Subject: Annoying Phone calls to enquire of voting preferences

The calls come rolling in at dinner time. They are on a fishing expedition to see how you're gonna vote.
It is so cruel, but I'm in a crabby mood.
It was so fun to say I approve of Obama and how he is doing his job. Doesn't matter if it's true or false.
I could hear the pregnant silence. This encouraged me to torment him further, making other choices he asked about fully knowing he would be glad to hang up the phone and not call back if I'm lucky. Then we get to the grand crescendo of local candidates. I'm sick of politics.

Furthermore, why are minors listed who were unregistered and ineligible and their names shared with neighbors? Do you want your minor kids names shared this way?

This being another big election year we have many candidates to research at the local level. There has been numerous occasions to meet the candidates and hear them speak. I for one have not been able to go to all of them as I am busy raising a family like everyone else. We have many candidates that have held several different positions in this local government or have served on various government boards and councils. I try to make my decisions based on as many facts and factors I can learn about them. These candidates that so proudly tout all the various boards they have served on should have a voting record on that service. Why don't they campaign(especially) the incumbents on their voting records? Why is it that we don't blog about verifiable facts like a voting record? And ask the challenging candidate how they would have voted and why? The big issues around here seem to always elude public disputation. Shouldn't the candidates stand by their record of service and be held accountable for why they voted a certain way on a controversial issue? Questions for the incumbents should be largely based off their votes to give us a good objective reason to re-elect them if we the people feel they voted in our best interest. Many in this county feel that the elected ARE NOT REPRESENTING us they are in it for themselves. Well, lets get the voting records out and see who voted for the jail expansion and who didn't. Who voted for the Event Center and who if anyone was against it. I listened to one Commissioner Candidate's flypod interview and he was obviously qualified with the right education and experience but no mention of his voting record and or no mention of what specific impact his service on all these boards he has been on has had. It makes one beg the question why should I vote for you? Your statement about all the "great" work that has been done with redevelopment board? Ok, great now what great work was he referring too? What specific project or deal has positively impacted us? I am sure there ARE positive impacts but I'd like them to articulate the impacts. What objective data did they use to base their decisions on votes they made?

Arguably the most important factor in voting for one's own representation is the character factor. Someone with a strong character that is honorable, honest, principle not political, firm but fair-minded should be of the highest regard. I know for me personally that is how I vote.(on character, experience, and education.)One way to discern a candidates character is taking a look at his campaign donors, because it is true birds of a feather DO flock together. Anyone can talk a good talk but a voting record speaks louder than words.

I have read, read, and reread all of the comments on here as well as listened to all of the debates with regard to the election of a new Dearborn County Coroner. It seems as though there are alot of unknowns with this department. I have made it my mission to educate myself to the best of my ability as to how this department works so as to make the most informed decision I can come Election Day. I would like to share the information with the readers of this forum as well to hopefully help in their decision.

The best analogy I can give is the Coroner is to the Coroner's Dept. like the Sheriff is to the Sheriff's Dept. I know this may not be the best comparison, however it's the closest I could come up with. The Coroner's Department is made up of the Coroner, Chief Deputy Coroner (whom both earn a straight salary), and a team of Deputy Coroner's whose pay is based on per run. Currently, from what I've been told there is 1 Chief Deputy Coroner and approximately 7 Deputy Coroner's 4 of which actively make quite a bit of runs. Yes, the Coroner does respond to calls however not all the time. This is when his and/or her team of qualified deputies come into play and take calls. I can not say with any amount of certainty of the plans with which Tracy Cochran or Joe Ridgeway have on keeping the current deputies in place, I do know that Steve Callahan has stated that he plans to keep at least 3 of the current (maybe more) deputies on staff if he is elected one of which will be appointed his chief deputy. Whose role is by the way to step in, in times of absence of the Coroner. As I've stated I've heard many of the comments and debates made by the candidates and so far the best response I heard was when the question was asked of the candidates what they would do in the instance of a mass casualty involving an airplane. The only one who gave a resons which made any sense was Steve Callahan. Tracy and Joe were talking about triaging and getting all that set up. Steve actally talked about enlisting the help of other department's and tending to the investigation of the deceased. It's Fire and EMS's job to worry about triaging and tending to the injured not the Coroner's. We need to make sure that whomever we elect in this position has a competent team in place, as it's just not the elected Coroner going to be making some of the calls, and as I stated the only one I know of who has stated he intends on keeping those seasoned Deputy Coroner's on board is Steve Callahan. I have no affiliation with any of the candidates just making my own observations.

Now I believe then it was just a pay check, but now you have become one of them. You do not care about the truth, what is right or wrong, just or unjust. You care nothing about our constitutional rights or proving the burden of guilt. You don't have to, you go on manufactured evidence and present it as fact. You have become one of them. Shame Shame! You can go to your priest every week and repent, but I do not believe it is going to make a difference come judgement day for any of you. You will all be judged one day by a much higher power, and your penalties will last forever!

