TWISTED TIBIA IN YOUNG POULTRY -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 15:48:43 01/11/18 Thu [8]
this is now published and copyrighted by PEAFOWL TODAY magazine (United Peafowl Association) complete with illustrations by D C T
TWISTED TIBIA IN YOUNG POULTRY
by D C TOWNSEND
It was around 2000, give or take a couple years, that I had a Spalding peachick named Firestone because at that time there was a brand of tire with that name that had a very serious defect and many tires were recalled. At that time I had plenty of experience treating crooked toes, straddle legs, and displaced Achilles tendons. If a chick was very young and treatment was done "right now or sooner" a complete cure was the result more often than not.
But there was one thing that haunted me and cast a shadow over the "Friendly Poultry Orthopedist". It took me a long time to even comprehend that the reason why a lower leg and foot pointed out to the side was a twisted tibia. It took an even longer time to learn what to do about it. Firestone was about two weeks old after being treated successfully for a few common problems and I thought that my work with her was complete. Then one day as I peered into the brooder I saw to my horror that Firestone had one leg pointed out to the side. This was certainly "twisted tibia" but not a displaced Achilles tendon because I could see clearly that the tendon was centered in the groove at the rear of the hock joint.
Even today with many cures done with my own hands and more done by persons who got instructions by email or at my website I have to ponder how the idea formed in my head. Perhaps I should have changed Firestone's name to Epiphany, Breakthrough, or Theodora. (Gift from God) because the idea was too good to be my own. So I share this gift with anybody that wants it.
1. I cut some sponge the right size to wrap around just one hock joint and taped it in place. I did not wrap the other joint. Note: It really does not matter which joint is wrapped but I usually do it on the good leg.
2. I brought the lower legs firmly together and taped them from below hocks to above the feet.
REMOVE WATER TO PREVENT TAPED CHICK FROM STUMBLING INTO IT AND DROWNING
3. Taping was done at bed time and removed in the morning so I named it "Night Taping".
I removed tape and sponge in the morning so that the chick could be active during the day.
4. Five nights of treatment completely cured Firestone.
Of course, I anxiously observed her for a long time expecting a relapse and having a hard time believing my eyes. She grew up to be a very beautiful Spalding peahen and lived around sixteen years. I did a necropsy finding an ovarian tumor about three inches diameter, yellow lesions on liver and a slightly enlarged heart.
What untwists a twisted tibia? The force is supplied by the chick's own muscles as it struggles against the "Night Taping". Doing the treatment at night and removing the tape and sponge in the morning so that the chick can eat, drink and walk during the day works very well for me. Sometimes more than five nights of treatment is needed for full cure. What do I mean by "full cure"? The chick will show no evidence of ever having had a twisted tibia. If you stop short of obtaining the full cure it is very likely that the tibia will twist again because being out of line causes pressure that forces leg to twist. It is very important to treat the chick while very young because the bones soon harden.
When someone puts a question on my website or sends me an email asking me how to treat a chick with leg pointed to the side I will insist on seeing a photo of the hock joint taken close up from the rear. Before sending treatment instructions I have to know what I am treating. If there is a displaced Achilles tendon it requires a different treatment. If both probems come together the tendon must be competely repaired first because "Night Taping" will harm a hock joint weakened by a displaced Achilles tendon.
FOOT NOTE
The tibia (and fibula) are located in the piece that the Kentucky Fried Chicken people call the "drumstick". The leg bone above the tibia is the femur. The bone below the tibia is the tarsus.

Re: TWISTED TIBIA IN YOUNG POULTRY -- Vicki Dian (Duck Mama), 23:15:53 06/04/18 Mon [1]
I guess I need to make a hobble for my duck. She was attacked by older male ducks and the left leg was hurt. When she sat down, the leg did not bend and just laid straight. I started bending it for her and now she sit with it bended like the other leg. I gave her physical therapy with the leg and would hold it in place when she stood up. Because she can now walk with a limp and stand up. Walking is difficult cuz she will overlap her feet on top of each other. How do I help this?? I always separate them and so one will not be over the other. I continue to treat her with vitamins, etc. But what can I do to keep the feet off each other?? Hobbles?? How do I make them?? She is isolated in a large cage with a friend. She has come a long way & glad I did not list to vet!! What do I do now to keep feet apart?? ThanXX in advance!

I have a two week old guinea Keet with a slipped tendon. Their foot is straight back behind them and we can’t feel it popping in. I was going to make a sling or chick chair but I couldn’t find any directions.

Re: TWISTED TIBIA IN YOUNG POULTRY -- Kristen (Concerned), 17:16:30 08/22/18 Wed [1]
Excellent article, thank you!! I have a month old peachick whom I believe has both slipped tendon and twisted tibia. Saturday morning she stood fine, Saturday evening one leg swung out to the side. A couple days of stretching and I can get the tendon into the right place, tho can’t get it to stay. And the leg still swings out to the side. Have pics & video but can’t quite figure out how to upload them.
Your article says night taping will make the slipped tendon situation worse. But the way the bones are misaligned, I’m not sure I can fix the sipped tendon w/o fixing the tibia. Any suggestions appreciated!!
Thank you!

