Date Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 02:25:03pm In reply to: alf corbyn 's message, "distance" on Saturday, February 16, 01:47:20pm I was in Murmansk on an Athel tanker in the early 60s and the only place we could get a drink was in the local trade union club where we were plied with vodka till it was coming out of our ears. For some reason I kept bursting into "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" and was repeatedly told by the lady commissar that I must stop. When I continued I was taken outside and put into the Russian version of a Black Maria which set off and kept stopping to take more drunks on board.I taught most of them the words of "Yankee Doodle" and then we were thrown out one by one along the bitterly cold country roads outside of the town.I was eventually able to bum a lift back to the ship on the back of a motor bike driven by a guy who was twice as drunk as me and who kept calling me James Bond. Keep swinging the lamp Laurie [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
