NYC Event Info -- Debbie, Thu, Jan 08 2009, 17:14:19 [2]

Thought you all might like to see what's going on this weekend in NYC in conjunction with the PBR.

PUEBLO, Colo. (January 7, 2009) - New York City … the city that never sleeps.

The Big Apple is the media capital of the world, so it’s no surprise that with the Built Ford Tough Invitational starting Friday night at famed Madison Square Garden, the PBR is receiving an extraordinary amount of exposure this week.

Several of the Top 45 riders in the world are already in New York.

Reese Cates, the 2008 Daisy Rookie of the Year, wrote in his weekly blog – posted here on www.pbrnow.com – that that he’ll be making an appearance tonight at The Garden during an NHL game featuring the Montreal Canadiens and the hometown Rangers.

Tomorrow morning Cates will join Randy Bernard and J.B. Mauney in ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock exchange.

The 21-year-old from Arkansas is also appearing on the Rachael Ray Show along with Cord McCoy and Luke Snyder, who was the subject of a feature story in The New York Times that appeared on the cover of the sports section.

Cates so impressed producers of Ray’s show during a pre-taping in Baltimore that “producers called [him] to come in early to record some extra stuff.

“Between going to Rachael’s show and the Rangers game, that’s pretty exciting,” continued Cates, who until now has never been to New York City. “The game is a pretty cool deal because I’ll get a feel for what Madison Square Garden is like with that much energy in it.”

Earlier this week, the Sports Museum of America (26 Broadway) unveiled a display dedicated to the PBR that featured memorabilia from Michael Gaffney and Chris Shivers, among others.

In addition to the pre-event festivities, www.espn.com is planning daily coverage of the three-day event.

During a PBR podcast posted earlier today at www.pbr.tv, Melanie Jarrett, associate editor of ESPN’s bull riding page, said, “We’re sending a team of writers to New York to cover the event.”

The second event of the 2009 season can be seen this weekend on Versus at 8 p.m. EST on both Saturday and Sunday night.

Vegas -- Bec kie, Tue, Nov 18 2008, 3:04:50 [2]

Well I have had some time since our trip to Vegas. We had a great time. Over all the PBR did a really good job with everything.
Congratulations to our new Champion, Marchi !!
We got to see some really good rides... Adraino's party was really nice. He loved the scrapbook that Kris made for him.. We really like the South Point hotel. They handled the parties really nicely. I would bet they get more of the PBR stuff next year.
We got to meet some of the good folks from our website and made some new friends.

We took alot of pictures. We are getting them all together and Ill post them soon. If any of you have pictures you want on the board just send them to us.

Start thinking about your new team for our Fantasy Game for 2009! You can send us your teams anytime before the first event. We are going to do some new things this year so you will have to keep checking in. If you have any idea ...just let us know and we will talk them over.

I'm looking forward to a great year!

Well I've been home from Vegas for 2 whole weeks now and I think finally I'm recovered. That was the best finals I have ever been to. The rides those guy made night after night were beyond amazing. Cody Lambert did a great job of lining up the bulls this year. As for Adriano's retirement party, it was awesome. The folks at the PBR did a great job of organizing this one. It was a very emotional event though. I think everyone shed a tear or two. I was so happy to be able to give Adriano the scrapbooks we all put together for him. And in true Adriano fashion, he got choked up while he was looking through them. We ran into Flavia the next afternoon at the Mandalay Bay and she told me that they poured over them the night before after the bull riding and that they all loved them. Thank you to everyone who sent in pages and/or pictures to be added to the books. Your contributions helped to make these books great and I couldn't have done it without all of you. The South Point is a really great hotel/casino. Very nice rooms, everything in the hotel is easy to get to and a lot of the cowboy and their families hung out there a lot. I had such a wonderful time getting to meet new people (Aund Judy and others) and visit with those of you that I have not seen in a very long time. Especially my dear friend Beckie Jane! I'm so glad we got to spend time together, it's been way too long. Despite not winning a single penny during my time in Vegas I still came home with great memories of having a wonderful time.

Justin McBride: Game over
Two-time World Champion Justin McBride has decided to call it a career

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 21, 2008) - At a press conference this afternoon in Las Vegas, two-time World Champion Justin McBride announced his retirement from professional bull riding.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that was going to happen,” said Brendon Clark, a close friend of McBride. “I’ve known for a long, long time now that that was going to happen. It was just something that he discussed with all his buddies.”