Try very hard to get the Summer 2017 issue of PEAFOWL TODAY the official publication of the United Peafowl Association. My own copy of that arrived yesterday(Jan 2, 2018) due to some problems in production but it was well worth the long wait. To get this magazine one must be a UPA member. If you succeed in getting this magazine issue look on page ten for article by D C Townsend.

3 day old chick standing on one leg -- Jill in KY, 08:24:21 06/18/17 Sun [1]
A chick I hatched 3 days ago was fine the first day. Second day he began holding his right leg up and hops around. I've tried the bandaid splint to hold both legs straight, hoping it bring the leg down, didn't work. I tried putting a little stiff paper/tape shoe on, that didn't help.
I'm not sure what's wrong with him but hope it's fixable soon while he's young.
Can you upload pictures here? I've taken several to show the problem. Thanks for any suggestions.

This forum is not able to show photos but you can put photo at a photo storage website such as villagephotos.com or photobucket and then put a link to that here so that I can get to it. you can send photo in email to me (just click my name) but my computer is old and can not display a large photo.
I need to see close up of rear and side of the chick's legs.
You can put a video clip at some storage websites but do not try to send video to me by email because my computer will not show it to me.

Chick with slipped tendon or twisted tibia??? -- Christa, 16:36:24 05/15/17 Mon [6]
Just checked on this 4 week old Production Red and she isn't walking. She can't put any weight on her leg, and it can twist all the way around. We can't figure out if it's a slipped tendon or if it's a twisted tibia. Do you have any insights? Is there any hope for her? If so, how do we splint it? Her hock is swollen, and lower leg below hock looks crooked itself. Are there other possibilities we haven't considered?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Re: Chick with slipped tendon or twisted tibia??? -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 23:36:20 05/15/17 Mon [1]
I do not believe that the Achilles tendon is the problem. The bones or joint may be bending out of shape. Perhaps the chick has been growing too fast. Is the production red a fast growing breed? Sometimes being fed a starter designed to promote fast growing can put stress on tender young legs. I would have to understand this chick's problem before suggesting a treatment plan. Perhaps an anti inflammatory drug could help.

Re: Chick with slipped tendon or twisted tibia??? -- Christa, 00:17:25 05/16/17 Tue [1]
I don't think that Production Reds are fast growing in the sense of broiler type birds. It's just a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a New Hampshire Red. They are just on a normal, non-medicated chick starter (I threw away the bag and can't remember the brand). They also have the electrolyte and vitamin packets in their water (nipple waterer, so it's clean).
I have 9 chicks, 3 different varieties. This particular pullet is probably the smallest. They have free-choice feed, and usually go through about a quart/24 hours. Should I take away their feed at night?
She didn't appear to have any problems at all before today. I did briefly put them into a tote this morning while I cleaned their brooder, and I'm wondering if the newspaper on the floor and the commotion of being moved caused an injury. What other information can I provide to give you a better idea? More pictures/video?

Re: Chick with slipped tendon or twisted tibia??? -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 13:54:03 05/16/17 Tue [1]
I went back and looked at your Google Drive photos and video again and I do see what seems to be a twisted tibia. You can try the "night taping method" for a week and see if you get any results.
-----
sponge is taped to just one hock joint in order to protect both joints from pressure. Then the lower legs are taped firmly together from hocks to ankles.
As the chick fights this her own muscles will supply pressure to straighten the tibia. This treatment is is for young growing birds.
I prefer to do it at night and remove all tape in the morning so that the bird can move and eat during day.
REMOVE ALL WATER DURING TREATMENT TO PREVENT TAPED BIRD FROM DROWNING. I add this warning because I learned it the hard way. If you have more questions, just ask.

Hello,
This is the chick you diagnosed with a twisted tibia a few weeks ago. Responded to night taping and was doing well. This morning noticed that leg was limp and sticking out from hip. Toes do not react or curl when I touch them. Was thinking possible dislocation?

Re: Chick with stiff leg -- NG, 05:52:09 04/20/17 Thu [1]
What would be the treatment for that? Based on what I have read I am afraid the leg is dislocated at the hip or broken. It is stiff and will not flex or bend. The closest avian specialist vet is only in on the weekends and I want to make sure I am doing all I can in the meantime.

Re: Chick with stiff leg -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 10:02:30 04/20/17 Thu [1]
Your video makes it very clear to me that the hock joint is bending backwards and will do so until it is treated in the correct way. My favorite method of doing this is to get an ordinary half gallon plastic milk jug--the kind that has been in stores for many years. Use scissors to cut the handle from this jug. Now look at this hollow plastic handle and observe the angle where it bends. Hold this beside a chick with normal healthy leg. Use a marker on the plastic to show where you will cut handle to make brace. Brace begins a quarter inch above foot goes behind hock joint and most of the way up the back of the tibia (the part of leg called "drumstick" by the Kentucky Fried Chicken makers.
You want this brace to cover sides and rear of leg so you must cut away the front (the inside of the handle). Round off the corners of your brace to avoid hurting tender skin.
You may begin cutting brace a bit too big because it is easier to cut off some afterwards than to have to start again if you got it too small.
Bend the hock joint into normal position and use any kind of tape to attach it. Tape should be about a half inch wide.

