My dad was one of only a few survivors on the Athelsultan when it was sunk Sept 1942. His brother Joe Jenkins went down with the ship after a wave tossed their life boat as it was being lowered. My Dad Ronald Jenkins had been told that he was the only survivor, but I am now learning that there was 9 or 10 in total. It would be great to find others out their. My Dad was picked up by the Weyburn and again was not aware of any others who were also picked up by this ship.

Looking for information on S.S. Marconi (Liverpool). My Great Uncle Arthur Wilton serviced on this ship but unfortunately my unclc was killed on 21 May 1941. I wondered if anyone can help me find information regarding the ship he served on and how I can find informatin on his service with the Merchant Navy.

To everyone,
Yesterday I spoke to Brian on the phone, and he was telling me of the complaints he had recieved.
Two seperate schools use this site,to research our life in the merchant navy. They were appalled by the language used on the site that they felt they had to make a complaint.
OK this is Brians site, but the general public do view it from time to time.
Brian has asked us in the past to curb our language, but to no avail,it just seems that the minority want to spoil it for the rest of us. This is why some of the new changes are taking place.
Please don't shoot the messenger,
Mike

Why , when a ship ups anchor, do we say "Anchors Aweigh?" Thats daft. The anchors arn't away anywhere. They are being brought aboard. Cheers, from a sun drenched NE. Albi.

I was at Gravesend from Late 1977 and left in January after my ten week training.
My first ship was the RippinhamGrange on the meat run to New Zealand, America, Canada back down to New Zealand and vice versa nine months and three days at sea. The other ships I have sailed on are the British Talent, The Hycania, the Sincerity (Everards) and the Sinaloa from Falmouth Cornwall.
If anyone remembers Owen Hart he was my sparring partner at Gravesend.

Feel free to contact me
all the best

John Wicks
