Many young people of good character make mistakes. I am thinking of one I know who was recently arrested for DUI. He has lost his job and his life is impacted so detrimentally from his mistake. This is a problem everywhere, along with minor drug offenses, but Dearborn County has become so punitive that I don't think we have any viable people left to hire here with a clean record. I'm not sure there is an alternative to vigorous arrests and prosecutions, but many of these gainfully employed people will go on to be welfare recipients after losing their jobs.
No businesses want to locate where there is no work force. Is our County too overzealous in the way they prosecute first offenses? I know this is an unpopular thing to say, but is there ever a time to just "drive them home" or leave them in jail for the night?