Hello,
So we did managed to splint the leg as recommended but it is still crossing in front of his body from his hip downward- this is what happened when he was first hatched. Is it possible there is some kind of hip joint issue as well? Is there some kind of wrap design that would hold the hip in a more natural position? If I press against his hip his leg straightens and he is able to bear weight.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7ZB-Uhz3p_RckZQRWk3OWs4ZEE
If I press lightly inward on his hip area, this chick's leg touches the ground normally. When I release, the leg crosses from what looks like the hip.
Thanks for your continued assistance.

Re: Chick with stiff leg -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 13:36:22 04/23/17 Sun [1]
You are very welcome. Let me begin by explaining bird let anatomy. Birds have a hip socket joint just like humans. The femur bone is the top bone of the leg and at bottom of femur bone is the stifle joint which is like human knee. Then there is the tibia/fibula compared to human shin but I also compare this with what the Kentucky Fried Chicken people call the "drumstick". In chickens the fibula is about the size and shape of a toothpick so the tibia bears the weight. At the lower end of the tibia is the hock joint. This is the joint that was bent the wrong way in your chick and I told you how to make brace from jug handle to repair that. It seems to me that you did not do this. Please go back and check your work on the hock joint brace. Correcting a hock joint that has ben backwards can be tricky but can be done.
This must be done before thinking about hip

We tried to improvise with available materials and used some cardboard and tape. We thought we had fixed the knee joint...it would appear not. We will try the jug handle method. How will we know if we have braced him correctly? Thank you for your patience.

Re: Chick with stiff leg -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 20:37:13 04/23/17 Sun [1]
Knee??? Before I can explain anything I MUST be certain that we understand each other. The problem we are trying to repair is at the HOCK joint. This joint is where the chick fuzz or feathers end and the bare scale covered lower leg begins. If you are familiar with horse anatomy a horse's hock is the same as a chicken's hock. Now look at a half gallon milk jug handle and see how the bend in the handle does match a healthy chicken hock. Then use the instructions that I gave for making this brace. After hock joint is repaired and functioning correctly we will see if there is another problem to treat.

Hello again. So we have managed to apply the jug handle brace as instructed (at least I hope so). I will post a picture tomorrow, but in the meantime can you tell me if he should now be walking correctly? His hock joint I think we splinted properly but he is still holding his foot up kind of diagonally across his body when he walks.

It appears to me that you have brought jock joint into correct position. The toes may have a problem that could be helped by holding them in correct position (for a bird standing) and gently massaging them to stretch tendons and muscles connected to them.

Chick with twisted leg? -- NG, 12:01:53 04/14/17 Fri [5]
Hello again, I have been treating one of the rescue chicks with a hobble for splayed leg for about 3 weeks. Just yesterday I noticed one of his legs seemed twisted and he was extending his wing to balance himself when he walked. Am not certain about that. It depends on how the chick reacts to the treatment. The goal of all treatment is a bird with all parts pointed in the right direction and functioning perfectly.

OK,
After doing the "night taping" tonight and removing tape in the morning take a careful look at how the chick stands and walks. If feet seem too far apart then put on the hobble brace and check again. I am trying to teach you how to be a poultry orthopedist to pass this art on to others.

chick can't walk or stand -- NG, 12:12:01 04/02/17 Sun [9]
I have a 4-5 day old chick that cannot walk or stand. This has been an issue since it hatched. When "he" moves, he kind of flaps his wings and drags along on his belly. Vet said it was some kind of "leg deformity" but could not give a more definitive diagnosis. Is eating and drinking normally (have been making sure he has access to both food and water).
Was considering some kind of sling, but not sure if it is appropriate for what is going on or how to go about constructing one.

Re: chick can't walk or stand -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 14:23:21 04/02/17 Sun [1]
I believe that the right tibia is twisted causing lower leg to point outward. It is interesting that another chick with twisted tibia was just posted on this forum before yours but am glad that yours is younger since this can make a difference in the outcome of the treatment. But I have hope even for the first one. My "night taping" method started when I had a two week old peachick that suddenly developed twisted tibia after having treatments for other orthopedic problems. Five nights
of this treatment were all that she needed before growing into a healthy peahen. I cut a small piece of sponge to tape to hock joint to prevent rubbing and bruising. Then I brought lower legs together and taped then from hock down to ankle. I removed tape and sponge in morning so she could eat and drink in daytime. The action of leg muscles pulling against the tape is what powered the treatment but the result did seem like a miracle.
REMOVE ALL WATER DURING NIGHT TREATMENT TO PREVENT DROWNING.

Tried to find some but could not find right now.
Just have lower legs together with toes pointed in right direction with very thin pad between hock joints. You can not go wrong.

Also, would you recommend that the chick be kept by itself until it heals?