Added Mike White, “Most of the guys knew. It’s not surprising to me.”

After winning last year’s world title – the second of his career – McBride sat out the first six months of the just-completed Built Ford Tough Series. Competing in just seven regular-season events, the Oklahoma cowboy won two event titles – Tulsa and Nashville – and easily qualified for the upcoming PBR World Finals.

“He’s going out when he can still ride every single bull in the world,” Clark said, “and ride the rankest bulls in the world. There will be no doubt in his mind that the day he says he doesn’t want to do it anymore, which will be the last round of the Finals, that he can come back at any time still be able to do it.

“But he wants quit when he’s still the best, and that’s the big thing, I think. It’s the same reason Ty Murray retired. He didn’t think he could do it at the level he wanted to anymore. He quit because he wanted to be able to do it better than anybody else.”

One of the most decorated bull riders in PBR history, the defending World Champ recently crossed the $5 million mark in career earnings in September, making him the richest cowboy in history.

In his 10-year career, McBride has set an extensive list of records, including 32 career event wins; the most money earned in a single season ($1,835,321); and eight single season event wins, among many others.

“He’s not the kind of person to say I’m retiring and then get all the media behind it, have everyone talk about it and then at the last minute come back in six months because everyone thinks he can,” Clark said.

“When he says he’s finished, he’s finished, because that’s the way Justin McBride is. He doesn’t do anything haphazardly.

“He’s definitely not going to change his mind,” Clark continued. “He knew he wanted to quit and this was the time, so I know you won’t see Justin McBride get on another bull again after the eighth round of the PBR World Finals.”

Log back in to www.pbrnow.com to hear the audio of an exclusive one-on-one interview with McBride.

Fellow riders react to the news:

Michael Gaffney: “I’m happy for him, but disappointed for the sport. He’s not going away, I don’t think, but at the same time, to not have him actively riding is a drag for our fans and, quite frankly, those guys in the locker room. But I’m really happy for him and his family because of the danger that’s involved in this business, and he’s a guy that never says die.”

J.B. Mauney: “I mean, you gotta hand it to him. He’s going out on top and he’s still riding good. I don’t know, really. I wouldn’t if I was him, but it’s a lot different, because he’s got a family and everything and he’s a lot older than I am. You can kind of tell he’s ready to go home. … He’s a really good friend of mine and he’s always good to have around the bull ridings, because you can’t act like a sissy when he’s around. He kind of stays on your butt about being a cowboy, and now he won’t be there to do that.”

Kody Lostroh: “He’s definitely made his mark in the world of bull riding. I know he still really likes riding bulls, but he’s got a family going now too, so his priorities have changed a little bit, I guess. It’s good that he’s getting to quit on top of his game and not hanging around so long that the sport makes him leave.”

L.J. Jenkins: “Holy cow—I would have never thought that he would do that. I figured Adriano being a three-time World Champ, that he’d want to do the same. We’ve all seen he can do that any day, and that’s kind of what I was figuring. I thought once he became a two-time World Champ that he might think about it, but I never saw it coming now.”

Mike White: “I look at it from a family perspective. … Justin’s made a really good living in a short period of time and he’s got a family. He wants to retire and spend time with his family…he’s made a lot of money and he’s at the point where he can retire and enjoy life with his family.”

Chris Shivers: “I think that’s a great decision. Bull riding is something that if you have experienced it you’ll know enough is enough. Whenever you feel like your dreams are fulfilled and then you don’t really want to do it anymore, then it’s not worth getting hurt over.”

Luke Snyder: “Shoot, in this game everybody knows when they’re done. He obviously knows that he doesn’t have the desire that he once did or may not—ah, that guy could win so many more world championships. He’s still young. He could still come back anytime he wanted to and just dominate. Everybody has a point when they’re done with it and he’s obviously pretty well set up.”

Sean Willingham: “He’s that good that he can retire at a young age because he’s won so much already. It’ll be good for him and, I guess, he’s going to pursue his country music and go from there. I’m sure he’ll still be around the bull riding world, but he’s going to be missed. I’m dang sure going to just miss him as a friend. It’s going to be different, and you’re not going to get to compete against one of the best bull riders of all time. … I guess he’s just done with it. We’re going to miss him and, I don’t know, you can’t really say too much.”

Reese Cates: “With Adriano and Justin McBride retiring the same year as my rookie season—that’s crazy. It’s something that I’ll always remember, that I came on tour and I got to ride against the legends for one year before they’re gone. Yeah, that’s something to me and I’m just glad I got to come along this year instead of next year. I’m honored to be at their level and I wish McBride would be hanging around a little bit longer so I could have the chance to compete against him some more.”

