PUEBLO, Colo. (June 16, 2009) — The ongoing violence in Mexico has impacted the life of one of the PBR's own.
On Monday afternoon, at approximately 4 p.m. local time, Rocky McDonald's uncle, Merdith Romney, was kidnapped just outside of Janos, Chihuahua. Romney is an American citizen.
"We're still waiting for the ransom call," said an obviously subdued McDonald, in a late-night interview.
According to what little information is known at this time, McDonald said that Romney and another family member, perhaps one of his two sons, were leaving their ranch when the truck they were riding in was cut off by another vehicle waiting out on the main road.
The gunmen shot out the tires of Romney's truck. For reasons that are unclear, the men were only interested in Romney. After forcing him into the other vehicle, the gunmen sped off in a direction away from town.
"This is a tragic event that has taken place" said PBR CEO Randy Bernard. "Mexico is a great country and it's sad to see this happening.
"The PBR is committed to doing whatever it is we can to help Rocky and his family."
Romney, who is the brother of McDonald's mother, is president of an organization that oversees the tracking down of cattle thieves. It has yet to be determined whether the kidnapping is any way associated with the recent prosecution of cattle rustlers.
According to McDonald, calls have been placed to Chihuahua governor Jose Reyes Baeza Terraza, and the Federales along with the FBI are working to track down the gunmen and locate Romney.
Bernard has been in contact with Gov. Baeza, who is also committed to helping secure the safe return of McDonald's uncle.
The family remains optimistic that he will be safely released from captivity, and are hoping anyone from the area with any knowledge of the situation will come forward with the information.
They're also asking anyone with political connections to either the American or Mexican governments to contact those persons to make them aware of the situation.
"We're hoping to know more today," said McDonald, who is planning to travel 100 miles from his ranch in Col. Juarez to Janos.
Chihuahua is a state in northern Mexico — bordering Texas and New Mexico — with a total population of 3.2 million residents, and is known for its namesake the Chihuahuan Desert.
The state of Chihuahua played a historically pivotal role in the Mexican Revolution and was a battleground between revolutionary forces led by Poncho Villa and federal forces.

Is this the same Chihuahua that holds the PBR event? Maybe the PBR needs to think about the kidnappings of Americans before scheduling another event down there. What do ya'll think?? Please keep Rocky and his family in your prayers.

With all of the gangs and the drug wars going on in Mexico, I wouldn't travel there for love or money right now. Some of these drug wars have made their way into Texas and its just not good. I too think the PBR needs to seriously rethink having an event in Mexico until their government regains control of that country. I know that's not fair the good folks there in Mexico that love bull riding but safety has to be the PBR's first concern.

I saw on The Breeders Connection that Rocky Mcdonald's uncle had been released and was safe. No official word from PBR, will keep praying for the family.
