Anyone who has kids will tell you the same thing....they buy things because of peer pressure, not advertising. This is true for most ages between teens and late 20's. For example, my kids all had MP3 players years before the IPOD, not because of ads, but simply because their friends had one (the MP3 players were RIO's I believe). The same is true for their sneakers, backpacks, clothes, etc. As the they grew older, the pressure to look, dress and have possesions identical to their friends became stronger. The coveted items were almost always unadvertised.

As far as we baby boomers are concerned, let me tell you this, we pay more attention to ads than our kids for two reasons. First, because we are looking for the best value for our money and second, because (as a group) we control a large amount cash. The difference may be that we see through shallow and deceptive advertising much more easily than our kids.

So...things are not what they seem, at least when you compare the real world to the mind's eye of the ad execs. Times have changed. I have not become my father. Middle age is not as old as it used to be.
