Today I was thinking that of all the time I put at sea in the 50s and 60s not many bad things happened. And of course one of the realy bad things that did I was reminded of looking at some photograghs. We were in Port Pirie in South Australia on the British Piper, had a Capt Bligh as skipper, who told the mate to get the masts painted, we were discharging petrol, I was up the foremast my mate Alby James was up the Main. Next thing the Sparkie is racing along the wharf yelling that Alby had fallen of the topmast. To shorten the story and his legs,he spent eight months in hospital. He had been overcome by petrol fumes, sixty feet is a long way to fall onto a steel deck. Cheers Des [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
