CITY OF NEWBURGH — A 17-year-old died Wednesday after a street fight, and police say a 13-year-old killed him.

The fight began shortly after 4 p.m. with a cluster of teenagers on the corner of First Street and Carpenter Avenue. Four kids, ages 12-17, showed up during the next two hours in the emergency room of St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital with punctures and slashes from the fight. The oldest was a 17-year-old named Levy King Flores who lived on Overlook Street. Police spoke to him briefly before doctors prepared him for a flight to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

He was in stable condition when he boarded the helicopter, police said. He died on the way.

A 12-year-old boy also went to Westchester. A 14-year-old boy would follow. A 15-year-old girl was treated and released by St. Luke's staff. The stabbings reverberated through city schools Thursday, forcing the district to close school Friday as a safety precaution.

Pedro Marte looked out the window of his corner market Wednesday afternoon and saw the young combatants in the street, some armed with clubs. They clashed briefly and then scattered before the cops could arrive.

"It's crazy," Marte said of the violence among kids.

Police blocked off the streets around the scene of the fight for hours as they investigated, with the help of state police. The FBI would also join them to help explore reported gang connections to the brawl.

Wednesday evening, police arrested a 13-year-old Newburgh boy and charged him as an adult with the crime of second-degree murder. Police did not release the boy's name.

Students said they knew him as "Pinky," a small boy who looked even younger than his age. The Times Herald-Record has learned he is the brother of the 15-year-old girl who was treated at St. Luke's.

Newburgh police Chief Eric Paolilli said detectives and investigators are still trying figure out what kicked off Wednesday's violence. One story circulating the schools and neighborhoods says the fight began between girls and pulled in as many as 15 kids.

Asked about reports the 13-year-old suspect had pulled a knife to defend himself in a crowd of larger fighters, Paolilli said police were investigating the possibility, along with many others.

Either way, it was a painful and surprising day for a city used to dealing with violence. "It's unbelievable to me," Paolilli said of the age of the suspect and victims. "It's unbelievable to me that the violence has risen to this type of action."

He promised increased patrols and an intense investigation as the case moves forward to try to prevent more violence and retaliation. It may have already begun.

A 15-year-old boy arrived at St. Luke's about four hours after the fight.

A bullet had grazed his head while he rode in a car down Renwick Street. Paolilli said they would investigate to see if the shooting was connected to the earlier violence. The 15-year-old's injuries weren't considered life-threatening.

City police have requested anyone with information to contact them at 569-7509.