Yes you did find a good picture. But the tape could be just a fraction of an inch shorter near the toes. the chick does need to be in a brooder of proper temperature, either alone or with just a few of its own size WITH NO WATER. Sorry but I have nightmare memory of drowned peachick and resolved that its death should be a warning to save other birds. If your chick has been with a hen this is the time to separate it from her.
A small mirror can be used to keep it from feeling lonely

After sharing my success, a coworker asked if i could help one of their chicks - it is maybe 5-6 days old. hock is swollen and foot and limb appear swollen too. my initial thought was a slipped tendon and i tried gently stretching the limb back as recommended but didn't feel anything. here are some pictures:

Re: chick with swollen hock -- D C T - friendly poultry orthopedist, 21:55:08 04/03/17 Mon [1]
Yes, but I call it a displaced Achilles tendon. This tendon crosses the rear of the hock joint and should be in a groove
in the end of the bone but it can get pushed to the side and not be able to get back in place. The longer it is out of place the more the surrounding tissues swell making it very hard to return it and make it stay in place. Hold the chick one of your hands and grip bad leg just above the foot, pull foot behind chick straightening hock joint, then twist foot while watching the tendon. You should be twisting so that the back toe begins to point outward but must stop when tendon is centered on the hock. When you release your grip and gently sit the chick on its feet the tendon may stay in place but is very likely to pop out of place again if there is swelling blocking the channel. This is where a chick chair or body sling is VERY useful.
Years ago I found a freshly hatched peachick and got the tendon in place right then before any damage had been done. So when I sat the peachick down it did some wild running and jumping so that I feared it would displace that tendon but it did not. But a different peachick had both tendons out of place and had some swelling. It took nearly two weeks of serious effort with chick chair and braces before that one was repaired. I must tell you that sometimes I have not been able to repair a chick even after much effort

3 week old chick with twisted leg -- JS, 20:55:54 04/01/17 Sat [1]
Hi, We have a chick with at twisted leg that she's had since she hatched. She had a hobble on her legs with self-adhesive tape for the last 10 days with minimal improvement. She has been eating good quality food, and appears relatively happy. We took the hobble off today and she was having a difficult time resting any weight on the bad legl. We just made a sling for her and are hoping it helps! Please help!

This appears to be twisted tibia. I do wish that you had contacted me as soon as the chick hatched but there may be hope for treatment by my "night taping" method which was first used on a two week old peachick named Firestone. She was given just five nights of this treatment and was completely cured.
I cut a small piece of thin sponge to wrap around one hock joint. Padding one hock joint will protect both hocks from rubbing together so it does not matter which hock is padded. Then I brought the lower legs firmly together and taped them
from hock to ankle. In the morning I removed the tape and padding. Forgot to mention that the padding was taped in place before taping legs.
REMOVE ALL WATER DURING TAPING TO PREVENT DROWNING
I assume that this chick is in a brooder and not under a mother hen since a hen might step on a taped chick.
If you have questions just ask.

I have looked at your rooster's photos and can see that his problem must be in hip joints or stifle joints. His hock joints look healthy. There is nothing I know of to repair this but he looks like he could still enjoy life as a pet if kept in a safe pen where he is not picked on.

Young turkey with bent leg -- Vanessa, 22:32:56 09/25/16 Sun [1]
Hi -- hoping you can help us sort out what is going on with our new turkey. She is a few months old and we have had her for a few weeks. She is our first turkey and was sort of gangly and bow-legged from the start, which we thought maybe was normal for a turkey. But in the past week I've noticed that one of her legs looks a lot worse than before -- sort of twisted to the side. She does not seem in pain and is eating fine, but she is a little more off to her self than before (we have chickens but she's our only turkey) and is roosting on top of the coop rather than inside on the roost, which has us suspecting that she is having trouble roosting. I am sending you pictures and a video by email.
Thank you so much for your help! Our birds are free range egg-layers and we just want to take care of her and keep her comfortable, but are concerned about her getting to a point where she is in pain.

My chick has a leg turned to the inside. It appears that it may have been broken from breeder who sent my neighbor 25 chicks (I live across the road and took the chick in to separate and hopefully rehab.) There is some swelling at hock area and it is already calloused. She is eating and drinking and otherwise appears normal. When she stands her leg turns in and wing comes down like a crutch for support. I'm not sure if this will eventually correct itself or if I should splint or make little hobbles

Light Brahma with swollen hock and limping -- Michelle R, 11:40:20 05/15/16 Sun [1]
My Light Brahma has an issue with her leg/hock joint. We first noticed it when she was about 4-5 weeks old... She was limping but it didn't seem to bother her (still running around but not as agile as the others). Upon exam, her leg has a very swollen hock, and the leg twists so that foot splays out. Now she is 7-8 weeks old and when she walks the hock is practically touching the ground. She doesn't do the ladder to the coop well (I've never actually seen her climb it, and she just flies down) and she never gets up to roost, she just sleeps on the ground. We don't know if this was an injury or a deformity. The only time she may have hurt herself is when my husband put her on the roosting pole and she fell off, landing in a belly flop. Photos don't show the issue because her leg feathers cover it up, but there's a link to a video that demonstrates the issue. Thanks for your help!