Dustin Elliott: “He’s hit $5 million, he’s won two world titles, he’s rich and he doesn’t have to worry about money—why not? But honestly, the guy’s an outstanding, phenomenal bull rider and him retiring just gives me that much more of a chance to win some money myself. I mean, the guy went to (seven) events this year and he won two of them. That’s just amazing. I like the competition and I like the money too. … He’s had some injuries with the broken leg, the collapsed lung and then the shoulder. He’s 29-years-old and he’s got enough money, so why not save your health? He’s accomplished everything there is to accomplish in bull riding, so what else is there other than save your health and raise your family?”

Lee Akin -- Beckie, Fri, Oct 03 2008, 4:07:57 [2]

18 month after Leeʼs Accident

Hey there guys!!! Thank you so much for your continued prayers for our family. I must say, from day 1 doctors told us that Lee's progress would plateu at 1 year. It's a year and a half after Lee's accident and he is still progressing EVERY DAY!!! I can't remember last time I wrote, but it's been awhile. In February I ran my first marathon, it was so symbolic to the whole past year. Right when you think you're going to die, pretty sure you can't go any further, you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, keep pressing in and sure enough it passes. This race may not have passed, and may never pass, but we keep putting one foot in front of the other.
In march, Lee, Jada and I went back to Montgomery, AL 1 year after the accident. 3 doctors used the word "miracle" WAHOO, if doctors of all people can't get the glory, you know it's ONLY God.
Where are we now??
This last week we shipped Lee off to St. Petersburg, Flordia where he is doing a 6 week intensive speech therapy program, specifically for aphasia (the speech problem he has). Jada and I went for the first week to settle him in. One extra praise, we had been wanting to go on a vacation really bad but just couldn't make it happen financially and here Lee is going to therapy in Florida on the beach!
Lee's therapy is 5 hours every day!! Phew.... so far he gets back to his place pretty tired every day. I will go back the end of Oct./beg. Nov. to bring him home.
PLEASE PLEASE join me in prayer, we are believing and expecting that Lee will have 500% success in this speech program and his tongue will be loosed to speech and too tell His story. I'm also training for my second marathon this November. :-)
Thanks,
Akin Family

PBR Finals Tickets For Sale -- Kris, Tue, Sep 23 2008, 21:02:48 [1]

Hi everyone. My friend Robyn had purchased tickets for the PBR Finals for the last two nights, the 8th and the 9th of November in hopes what she would be able to go. Well as it turns out with the Presidential Election the week prior to the finals she will not be able to go. And needless to say she is really bummed about that. I’m hoping to be able to sell her tickets for her. Her are for the following seats:

Saturday, November 8th – Section 209, Row K, Seat 7, Portal 19

Sunday, November 9th – Section 209, Row K, Seat 11, Portal 20

Robyn is selling them at face value which is $41.00 each. Please let me know if you are interested in these tickets. As we all know, the last 2 rounds of the finals usually are the best. We can either mail the tickets to you or I will bring them with me to Las Vegas. I will try to take a picture of the tickets and get them up on the This & That page of our website soon.

Click Here for a seating diagram of Thomas and Mack for the finals.

Ross Johnson and The Step Munster -- Kris, Thu, Sep 18 2008, 17:55:41 [2]

Not sure if many of you know this or not but Ross' Step Munster - Sonya and his dad live in the Houston area. I had tried several times to call Sonya and Bobby to check on them after Ike went through TX but was unable to reach them. I did however get to talk to Ross on Tuesday night. Sonya and Bobby are fine, no major damage but they are still without power. Ross is doing great, as is Abby and Jaydee Lynn. Ross had just gotten back from the doctor having his knee looked at. He said he hurt it in Pendelton and the sports medicine guys there told him that he'd more than likely torn his ACL and MCL. Well Ross and family got good news on Tuesday, no tears! He did sprain his knee and has a deep bone bruise. He sounded really good and positive and is looking forward to riding again soon. I know there are some of you out there that are fans of Ross' and figured you might like a little update on him.

Take care and have a FABULOUS day!

P.S. - Only 47 days until we leave for Vegas and the PBR Finals! Yeah, you could say I'm a little bit excited about that.

