Hello

My name is Samantha Fenwick I'm trying to find pictures of ships my Dad used to sail on when he was a teenager. Graham Fenwick, now 64, set out to sea at the young age of 16. He was posted on The Sandsend, The Runswick, The Sneaton and The Kildare. I'm desperate to find some pictures of these ships so I can frame them in time for Christmas. Any advice anyone can give me would be gratefully received. I would, of course, be willing to pay for the photos.

I'm best contacted on my mobile 07931 978634 or on email samantha@fenwick6.orangehome.co.uk

Very best wishes and Merry Christmas, Samantha Fenwick

Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who helped me track down pictures of the ships my Dad used to be on when he was a teenager. I'm going to give them to him for Christmas - I'm sure it'll be the best present he's ever received. Many thanks to Tony Robinson, Jim Smith, Ian Hoots, Billy McGee and Brian for his rather slendid website.

Have a very Merry Christmas xxxxxx :))

All the very best to Brian for his wonderful site, and the chaps who have answered any Questions regarding Ships and next of kin enquiries, Please spare a thought on xmass day for the forty one crew members on the Steve Irwin the Anti Whale-ing Sea shepherd ship who are presently down in frozen southern waters trying to track down the japanese Whale-ing fleet. If you can picture a Whale being killed by an electric harpoon with a Grenade on the Harpoon, and the agonising sounds from the Whale then you wonder what sort of World we are living in. Captain Paul watson of the Steve Irwin needs every bit of World support he can get. My best wishes to you. Glenn Baker

Merry christmas to you all.
I was reading an article recently about the belfast lough,
it stated the a reasonable sized ship was plying its waters,
Was this ship built on the edge of the lough,or is the some way into it via belfast?.
I have looked at maps, but can not see anything obvious.
Is there an answer somewhere?.

Help needed if possible please.

Anyone in Liverpool who lives near the Liverpool Naval Memorial, situated on the Mersey River Front at the Pier Head, close to and behind the Liver Buildings at the end of James Street.

Another website I help on has asked if it is possible for anyone to take a digital photo of Panel 21, Column 1. covering the person named below.

HARRIS, Fireman and Trimmer, HUBERT ARTHUR, 171331, H.M. Yacht Sappho, Naval Auxiliary Personnel (Merchant Navy). 29 September 1940. Age 19. Panel 21, Column 1.

I would appreciate it very much if someone from this forum could possibly do this for me and send to me via email so I can forward on.

Thanks

At the outbreak of the Second World War, it was evident that the Royal Navy would not be able to man all the auxiliary vessels that would serve with it. To deal with the shortfall in manpower, a number of officers and men of the Merchant Navy agreed to serve with the Royal Navy under the terms of a T.124 agreement, which made them subject to Naval discipline while generally retaining their Merchant Navy rates of pay and other conditions. The manning port established to administer these men was at Liverpool. More than 13,000 seamen served under these conditions in various types of auxiliary vessels, at first mainly in armed merchant cruisers, but also in armed boarding vessels, cable ships, rescue tugs, and others on special service. The Liverpool Naval Memorial commemorates 1,400 of these officers and men, who died on active service aboard more than 120 ships, and who have no grave but the sea.

Just to raise a subject, Can someone explain, "Deadweight"
"Gross weight," "Displacement" and "tonnage?" And while I'm at it. Why did ships still have two tall masts long after the days of sail? And if the Union flag is only the Union Jack when flying from the Jack staff. Why didn't they just call the Jack staff a flag pole, and save the confusion? Gotta go! The White coats are comming! Cheers, Albi.

This may seem strange and am certain of recieving many words of wisdom, but was asked recently from an educated maritime source, that although he could understand that the Nerchant Navy was born from ever a time that merchant trade commenced and the Royal Navy from basically piracy, how and when did pleasure craft fly the red ensign. In reply I told that such craft could not fly a naval flag, Uncertain as to the Union Jack, but countries flags seem also not to appear. Would love advice. When the many Vessels of the D DAY Rescues, bravely entered the fr4ay, were they not also undert the ensign and each vessel dgedeserve a MN Vetrans Badge / Award. If I knew, I would have no need to ask more. HELP WANTED. Thanx in advance Keith.

Somewhere, there was a short cut on leaving the Gulf into the Indian, Ocean which cut off the corner missing Cape Ras Al Had, BP tankers were not allowed to use it after one of their ships ran aground there, and a local chief tried to claim it. I'm almost sure I once went that way on a Shell tanker, but can't see on a map, or Google, where it exactly was. Any Light for my darkness? Cheers Albi.

Hi all, just wanted to say a big thankyou for all info received re the Merchant Navy and the war.
Thanks to some help from a very dear friend of mine, I now have everything stored in a special folder on my computer, easily accessible for later reference when I write my story for the local paper.
Also a big thanks to Brian because without him this site would not be here and I would not have been able to do any of it.
Linda
