY CASINO RESORTS ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC MARKETING ALLIANCE
NEW YORK, N.Y. and ATLANTIC CITY, N.J 11-13-2002 -- November 13, 2002 – Cendant Corporation (NYSE:CD) announced today that its unit, Fairfield Resorts, Inc., the world's largest vacation ownership company with more than 450,000 owners, has signed a new exclusive strategic marketing alliance with three Atlantic City Trump hotel casinos. The agreement marks Trump's first entry into the rapidly expanding timeshare industry, and will provide Fairfield Resorts with exclusive Atlantic City sales and marketing locations to support vacation ownership interval sales of Fairfield's newly acquired Skyline Tower timeshare resort.

In early 2003, Fairfield will begin marketing activities at each of Trump's Atlantic City hotel casino locations, including the Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza and Trump Marina, through a variety of channels including on-site kiosks, in-room programs and co-branded promotions. In addition, Fairfield will construct and operate a 10,000 square-foot sales center at the Trump Taj Mahal to preview its nationwide resorts, including ownership at Fairfield's Skyline Tower resort, located nearby.

The new alliance is expected to boost leisure travel to Atlantic City and provide incremental guest generation and casino traffic at Trump properties in the region. Fairfield, which markets vacation ownership products at resort properties in 18 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands, will offer consumers attractive Atlantic City travel packages, including hotel stays and entertainment offers at Trump locations. Current Fairfield owners, many of whom permanently reside in the eastern U.S., may also soon enjoy the option of using their points-based FairShare Plus ownership to secure room accommodations at Atlantic City Trump casino hotels, based on availability.

"We're pleased to partner with Fairfield Resorts, the leading player in the rapidly growing timeshare industry," said Donald J. Trump, Chairman of Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, Inc.(THCR) "Timeshare owners are not only some of the most resilient leisure travelers, but typically spend more on gaming and entertainment during their vacations. We believe that increasing our exposure among timeshare owners will greatly benefit our business."

"Fairfield is proud to partner with Trump's hotel casino resorts in Atlantic City, as we believe this new alliance will provide tremendous opportunities to jointly build our brands among new clientele," said Franz S. Hanning, president and CEO, Fairfield Resorts. "We look forward to enabling our prospective and current owners to enjoy the excitement of Atlantic City at exceptional Trump locations, while introducing thousands more to the benefits of vacation ownership with Fairfield Resorts."

"New Jersey is the only state on the East Coast that has an industry to protect in terms of casino gambling. Nobody wants to see that harmed. But other states see it as a revenue opportunity and they don't care about New Jersey," he said.

  • Do You Think Lousy, Biased Reporting May Be The Reason the Print Media is Tanking? -- rujane, 15:19:24 02/22/03 Sat

Just listened to another 1 1/2 hrs on the transplant case, and considering the anti-physician, anti-tort reform bias most newspapers take, it's no wonder they're tanking. (The SF Examiner has just laid off most of its staff). One caller said that, apparently, the initial clerical error most likely did not even occur at Duke, but at the sending hospital. Phrases like "botched surgery", which implied that the medical care at Duke was at fault, and stories which deliberately omitted the illegal status of the family, attempted to characterize this as a malpractice story. Fortunately for us, we are not left to the three big networks and the all-the-news-that-fits, print! media to get the truth. Both a physician and transplant patient called in (1210 AM) refuting the misinformation. And another thing that came out is that the girl was apparently under 90 pounds, so the organs she received would most likely have been targeted for a child/preteen, since the weight/size of organs is a consideration. There's some malpractice here, but I don't think it's medical.

Did anyone hear the caller to PINKY who tried to float some BS about SLOT MACHINES (VLTS) at racetracks in NJ?

PINKY let him speak, the caller tried to use the argument that PHILLY,NYC, MARYLAND...could all have gaming in the near future, and "...shouldn't we get a jump on the competition..." (and keep gaming money in NJ), trying to say that NJ could lose gamblers to other states if we don't spread it out "closer to the borders" of other states???

PINKY-FLAT-OUT,said to the caller, (it sounded like FORKIN-but it couldn't have been, could it?)(something like)"How would That help ATLANTIC CITY?".....

    IT WOULD NOT!

I wonder what the rest of the people in NJ would think about this way of trying to put SLOT MACHINES at racetracks???

I wonder if the people in the rest of NJ would care that BRENDAN BRYNE who is on the commitee that is studying the idea of SLOT MACHINES at racetracks, is on The Board of Directors of Mack-Cali,the company that just recieved approval to re-develop The Meadowlands????? ....

Is that is the best that "THEY" can do as far trying to promote a "need" for SLOT MACHINES-(VLTS-also known as THE CRACK COCAINE OF GAMING),at racetracks?

  • Two ideas to put $$$ in NJ budget -- talkonline, 08:11:39 02/21/03 Fri
The first one was brought up on PINKY'S show. GIFT CERTIFICATES. When someone does not use a gift certificate, shouldn't it go to the UNCLAIMED FUNDS of the state???? PINKY discussed this at length one day. I have no idea, what the total $$ amount is on gift certificates that do not get used is, but after hearing PINKyS show that day,I think that it is quite a lot of money that ,if the certificates do not get redeemed, does the $$ really belong to the store that took the money?????