This appears to be twisted tibia (bone called "drumstick" by
the Kentucky Fried Chicken makers)
But I would like to see the hock joint (rear view) close up
to check position of Achilles tendon. This chicken was
growing fast so legs were soft cartilage easily injured.
It is nearly impossible to find a good avian vet that will
treat this but if you can then do it. If not make the photos
of hock joint and send them to me. Will try to help but there
is NO guarantee of cure

Severe spraddle / can't walk stand / need help -- Holly Gaskell, 06:51:45 05/03/16 Tue [1]
I have a chick that I adopted 2 days ago that needs help.
It was the only chick to pip and hatch out of its whole hatch according to the lady who bred it. Born April 16, 2016 so 2 weeks old now. She is an Americauna/Easter Egger mix.
When she was born, she was severely spraddle legged with one foot over her head. With taping for spraddle leg, she now has her legs both below her but sits on her back hocks and can't stand up and stay standing, and cannot walk. When I got her, I retaped her legs above and below the hocks to stabilize and straighten them forward. I realized the left foot was turning out to the right and both feet had issues with the toes curling/turning in.
So I took sticky foam and pressed her feet to it, in the correct position, and trimmed to shape and taped them. Overnight (yesterday) I had the feet taped together (sort of bracing them straight like you would for a club foot baby). This morning I removed the tape securing the two feet together so she could move her feet individually and try to "walk".
Her right leg is weaker than the left and so she leans right. She also will pitch forward and topple face first sometimes. If she falls over she will quickly right herself using her wings and getting her feet under her and she can scoot around in this way, trying to walk but basically flipping and picking herself back up.
If lightly supported when drinking she will raise herself up a bit when drinking but cannot stand fully straight like an ordinary chick.
She basically "stands" on her hocks and her lower leg mostly is straight from her hocks down, with her feet straight out, she doesn't really stand on her feet. I have put pads on her hocks now as I was working about her getting sores.
She is MUCH improved since birth and is more strong and mobile than when I adopted her 2 days ago.
I removed the hobble above her hocks tonight as it seemed her upper legs are staying in the right position. I still have spraddle hobbles on the lowed legs (vet wrap) and she is still taped into her shoes
I have done some physical therapy with her including putting her in a small cup til she got out (less than an hour) ... And supporting her lightly to stand when she is drinking, and supporting her to be in a standing position and manually moving her feet to walk in a normal pattern. Like showing her how to move feet and be upright. She does well supported but leans to the right and will fall over face first or to the right if not supported, then will steady herself bank into an upright laying position either with her feet under her or out to the left side (leaning on her right). She does not rest on her feet but rests on her hocks.
She has been on chick starter by the original owner/breeder and yesterday I switched her to a mix of medicated game bird starter (higher protein and nutrients, used for my silkie and bantam chicks), as well as Ranch-Way easy-feed (mash) chick starter which she loves.
I also have high quality vitamins in her water. I have pebbles in her water so she cannot drown.
Would appreciate suggestions and advice for treatment.
Hocks are not flat; I don't se any evidence of a slipped tendon.
I know she may not ever be totally normal but I would like to see if I can get her standing and walking, so she can live a more normal
Life as she grows up. I don't want to cull her.
She eats and drinks very well and has a strong will to make it. Very sweet personality. She moves around (albiet awkwardly) and will sort of half stand up and scoot/ move forward, fall over, readjust etc. She eats, drinks and is happy. It frustrates her that she can't walk and move like a normal chick.
I am hoping once the shoes come off she will stand easier.
She was alone until
Yesterday and now has a 3 old Brabanter Chick with her as a friend who is also a little special needs but can stand and move around. That chick (chick #2) has a strong right leg but something isn't quite correct with the left leg, when she goes to use it, so she walks backwards or kind of hops forward -- but is getting stronger and moving better although still not walking normally. Her breeder said she had a hard time pipping and has been wonky since she was born. But she is doing pretty good and I am hopeful she will continue to normalize with her walking as she gets older. She is not spraddle legged and her toes and feet are fine. Her tendons look fine to me also.
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have. You can email
Me directly at holly@azgaskell.com
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Reading your post I can only guess that this may be either the twisted tibia that you already suggest or a displaced Achilles tendon. I need to see a closeup clear photo of the hock joint in order to know what is wrong and consider the proper thing to do next. Photos can be put on a website such as villagephotos.com or photobucket then post link here or you can email them to me. It is important to treat all problems like this one right now or sooner.

Chick can't walk -- Sherry (not ready to give up), 01:48:13 11/27/15 Fri [6]
I have two chicks that are feathered out. The mother hen decided she was finished with them and began harassing/attacking them. One chick especially was hiding and scared, so I released the mother. (They were in a greenhouse.) The scared chick started losing its ability to run around, and then began flipping over on its back. It sticks its legs straight back like a flying superman, and the toes curl. It still has a good appetite and drinks. When it needs to defacate, it starts flapping and chirping loudly, flopping around, sounding very distressed. It seems to be able to grip my finger with the curled toes. I have tried some physical therapy. Sometimes I gently straighten the toes and legs out, but they always go back. It preens its feathers and is aware of potential danger such as high flying birds. I have put it in a sling repeatedly. It seems to be getting stronger, but both legs still go straight back as if it is planking or like a dolphin on land. I've been keeping it indoors in a box in a sling mostly.

