Why , when a ship ups anchor, do we say "Anchors Aweigh?" Thats daft. The anchors arn't away anywhere. They are being brought aboard. Cheers, from a sun drenched NE. Albi.

I was at Gravesend from Late 1977 and left in January after my ten week training.
My first ship was the RippinhamGrange on the meat run to New Zealand, America, Canada back down to New Zealand and vice versa nine months and three days at sea. The other ships I have sailed on are the British Talent, The Hycania, the Sincerity (Everards) and the Sinaloa from Falmouth Cornwall.
If anyone remembers Owen Hart he was my sparring partner at Gravesend.

Feel free to contact me
all the best

for all,
after seeing peters flag,i was wondering what the concensus would be if we were to have a similar flag here in britain.
peter is going to donate his flag to the queensland maritime museum,we could donate a similar flag to a museum in this country.
i do not want to ride on peters band wagon, but i am willing to be the holder of the flag and add all the names to it like peters.
please inform me what you think.
mike

Hi Everyone, thought some might like to see this tribute to the Lusitania on the Youtube site. I found it on the genealogy forum I use. I've been helping someone with their family tree who lost his gt grandfather & gt uncle on the Lusitania (Father & son Michael Cooney snr & jnr). I was disappointed at the lack of interest in the memorial service for the Lusitania in Liverpool on the 7th May at the Maritime Museum. It was quite telling that a few feet away from where a wreath was placed into the water for the ceremony that a dozen wreaths were placed at the foot of Billy Fury's statue to remember his birthday. Something not quite right there though I'm sure Billy's family appreciated it. Anyway, the Youtube clip is worth having a peek. Take care everyone. Tracey.

Hi All.
The former RFA Sir Lancelot of Falklands fame is on her way to her last resting place, the breakers in Bangladesh.
Sold to South African owners she was renamed the Lowland Lancer then sold to Singapore as the Perceverance. Ending her days as Glenn Braveheart.
Cheers Des

I see that Brian is now finding it too costly to keep the new forum going.I dont know if anyone else would agree but I would be quite willing to pay either a one off or yearly subscription of say £10 to assist in the cost of this site.Has any one else got any thoughts on this?

Somehow this keeps ending up in the Engine Room Forum

I am wondering if you can help me or advise me where is should contact.

My grandfather Captain Arthur Frederick Newman went down with his ship the Day Rose in 1942. they were torpedoed by U_Boat 552. I have in the last 4 years lost my parents and on going through their effects have found a few bits my father kept of his dads. One of the items is a led lined No cb415 war instructions for british merchant ships August 1917. Rather than just keeping it in a box until such time when my children will be going thorough my effect and just throwing it out, is there some where where it might be of interest eg a museum. I also have some charts on the S African coast which were printed befor the war began.

Thank you for your time

Regards

Alison Cotter

brian,
here is part of the editorial from the above magazine.
it states that a person visited the internet and was advised to look at a certain forum, this person did not name the forum, where retired seamen can enter and take part in the on site communications, this person states.
the most worrying aspects of what he was reading were the comments about former colleagues.he goes on,its one thing sitting in a pub and exchange reminiscences, possibly critical and even defamatory remarks, about former colleagues.
he states,if he would publish such comments in his magazine,he would need a good lawyer.
some of the comments,he says, could cause distress to friends and relatives of the victim of the comments or even the victim himself/herself.
he goes on to say, that he finds it astonishing that these remarks are allowed carry on in a hurtful and damaging way and most of all being made public.
i do not think it is your site brian but another one,its a shame to know that there is a similar site out there, with the same kind of people causing upsetting problems for everyone else.
chris

I am trying to find out about my Grandfather who died in WW2. I found his memorial details and know his name is registered in the Tower Hill Memorial in London but can find no further details of him.

His name was Percy Bird and he was in the Merchant Navy and was master of sailing vessel Blue Mermaid (Harwich) and he died 09/07/41 aged 38 years.

I'd be grateful if anyone knows anything about my great uncle, George Alfred Macnaughton Benson born in Glasgow about 1885-1890 who served in the Merchant Navy in WW1 and also for a number of years afterwards as we have some photos of him in exotic places. He survived being torpedoed twice and taught himeself Spanish while on watch on long transatlantic voyages.

I am trying to obtain a photograph (reasonably high resolution digital file) showing the British Bombardier, on which a friend of mine served in the 1960s. I want to make a print for framing - no commercial use at all.

If anyone has a picture that they could let me have, I would be most grateful. Thanks a lot.
