Subject: Alcohol Tax Bill On Beacon Hill

There is currently a bill on Beacon Hill to add a 5% tax on alcohol that is sold in Massachusettes. This bill, if passed will help in funding drug and alcoholic treatment programs for those individuals that need it. The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Colleen Garry.
My issue with the bill if passed, is the decrease in sales at the establishments that sell alcohol. Dracut has numerous stores that already lose business due to lower prices in New Hampshire. People do not just go to the store to buy alcohol, they pick up other items while they are there. They just pick them up in New Hampshire. For those who don't make that trip over the border, with the tax added on, you bet they will make that trip. More money into New Hampshire, less money into Dracuts and other surrounding towns establishments that border NH.
Secondly, alcohol is a drug. People choose to do it. We the tax payers will have to pay for their problems. Shouldn't we think about taking the treatment fees out of the individuals social security. You know, be responsible for the actions you have taken.
