Because he is completely and utterly unable to sense certain objects, instead of being a Null he's a Void and they have no effect on him. He's 'stupid' and can't see them and they can't 'see' him either. (Idea comes from an anime known as Moon Phase, the main character can't sense anything spiritual and so spiritual attacks can't do anything to harm him, he doesn't even realize that the main chic is a vampire and her bite does absolutely nothing to him!) Gwen- I think JB definitely saw the Shades- remember when Mac runs back to JB"s place, and is standing at the door, and she speaks aloud Sinsar Dubh, and he appears from a location closer to her than she expects- well if you re-read that section carefully, Mac sees darker, moving spots (Shades) as she continues to look out into the darkness. The passage says that JB is watching her watch "something". So while it is not express that he saw the Shades,it can certainly be reasonably inferred -the facts that he knew she saw something is telling, as well as the fact that he was obscured by the dark prior to revealing himself to her, and certainly would have been fodder for the Shades but for . . . something. The Shades didn't devour JB for a reason. Is he part Shade? I can't wait to find out- and August is sooooo far away!
