It is now thought the captain of the Kormarant lied about the incident with the Sydney. The Kormarant was a mine laying raider then flying the Dutch flag and disguised as a merchantman. There followed a short battle where the Kormarant hit the Sydney with a broadside of torpedos and 150mm cannon fire. Because they were not considered significant enough by the British inteligence at the time only six of the nine pages written by the captain of the Kormarant. The remainder only translated in 2003. Included in the script was until recently dicovered a hidden cryptic code detailing much of the events.Had some of this been uncovered years ago the Sydney may have been found sooner.
