A fantastic year? So many complaints about quality this year … but I think it IS a fantastic year competitively.
If you were not a fan of beauty pageants before, or more particularly, of the Miss Universe pageant, this is a fantastic year to truly get into it. Just like other legendary years (such as my absolute favorite of 1996), this year is filled with extraordinary delegates in one way … or another.
Not only do we have some stunning beauties, we also have very unusual beauties, who are starting to break stereotypes of pageant beauty; some are short, others are a little overweight, and some are just simply not the kind of woman that you would expect at the Miss Universe pageant. This is a great thing for women.
What is true is that we are in for a treat and, fingers crossed, perhaps a year of surprises. So far, after completing the first official week of activities, and having less than two more weeks to go, some ladies are starting to build up some momentum, and are claiming the position of early favorites. Misses Netherlands, Australia, Dominican Republic and Czech Republic are considered by many to be the clear front runners of the competition, followed not so far by the delegates of France, South Africa, Iceland and Mexico.
The stories behind some of these front runners are not dull. Take for instance Miss Australia, Rachel Finch, a lady that could easily make it to the front covers of any fashion magazine around the world; her beauty is classic and her presence is unique, but even she has gone through moments of uncertainty, especially when she made the main headlines in her country by publically complaining about the stiffness of the Miss Australia contract that she had signed the night of her crowning.
Or perhaps we should see a story of true perseverance, courtesy of Miss Dominican Republic; Ada Aime de la Cruz. She is well known for those who are in the pageant circuit; this would be at least her fifth major pageant. After having competed in Miss Dominican Republic Universe once before (which she lost to the stunning Massiel Tavares), she tried for the Miss Dominican Republic World title and won it. This lead her to the Miss World 2007 pageant where she won the Beach Beauty fast track into the semifinals but she did not crack a position among the finalists and lost the Miss Caribbean title to Miss Trinidad & Tobago. She then decided to try again for the Miss Dominican Republic Universe title, winning it by a landslide, and here she is today.
We could also take, for example, the story of Miss Mexico, Karla Carrillo. Having won to a rather competitive batch of stunners in Nuestra Belleza, Karla wasn’t seen as the right choice for Mexico in Miss Universe - at first glance, especially since she left the greater fan favorite as the 1st runner up. Time would prove the jury’s decision right, for not only Karla has managed to shine on her own, but also the first runner up from that edition, Laura Zuniga, ended up in jail later that year in one of the most publicized scandals in the history of beauty pageants in Mexico. Aside from all that, Miss Carrillo also suffered the consequences of living the public life, where gossip news in Mexico suddenly announced that Karla could loose her title due to indiscipline. It all ended up being fixed behind closed doors, and now, Karla is among the favorites in the Miss Universe Pageant.
The story of Miss France is also quite interesting; Chloe Mortaud came out of nowhere in the finals of the Miss France pageant and literally took it all. To the initial surprise of many French and international fans, this choice was probably the biggest blessing for the French organization as now Chloe is considered one of the best prepared and most spontaneous delegates in this year’s Miss Universe pageant. But the win for this Miss France did not come without a price. Chloe is the first lady to win her country’s title holding a dual citizenship, since her mother hails from Mississippi, in the USA. The problems for Miss France did not originate from her dual citizenship though, but from a lady called Marine Beaury, whom she defeated in a regional contest to become Miss Albigeois mid-Pyrénées. Marine claimed to have been cheated out of winning the title herself, a victim of “cronyism” because Ms Mortaud’s parents had worked with members of the jury. Sour grapes, perhaps? But later, Miss Guadeloupe also made public criticism against Chloe, saying that during France’s finals, she had caused her to trip in an embarrassing way. Still no matter what was alleged, Chloe was able to keep her title of Miss France and she is shinning at it.
This just proves that this year will be incredibly competitive. All these ladies have already won their own battles, one way or another, and right now, they are all fighting against each other to conquer the one and only crown of Miss Universe 2009. But who will be at the end?
I guess you will need to stay tuned and see, because in this edition, I really think that anything could be possible.