A $600,000.00 bond was placed on him for what? Posting a blog about an elected official? This entire case smells and I for one am glad Mr. Brewington is fighting his conviction and exposing what occurred to bright sunlight. There are many citizens who would not do the same. At the end of the day the entire mess will be exposed for what it is: a witch hunt by elected officials against a citizen who would not bow to their capricious handling of his case. BRAVO TO YOU MR. Kudos to the County for implementing the burn ban. It allows enforcement for certain repeated fires that occur at same residences. It is hard for ALL of us to obey this (we too have lots of pasture debris to clear), but you have saved us from the people with no judgement. Elderly neighbor just set some stuff off, not realizing how dry it is. It was getting really out of hand and quite a workout to get under control-no phone near-couldn't leave it unattended. A link to a letter to Mr. Witte, Executive Secretary of the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, regarding the missing transcripts from Dan Brewington's case.

This transcript issue is extremely important to the judicial process. Dan Brewington could spend more time in jail because some appealable issue was not able to be made because there were “no hearings” and therefore “no transcripts.” Pursuant to the Access to Public Records Act (Ind. Code 5-14-3), I made another public records request for the tapes of the two “missing” hearings on August 7, 2012. I have not gotten a response yet. If Judge Blankenship is short staffed I don’t think adding more prisoners in an expanded jail is going to help the situation. Maybe more people need to request tapes and transcripts from this office. Unfortunately “mistakes” are made and the public being aware could be our last chance to demand that the system works.

We continue to work to let people know about the potential danger to freedom of political speech in Indiana. It is now before the Indiana Appeals Court.

Date Posted: 10:49:23 06/29/12 Fri

Woodrow Wilson (1887) called for the work of government to be done with "the utmost possible efficiency and the least possible cost either in money or energy." Wilson was, for all intensive purposes, calling for the same mechanization of government that was taking place in industry at the time. The idea of Scientific Management was the foundation of this drive for mechanization, and people like Henry Ford were using these principles to change the world. I feel they can be used to fix our local government in Dearborn County.
One need only study the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana for the example. A study of the City and Graham Richard will tell you all you need to know. Richard was elected mayor of Fort Wayne in 1999. With a population of around 200,000 Fort Wayne, was(is) the 2nd largest city in the state of Indiana. Richard was dedicated to the idea of using Lean Six Sigma to transform the way the City operated.
Lean is a modern manufacturing method that uses time and motions studies to improve efficiency. Six Sigma is a statistical process control system that uses the scientific method to eliminate errors and improve quality. Lean Six Sigma, a hybrid of both systems, is the modern incarnation of Taylor's idea. Lean Six Sigma calls for the use of the DMAIC cycle. DMAIC stands for: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control. The DMAIC cycle is clearly in keeping with Taylor's ideal.
Richard rolled out his program in February of 2000. He pushed to rewrite job descriptions to allow for cross-functionality, and pushed waves of city employees through training. He called for 10-20% of trained employees time and corresponding city resources to be spent on improvement projects. Within three years the City had twenty employees trained as Expert "Black belts" and forty mid-level "Green belts."
The training and concentrated effort worked. Within four years, the City was able to save over $3 million dollars through sixty successful projects in every department in the city. The City was able to increase fire inspections by 23% without adding manpower. Potholes that once took days or weeks to repair, now took less than 24 hours in 77% of cases. Complaint calls to the parks and recreation department were down 33%. Before the project it took an average of fifty days to get a building permit and that time was reduced to twelve days. Other projects addressed community development, water pollution, traffic control, and solid waste. Using the modern incarnation of Taylors theory, Fort Wayne has decreased cost, improved services, provided better stewardship of the public trust, and empowered its workforce.
Dearborn County needs this type of change. The City of Fort Wayne, Indiana provides an illustration of the theories relevance in today's public sector organization. The core of Taylor's principles are clearly still being used today. Yet, Taylor would not recognize today's Scientific management. The worker is no longer a mindless drown, but an integral part of the formulation of the work they do. The Chinese have a proverb that states, "tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand." Fort Wayne illustrates how today's Scientific Management can improve both outcomes for the organization and the overall employee experience at the same time. This County is wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars every year, and it must stop! I believe it's time we all call on our local government to bring Lean-Six Sigma to Dearborn County.

I am starting to see how some of the practices and policies in the courts can be affecting the budget for the jail as well. Besides the money issues, there are also issues of fairness. I'd like to know what else is going on in our courts that we taxpayers don't see. Was Brewington's case an anomoly or does that happen more than we think?

6000 words had to be taken out of the original Appellant Brief because the Indiana Appellate Court denied his Motion For Leave To File Oversized Brief. Some of the points include: Constitutional Limitations on Intimidation, Erroneous Instructions to the Jury, Ineffective Counsel, Insufficient Evidence, Improper use of an Anonymous Jury, and Evidentiary Errors. It also mentions Prosecutor F. Aaron Negangard's improper conduct concerning the charge of perjury.

Can anyone explain to me why it is taking so long to get the Doug Taylor case to court? He was charged with and admitted to 2 felonies yet he is sitting on city council. How does one violate the law in an effort to get elected....then admit you did it and still get to be on council? Oh I forgot he is with the police and they can do what ever they want. Silly me!

