During my daily visit to this wonderful web site I have many times read postings with regards to the Union Castle Line.
I never actually sailed with this company as a seafarer but I think it would have been nice to have done so.
However I did sail along with my wife & daughter on The "RMS Edinburgh Castle" as passengers way back in 1970.
We sailed from Southampton to Cape Town on our way out to Zambia for a three year married status contract in the Copper Mines, after arriving in Cape Town we then drove the two thousand miles to Chingola another great experience.
This was a wonderful relaxing twelve days & it made a change just to sit & watch the world go by instead of being stuck down the engine room,
I have always been a collector of souveniers & memorabelia, at the end of this particular voyage we were given a small brochure, if that is what you would call it, which I still have in my possesion, I have also scanned it into my project about "My Life & Travels"
On the front page is very nice picture of the "Edinburgh Castle"
Second page an extract from the ships log from the 17th July 1970 to 29th July 1970 (voyage 147) & the Captain was D.W SOWDEN. RD.RNR
Third page a Farewell Dinner Menu.
Now this is the main reason why I am posting this message, at the bottom of the menu are the following names: A.HARROP (Purser Catering) B. LANDON(Chef de Cuisine)& J. FINDLAY(Baker & Confectioner)in adition on the back page all the passengers that were sat at our table during the voyage have signed it,including the our Steward JOHNNY BURKE.
So the question is, have any of you ladies & gentlemen ever sailed with any of the six names I have mentioned.
I am looking forward to what response I will receive.
Best wishes to all,
John Aspin (Ormesby-Middlesbrough)
