Chief catering officer, Richard Reeves FHCI. chef de cuisine D VDaysh. the 3 voyage movies were On the beat . Date Posted: 2/09/12 6:35pm ADC 527 was overcome by the bad weather and was lost when she foundered South of Burrow Head, in about 23 fathoms. She was discovered some 70 years later. There are no signs of an explosion. I've written a short article on my website petenicholl.me.uk/page52.html ADC1272 was not lost, in June 1946 she is shown on the Port Ryan bunkering return as having taken on 10cwt of coal during June. Date Posted: 2/09/07 9:19am SS Frances Massey was torpedoed and sunk by U.48 on 7th June 1940 in the Atlantic 14 miles NW of Tory Island in position 55.33N 08.26W while sailing independently on a voyage from Wanaba, Consception Bay, N.F. to Glasgow with a cargo of 7500 tons of iron ore. The sole survivor was the Master, Capt W. Whitehead who was rescued by HMS VOLUNTEER. 33 crew and one gunner were lost and the ship sank in 30 seconds. Nine (9) men from Port Talbot were lost on the ship, ranging from a 15 year old cabin boy to a 40+ veteran of the Great war who had received the Military Medal with the RAF in 1918. This was the greatest loss on a single day for the district in either war. Robert McDermott (from Port Talbot) was one of those who died on the |Frances Massey. His brother James McDermott also a Merchant Navy Seaman died in WWII drown at sea. Brother-in-laws Thomas Burke also of the Merchant Navy Died in WWII drown at sea and William Burke of the Royal Navy survived being torpedoed during WWII. George Duca aged 43 a Maltese citizen also died on the Frances Massey Harold Dickens, marine PO/17047 (PresidentIII,O/P) also died on the Frances Massey. Do you know the names of others or have any photographs of crew or the ship (Frances Massey)? I am related to Robert McDermott (Great Uncle) and would like to know more about the crew/ship. Date Posted: 27/02/08 3:09am Any information etc sought on the SS. Lieutenant Robert Moray. A Merchant ship attacked by three enemy aircraft, armed with aerial torpedoes, on a coastal convoy. The SS. Lieutenant Robert Moray was a 3,176 ton steamship. “The planes attacked in turn two attacking around while the remaining one made his swoop. The ship was struck in the stokehold at 7.45”. This was in December 1942, The ship was taken in tow and after 36 hours reached port. This is the only information found so far, we would appreciate any assistance. Thank you in advance. Date Posted: 18/02/08 9:28pm Hi everyone When i was on the Cape Leeuwin(SSM)two of were logged in Freemantle for being adrift after doing a 16 hour stint.I never thought anymore about it until i paid off her six months later,and my leave was over.I phoned up the pool for another job it was then they said i had to go in front of a committee and to get a union man to go with me,waste of time he never opened his mouth the whole time i was in there.The end result was no pool money till i completed another voyage.I shipped out the following day from the same pool(Glasgow).The question is did these committees replace DR's or was there somthing else behind them. He is Remembered with Honour at BARRY (MERTHYR DYFAN) BURIAL GROUND. He is both recorded and remembered by the CWGC, but the ship remains elusive and many have tried. I have provided two other Message Boards for postings that are of the more 'conversational' type. I am truly fed up with recieving complaints that the Merchant Navy Message Board is loaded with postings that should be on the other Message Boards. It is much against my nature to check postings all the time but it seems I am going to have to. In future I will ask incorrectly placed postings to be reposted and, after 24 hours, will remove them. And there is a graph on Britian falling from owning half the merchant ships in the world to a quarter in 37 years. In 1901 percentage wise they had [50.2] in 1914 [41.6] in 1938 [26.4]in the same period the USA went from 4.2 to 13.4 the equivelant of 6,909,507 tons So we were on the downslide as far as ships went from the time we went to sea, it obviously increased at a faster rate with the advent of containers. Date Posted: 12/02/08 5:16am Reading a piece the other day about a ship that had two refits. At the end of each the registered tonnage of the ship changed, it was reduced. Back in the days we sailed I was taught that tonnage was measured by the displacem,ent of water. Modern ships I am infoormed go by cubic meterage, one metre to the ton.
