The Red cross made up the boxes containing tobacco, chocolate, soap and socks. The boxes were late arriving at the front due to bad weather in the channel. They were distributed on 26th and reports went back to U.K. that the troops were so pleased to be remembered in this way they fought with renewed vigour. Many returning spoke of the day they recieved their box from the king, this in time became boxing. Prior to W.W.1 there is no record of a public holiday on 26th and it is a holiday only recognised in countries that were at that time or are now members of the commonwealth. happy daze john in oz [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