Sad to say but this is the way that some mothers (but not all) do wean their offspring so it is essential to watch for this and provide separate pens as soon as it happens.
-------------
The chick's symptoms suggest nerve damage/paralysis that is most likely botulism. Inflammation of nerves can be healed with medication and good nutrition. If you can get a 5 mg Prednisone tablet use it this way. Split it and give half today. The half tablet will be swallowed more easily if dipped in water and then quickly pushed deep into beak before it begins to melt. There are alternate methods of getting pills into birds. I sometimes get membrane from between rings of raw onion and wrap pill in this slippery material to make it slide from beak to crop of bird. Or if bird is big enough I use a small piece of white bread wrapped and pressed around pill, dip it in water and then push it into beak. Then I watch neck to observe movement of
skin as object passes downward.
Tomorrow give the other half of tablet to the chick.
Vitamin C and B-complex are helpful for healing nerves.
Please post an update of your chick's progress because feedback helps me to help others

Re: Chick can't walk -- Sherry, 23:26:07 11/29/15 Sun [1]
Thank you so much! The information you provided was very helpful! My chick (probably half grown - not a tiny hatchling) has been gaining strength daily. I had not been giving vitamins, but I had been feeding chick starter, boiled egg yolk, and tiny bits of apple. I didn't have a 5 mg prednisone pill, but I had a 20, which I halved several times to get to the 2.5 dosage. I had not described the size other than to say it was fully feathered, so It may be under-dosed. Should the prednisone be given for more than 2 days?
I did some reading on botulism and poultry. The diagnosis does seem to fit. I had not mentioned, but the chick also had a droopy neck at one point. It has been 3-4 weeks since the original problem was observed. It went from normal/healthy to weak and then to lying prostrate or even upside down. I did not observe feathers falling out as is a possible symptom that I read about. Now it is thrusting itself around in its sling. It still flails about wildly when trying to defecate. Legs are getting stronger and can grip quite tightly if I put my finger in its clasp. It continues with a good appetite and preening feathers. Balance is improving, but it still cannot straighten out the toes without assistance or stand up. Do you think it will be able to stand and walk eventually like a normal chicken?
Thanks again! I cannot believe you are so kind as to offer this help for free. Vets don't even know how to help with a chicken.😊🐥🐓

You are welcome. I exist to serve my Creator by helping His
most helpless creatures. In this season when we celebrate the
birth of Christ, the Savior it gave me joy when you told me
that your chick was helped by the information I gave. Thank
you for the feedback.
----------------------
Another thought about botulism symptoms and poultry behavior.
When a member of flock falls over and flutters the others
may attack and even kill it. Healing can take time. Years ago
I had a cockerel with his mother and siblings.(just a fuzzy
chick) He began to run backwards and fall onto his back. I
put him in a well padded basket in my house and had to hold
him in one hand to feed him with the other. This went on
for eight weeks before he suddenly began to get control of
his neck and legs. I believed that the arriving of adult
hormones had something to do with the change. A state
poultry lab doctor confirmed this and we talked about
cortisone (steroid) drugs such as Prednisone healing the
inflammation of nerves.
-----------
Your chick's toes will probably straighten as he heals but
if not a chick shoe taped to the bottom of his foot will
do the job. An alternative to the "shoe" is to use stiff
tape around each toe. Sometimes taping needs to be done
to hold foot in correct position (tape runs in figure eight
below foot crossing on top of ankle and circling lower shin
bone).
-----------
Getting back to nutrition--I like to chop romaine lettuce,
collard, cabbage, green onion tops, and any other raw
vegetable frmo produce department. For protein I like raw
beef, finely chopped. Ground beef can be bought but it needs
to be high quality avoiding the "pink slime" variety.
I did use ground beef years ago for a peachick that was
given to me due twisted neck. I mixed Vionate with this and
had to put it into her beak for the first week of her
treatment. She lived eitht years..

Re: Chick can't walk -- Sherry, 20:18:04 12/03/15 Thu [1]
My chicken began walking yesterday, and today its balance is even better. I had held it the previous night, frequently stretching out the curled toes on one foot. It had previously been gaining strength, but I did give it 2.5 mg of prednisone for 3 straight days. I don't know if that contributed or not. It is also starting to get some red in its tiny comb, so I suspect it is a cockerel and may be getting some male hormones as you had mentioned. I wish it was a pullet, since it has become so tame, but I can't be picky. At this point, I am fortunate that it has recovered so well, and part of the reason I continued to try was because you gave me hope.😊
I know that it is "only" a chicken, but I feel responsible to be a good steward for the animals in my care. It was exhausting me to care for it for so long, and it was causing me to lose sleep due to it flopping around helplessly - even when in a sling suspended with elastic string. I also care for my mother who has Alzheimer's, so my patience is already worn thin. You at least provided an accurate diagnosis (a vet who was treating my horse told me the chick had a broken leg, but I knew that was not true), a course of treatment, and the hope that there could be a good outcome and that the energy would not be wasted.
Thank you SO much. I am also a Christian, and I admire that you chose to minister to others by helping the vulnerable critters and also that you do whatever you do to glorify God. I pray that God blesses you as you are blessing others. I will probably never meet you in this life to properly thank you, but I am confident that I will see you in heaven some day. Thanks again,
-Sherry

oops, forgetful old me........
There is an inexpensive new method of preventing Alzheimer's
that is also helpful to those who have it. NO side effects
either unless one is allergic to COCONUT OIL. -- the natural
non-hydrogenated kind found in any grocery store.
I have been taking a tablespoon (or more) of this every

