Happy Small Business Saturday everyone!

I am enjoying a lazy afternoon after two very full days of family fun. I am starting to go through the "leaked" videos of the candidates. (I hate typing that word) The word "So" as the first word in a sentence has made its way into the vernacular over the past I would say five years. I am not the grammar police, but it drives me crazy. It's not proper grammar! If this is supposed to be a public speaking contest, can we PLEASE get the contestants to stop using the word so at the beginning of a sentence? This is how you use the word so properly at the beginning of a sentence:

There is a hole in my muffler. So, I am taking my car to Midas after work to be fixed.

or

The forecasters are calling for eight to ten inches of snow starting tonight. So, I am stopping at the grocery store to get some basic essentials.

NOT:

So my platform is entitled...…..
So Miss America 2.0 is the best thing ever.
So I am a senior at Ohio State University.
So I was bullied in high school.

These are not exact quotes, but you get the idea. And when anyone says it, they sound like (I think this was a quote from the Golden Girls) they are discussing détente with Henry Kissinger. I don't care how you phrase it, you do not sound intelligent when you start sentences with the word so.

I really do not know why coaches do not pick up on this and encourage the contestants to GET RID OF IT WHEN THEY ARE SPEAKING. I don't care if this is how Mark Zuckerberg speaks. It's not trendy when you are competing for a spokesperson. You have to communicate using proper grammar, and this is not it.

As far as these videos, it seems like they were not supposed to be put out. They are spliced together and look like they still need to edit in the questions. I will get into it more when I am finished, but this is going to be one whiz bang of a "competition". So far, every contestant has basically said the same thing.