The second is EBAY, I have heard that New Jersey is THE biggest user of EBAY. I have also heard that 40 states (don't know if NJ is in one),are working together to devise a way of collecting taxes from EBAY transactions. OK so- it might not be a big deal if I sell my beannie baby collection, but there is big business in online sales. Not only that, but online businesses don't have to worry about shoplifters, trip & fall lawsuits, and they can wear pajamas to work. If everyone else has to pay sales tax, ??????

Normally, I wouldn't open my big mouth about loopholes like this, but with the clock ticking on VLTs,(slot machines at racetracks),?????

Odds may be in gov's favor on video lottery

    Thursday, February 20, 2003

This is a tale of two commissions.

They could be subtitled Irony and Urgency, but both are about money: to provide local property tax relief, to improve horse racing in New Jersey and to nourish budget-starved state programs.

Democratic Albio Sires is a two-time player - first as mayor of West New York, and now as Assembly speaker.

Republican Gov. Christie Whitman appointed Sires to her Property Tax Commission in December 1997. Ten months later, that commission made 59 recommendations; most of them were ignored, but one would allow urban-aid qualified communities to levy parking, entertainment, hotel and motel taxes for "direct tax relief to property taxpayers."

As speaker, Sires endorses a 7 percent luxury tax on hotel and motel rooms, but not just in urban aid communities. Still to be introduced, the proposal is projected to raise $120 million that would be split between the state, the counties and local municipalities. Under the commission recommendation, county tax boards would allow the hotel revenue as a "property tax credit toward the total property tax" in each community. The proposal has drawn the support of the State League of Municipalities.

Municipalities, in addition to their share of the proposed hotel tax, are also expecting a 7.7 percent municipal aid increase recommended Feb. 4 by Gov. James E. McGreevey for the fiscal year starting July 1.

Thus, Whitman's tax commission could help bail out the money-desperate McGreevey, never at a loss of words for policies of his Republican predecessor.

McGreevey got into the commission game himself Feb. 10, appointing an eight-member panel to study the feasibility of installing video lottery terminals at the state's horse racing tracks.

Former Democratic Gov. Brendan T. Byrne heads the panel, which is expected to submit its recommendations in May - which would presumably allow enough time for the Legislature to set in motion a plan to install the video lottery terminals before the June 30 summer budget recess, which would raise a projected $200 million in fiscal 2004.

But critics - notably Sen. William A. Gormley, R-Atlantic - maintain video lottery terminals are an extension of gambling and must be approved by voters in a referendum under the state constitution, which currently limits games of skill where a player wins or loses money to within Atlantic City only.

McGreevey is looking for all the budget money he can find, so to get this $200 million he will have to rely on a 1982 opinion from the state attorney general that ruled slot machines in the Atlantic City casinos are a game of "skill," but video lotteries a game of "chance."

The distinction between the two could allow McGreevey to put the lottery terminals in racetracks without legislative approval, and on Jan. 16, Sen. Joseph Suliga, D-Middlesex, introduced a bill that would establish video lotteries at the Meadowlands Race Track in East Rutherford, Freehold Raceway and Monmouth Park Race Course, all operated by the state's Sports and Exposition Authority.

    He still faces opposition, however.

On Feb. 10, Gormley said McGreevey's budget plan to increase the casino revenue tax from 8 to 10 percent, and impose a 6 percent sales tax on casino complimentaries, was doomed. Gormley also bad-mouthed the 7 percent hotel luxury tax.

Such narrow thinking suggests only Atlantic City would flourish - hardly a tenable position if Gormley seeks the Republican gubernatorial nomination in three years.

Sires could emerge as his enemy at the gate in 2005.

A marine truck came by and picked up my husband so he could get into the hospital. I do hope the same people who objected to the doctors holding a demonstration will show comparable appreciation for what many of them had to do to get to work today.
We got 18" or more. Bad drifts. In OC, the 9th Street Bridge is closed. Flooding south of 34th Street, 34th Street Bridge is open, but my husband said he heard talk about "closing the island". Cross streets are difficult - West Ave is probably the best. 24th Street is the only cross street between 20th and 34th street that's passable, the rest of the side streets are unplowed. A team of truck owners are volunteering to shuttle essential personnel to Burdette and Shore Hospitals, God bless 'em.

In researching the idea of A split between North & South Jersey, I became aware of an interesting fact. New Jersey WAS split in half at one eary point and then united in a constitution (WEST JERSEY CONCESSIONS) by WILLIAM PENN.

Not only that, but the "constitution" which has been stored in TRENTON somewhere, is being hailed as a blueprint for The Constitution of The Unted States of America. Yesterday, this NJ document was placed on display in PHILLY along with THE MAGNA-CARTA STORY CLICK HERE...........

While watching a story on this on Philadelphia News station last night,I happened to catch a glimpse of a map of the original BOUNDRY LINE, EAST JERSEY/WEST JERSEY. The WEST JERSEY line crosses over all the way to the ATLANTIC OCEAN somewhere north of ATLANTIC COUNTY.

