Date Posted: 26/04/08 3:46am In reply to: Mohammed Salikur Rahman 's message, "sea service records" on 22/04/08 12:14am Hi Mohammid As I said before, every port in the UK had an office where the seamen registered when they came off leave,, this was called the pool, [which meant a pool of seamen] The Captain of a ship went there if he wanted any crew, the seamen picked would then go to the shipping office and would sign on the ship for the duration of the voyage to foriegn ports and back again. All the ships were private companies, except the Empire ships which were owned by the British Govt. Your father would have been payed any monies owing every time he paid off a ship at the end of the voyage, he would then go on leave, and then when his leave ended he would report back to the pool office and start again in a new ship.
