When I was a very young boy with full head of hair and all my teeth I stood by and sailed on the 'Swift' of General Steam Nav.,. The ship underwent repairs at the company's yard which was in Deptford creek which I believe is part of Lewisham. When we sailed from there in Oct/Now 55 we were out in the main stream of the Thames and the Old Man shouts out from bridge let go port anchor. Chippy let go watched by 1st Mate and out went anchor chain cable the lot. It had been secured by a piece of rag in the locker. The Old Man done a good take off of a chimp in a bloody rage jumping around the bridge and threatening mayhem to all. The Chief who's surname was Smith was fairly cool by it but I know the Skipper chased him whenever until I left in Feb of 56. It was a great life mate but we all grow older and balder and find we can't chew on hard tack anymore. keep the dream Mate Mike [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