The following are excepts from BAIL IS BUSTED: HOW JAIL REALLY WORKS, by Nick Pinto (Village Voice/The New York Times April 25, 2012)

....It is a central tenet of American justice that as arrests enter the court system, people are innocent until they are proved guilty. But the open secret of criminal courts is that there simply aren't enough judges, prosecutors, and hours in the day to give each of these defendants a fair chance to prove their innocence, to challenge the evidence against them, and to mount a defense.

If even a fraction of those presumed innocent fought their cases in court, the system would grind to a halt. To keep things moving, judges and prosecutors need defendants to plead guilty to something as early in the process as possible. And the single most powerful tool to extract a guilty plea is the threat of bail.

Bail can only legitimately be set for one reason: to ensure that a defendant will return to court for his or her next hearing. But everyone who works in criminal justice knows that's not what's going on at all....

First lady Michelle Obama's 2010 trip to Spain cost taxpayers nearly $470,000, according to a conservative watchdog group that obtained Secret Service records from the overseas excursion.

That trip, which the first lady took with her younger daughter Sasha, drew widespread criticism at the time -- as the visuals of the first lady in an elegant Mediterranean setting clashed with the still-struggling U.S. economy.

Judicial Watch, which filed a Freedom of Information Act request, claimed Thursday that documents show the trip cost at least $467,585.

Something caught my eye the other day: Pat Robertson, the high priest of the religious right, had some startling things to say about drugs.
"I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol," Mr. Robertson said in a recent interview. "I've never used marijuana and I don't intend to, but it's just one of those things that I think. This war on drugs just hasn't succeeded."
The reason Robertson is for legalizing marijuana is that it has created a prison problem in America that is well beyond what most Americans imagine.
"It's completely out of control," Mr. Robertson said. "Prisons are being overcrowded with juvenile offenders having to do with drugs. And the penalties - the maximums - some of them could get 10 years for possession of a joint of marijuana. It makes no sense at all."
He’s right. Here are the numbers: The total number of Americans under correctional supervision (prison, parole, etc.) is 7.1 million, more than the entire state of Massachusetts. Adam Gopnik writes in the New Yorker, "Over all, there are now more people under 'correctional supervision' in America...than were in the Gulag Archipelago under Stalin at its height."
No other country comes even close to our rates of incarceration. We have 760 prisoners per 100,000 people. Most European countries have one seventh that number (per capita, so it's adjusted for population). Even those on the high end of the global spectrum - Brazil and Poland - have only a quarter the number we do.
If you say this is some kind of enduring aspect of America's "Wild West" culture, you would be wrong. In 1980, our rates of incarceration were a quarter what they are now. What changed was the war on drugs and the mindless proliferation of laws that created criminal penalties for anything and everything. If you don’t believe me, listen to Pat Roberston again. Here's a quote:
"We here in America make up 5% of the world's population, but we make up 25% of jailed prisoners....We have now over 3,000 - the number must be might higher than that - but over 3,000 federal crimes, and every time the liberals pass a bill - I don't care what it involves - they stick criminal sanctions on it. They don't feel there is any way people are going to keep a law unless they can put them in jail.... So we have the jails filled with people who are white collar criminals.
In the past two decades, the money that states spend on prisons has risen at six times the rate of spending on higher education. In 2011, California spent $9.6 billion on prisons, versus $5.7 billion on higher education. Since 1980, California has built one college campus; it's built 21 prisons. The state spends $8,667 per student per year. It spends about $50,000 per inmate per year.
Why is this happening? Prisons are a big business. Most are privately run. They have powerful lobbyists and they have bought most state politicians. Meanwhile, we are bankrupting out states and creating a vast underclass of prisoners who will never be equipped for productive lives.

To the Editor:
Attention freedom-loving Hoosiers: Did you know that current law allows a sewer district to force you to connect and pay their fees, even if your septic system is in good working order? There is a bill in the Indiana General Assembly this year that would change that.
House Bill 1225 would allow you a free choice in connecting to a sewer, as long as your septic system is functioning properly. This important bill has a committee hearing set for this Wednesday, January 18.
Contact your state representative and make your voice heard for the cause of freedom. The telephone number for the State House switchboard is 800-382-9842. You can send an email in support of HB 1225 by going to www.in.gov or you can write your representative at the Indiana House of Representatives - 200 W. Washington St. - Indianapolis, IN 46204.
You can also sign a statewide petition online opposing mandatory sewer connection by going to http://indianafreedoms.org on the web.

can anyone tell me why the gas prices in dearbon county are
so much higher that anywhere else around us? we have been keeping track of the prices and dearborn county is always always higher, why. the excuse used to be that we were in the cincinnati market and they have smog issues so there price was always higher well what is the excuse now, cincinnati, northern ky, ripley county, everyone is cheaper
does not add up. could it be that most of dearborn county residents have to drive through dearborn county to get to work, because as we all know the good paying jobs are not around here u have to drive to cincy or no ky to get a good paying job. please pay attention and you will notice the same things we have dearborn county gas prices suck!