Today, THE PRESS OF ATLANTIC CITY published a letter that asks if SOUTH JERSEY should say "good-bye" to NORTH JERSEY? (something that more than one person is asking, including myself).........OR-maybe should we just go back to being WEST JERSEY?

New Jersey Panel to Study VLT Feasibility
    by Linda Dougherty
    Date Posted: 2/5/03 4:29:38 PM
    Last Updated: 2/5/03 4:29:38 PM

New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey has announced the creation of a Video Lottery Study Commission that will investigate the feasibility of video lottery terminals at racetracks and give him written recommendations in 90 days.
McGreevey is said to be considering VLTs in part to plug a huge budget deficit without having to raise taxes. Though no horsemen were appointed to the committee, George Zoffinger, chief executive officer and president of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, was named as a member.

The commission is made up of seven other members: Former Gov. Brendan Byrne (chairman); Linda Kassekert, chair of the Casino Control Commission; Peter Harvey, Attorney General designate; Susan Cole, president of Montclair State University; Chris Bollwage, mayor of Elizabeth and president of the New Jersey League of Municipalities; James Dieterle, executive director of the New Jersey Chapter of AARP; and Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo, a professor of law at Seton Hall University.

When asked why no horsemen were appointed, Ellen Mellody, a spokesperson for the governor's office, said: "Gov. McGreevey chose to appoint individuals that have the utmost integrity, strong leadership skills and diverse backgrounds."

While Francis "Bud" Keegan, president of the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, called the committee creation a "positive step" in bringing VLTs to racetracks, one of the staunchest allies of the Atlantic City casino industry had strong words for McGreevey's action.

"VLTs are never going to happen," vowed Sen. Bill Gormley, who represents Atlantic County, where the casinos are located. "All they'll do is cause instability for the casinos and hurt jobs in New Jersey. This committee will do nothing but waste (former) Gov. Byrne's time."

An Atlanic City Business Owner is being accused of the following: A-Not being a citizen of the US,but,Recieving funds through the CRDA, and government Small Buisness Money to open a new buisness. A delivery person for a major local company, was visiting this store, as part of his route.

The owner of the business, asked the delivery person what his religion is. Then the store owner said that he did NOT like that religion, and that that delvery person was not allowed to come to his store. The owner of the company that the driver works for put the delivery driver on another route, far away from his regular friends and customers. a complaint was filed with the driver's union, but so far nothing has been done-(except for changing the driver's route to an off-shore location, after he has been working the AC route for years and years.)

You are probably wondering WHY,I left out some of the details. This is a true story, does it matter WHAT RELIGION the driver is or what country the business owner is from? I will post those particulars in the message below. I'm hoping that the driver's complaints are being investigated-and maybe something will be done about this ,so,I'm purposely leaving out some details. But,from the report that I heard, the driver is stating to feel like the change of the route will be his only remedy.

I did not find anything that ties the CRDA to this business, but I was told that "everybody knows" that the CRDA had something to do with the new buisness. (it rings a bell-but I can't find anything for sure yet)

I know this is may be regionally incorrect, but I am tired of Atlantic City issues. I'm tired of hearing the whining and defensive praise about a city that many decent people would not enter unaccompanied. Culture? Who avails himself of anything outside of the casinos. Free beaches? Not when you have to spend $$$ to park. Ambience? Shopping? Safety? Don't get me started. Other than the advantage of some reasonably priced sports events (the Bullies and the Surf), there is no reason I can think of that one would opt for AC for a family outing over the Cape May County or downbeach areas.
And I get sooooooo fed up when radio callers try to talk about something other than AC issues and are told that AC "drives" the area, then told NOT to talk about AC issues because they don't live there. I've seen charts. Atlantic City is not the center of the universe.

'Xanadu' wins sports chief's backing for Meadowlands

Mills Corp. vows agency will get millions in income

    Wednesday, February 12, 2003

    BY MATTHEW FUTTERMAN
    Star-Ledger Staff

George Zoffinger, chief executive at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, today will recommend his agency select the Mills Corp./Mack-Cali Realty Corp. partnership to transform the Continental Airlines Arena site into the region's top retail and family entertainment destination.

According to senior officials in Gov. James E. McGreevey's administration, the $1.2 billion Mills/Mack-Cali plan, called "Xanadu," beat two competitors by promising to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars for the debt-laden agency, the state and municipalities in southern Bergen County. Mills and Mack-Cali will also donate nearly 600 acres of sensitive wetlands and contribute $65 million to bring mass transit to the sports complex in East Rutherford.

"We're talking about a lot of money here," one of the administration officials said. "This is big."

Zoffinger and Bob Sommer, a spokesman for Xanadu, declined comment yesterday.

The selection of Xanadu, which is likely to be approved by the sports authority's 13-member board of commissioners at this morning's monthly meeting, is a major triumph for the Virginia-based Mills Corp. It ends the company's decade-long, $100 million quest to build a major retail and entertainment destination in the Meadowlands region.

Xanadu will feature North America's first indoor skiing facility; Underwater World, a state-of-the-art aquarium that re-creates a walk on the ocean floor; four office towers built by Cranford-based Mack-Cali; and more than 1 million square feet of high-fashion retail and restaurants.

