This is how it worked when I went to sea in 1980:

14 weeks at Gravesend which included you taking your Lifeboat & Firefighting tickets, Basic Sea Survival & EDH exam. The EDH was in four parts consisting of Rope & Wire work, Derricks and Hatches (Gravesend had full size working derricks including both wooden & macgregor hatches) and GSK (General Ships Knowledge) You had to pass all four parts to gain qualification, though you did not receive your EDH ticket until you had done 12 months sea time and held a lifeboat ticket. Not everyone passed these while at Gravesend and the parts anyone failed had to be retaken in their own time when on leave.

First trip signed on Junior Seaman. Still classed as Deck Boy but book stamped Junior Seamen. After 4 months sea time you were promoted to Seaman II if you had your steering ticket. For this you had to do in excess of 14 hours practice at the wheel and undergo orders from a pilot entering harbour (did mine on the River Maas). If you reached the age of 18 and did not have enough sea time in to be made up to EDH you were upgraded to Senior Ordinary Seamen. Once you had 12 months in promoted to EDH, which was known then as Seaman Grade 1B. Once you had 3 years sea time, promoted to AB which was then known as Seaman Grade 1A.

Then any time after that it was "The working class, can kiss my ass. I've got the Bosun's job at last"