Another chick that can't walk -- AJ, 19:05:57 11/30/15 Mon [3]
Dear Sir:
We have an approximately six week old bantam silky chick that was developing fine. However, a few days ago, he appeared to have a broken toe but continued walking around, though with a limp. Then a couple of days later he appears to have sustained a worse injury. (I did notice the mother leaped from the top of the box onto the chick at one point and provisionally attributed the problem to that.) The chick is now unable to walk. His left leg tends to become splayed out behind him, his balance is impaired, and he generally prefers to stay in a "folded up" position as if seated on a nest. He peeps and occasionally trills at rest, but sounds more shrill when I have to move him around or when he flails about on his own. I have him positioned in a hand towel fashioned into a donut shape to assist with his stability, which also helps him get a little elevation to eat & drink more easily. He's eating willingly but sparingly. The only other clue I have is that he seems more uncomfortable when I support him from underneath, as I often do with my chickens. (Other than the occasional obstreperous rooster who "doth protest too much," most of my chickens are fine with being supported under their keel to be carried, so this was a little surprising.)
I'd be happy to send photos; just need to know what views you'd like.
Thanking you kindly for your service.

Perhaps you are right about toe being broken but the other
symptoms suggest it might be botulism because one broken toe
would not make a chicken unable to walk.
I would suggest separating the chick from the others and
putting him in a padded box or a chick chair in a safe warm
place in your house. I suggest that you read Sherry's posts
and my replies to those posts. If you wish me to see photos
of the chick they can be stored at villagephotos.com or

Thank you so much for your rapid response.
We just got through making an elaborate, dare I call it, "chick throne," mostly because simplicity didn't come easily. But the chick is presently resting, eating and drinking happily.
We'll see how it goes...and thanks again!

You are welcome. I exist to serve my Creator by helping His
most helpless creatures. I am happy to hear that your chick
likes the "throne" you created. There are many ways to
construct a chick chair. It is important to place pads on
both sides of the breast but try to keep weight off of the
sharp edge of the breastbone (keel of sternum). Another thing
to watch is the placement of the hole for the manure to fall
through making it easier to keep the bird clean.
I hope to get a progress report from you

Injured Leg of my 7 Mth Cockerel Blue Astralorp -- Tara Bauer (Perplexed), 21:07:43 11/18/15 Wed [1]
Please Help....My Seventh Month Old Cockerel -Blue Astralorp
Physical Symptom & Treatment History
-Was bitten by the neighbors Pitbull/Two side flesh wounds were minor/I immediately
sprayed with Purple Antiseptic Spray to Seal and disinfect wound.
-Had severe bruising under right leg and x-ray showed no broken leg from Hock joint
downward
-The first day after the attack he limped a little/He remained in the outside run
-The second day, He limped barely putting any weight on right leg
-The third day, He seemed worse, and We took him to vet for exam and x-ray
(noted above)
-The fourth day he just laid on the ground; We brought him indoors. I gave him
40 mg of baby aspirin in yogurt
-The fifth day and 12 hours later I gave him another 40 mg. Another 40mg on day 6.
-I would take him outside to get sunshine.
-I gave him a couple of partial baths to clean his bottom of pooh.
-I sprayed him for his chicken lice.
-He has pretty much been lame the entire time. His good leg has now weakened. His
bad leg (right) used to just drag behind him. Now he can put it out to the side and
sometimes under him, but no weight on it. The Hock joint is very sore, as well as the top
of his leg, and under muscle of leg.
-There are no visible signs that show inflammation or a swollen or out of place joint.
-I hold him up so he can try and stand and exercise his wings.
Appetite & Diet
-His appetite remained good. I put electrolytes in his water. I feed him good poultry
food with watermelon. Sometimes I would add pureed banana squash. I also gave him
a multi-vitamin for birds.(no vit. B12 in it though) I have also given him boiled eggs
with crushed shells. He was not a fan of tuna or raw hamburger.
-His pooh is green, brown and whitish and not very firm.
Environment
-He was in the garage for a couple of nights, then...
-He was isolated in our living room where it was warm and where I could visit him more.
-He is now in the garage. Warm and dry, and I visit him about 4-5 times a day. He seems more sad. (I've even carried him around our female hens that he knows.)
-He did not like the sling that I tried putting him in a week after the attack.
-I wrapped towels in a doughnut shape and prop up both of his sides.
Current Condition
We are now at a week and a half out from the pitbull attack. He still can not stand.
He has tried, and he flaps his wings. He just keeps the sore leg out with no pressure.
I'm at a loss at what to do. He is the sweetest rooster, and I don't want to lose him.
I also don't want him to be miserable. His appetite is down, and his comb and wattle are
darkening a bit. I can't tell if it's the Dicautamous Earth dusted upon him.
Please Help with any advice....

