I was today speaking with Doris, 'Doolaly Jim' Brindleys good lady.
She tells me Jim is not well having suffered a number of medical problems of late. She has asked me to pass this information on to all of you who remember Jim on the site.
His prognosis is not too bad and he is at home and very comfortable, only problem just now he has been banned from the fog locker for now which maks him a bit sad.
Doris has promised to keep us updated with Jims situation.
He is still fit enough to visit the site, but only to read.

Hello,
I am both happy :-)) and surprised to discover a picture of S/S Darro. As a happy brat passenger, I made a Buenos Aires - Gibraltar trip aboard Darro in September 1945. Could you send me a .tif, .jpg, .bmp or other photo format of this picture ?
Many thanks and best regards,

I read where the new Argentine President is calling their claim to the Falklands "inalienable" Do you think Gordon Brown has the intestinal fortitude of Margaret Thatcher if push comes to shove? Another question: If the "Queens" are foriegn owned but under British resistry can they still be requisitioned for wartime use?

This morning a story appeared in the Rhum Spectator.
Apparently on Wednesday evening a huge tidal wave was seen in the River Mersey. The cause was recorded as a happening in Chelsea London. I am sure Admiral Hartley will have an explanation for this to have happened. The spectators thinks that the defence barrier was clogged with S**t,and needs a good clearing. Hector McLean AB

My late father sea service records shows that he worked in various ships belong to British Govt.being as British Seaman.
such as: War Castle in 1937
Empire Nightingle 11.6.42-22.11.42
Empire Thackeray 2.343- 14.5.43
Empire Scott 14.1.44-6.5.44
Empire Planet 17.6.44-31.8.44
Fort Tremblant 31.8.45-18.9.46
Does it mean he was working for Royal Navy?
or employed by British Govt.

Yesterday was Anzac day here in Oz and as uaual the marches and parades took place all over the nation. Due to circumstances I was unable to attend the march here in Melbounre but watched the t.v. coverage. This year the M.N. contingent was bigger than in previous years but my biggest surprise was the comments from the comentator. He spoke of the numbers of australian merchant seamen lost during the wars, 1 in 8 of all Australian combatants, and though it is well below that of the U.K. it waS stil significant. Two days prior I recieved a letter from the minister for Veterans Affairs and he informs me that the bill to declare September 3rd as M.N. day here is in its first draught. He has promised to keep me updated on the progress.

My late father's sea service records only given from cardiff office from 1937 to 1950.He seems to me worked in 22 ships in that during the time.
I would like to know their working pattern.why so many ships under so many owners, even some ship belongs to British Govt.
I really did not understand his service records.
Who he was employed with, who was his employee.
What is his service entitlement from the employment.
Please if some one give me details.

Rooting around in a second hand bookshop I acme across a hard back copy printed in 1953 and selling for 18 shillings and 9 pence. Published by Christopher Johnson titled 'Salute The Red Duster' by commander A.B. Campbell. It gives a good insight into the times and lives of merchant seamen during W.W 2. Worth looking for if you can.

In the 1950s I remember seeing part of a vessel at low tide off the coast at Tynemouth, Northumberland.
I believe this was the boiler of the Swedish vessel, Sjovik which came ashore during the Great War.
Does anyone know whether this is correct and, if so, under what circumstances did she sink?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi all again,

I’m researching a ship called the SS George Washington ( also known briefly as SS Catlin) and I have a question. I know that the ship was given to the British under Lend-Lease agreement in 1941 but the MN only used it for one voyage to Newfoundland and then handed it back to the War Shipping Administration on 17 April 1942 as it was totally unsuited to Britain’s needs. Anybody have any idea where I might find information on that single voyage, originating port, crew lists, etc?.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick
