Date Posted: 21/10/13 5:07am My father Arthur Ernest Bailey was not only the son of Mr and Mrs W.G.Bailey but was also the wife of my mother Ella Bailey, nee Woodward. His service medals were sent to his mother and I had to apply for them when I discovered that they had not been sent to his wife and as his eldest son I was able to make a claim some 40 years later. | Subject: Stonehaven Radio Station GND | |
Author: Vernon Clark (Help Required) [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 9/02/08 9:43am I am an ex R/O who is on the committe trying to save Stonehaven Radio Station (GND) for the local community and also use part of the building as a museum to the Maritime Radio Service and the Merchant Navy. Details can be seen on website www.stonehavenradiostation.co.uk. Should the project succeed I have been offered on loan for the museum the Marconi equipment removed by the donor from the Ben Macdhui (III). The only item missing is the Atlanta receiver. I am trying to get a photo of the actual radio room if such a photo is in existence and also the call sign of the Ben MacDhui. I have tried most of the websites including Ben Line etc but no joy. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Regards Vernon Clark R738130 [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 29/01/08 1:02am Been a good trip, most of the time, but time to pay off. The gangways down and I'm off. Before I go. The film link below came out the year I was born from the Joe Brown & The Bruvvers film (What a Crazy World) and I remember watching it as boy and it looks like Middlesbrough Pool when I was on it in the 80's. I don't think they would get away with it now, but it made me smile. http://www.youtube.com:80/watch?v=0k5yOSD0tG8&feature=related [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

| Subject: A.D.C 527 and A.D.C. 1272 | |
Author: Keith (A.D.C 527 and A.D.C. 1272.) [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 26/01/08 10:44pm A.D.C 527 and A.D.C. 1272. We again request any assistance, Tregenna is a tribute web site and although the tribute is centred around Captain Care and his crew of the SS. Tregenna (Cpt. Care was native to my home Town of Barry) We attempt rather than waste our spare web space to help and assist others. We at Tregenna have recently linked to: http://www.barrymerchantseamen.org.uk Our intention is to rather than duplicate work, is to give every assistance to them on completing works on the Barry MN ROLE OF HONOUR. There is much to do still as we strive to find more details and make the list of names more interactive etc and complete all details. You are invited to look in and assist if possible at the above WWW ADDRESS. We have many gaps and ask for every help. Currently we are puzzled trying to find the fate of two ships listed as A.D.C 527 and A.D.C. 1272. The two casualties we have recorded for these (one for each vessel) are listed on CWGC with dates of January 1946. This presumably does not relate to the date of the ship's loss, and in the interests of keeping the records straight as we would rather have a consistent meaning for the dates shown, Ask for any guidance, this would be most welcome. A.D.C 527 and A.D.C. 1272 on our list appear as SS. vessels, ADC APPEARS TO MEAN: Auxilliary Dry Cargo and the number a naval prefix perhaps - But then no mention of RFA OR RNR ETC. We are extremely stuck and as amateurs attempting to do good, look to the professionals again for much assistance. It seems likely that the two men passed on in January 1946, presumed that this was from wounds recieved in the time frame for inclusion in records etc., but have no idea on the vessels or fates of the ships etc. Again any help would be most welcomed. Thankyou in advance. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

| Subject: Union Castle Line. | |
Author: John Aspin (R685343) (Interested.) [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 27/01/08 5:28pm During my daily visit to this wonderful web site I have many times read postings with regards to the Union Castle Line. I never actually sailed with this company as a seafarer but I think it would have been nice to have done so. However I did sail along with my wife & daughter on The "RMS Edinburgh Castle" as passengers way back in 1970. We sailed from Southampton to Cape Town on our way out to Zambia for a three year married status contract in the Copper Mines, after arriving in Cape Town we then drove the two thousand miles to Chingola another great experience. This was a wonderful relaxing twelve days & it made a change just to sit & watch the world go by instead of being stuck down the engine room, I have always been a collector of souveniers & memorabelia, at the end of this particular voyage we were given a small brochure, if that is what you would call it, which I still have in my possesion, I have also scanned it into my project about "My Life & Travels" On the front page is very nice picture of the "Edinburgh Castle" Second page an extract from the ships log from the 17th July 1970 to 29th July 1970 (voyage 147) & the Captain was D.W SOWDEN. RD.RNR Third page a Farewell Dinner Menu. Now this is the main reason why I am posting this message, at the bottom of the menu are the following names: A.HARROP (Purser Catering) B. LANDON(Chef de Cuisine)& J. FINDLAY(Baker & Confectioner)in adition on the back page all the passengers that were sat at our table during the voyage have signed it,including the our Steward JOHNNY BURKE. So the question is, have any of you ladies & gentlemen ever sailed with any of the six names I have mentioned. I am looking forward to what response I will receive. Best wishes to all, John Aspin (Ormesby-Middlesbrough) [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 6/01/08 8:49pm Can anyone help RE: The SS. Essex Convoy In 1925 the lady enquires relative Joined this ship at Barry Dock, South Wales. She describes him as Captain Churchill, whom went to sea aged 15. Apparently the ship was involved in a Mutiny of / in South Africa. Not certain if he joined the ship at 15 or went to sea at 15, obviously would not have been Captain at 15. Awaiting more info on sailing and Mutiny. Apparently she has more details - but I wonder further as I know now as much as is written here and she apparently knows little of the outcome etc: Any infop welcomed, on crew etc Thanks in advance from Keith. Date Posted: 28/01/08 6:17pm I am looking for information about my grandfather Henry Albert Bullimore who served in the Merchant Navy from the late 1800's probably until 1910 or thereabouts. Does anyone know if I would be able to obtain records of his service? I only have his name - no details of ships or service number etc which limits my options considerably. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has been able to obtain information with so little to go on. Any suggestions much appreciated, Judith Bullimore [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 27/01/08 12:39am Hello, Does anyone remember my dad, Tony Dwyer, who was a radio officer serving on Brocklebank ships, in and around 1950s? One of his ships was the Maihar (Hope that's right!). My wonderful dad will be 80 years young in a couple of weeks and I would love to be able to read out some messages from his old Merchant Navy friends, from those happy days. He told us many a yarn about life and characters at sea and still keeps us entertained with morse code. Many thanks for taking time to read this message, I will be thrilled to hear from dad's old pals. Regards, Nicola [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 23/01/08 1:49am Hi to ALL. After reading about the Medal Issue,i am wondering if there may be quite a few here that can also apply for the Veterans Badge. It is available to persons who served in HM Forces up to 1994. There is no set period of actual service. There is also a UK Merchant Seafarers Veterans Badge on the site.
