Subject: You bring up an interesting observation which I have been thinking about ever since the crowning. Camille is very vocal about the fact that she does not have talent. However, talent is still counted at 50% of the preliminary score. If talent was to be so important, she is doing the organization no favors. I do agree that she does remind me of a more classic Miss America. And Nia was certainly 1.0 as well. So, maybe in the end, the judges are still going by who they see jump out at them rather than picking the best candidate for a job. I still think Camille won because she was able to speak well and pick up on the talking points of the MAO very well, and that's what they were looking for.

Do I feel that it was best prelim talent, no for various reasons...but then, I was not on the judging panel.

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: And interestingly enough, Nancy Fleming, who was to me one of the quintessential classic Miss Americas-demonstrated her sewing to win Miss America. And I think she won a preliminary talent award as well. I am still of the belief that every person has some kind of talent or skill they have perfected. Miss Idaho from this year is a great example. I wasn't sure how I would have scored it, but she did use her talent of ceramics in her talent presentation. I think it was more about the presentation. I don't think judges would go for that over, let's say, classical opera. But I give her credit for doing that. Also remember that Miss KS 13 wanted to do archery but was not allowed. So she changed to singing, and she really wasn't a talented singer. I think the problem was the perception of the level of skill with Camille's talent.