P.S.S. I'll have the Grand Rapids scores posted today. : )

Please keep Kouben and his family in your prayers, they've got a long road ahead of them. Per the Journal on this website Kouben is starting to have movement in both of his arms...there's proof that prayer works!

Last Trading Peroid! -- Beckie, Mon, Aug 18 2008, 21:53:23 [6]

We will take trades now for the last trading peroid. You can trade one Cowboy and one Sub...they must be lower in the standings than the one your trading away. If your cowboy is not in the top 45 you may pick a trade for him from the 35th place down.. Our game ends at the end of the regular season.
Good Luck!

Not sure if you all have read this or not but I just found it this morning on the PBR website.

Canter Sidelined for Six to Eight Weeks
PUEBLO, Colo. (August 5, 2008) - Young PBR superstar Brian Canter (Randleman, N.C.) was injured on Sunday, August 3, 2008 in Paso Robles, Calif., during the second stop of the PBR Team Shootout presented by Ford Trucks. Canter had successfully ridden the bull, Hummer (Steve Cosca Bucking Bulls) for 88.5 points in the fourth section of competition when he was jerked down and stepped on as he was trying to dismount. He was knocked unconscious and received a 6 to 7-inch laceration to the back of his head. He also received a broken jaw from the impact of hitting the ground.
Canter was taken to a local Paso Robles hospital where he received treatment for the head laceration. He was then transferred to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif., for surgery where a plate was inserted in his jaw and then wired shut. Six to eight weeks is the expected recovery time.
According to doctors, Canter is recovering well and is scheduled to fly home to North Carolina today for recuperation. He will be out of competition for six to eight weeks and is expected to return to the Built Ford Tough Series in Jacksonville, Fla.

Here’s wishing Brian a very speedy recovery!

I really hate to see this report:

Justin McBride sustained a concussion, strained neck, and facial and oral lacerations when he was pulled down during a reride, his head colliding with the bull's head, and was thrown hard to the ground. The lacerations were sutured in the training room. Justin did not compete in the Grudge Match and is questionable for Saturday.

FANtasy Bull Riding Game Results - Tulsa OK -- Kris, Mon, Jul 21 2008, 17:06:31 [2]

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!!!!! I actually got the scores up well before the next event this time! LOL! Also, we’ve got some leader board changes this week. Littlemaster and Joyce are now sharing the top spot. My team, well it just keeps slipping and slipping.

How about that Justin McBride? If anyone had any doubts about his passion for bull riding after coming back from shoulder surgery, well he sure put those doubts to rest this weekend. Congratulations Champ! I cannot wait to see Mike White’s 95.75 ride on Troubadour. That’s sure going to be an exciting ride. The PBR will air this event on Versus on August 2nd at 7:00 PM EST.

Although this is a little late, we’d also like to congratulate Guilherme and his wife Patricia on the birth of their son. Joao Gabriel Marchi was born on July 8th. I just bet he’s a doll just like his big sis, Manuela.

Bull rider Tyler Pankewitz in hospital after being thrown off, stomped on by bull
THE CANADIAN PRESS

CALGARY — The excitement of rodeo’s marquee event turned to fear in the blink of an eye on Monday when Tyler Pankewitz was bucked off his seat atop Tangle Flags and stomped on by the 1,500-lb. bull.
Pankewitz, the last rider of the day, was carried off the muddy infield on a stretcher and transported to Foothills hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition.
A few hours after the wreck, one of his bull-riding buddies reported Pankewitz was conscious but “his chickens are scattered.”
He was slated to undergo a CAT scan Monday night.
“He was making a heck of a bull ride and, just like Tyler, he wasn’t letting go until his head hit the ground,” said fellow Alberta bull rider Denton Edge, who was watching the action from the chutes when Pankewitz, the 2007 PBR Canadian champion, was injured.
“It just kind of threw him right underneath the bull, and the bull turned around and just stepped on him.
“It’s a scary deal, but he was breathing and moving around a bit so hopefully he’ll be alright.”
Bullfighter Scott Byrne saved Pankewitz from another potentially nasty moment a day earlier when an ornery Border Denial aimed its horns at the grounded bull rider in Sunday’s third go-round.
Byrne didn’t see the impact of Monday’s incident because it happened so quickly, but heard early reports the rider’s jaw may be broken.
“He was breathing fine. His eyes were open. He was kind of talking there. It looked really bad, but it wasn’t that bad. There’s a positive side to it,” Byrne said.
“It could be a heckuva lot worse. What happened today with him — a bull stepping on your head — it could be a lot worse.”
Strathmore’s Scott Schiffner and defending Stampede champ Brian Canter are poised to split top honours in the fourth and final go-round, although the results won’t be official until the horn sounds on Dustin Elliott’s re-ride Tuesday.
Canter, the fourth rider out of the chutes, was awarded an 87.5 aboard Big Stone’s Buffalo Soldier, while Schiffner matched his score on Hazard County, another bull from Bruce Sunstrum’s herd.
Even if Elliott wows the judges and overtakes the leaders, both Schiffner, a two-time Stampede champ, and Canter are guaranteed a spot in Sunday’s finale.
But none of the riders were in the mood to celebrate after Pankewitz was loaded into the back of an ambulance.
Most tried to stick to their routines while they waited for an update on his status.
Schiffner and Canter will be joined Sunday by Matt Bohon, the only rider to cash three cheques in Pool A action.
In other rodeo action, Jeff Willert hung on for an unmatched 89 in Monday’s fourth and final go-round of saddle bronc riding Pool A, pocketing $5,000 in day-money and punching his ticket to the $100,000 showdown on Sunday. He will be joined by JJ Elshere, Anthony Bello and Isaac Diaz.