For the sports authority, the redevelopment will represent a watershed moment in the evolution of the 31-year-old agency that also operates Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport and three South Jersey convention centers.

Robert Mulcahy, the sports authority's former chief executive, first suggested adding entertainment and retail venues to the 750-acre complex in 1994 as a way to bring more revenue to the money-losing agency. The plans languished for a decade, however, until Zoffinger began spearheading the redevelopment project shortly after taking office last March.

The 4.5 million-square-foot Xanadu marks the first major alterations to the complex since Continental Airlines Arena opened in 1981. Construction around the 104-acre arena site is expected to begin this summer.

Under the current plan, the Nets and Devils will leave the Continental Arena in 2005 or 2006 for a proposed arena in downtown Newark. That would clear the way for Mills and Mack-Cali to demolish the arena or convert the building into a convention center or performance space.

However, Mills and Mack-Cali have said Xanadu can accommodate an arena for the Nets and Devils if the teams decide to stay.

Xanadu faced its stiffest competition from Secaucus-based Hartz Mountain Industries and its partner, Forest City Ratner Cos. of New York.

The Hartz/Forest City team, led by Hartz president Emanuel Stern, proposed building a convention center, office and entertainment complex called Expo Park. Despite an aggressive advertising campaign, the Expo Park plan got a late start.

Hartz spent the summer negotiating to become a partner with Mills. Those talks broke down in September, just two weeks before proposals were due, forcing Hartz to scramble to develop its own plan for the site.

Then, last month, after the Giants joined the Mills/Mack-Cali team, Stern felt his proposal's chances slipping away and decided to launch a campaign attacking Xanadu as a megamall in disguise. The campaign included full-page newspaper advertisements and a controversial video made at a Mills mall in Maryland that was sent to legislators.

The tape prompted a vigorous debate over traffic and the amount of retail on the site, but it also angered Zoffinger and, according to the governor's advisers, annoyed McGreevey.

A third bid from the Westfield Corp. of Los Angeles proposed turning the arena into a 2,000- to 6,000-seat performance space surrounded by restaurants and an office complex.

While Xanadu has received endorsements from several of North Jersey's leading politicians, including state Assembly Speaker Albio Sires (D-Hudson) and Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney, the proposal is not without its critics.

"I think all three applicants presented something much too big for the site," said former state Sen. Raymond Bateman, a sports authority commissioner and frequent critic of Zoffinger. "There are going to be real traffic problems."

Sires speaks of tax hike, governor won't - yet

    Thursday, January 16, 2003

Assembly Speaker Albio Sires, who is also the mayor of West New York, stands today as a minority of one.

But he could have unwelcome company by the end of June if the Democrats are budget desperate enough. On Dec. 27, Sires expressed support for a "soak-the-rich" income tax increase. One proposal - not necessarily Sires' - would raise $600 million over three years for municipal or school aid assistance. Sires is concerned about frozen municipal and school aid again - this time in a legislative election year.

Commented Sires: "That's something I would look at. We have to be open."

However, Gov. James E. McGreevey recently ruled out increases in the sales and state income taxes.

"I think we all know that the governor stated he is not in favor of an income tax increase. We appreciate the speaker's willingness to look at every option. But that is not a proposal we're considering. I want to make it clear it is not something that's on the table," said McGreevey spokesman Micah Rasmussen.

The McGreevey administration is still facing a grand canyon budget shortage - in June it was $6 billion - now it's down to $4 billion.

The prospect of an income tax increase in the upper brackets could be worked to the Democrats advantage - at least theoretically. Republican legislators opposing it could be charged with forcing property tax increases.

McGreevey will outline his next budget on Feb. 3.

But McGreevey and George Zoffinger, executive director of the state Sports and Exposition Authority, are looking at a back-door approach to new revenue from a different source.

The authority recently authorized a study on the effect video lottery terminals would have on the state's horse racing industry.

The video terminals would be located at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, Monmouth Park, Atlantic City Racecourse and Freehold Raceway to increase the purses and counter competition from tracks in New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

They also could have an impact on the budget.

"The issues are going to be what is necessary to save the horse racing industry," Zoffinger said, "what is the impact on Atlantic City, and what are the political and the social hurdles that would need to be overcome to reach such a conclusion?"

The Atlantic City casino industry bristled with hostility.

Sen. William Gormley, R-Atlantic, known as "Casino Bill," says video lottery terminals at the tracks would threaten future investment in Atlantic City, where billions of dollars are gambled legally every year in slot machines.

"We're not going to allow people to make light of the New Jersey Constitution," said Gormley.

He referred to private thinking in the McGreevey administration that an obscure 1982 attorney general's legal opinion makes a distinction between games of chance and games of skill.

According to the ruling, games of skill are those in which players exert some control over winning or losing only in Atlantic City. Voters approved casinos there in 1978.

A player at the slot machine pushes a button to determine the outcome of the game, and that is viewed as a game of skill under the 1982 opinion.

Video lottery terminals operate when a player puts money in the machine and its computer determines a series of numbers. That's called a game of chance.

    What legalistic nonsense.

The nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services said recently the video lottery question should be placed before the voters in a state referendum. Any gambling, or expansion of gambling, can be done only by voters' approval under the New Jersey Constitution.

