After several years and several ships I started working ashore,I retired in 2005 after 27 years as a M.O.D.fire fighter. I often wonder what became of the rest of the class. If anyone is interested please send me a `E`mail. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 2/04/08 6:48pm My greatuncle Henry Gumbleton drowned at Dundee in 1951 having just completed a tour of duty on what he called the "Charles M". We have a letter which he had sent to the family that very day.I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction to find information on him. Has anyone heard of the Charles M or know anything about it? where can I get his service record? His brother Danny Gumbleton was also in the Merchant Navy for many years. Many thanks for any advice. Date Posted: 10/03/08 6:36am Had lunch with a good friend Sunday, he loves sailing, and he asked me the following question. 'Has a documentary about the ultimate sacrifice of merchant seamen and the loss of shipping during the two world wars ever been made. A doco that has possibly interviews from survivors along with any film footage or photos of any sort'? I was unable to answer in a positive manner. Is there such a doco anywhere and if so how can I get one? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

| Subject: MERCHANT NAVY DAY | |
Author: John Strange (no recognition) [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 18/03/08 6:09am As some of you may know we had a feral election here in Oz last year which resulted in a change of government. Before leaving office the outgoing P.M. J. Howard was giving consideration to allowing Merchant Navy day to be celebrated here. The then opposition leader also concured with this. N.Zealand have been considering it for 4 years I am informed. A friend of mine works for the electoral commision and gained for me a copy of government business for the year, no mention of M.N. day. I wrote to my local member in January sending as much information as I could regarding casualties etc. from both wars reminding her of the promise made by the now P.M. Recieveing no reply after one month I then sent a copy to the office of the P.M. Again no reply. Today I sent a copy of the corespondence to a local talk back radio station. The presenter I sent it to has a half hour segment on air with the P.M. every Friday. I hope that with the sympathy of the finding of the 'Sydney' still current the P.M. may be forced to nail his colors to the mast on this one. I may be clutching at straws but if you never try you never find out. John in oz [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 13/03/08 3:11am A couple of years ago when I was a young lad I spent many summer holidays in the Sunderland area and recall going to Whitby for the day. It was there I was told the story of Grace Darling and the lifeboats. Are they still operating today, of have they been replaced with something else? From what I remember of them they did a fantastic job. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Author: KEITH GREENWAY (Grandfather’s life a mystery) [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 29/02/08 7:20pm We are stuck and ask for all assistance with another enquiry as follows: I am researching my family history and trying to find out information about my grandfather, who died many years before I was born. He was William Evan Cound/t Mably, born 1873 in Canton, Cardiff, who died in 1930 in Cowbridge Road. At the time of his death he was working at Evans Street, Barry Dock. He is remembered vaguely as being in the Merchant Navy. I know of his parents and siblings but nothing of him. My late father rarely mentioned him. My many years of research have proved fruitless. I would be grateful for any information that throws light on his life etc. DR Evans Plympton, Plymouth I would love to assist this gent, but again as an amateur amongst the knowledgable, again request your assistance. Possibly in this event anyone with the know how of the National Archives etc, can point us in the right direction. Until: I WIN THE LOTTERY OR CAN AFFORD TO RETIRE, I cannot see me being able to become a pro at this, but strive to help. Would love all / any input and can only offer respect and thanks in return. Plus, I am certain the thanks of all concerned. Regards, Keith. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

| Subject: LEST WE FORGET | |
Author: Keith Greebway (SAD) [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 11/03/08 1:12am If the CWGC does not record the accidental deaths of Merchant Seamen and yet members of HM forces can be recorded if death occurred from lets say the flu, where is the justice in that. Surely most that perished during 1914 - 1918 and 1939 - 1945 Should be recorded and remembered, without question. Do you know of anywhere that I CAN ADD NAMES OF MERCHANT SEAMEN, to another Roll of Honour, that will commemorate those that were involved but perished on the wrong day, in the wrong port, or of the wrong reason to satisfy Government stats etc. On another day, if the enemy were involved etc, the names maybe included on a plaque engraved at Tower Hil. Die yestertday in dock and you will be forgot - No matter what. SAD and Wrong in my mind. Tower Hill, may not be large enough, if all were remembered. Keith. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 9/03/08 11:14am One for the Ginger beers. To avoid a collision in the channel, an old T2 I was on, went from full ahead to full astern in one go, Nearly shook itself to death. Later the old chief, reckoned that just stopping the prop would create enough drag to stop the ship faster. Often wonder if he was right?? Cheers, from a sunny and not windy N.E Albi.