It is hard to tell what is wrong without a photo. Can you locate the broken spot?
Or perhaps the hip joint is injured. You can send photo to my email address since
my forum can not show photos. Or you can store a photo at photobucket or

I need to understand exactly how the chick's leg is injured before I can suggest

Successful treatment of slipped tendons in bantam duckling -- Stephanie, 22:24:23 06/02/15 Tue [1]
I had a bantam silkie duckling hatch late, unassisted, after 31 days of incubation. She scooted around on both hocks after she was born, unable to straighten her legs to get into a normal walking position. She gave the appearance of a bird with slipped tendons--a condition I've been unable to treat successfully in the past. Determined to get an early start on treatment, I repeatedly stretched her legs out straight behind her over her first day and rolled the tendon at the hock joint between my thumb and index finger. I didn't see any improvement; the legs would just go back to their bent, slightly spraddled position. So I gently stretched the legs out straight behind her and snugly wrapped the hock joint on both legs with thin strips of VetWrap. I also taped both feet with the toes spread out, as they were beginning to curl. I then suspended her in a cup so her legs would hang down without touching the bottom of the cup. I did this by stretching VetWrap over the cup and securing it with a rubber band. I cut two holes for her legs and a third for poop. I rigged up more VetWrap around her so she couldn't escape, propped up the whole contraption with a rolled towel to keep the cup from tipping over, and left her in the brooder that way overnight with 3 other silkie ducklings hatched at the same time. I continued to dip her bill in water dosed with a little NutriDrench overnight and offered her little bits of crumbled food every so often. This was definitely a frustrating experience for the duckling, and she fussed and wriggled throughout. By morning, the other three ducklings had climbed up on this setup and all four were sleeping peacefully together. In the morning, I freed her from the cup and let her down on the floor of the brooder, which I'd covered in shelf liner, to see how she would do. I left the tape on her feet, and left her hocks wrapped. She began to try to move around, falling over a lot, but clearly trying to get upright. I took the tape off her feet (which were now spread out nicely) to give her more traction, and, over the next couple of hours, she began walking upright! By that evening, she was running, and she has continued to do well. If it weren't for the bright yellow VetWrap, I'd have trouble distinguishing her from her buddies.

Re: Peking duck turned under -- D C T -- friendly poultry orthopedist, 12:01:47 05/26/15 Tue [1]
If the foot is flexible enough so that you can bend it into
the right shape you can make a "shoe" and tape it to the
bottom of the foot. You can make pattern for the shoe using
the good foot. Find a plastic milk jug or juice bottle with
flat sides (not round) for material to cut out the shoe.
Use waterproof tape of any kind. Even duck (duct) tape will
do the job if you tear off a narrow strip.
You might be able to get a vet to prescribe an
anti-inflammitory drug such as Prednisone but you do not
have to do it. Finding a vet for pet poultry is hard to do.

This is very likely to be a displaced Achilles tendon but
since it could be a different problem I do need to see a
photo of the hock joint taken close up from the rear of the
joint. Photo can be sent to my email or put at village

Thumper, You did not say how old your turkey is. Turkeys
can be difficult to treat especially the large breeds.
There have been a few reports of success with turkeys that
were treated when VERY young. Without a photo I can not

Weak straight leg issue - advice please -- Robyn (Concerned), 06:59:40 03/30/15 Mon [1]
I have a 3 day old chick, that upto this morning has been absolutely fine, then this morning I noticed one leg under it's body with normal resporces, and the other out to the side, this leg is straight, toes pointed, and doesn't seem able to flex foot, or bed knee itself. Don't know if it has been stood on, chick is very vocal, tried hobbling the legs as in sprayed legs, but the straight leg just stays straight, and it falls over, so I then created a hammock type chair for it to get the weight of it's legs. Any advice or suggestions please. I have no vets locally that deal with chickens

POULTRY ORTHOPEDIST STILL HERE -- D C T--friendly poultry orthopedist, 09:47:36 02/28/15 Sat [1]
here is a message that came in my email and my reply to it:
===========================================================
Chick hatched few days ago and hasn't been able to stand on its left leg. Found out this morning the leg is dislocated. Tried the chick "hobbles" but they wouldn't stay on due to kicking while trying to put them on properly. Any ideas on how else I can reset it? Please let me know ASAP as it is critical to fix these things.
========================================================
If problem is in hock joint the most likely thing is a displaced Achilles tendon. This tendon connects
muscles above the joint to the bone below the joint delivering the power to stand, walk and run.
You can easily see if this is the problem by looking at the chick from the rear and comparing the
good leg with the bad.
The cause for this is injury, sometimes when chick has a hard time pushing itself from eggshell
or if it is stepped on by mother hen or other chick.
If the problem is found right after it happened the tendon can be pushed back to the center
of the joint by a gentle squeeze between your thumb and finger. But if the chick has had a
day or two of struggling then swelling in joint makes it hard for tendon to stay in place so
that a "chick chair" must be constructed and used.
You can send photo to my email address--a close up of the injured joint taken from the rear.
Sincerely

HERE IS WHAT I PUT IN THAT EMAIL:
Lydia,
Am not quite certain but am guessing that if injury really is at hip
joint it is "straddle legs" also called spraddle legs or splay legs.
If this is the problem it can be repaired with a hobble brace
which is just a piece of tape connecting legs just above ankle
level.
But if injury is at hock joint then the Achilles tendon is out of
place and needs to be put back (this happens if chick has hard
time kicking loose from eggshell)
Another thing that could be wrong is a twisted tibia (the same bone
found in KFC "drumstick")
A closeup photo of this chick's leg could help me understand
what to tell you.
Photo can NOT be posted on this website but you can send directly to my email address or posted on a photo storage website
with a link posted on my website.

I have sent you an email. You can reply to that email and