Zoffinger and McGreevey are trying an end-run around the Constitution.

But Sires, the income-tax-increase advance man, is facing a formidable wall of opposition within and outside his Democratic Party, as talk of property tax increases continue to heat up. It could be a red-hot issue by the Nov. 4 election.

Sports authority board brings two empty seats to the table

    Sunday, February 9, 2003

    By JOHN BRENNAN
    Staff Writer

The absence of Meadowlands-area members isn't the only quirk in the usually anonymous board of directors for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.

For instance, the board has 14 seats but only 12 members. All members are unsalaried, but are entitled to recoup expenses.

The vacancies were created when the 14th seat was added in 2001 - and never filled - and by the departure of Republican Peter Sudler, whose term expired last year.

Governor McGreevey nominated Fred Potter, an Ocean County Democratic leader, for one of the vacant seats in December, but the nomination has been held up by Sens. Leonard Connors and Bob Singer - both Ocean Republicans.

The two are granted such power as home-county senators under the chamber's courtesy rules.

Asked recently if Potter could be advanced in time to participate in the crucial board vote, Singer paused and said, "Anything can happen."

McGreevey has not yet nominated a 14th member, waiting instead for action on Potter's nomination.

Eleven of the 14 seats are set aside for members of the public, who are appointed for four years by the governor. The other three seats are reserved for automatic members who serve by virtue of their official positions.

The NJSEA president (currently George Zoffinger), a representative of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (Susan Bass Levin, the agency's chairwoman), and the state treasurer (John E. McCormac) are the automatic members.

The empty seats leave the board evenly split between Republican and Democratic appointees.

Former NJSEA Chairman Joseph Buckelew - a Republican - has worked closely with Zoffinger for the past year, however, and several board members said they didn't expect an arena redevelopment vote to go strictly along party lines.

The three public members appointed by McGreevey in 2002 - Joseph Forgione, Marvin Schmelzer, and board Chairman Carl Goldberg - all have extensive real estate backgrounds, as does Zoffinger. Those four make up the selection committee, and presumably would give the recommended choice four of the seven votes it needs for the board's endorsement.

On the Republican side, Vice Chairwoman Candy Straight is an investment banker who ran unsuccessfully in November for Essex County executive, and Raymond H. Bateman ran against Brendan Byrne in the New Jersey gubernatorial race in 1977. Most of the other appointees have little experience in public office.

Former Olympic track star Joetta Clark Diggs is the daughter of former Paterson's Eastside High School Principal Joe Clark. Barbara Sobel and her husband, Clifford, have been among the leading donors to the New Jersey Republican Party.

Board members serve four-year terms and can be reappointed an unlimited number of times.

"We've had important votes before, but nothing of this magnitude," Bateman said of the arena redevelopment vote. "This is uncharted territory."

*************************************************************the story @ hh.com that led me to this writer at the Bergen Record who covers NJSEA news, says that local (Bergen County Democrats),wrote to McGreevy asking that Barbra Sobel be dismissed from the board because she does not live in the United States. They (local Dems),also wrote (according to the latest),asking that the seat be filled by a local (North Jersey) resident.

Well, that is not true, and it has been called to FORKIN'S attention-(I hope) that The Meadowlands has plans for a TON of overnight guests.

Tomorrow-(Wednesday),A selection between the remaining bidders on the proposed Meadowlands project is supposed to be revealed.

There is opposition to announcing a "winner". A State lawmaker has called for a HALT because he says that "open public bidding" and other state regulations have not been followed.

ZOFFINGER (head of NJSEA) says that the winner will be announced tomorrow as planned and the project construction will begin.

Three players seem to remain as candidates. MILLS project-took out a full page ad in THE STAR LEDGER announcing that they will be doing the project (XANADU). HARTZ-MOUNTAIN/FORREST CITY RATNER (combined) looks like the #2 candidate.

It has been said that HARTZ-MOUNTAIN has produced an anti-XANADU video. It has also been said-(last week) that MIILS,HARTZ-MOUNTAIN and FORREST CITY,were offered a deal last week to "All work together".

I have looked at all of the proposed developments,it looks like a great idea- BUT are they counting on SLOT MACHINES???? COULD the offer to have them all work together be an attempt to make sure that the "loser" dosen't TELL ALL about any promises made regarding SLOT MACHINES????-I wonder if the recent UPRISING FROM ATLANTIC CITY will have any effect on the plans?????

Lawmaker says McGreevey's gambling plans 'will not pass'

    Tuesday, February 11, 2003

Atlantic City's leading legislative casino advocate told investors yesterday that Gov. James E. McGreevey's plans to raise casino taxes and put slot-like gambling machines at the Meadowlands Racetrack are "dead."

"Every one of the governor's (casino) proposals will not pass," Sen. Bill Gormley (R-Atlantic) said. "I just want to lead off on that so investors know that."

The investor conference call was hosted by Marc Falcone, managing director of Deutsche Bank Securities, to discuss McGreevey's proposals to raise the casino revenue tax from 8 to 10 percent, impose a tax on casino complimentaries and install video lottery terminals -- or VLTs -- at the Meadowlands.