***Here's hoping that Tyler is doing well.

Shane Drury Scholarship -- `Beckie, Fri, Jun 13 2008, 7:13:16 [1]

Shane Drury Scholarship Continues Legacy

In 2005, the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Foundation awarded the first Shane Drury Scholarship.

The scholarship will continue in 2006, but sadly this time it will be presented without Drury to shake the winner¡¦s hand. In October of 2006, just months after traveling to Casper, Wyo., to present the first award, Ewing¡¦s Sarcoma took his life.

Drury was a two-time College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) qualifier who graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, with a Bachelor¡¦s Degree in marketing. He also had a successful career in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in 2000.

After his first bout with cancer, Drury came back to the arena as a competitor and was making another bid for the Wrangler NFR when he received the news that the cancer was back. Drury fought the disease valiantly and with determination from the first time it was diagnosed in May of 2002. He did return to the arena to judge the sport that he loved, for the PRCA, NIRA and Professional Bull Riders.

Through it all, he encouraged everyone around him to keep smiling, never give up and most of all to remember where their strength came from. His favorite bible verse was Philippians 4:13, ¡§I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

¡¨
The second $2,500 scholarship was presented to Texie Rose, a junior at Weber State University. Rose qualified for the 2007 CNFR in goat tying and competed there just weeks after having her second surgery for ovarian cancer. She is currently cancer free and completing her education in elementary education.

Drury¡¦s story, love of rodeo and attitude led to the creation of the scholarship. Fundraising efforts are ongoing and the committee hopes to raise enough money to continue Drury¡¦s legacy indefinitely.

¡§It was a sad day for all of us when we lost Shane,¡¨ said John Smith, commissioner of the NIRA. ¡§He was such a fighter and an inspiration. While we are all going to miss him, I¡¦m grateful to the committee for starting this scholarship and we will keep his memory alive.

¡¨
Donations to the scholarship fund are fully tax deductible and can be made to the NIRA Foundation in Shane Drury¡¦s name. They should be sent to: National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Foundation, 2316 Eastgate North Suite 160, Walla Walla WA 99362.

The Shane Drury Scholarship committee includes:
ƒæ Ann Bleiker, Colorado Springs. Bleiker currently represents the Lopez family, where three siblings have qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics. She coordinates public relations for the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour and World¡¦s Toughest Cowboy.

ľ Travis Burian, Bozeman, Mont. Burian is a former NIRA student president and Walt Garrison Award winner who qualified for the CNFR in bull riding.

ľ Cindy Schonholtz, Colorado Springs. Schonholtz is administrator of the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund and director of the American Horse Youth Council.

ƒæ Jesse Drury, Chad Drury, and Paul Drury. Jesse and Chad are Shane¡¦s older brothers and Paul is their father.

ľ Brent Gibson, Ogden, Utah. Brent is a National Director for Dodge Rodeo and has been involved with their program for many years. In 2005, he lost his wife Tana in a fight with breast cancer.

ľ David Glodt, Houston, Texas. David is a television producer and has and produces the CNFR. He is also a partner in ProRodeo Films..

ƒæ Ty Murray, Stephenville, Texas. Known as ¡§King of the Cowboys,¡¨ Murray earned a record seven world champion all-around title in the PRCA. He is a former NIRA all-around champion and has been a star of the Professional Bull Riders. He now serves as that association¡¦s president.

