Two reasons:

  • 1. Mac's father mentions that they were warned about the girls going to Ireland. (Have you wondered why Mac's mom is so out of it since she left? She is so racked with guilt that she went from a happy vacationer to being heavily medicated. Something is definitely wrong,)
  • I think it is no accident that they were brought up in a provincial Georgia town that was so obscure that it was never visited by the Fae. This point is emphasied many times in the text, and I think that is one clue that they were being sheltered. Which really makes you believe that Rainey Lane must be feeling major guilt about allowing Alina to go.

  • What I want to know is ... what did Alina learn about all of that before she was killed? She was there for 8 months, and then she tells Mac that there was so much she should have told her... So I'm thinking that Alina learned a hell of a lot about their birth & circumstances, and that it is all in her journal.