Gormley said McGreevey was trying to use the tax proposals as a bargaining chip to force the casinos to accept the VLT plan, and that the governor or his aides have been calling casino executives "to offer them a trade."

"He has denied the conversations took place, but they did," Gormley said.

Gormley said the casino trade group, the Casino Association, is preparing a full-blown attack, including mobilizing the industry's 50,000 employees, an advertising blitz and a series of newspaper editorial board meetings. The association also has hired a lobbyist, the Marcus Group.

Dennis Gomes, the association's president, said the group has not formalized a budget to fight McGreevey's proposals, but said "it's going to be significant."

    To all visitors,
This issue is so serious that I think that it is time for a TRUCE on this board. If it is possible, I am attempting to make most "nasty" or personal comments, invisible for the time being.

I'm not sure if this will work out,(as far as this board is concerned) but, what I am planning is devoting this forum exclusively to news and discussion of the proposed slot machines and Governor McGreevy's budget,as it would affect this area.

The present state of this forum is a liability to the cause that I would like to devote this discussion to for now.

There is a lot of "dirty laundry" here (still), and I'd like to invite people here to discuss the topic that I have stated. I am not comfortable doing that if there is a chance that some of the ugly stuff that has happened here before, will happen while we have company!.

Thank-you to everyone who visits, and too the people who took the time to request passwords to contribute. What I am thinking,is to put the board on "moderated" status, which would allow, anyone to post a message, but it would only be visible after being approved. I do not know if VOY DOT COM will add the feature, that would allow certain "approved" people to post messages instantly-(instead of holding for approval)-moderated status

As far as a TIME-FRAME? I don't know about that??? How long could it take to get satisfaction on this? (not very long,I hope),BUT to be safe,I would like to keep this board strictly moderated for at least a two-week period. After that? (or however long it takes), maybe we could resume the usual, meaning less restrictions, and visitors would have to decide for themselves if they want to continue to visit. LOCAL TALK RADIO- would still be "on topic"???....I don't know how it will work really, but I really want to try devoting this page to the SLOT MACHINE THREAT

Argh...our Governor is a jerk; I cannot believe how so many people in our state voted for him. He is now saying that he is going to keep his "promise" of not raising state income or sales tax but how will he get the money to fund the NJ SUI/SDI Fund that he is AGAIN borrowing money from? In 2002, about $99 went to NJ Unemployment Insurance and roughly, $118 went to NJ Disability Insurance. Each year there is a maximum amount that each individual pays into these funds, which I stated above. If the funds continue to be depleted the NJ SUI/SDI taxes will surely have to increase to cover his "loans" and when he does raise our tax he will still be able to keep his "promise" of not raising sales and income tax.

What a liar! In addition, why in the hell does it cost the state $1million to keep a rest stop open in Cape May County? I am specifically talking about the Howard Stern rest stop, from what I heard on Howard today, the state would save $1million if they close it due to the 23-person workforce that is used to keep it operational. The funny thing is, if you really have to go to the bathroom and pull over (this only applies to guys) on the side of the road you'll probably get a ticket, so therefore you will still be paying to PEE! How funny is that?

THIS is what I would do RIGHT NOW,if I was a casino and I had a horse-betting parlor. I would STOP TAKING BETS FOR NJ RACETRACKS. TODAY. AND, I would continue to stop taking bets untill they (the racetracks) stop all of this NONSENSE. I am willing to BET that AC casinos pull-in more bets than at the actual track windows.

  • NJ State Council On The ARTS -- talkonline, 19:22:04 02/04/03 Tue
I will post below,a copied version of all grants awarded for finacial year 2003 to arts organizations. I found it at www.njartscouncil.org.

If McGreevy has his way,and The State council on the Arts recieves zero financial support, the groups that recieved $$ this year, will not get a cent from the state next year.

The following,is not an audit,or even a budget for the state council on the Arts, I presume that zillions of our tax dollars go to pay the salaries and fringe benifits of the administration of The State council on The ARTS>

    The Governor's Budget Message will be re-broadcast tonight @ 10pm on NJN-(channel 8 where I am).

The ENTIRE budget for The State Council on the ARTS in NJ -GONE! (If McGREEVY has his way.)

Watching ROGER BODMAN give the REPUBLICAN response,he calls McGREEVY'S budget proposals: "...CATASTROPHIC...". The DEM.response says that if NJ recieved more Federal $$,????.

MCGREEVY is really starting to look like a LAME-DUCK!

  • Website:"Take Back The Media",claims success in LIMBAUGH Advertiser Boycott -- talkonline, 03:54:30 02/04/03 Tue
This group,TAKE back the Media Dot Com (click here)is claiming to have correspondence and agreements with MOST of RUSH LIMBAUGH'S National advertisers.

This is the first that I've heard of this, but,if it's true,....what does this say about a few people being able to force someone to shut-up? Especially in TALK RADIO?????

A few weeks ago,it seemed like EVERY host, from RUSH,to,SAVAGE,and even our LOCALS (we know who they are),AND even the CALLERS!(they know who they are),were ALL spouting the company line to people who called-in with anti- or even ambivilant statements about a possible WAR. It was like a memo went out that said something like "Anyone who is not 100% pro-war,and says anything about it or questions a war, will be immediately called every name in the book starting with "UN-AMERICAN."-(hey!-them's fighting words!)...and God help them if they actually protest!

