As some of you may know we had a feral election here in Oz last year which resulted in a change of government. Before leaving office the outgoing P.M. J. Howard was giving consideration to allowing Merchant Navy day to be celebrated here. The then opposition leader also concured with this. N.Zealand have been considering it for 4 years I am informed.
A friend of mine works for the electoral commision and gained for me a copy of government business for the year, no mention of M.N. day.
I wrote to my local member in January sending as much information as I could regarding casualties etc. from both wars reminding her of the promise made by the now P.M. Recieveing no reply after one month I then sent a copy to the office of the P.M. Again no reply.
Today I sent a copy of the corespondence to a local talk back radio station. The presenter I sent it to has a half hour segment on air with the P.M. every Friday.
I hope that with the sympathy of the finding of the 'Sydney' still current the P.M. may be forced to nail his colors to the mast on this one. I may be clutching at straws but if you never try you never find out. John in oz