ľ Stran Smith, Childress, Texas. Smith has eight NFR qualifications to his credit, but his biggest accomplishment is returning to the arena after having a stroke. In 2003 a heart defect caused the stroke. That May, he had surgery to correct the defect and returned to competition in July.

ƒæ Karl Stressman, Greensboro, N.C. Stressman is director of event marketing for Wrangler Jeans and Shirts. His love of rodeo runs nearly as deep as his love of his family and if he¡¦s not working or with his family, he is team roping. Karl¡¦s wife Val is a breast cancer survivor and the Victory for Val Roping held over Memorial Day in Fort Worth has raised thousands for breast cancer research.

ƒæ Bob and Kristen Tallman, Weatherford, Texas. Bob has received the PRCA¡¦s Announcer of the year award six times and has announced the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 19 times. He and Kristen have a ranch and raise bucking bulls.

Bad news regarding Paulo from PBR -- Tracy, Wed, Jun 11 2008, 14:42:58 [2]

From: PBR
Date: Jun 10, 2008 8:08 PM
Subject: PBR fan favorite Paulo Crimber suffers a potentially career-
Body: PUEBLO, Colo. (June 10, 2008) - Veteran bull rider Paulo Crimber suffered a potentially career-ending injury on Friday, June 6, in Orlando, Fla., the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) announced today.

Crimber (Olimpia, SP, Brazil), who had recently returned to competition after suffering a broken vertebra on Feb. 23 in St. Louis, was thrown from his bull in the first round of the Git-R-Done Invitational. The 10-year veteran landed on his right shoulder, and the bull subsequently fell on top of him. X-rays reviewed on Monday, June 9, determined Crimber re-broke the C1 vertebra in his neck. Crimber also broke his right collarbone (riding hand) and sustained several other injuries during the wreck.

The X-rays taken on Monday showed that Crimber displaced the bone and will require surgery, which is scheduled for this Friday in Dallas.

“This is a career-threatening injury, and it will take at least six months before the status of his career is known,” stated Dr. Tandy Freeman, traveling PBR Doctor and Orthopedic Surgeon.

Three-time PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes stated, “It’s heart-breaking to see a dreamer have to face reality, and that reality is that he might not be able to ride again or achieve his life-long dream of becoming a World Champion.”

Former PBR President and nine-time World Champion Cowboy Ty Murray said, “I wouldn’t rule out anything at this point. It depends on a person’s will, want and determination. We’ve seen athletes come back in every sport when a doctor has said their careers were over. It just depends on where Paulo is at in his life and what he wants.”

Crimber, known for his celebratory dances after successful rides, has been a popular fixture on the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler from 1998 to 2008. The Brazilian native has had an impressive career which boasts career earnings of $1,119,781, nineteen 90-point rides, and two BFTS event wins.

“I feel terrible for Paulo and his family. It’s a very sad day for him, his family and the sport of professional bull riding,” stated Randy Bernard, PBR CEO. “Paulo has been a great athlete and role model on the PBR tour and my prayers are out to him for a speedy recovery.”

The PBR will post more information when it becomes available; however, the next injury update is not expected until next week.

Congratulations to Sean (Charlie Ham) Willingham on his first win on the BFTS in 2008. I don’t know about the rest of you but I sure hated to see Paulo get hurt like he did after being out for so long. When I spoke with him a few weeks ago he was so excited and so anxious to get back to riding. Looks like it will be the first of August before he gets to start riding again. If you have any well wishes you'd like to pass on to Paulo you can leave them here or you can email them to me at pbrchickkristine@woh.rr.com and I will make sure he gets them.

PBR News From Here and There and Over Yonder.... -- Kris, Tue, Jun 10 2008, 17:15:35 [1]

News from Rob Smett's website:
Hey Everybody,

Well I hope everyone is doing well. The past week and a half has been awful hectic. I was in San Angelo last Saturday through Wednesday shooting the television show “America’s Toughest Jobs.” Working as my assistants were Frank Newsom, Shorty, Joe and Miles Hare. We had a blast all getting together and working on this show for NBC. It will be airing this fall. I will make sure to let everyone know when it is on.

I left Friday morning to go to the PBR event in Shawnee, OK. The event was won by Dustin Hall in the bull riding--Brian Flanders and Johnathan Osteen won the Daisy Protection Bull Fight contest. It was a little warm up in Shawnee but it sure was a good event that L.L. Productions put on.