........anyhow,this take back the media group, has decided to make an example of RUSH, and they report that they have really done some damage.

Like I said, I really don't know that much about it,but,if you like RUSH LIMBAUGH, and you don't like the idea of having his sponsors being pressured like this, go buy some BLUE EMU stuff!(c'mon-you've been wanting to try it right?).....according to the story that I've heard so far,the folks at BLUE EMU,said that they will stick with RUSH during this "painfull" time.

Whoever this group is, I don't think that I like it's tactics. WHY NOT LET THE LISTENERS DECIDE? Instead of trying to make RUSH stop talking?????? DO THEY THINK THAT AMERICANS WHO LISTEN TO TALK RADIO CAN'T MAKE-UP THEIR OWN MINDS?

Personally,I didn't like or agree with all of that "un-American" stuff. I think that some people just have their doubts about a war, BUT, RUSH and others are right in pointing out facts about certain organizations (left-wing?),that are jumping on the peace-train.

What exactly don't they (Take Back The Media) want us to hear?

For the second time,JIM BoHANNON has given NASA credit for bringing BAR CODES to the world. That strikes a nerve with me 'cause, from the way I remember it,BAR CODES were invented ON THE BEACH-(actually lines drawn in the sand),by a man in VENTNOR CITY NJ (celebrating VENTNOR'S 100th year btw!)....yeah-there is info. about this online somewhere, maybe I can find a link.

Btw,I actually got to work with the SPACE SHUTTLE program while temping in the media relations department @ AT&T executive HQ. My temporary boss was in charge of the phone service where you could call a phone # and listen to the astronauts. We watched a take-off in his office and it was really fun!

Once we made a phone call to mission control with some friends to volunteer for a mission when they were recruiting civilians. We spoke to a guy named "ROCKY",he was really nice and explained that they were looking for a teacher for the first civilian in space, then he told us that he was one of the few people who do the actual "countdown" ,we asked him to demonstrate a countdown and he did!-lucky thing that we did not get on board that flight-The CHALLENGER.

Two years later I watched it live on CNN that morning and it hit me like a ton of bricks

It will not only erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of your computer. It demagnetizes the strips on ALL of your credit cards. It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt to play. It will program your phone auto dial to call only 1-800 numbers. This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank.
IT WILL CAUSE YOUR TOILET TO FLUSH WHILE YOU ARE SHOWERING. It will drink ALL of your beer.
FOR GOD'S SAKE, ARE YOU LISTENING??? It will leave dirty underwear on the coffee table when you are expecting company. It
will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine. If the "Bedtimes" message opened in a Windows 95/98/Me/XP environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, it will also refill your Skim milk with whole milk.

GREG sounded a little disappointed about the outcome of the tie-breaking "Superbowl Shoot-out" (talking to the car guys), He-(GREG),re-capped the mix-up and sudden change in rules/????...................Although GREG may have been edgy about things not turning out as was planned, it made for some really good live /drama/entertainment.!

In case you missed it,the two tie-breakers were told to study-up on Superbowl trivia for a tie-breaking decision to win the RECLINER. Rules stated that all sources of refrence info. were acceptable, but a time limit to say the answer.

One of the contestants,mis-understood,and only studied & had materials for THIS year's Superbowl, she was granted questions from this year only. The other contestant complained that she was getting hard questions from ALL Superbowls!

Then they threw out the first round and started over with this year ??'s (made-up on the spot)

Although there was some tension for GREGG,the players, and even the man from the store that was giving the recliner, this was a really entertaing moment in RADIO.

*Mr.Talkonline came in 3rd in the contest btw.I might get him the recliner anyway,DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE STORE?

  • Welcome back ESPN RADIO! -- talkonline, 12:24:49 01/31/03 Fri
Even though I will listen to LOCAL TALK most of the time,ESPN has some great TALK!.......AND,on 1450,it should come-in a lot better than it did before.

I have not been able to tune-in the new SOUTH JERSEY FM station for NJ 101.5 yet, maybe when they start broadcasting, tomorrow,it will be easier to find them?

I'm also wondering about the MILLENIUM news expansion??? Will WKXW do LOCAL news???

WELL????? So far we know that....

    .. they will have a morning show,8-10am,weekdays.

Boardwalk Bullies broadcast/and streaming audio through February,

from what I hear 101.5, will NOT be simulcast on 1450 (moving to fm),

BIG rumors about some ESPN programs coming on

    "an "all new station"

other than that ???????????????????? MILLENNIUM is keeping this a pretty big secret! AND keeping us guessing, right up 'till the last minute. I wonder if 101.5 would simulcast PART? of it's line-up???? FCC "black-out" rules possibly could apply anyhow-BUT I don't know if the "blackout" rules count for radio?

If you know a student who goes to AC HIgh School, but who does NOT live in Atlantic City, ask them about recent announcements made over the Public Address system regarding JOBS and FREE JOB/TRAINING and PLACEMENT services.

It has come to my attention that announcements have been made inviting ATLANTIC CITY student residents only to participate, specificly ONLY ATLANTIC CITY students. (EXCLUDING Ventnor,Margate,Brigantine, students).

