Subject: TALENT PRELIMINARY INITIAL THOUGHTS

Another great night of competition! Overall, the talent was much better this year than in years past. The second half was really good. There were a lot of contestants I scored a 7 and numerous above. Nobody was really "bad" and a lot brought their A game. I could have seen those preliminaries going around 8 or 9 different ways. TN and NC I were completely on board with. PA was a surprise, but I do not disagree with her win. She twirled to Thunderstruck. Yes, THAT Thunderstruck by AC/DC. I sat as I watched thinking that I do not remember seeing Thunderstruck performed at a pageant before. She came out in what looked like a robotic costume, ripped it off, and started twirling. It was absolutely original, and it was entertaining. Based on that, the judges scored it accordingly. Me personally I had some higher than others but there's not one year that I have said the same thing.

I must say the emcee was BAD. I would have rather had the Staniszewski sisters back from last year, and they were bad. I am not a prude, but this host said repeatedly through the night that the stagehands were "sexy." He even made the audience repeat it. I do not think it was appropriate to speak like that at an event with a group of teens were there. It was in poor taste. He ad libbed a lot, talked too much and added too much commentary in the beginning. Also, he seemed drunk. I would not invite him back again. You can be fun and not act like he did. He simply had no class whatsoever and brought the level down. Despite that, the overall production was better than last year. The judges were very qualified. I am a big fan of Billy Gilman and enjoyed his younger years. You could see his face throughout the competition and he really seemed to be enjoying himself. One nice improvement this year is that they had several angles. You do not always see that in preliminaries.

I tried to post who really stood out to me throughout the competition. Am I correct in that they had a lottery for tonight? If so, does anyone not know why it was not followed for last night? Overall, the dancers were good and above average this year. The lyrical dancers were especially good this year. I had AL as my top lyrical dancer, WI the top jazz dancer. There wasn't a bad one in the whole group though. Only a few instrumentalists including KY on fiddle/violin, a few piano players, and VA as a singer/pianist. I said during the competition that I could have seen her winning a preliminary. She sang Get Here, the Oleta Adams song. I hope maybe it becomes available because she just was able to so connect with the audience. If you are a fan of Carole King, you would have loved this performance. She sang right to the audience, and I could really feel her emotion. I have seen a lot of singer/pianists over the years, and this was just really setting the standard. The vocalists had some standout performances. TN, NC, and GA all had powerful, beautiful voices. NC had a few rough notes but she really gave a great performance. The only thing that I think stopped a third vocalist is that you usually do not see three same type of talent in any year at Miss America. The HERStory contestants were all good in their own right. What is noteworthy is that it seemed like after last year with Madison's winning that this year's contestants generally stepped it up more with music, appropriate costuming, and making a more overall picture of the story they were trying to tell. My favorite of them besides Texas was Maine. She had a "total package" performance with an appropriate costume and a robot onstage. Hers was about pursuing a STEAM degree.

So, now we have 9 preliminary winners including: OH, SC, WI, FL, ND, TX, TN, NC, and PA. Not every one of them will make the top 10/11. So, now the fun is picking out who is going to make the top 10. Having seen the competition now, I think that this year's class might not be as strong as last year's. But, there have been a lot of consistency and a lot of standouts. The traditional powerhouse states do not seem to be rising to the occasion this year. I have a feeling we will see some different faces this year in the top 10.

I have a meeting late morning that will last into the afternoon. I have to be alert for it so if I stay up late I will not be in good shape. So, look for talent and fitness posts later on tomorrow. I'll be popping back to answer anyone's questions if they have them or just chat if you like!
