Tonnage was originaly compared with displacement as in water displaced by the ship as she sat in the water. Of course salt and fresh give different levels of diplacement. Then they went to tonnage on the cubic capacity of the ship. So a ten thousand ton displacement ship could I think then become a different weight. Bit like going to the old style butcher when he put his thumb on the scale to push up the weight. All they had to do was to make a giant set of scales and that would have fixed it. happy daze john in oz