If you have any questions about this, ask DAVE DELANEY,he is serving on the youthworks or workforce invest. board jobs committe as the representative for all Cape-Atlantic parents of children ages 14-21, who would like to be employed.

I do not mean to imply that Dave himself is responsible for the insulting messages being broadcasted to students at AC High School, just that if you are a parent,Delaney,is your representative for the local bueracracy responsible for excluding SOME LOCAL high-schoolers from employment opportunities.

I have looked over the bylaws of the youthworks orginisation and although there is specific mention of targeting "at risk" youth as benificiaries of this Cape-Atlantic employment program, the stated purpose is to offer employment opportunities to ALL LOCAL YOUTH ages 14-21.AND THEY SURE ARE SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY DOING IT!(refrence:The Sentinal Online, click on the big WIB (workforce investment board icon)

Oh yeah-and one of their goals is "marketing"-does un-censored publicity count?

OK,the board is open again. We need a password to post messages. Currently,Myself,Mike, and Talkoffline, and the lawyers, have a password.

If you would like a p-word to post messages, please send me an email-(to the hotmail addy) localtalk2@hotmail.com........and I will get back to you with a pword-or choose your own p-word and I will put it on the list. (let me know what it is).

The only other alternative right now, would be to "moderate" all posts before they go up. That way really slows the board down too much.

    Thank-you everyone for visiting!

  • Groundhog BETTING Bulletin -- Press release, 19:03:28 01/30/03 Thu
CYBERSPACE-ODDS ARE PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL WILL SEE HIS SHADOW

BetWWTS.com Favors Famous Groundhog Predicting Six More Weeks Of Winter

St. John’s, Antigua (January 30, 2003)—For the 117th year on February 2nd, millions around the world will breathlessly await as “Punxsutawney Phil” emerges from his burrow in Gobbler’s Knob to give his annual end of winter prediction. There’s added excitement to the annual Groundhog Day festivities this year, as BetWWTS.com offers odds on whether or not the world’s smallest and furriest weather forecaster will see his shadow predicting when winter ends and spring begins.

A leading offshore gaming company for over 10 years, BetWWTS.com has listed the early odds heavily in favor of Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow at 1/7 odds (i.e., win $1 for every $7 bet). Those believing that spring is right around the corner, may wager against history by betting that Phil will not see his shadow, currently at 4/1 odds (i.e., win $4 for every $1 bet).

“With this winter being especially harsh, there’s no doubt the millions of people feeling the effects of the cold snowy weather are hoping that Phil predicts an early start to spring,” said Stuart Doyle, chief bet manager of BetWWTS.com. “This year there’s a little added pressure for Phil to forecast an end to the dreariness of winter because for the first time in history the sitting governor of Pennsylvania will visit Punxsutawney’s Groundhog Day celebration. Odds are that the historic trend of Phil seeing his shadow will prevail again, but there’s always the chance that the furry forecaster will come through in the clutch and predict an end to winter.”

Groundhog Day stretches back to ancient beliefs associated with Candlemas Day by northern Europeans, who believed that if the groundhog saw his shadow, it meant there would be six more weeks of winter. If not, then spring is “just around the corner.” Today the holiday is most famously celebrated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where the tradition has made Punxsutawney Phil an American institution. As a result of his fame, Phil has made several television appearances, visited the White House, and served as inspiration for the renowned “Groundhog Day” movie staring Bill Murray in 1993.

BetWWTS.com will be offering the Groundhog Day bet through 5:25 a.m. EST on February 2nd, 2003 – approximately two hours before the official announcement is expected at 7:25 a.m. EST.

  • Changes to this site -- talkonline, 18:44:50 01/30/03 Thu
So I moved the "Code Amber" to a different page. This page was really slow to load, hope that it helps!

I moved the Code Amber to the "Local News From Around the Globe" page,(link at top of this page). There is an active alert now (not LOCAL), but most of the time there is not (Thank God).....speaking of the News... page,I like it,but I must admit that the page is a little boring. Aside from the ever-changing "content", or the aggregated stuff, I think the page needs a little something? Something original for that page?

If anyone would like a little "space" on that page for a regular (LOCAL INTREST) feature with some original material -let me know ok? ....no pay as of yet,but I'll share any affiliate commisions that the page makes (a big zero so far)

Oh yeah,I probably will be moving or upgading the bandwidth of pages on the rest of this site pretty soon.

  • The Atlantic Daily Sentinel WRONG! AGAIN -- Mike, 18:11:18 01/30/03 Thu
Hurley said that last year his radio station was purchased by New Jersey's largest radio station, New Jersey 101.5.

1450am was owned by Millennium BEFORE NJ 101.5

Radio talk show host Harry Hurley will be returning to his Monday through Friday daily talk show format from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. begining Monday
Feb. 3.with Millinium Radio 1450 AM.

    The correct spelling is MILLENNIUM

"First I want to thank my employer Millennium Radio for their continued support and faith in me," said Hurley in a phone interview Wednesday night. "We are now in our 13th year together, which is rare in our business."

Millennium Radio has only been around for just about two years. Hurley has been with 1450am for 13 years, not Millennium.