I am off this weekend and then I go to California to work the Livermore rodeo. I am sure looking forward to Livermore as it was the first junior rodeo I ever competed in so it will be like old home week for me.

Happy trails and God Bless,
Rob Smetts

News from santa.mariatimes.com:

Elks Rodeo kicks off with PBR bullriding action
By Elliott Stern / Sports Editor

There was an old fashioned cowboy showdown Thursday night at the Elks Unocal Events Center in Santa Maria.

It was much like the old days when cowboys got together to ride the toughest animals to see who came out on top.

The Santa Maria Elks kicked off their 65th annual Rodeo and Parade weekend with 40 of the toughest young cowboys going up against the baddest of the bad - big, bad Brahma bulls.

For the first time, the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) came to town for a night of non-stop bull riding action.

That was it - bulls, bulls, bulls.

And 40 cowboys all determined to walk away with the Santa Maria Elks PBR championship title.

For the record, the first-ever Santa Maria PBR champion is Cody Campbell, a 20-year old cowboy from Summerville, Oregon.

“It feels good to be the first PBR champion at this rodeo,” said Campbell. “I drew a couple of really good bulls, got a couple really good rides and everything worked out for me.”

The PBR is split into four levels - four different championship series.

At the top is the Built Ford Tough Tour with the top 45 riders in all of the PBR . The second level is the Challenger Tour, followed in order by the Enterprise Tour and the Discovery Tour.

Every five events, the cowboys are re-seeded with the top five from a lower level moving up and the bottom five from a higher level moving down.

The Elks PBR event is a Challenger level event.

“My win here should move me up into the Ford Tough Tour,” said Campbell. “I think I'll be 10th when the next re-seeding is done - at the worst 11th, which would make me an alternate on the Ford Tough Tour. This win can help get me a shot at the world championship.”

The competition had two go-rounds.

All 40 riders competed in the ‘long go'.

The top 10 came back for a final showdown in the ‘short go'.

The winner was the rider with the most total points from both go-rounds.

Campbell and Cory Melton were tied for first after the ‘long go' with 87.5 point rides.

Agnaldo Cardoza and Ross Johnson were right behind, tied for third with 85.5 point rides.

The rest of the first round's top 10 included Tony Mendes (85.0 points), Bryan Richardson and Beau Hill (84.0), Mike Lee and Harve Stewart (82.5) and Rob Bell (80.0).

Richardson and Bell pulled out of the short-go with injuries moving Bronson Butcher (79.) and Chad Denton (77.0) into the finals field.

The cowboys got to pick their bulls for the short-go, picking in order, top to bottom.

“We try to pick our best bulls for the PBR,” said Cindy Moreno, the Ranch Manager for rough stock provider The Flying U Rodeo Ranch. “We really look for 10 of the toughest for the short-go.”

And tough they were - just four of the finalists managed to post the required eight-second ride.

Campbell hit a 91-pointer for a two-go total of 178.5 - nailing down the champion's belt buckle.

Hill added an 88.5-point ride in the short-go to claim second place (172.5 total) with Denton moving all the way up from 12th to fourth (84.5 second-go and a 161.5 total) and Stewart finishing fourth (73.0 second-go and 155.5 total).

“Tonight's show went really well,” said Cotton Rosser, the owner of the Flying U rodeo Ranch. “The people saw a hell of a good bull riding show - there was a 91-point ride in the finals. The Elks should be complimented for putting on such a fine show.”

After a successful debut, the Elks plan to bring the PBR next year and we'll into the future.

“We're hoping the PBR really takes off,” said Dean Chabot, the chairman of the Elks Rodeo Flag Committee. “It's really all about the kids. If this does well, we'll raise more money for the Elks Recreation Foundation and that money all goes to help local kids and children's organizations.”

“This is a really great rodeo,” said Campbell. “I'll definitely be back next year.”

Hi guys. Sorry I wasn't able to post over the weekend, my home computer is hosed for now. Kody Lostroh won the CT event in Lexington over the weekend, Adriano took 2nd. If memory serves me, Michael Ruehman took 3rd place. It was a good event, although there were a lot of buck-offs. I think in two days there were only a total of like 18 qualified rides. Rupp Arena would be a perfect place though for a BFTS event...the host hotel is connected to the arena. J.B. Mauney was there but not riding, I believe he was just there to help Dillon Page with this bulls and to help pull ropes for some of this buddies. There were no injuries, at least not on Saturday night.

A special thanks goes out ot Steven Shelley for getting ticket for me, Robyn and her neice Kalei.

Back from the Windy City....... -- Kris, Mon, Apr 28 2008, 19:06:36 [4]

Well we made it back from Chicago all in one piece. I kept hearing horror stories about the traffic and thankfully we didn’t have any problems with any. And we were no where near the riots. We had a wonderful time, it was so nice to see everyone there. We got to have breakfast yesterday with Adriano and Valdiron and that is always a treat. Adriano constantly cracks me up. From the way he talked, although he’s retiring he is still planning on being at nearly every PBR event in one capacity or another. Let me tell you, I was thrilled to learn that information. I know you guys probably get tired of hearing me talk about Adriano but well too bad. LOL! When he gave Robyn and I our tickets he said here is an extra set for two people I need you to make sure they get them. It turns out that the tickets were for a father and son. The mom passed away in February and she was an avid PBR fan and Adriano wanted to do this for her family. Isn’t that sweet? The father didn’t get to come because he was away on business but we got to meet Jase and his friend Jake on Saturday night and then Seth came with Jase on Sunday. They were all very nice young men and so happy to be at the bull riding and just tickled that they got their tickets from Adriano. Guilherme brought his 3 year old daughter Manuela with him, she is a doll baby. Manuela as with Robyn and I and we played through most of the bull riding Saturday night except for when her daddy was riding. She had to stand up on my lap and watch him. Sunday she was a little worn, she fell asleep after the 2nd or 3rd ride and didn’t wake up until the middle of the short go. She is a very good little girl and so smart! Guilherme and his wife Patricia have done a wonderful job with her. Ok, so back to Adriano…it was so wonderful to be there to see him win (well split 1st & 2nd)! I think that was just what he needed. Congratulations to him and to Dustin Hall. Sure hated to see Chris Shivers get beat up like he did….broken cheek bone and eye socket. That will probably keep him out for awhile unfortunately. J.B. left the building on crutches but I never did hear the extent of his injuries. And what did you guys all think about Zack Brown’s hang-up? That could have turned out so much worse. Those bull fighters as just AWESOME. I just can’t give them enough props for the job they do every weekend to protect the bull riders. According the boys Paulo is a bit bummed out about not being back to riding yet so if any of you want to send a get well/thinking of your card to Paulo let me know and I’ll get you my mailing address and then I’ll mail them all at once to him. I’m guessing you are all tired of my ramblings so I’ll stop here. Well I won’t completely stop; I need to post your scores too. Have a great day everyone!
Kris

Hey Kris,
My score is inncorrect. After Billings I had 7875 and according to Chicago results I got 350 point but my score after Chicago still says 7875.....you must have partied too hard in Chicago...LOL. I too had lots of fun in Chi-town (and very little sleep). I got to meet a few of the new young guns (Jimmy and Pistol) as well as my favorite Justin...man he is really funny.

OOPPPSSSS! Looks like the formula on my spread sheet for your totals line didn't work right. Your total should be 8225. Sorry about that girl. And I went and checked everyone else's scores and they were fine. Again, sorry about that, I'm a dork sometimes.

I thought that was you in Chicago but wasn't 100% sure so I didn't say anything. I hope you don't think I was trying to be a snot. I didn't get a whole lot of sleep either but did have a great time. Wasn't that a really nice hotel?

Hey Kris,
No problem on the scoring boo-boo. I just chalk it up to lack of sleep from Chicago...LOL. Yes I was in Chicago and I thought the same thing...is that Kris or not? Well I am going to Nashville so if I see you there (or any other event)I will definately say hi. I had a blast as usual and too got very little sleep.

Kris/Beckie,since you gals seem to be "in the know" about Adriano,do you have any idea if there will be a retirement party for him at the Finals? His retirement is one of the reasons my husband and I are returning to the Finals this year. Thanks!

Hi Pam. I talked to Adriano over the weekend and he didn't know yet what was going on with the finals and a retirement party. I, along with many other fans and friends of Adriano, am working on a special scrapbook for him. If you would like to make a scrapbook page or two or just include a special message to him let me know and I'd be more than happy to add it to this book(s). I do have it on good authority though that Adriano will still be at just about every PBR BFTS event in the coming years working in some capacity or another for the PBR. Great news huh? I will be sure to let you know if I hear of anything in regards to a retirement party for Adriano at the finals.
